>Recoa: char won't give me his dick, I will switch sides
>Quess: amuro win't give me his dick, I will switch sides
>Newtype women: All mentally instable

Reccoa is a foil to Emma's character, somebody who defected from Titans and wanted to seen as a soldier first rather than a woman. Reccoa also did get Char's dick but she wanted emotional connection and care after she literally took a bullet for him.
Quess never switched sides. She spends all of the film criticising the Federation and airing her grievances about her father's work and personal life. She has interest in Amuro due to his newtype background and desires a spiritual connection, partly due to her need for father figure. However, she concludes that he is just like any other adult and is instead drawn to Char's ideology as she connects the concept of lack of Newtype understanding to the cause of fighting within her family. Upon learning of Amuro's solution to just be empty naive platitudes like 'wait around for things to change' and 'collective human wisdom', she comes to Char's aide and gets taken away.
Mirai, Lalah, Mouar, Lila, Shakti are newtypes and quite sane. Haman is evil but not in a unpredictable crazy way. Most of the unstable ones are cyber newtypes which is by design as they get bombarded with traumatic imagery, their memories are cleared and are just exploited for military.

Tomino just doesn't coddle female characters like the rest and allows them to be imperfect humans. Audiences have lower tolerance and narrow minded framework for what they accept in female characters. Look at the crazy shit he puts the male characters through but you don't see anybody say that he hates men.

Tomino was seething against the feminist movement in 1980s Japan. "Career woman" is an archetype embodied the movement, and Tomino barely let any women fit that archetype have peaceful outcome.

I thought the whole Tomino hating women thing was a giant meme and not something people took seriously, like him having a mommy fetish or being Japan's most notorious serial killer.
>>
>>23975292
As jokes become better known outside of the circles that spawned them, someone will eventually take it seriously. Sometimes this will end up self-reinforcing and the original context is almost entirely lost.
>>
>>23975278
Idc, I simply mean to say Tomino had his certain opinions against whatever contemporary social phenomenon happening back then, so he projected that into fictional story. It wasn't even something that intellectually complicated

I think it's about the effect of millitary on family life. Kamille's parents work for Federation (who have forcibly turned his home colony into a millitary base) while he is active in underground press, the typical conservative parents vs liberal kid dynamic. Tomino tends to soapbox in his novels but I don't think we should take Kamille's rant as indicative of his own beliefs. Characters like Emma and later Marbet indicates that he is not entirely against career women or their ability to be mother.
>>
>>23975292
The serial killer bit is real though. And his victims keep rising.
>>
>>23975391
The narrator (Tomino) stated that little Bitchdan "knew", not "thought", as if whatever his opinion about working women is universal truth. Tomino's comment wasn't that uncommon, it's one of typical responses from men during 80s to the new wave of women being economically independent, that women being too independent and working too much aren't feminine, they can't be good wife mother yada yada
>Characters like Emma and later Marbet indicates that he is not entirely against career women or their ability to be mother
I haven't watched Victory, but Tomino also said something in an interview not long after Zera was finished that he viewed Emma the same type of male validation seeking women like Reccoa

For some reason anime directors of the era have a real habit for being pointlessly inflammatory in a way you don't see often from other industries. Maybe it's just that specific clique of director. Always shitting on everything they've made, everything everyone else has made, lamenting how anime is dead (in like fucking 1985) and then delivering some incomprehensible take like LOTR is evil.

I don't know if I can judge his writing because I just haven't read/seen much of his stuff in general including Gundam stuff (watched 0079 recently and probably on the whole don't like it mostly due to plot stuff, even though I love certain individual things about it like the earlier episodes and art direction for example), but having looked at a few of his novels for 0079 I find it interesting how different they feel from how his anime writing's characterized by fans. I know he only wrote one episode of 0079 himself and so it's hard to tell how much influence he had on the others even though I know he did add certain lines to other writers' scripts, but I mean fans are always like
>his writing's completely unlike any other anime writer
>he doesn't tell you how to FEEL, man, it's super subtle and adult
>etc.
when if anything his novels actually seem to spell out exactly how you're meant to feel/take certain things. Like he goes into extreme detail about characters' sexuality and impressions of it, or about his thoughts on what Newtypes are around the time 0079 was a current show, or exactly how Lalah feels about Char and Amuro etc.

I wonder if it's just the inherent difference between writing for a visual medium vs. a text-based medium, but it feels like his 0079 novels spell things out way more than the original show which tended to have more subtlety/ambiguity.

here's deacon's updated TL.

――I've heard there was initially a plan to cut Reccoa from the story. Was that purely a matter of the cast being too large?
TOMINO: That was the sole reason. At that stage, Emma had made the bigger impression on me, and I was probably thinking that one woman between Kamille and Quattro would do the job, that she alone could carry that space. But once it became clear just how deeply Reccoa was involved from the beginning, so cutting her was no longer an option. There was one more reason as well. It seems that among the "Zeta generation," there's a prevailing sense that Reccoa is the single most difficult character to understand. There's a persistent distaste attached to her, this feeling of, "I don't like women who change sides like that." There was even an impression that she served as a second pillar embodying the darker, more depressive qualities of Zeta as a work. At the time, I hadn't yet conceived of the current approach to portraying Kamille, so I went along with that interpretation. But after spending some time working on the structure for Part One, I started turning the question over again, "Why do people hate Reccoa so much?" And it gradually became apparent that the people who felt that way were, at their core, most likely anime otaku. (laughs) On the other hand, I was able to confirm that quite a few film-minded people actually considered Reccoa the more authentic depiction of a woman, that she was the only truly grounded human being in Zeta's entire cast, and that was precisely what made her compelling. So, and I realize this will come across as very harsh toward the fans, I arrived at the conclusion that anime fans who simply pine for the idealized fantasy girl type can't talk to a real woman to save their lives, and that's really all it comes down to. (laughs)

People say that for George Lucas or any other big name in this type of collaborative media too. I think people find it easier to attribute a big success to THIS MAN as opposed recognizing the team effort things like anime take. But you also see some people use THIS MAN as a hatesink too. Tomino at least is usually humble enough to give credit to his team for his successes.
>>
>>23977619
You can't compare Tomino to Lucas though. George Lucas is undoubtedly the major architect of his films in a way Tomino could never truthfully claim about Gundam. In fact Star Wars is a man's passion project homage to pulp sci-fi and Gundam is a company mandated toy commercial that Tomino was assigned to.
>>
>>23977619
While all of these projects are group endeavours it's undeniable that some big names are definitely more involved in the actual creative process than others.
Tomino is clearly not one of those on average, he's too lax on things and likes to give youngsters room to do their own things even if it often ends up in creating some issues for him.

Regardless, a director is still largely responsible for giving the greenlight to other people's decisions so in a way he has a greater degree of responsibility compared to the rest of the staff, even if some abuse this position to claim undeserved success.
>>
>>23977977
This is always a tricky one to nail down. Auteur theory essentially began as a white lie to make discussion of film work in the same fashion as other mediums but it's not entirely wrong either. A creative lead on a project may not be doing everything but they often get the most say in assembling the people to do things and shaping their output.
A film director doesn't operate the camera, dress the set, work out precise blocking, implement lighting or perform the colour grade but all the same it's common for the one director working with multiple people in all those jobs to retain a similar aesthetic between projects.
It doesn't mean they did it on their own, but it's also fair to at some point start referring to it as the director's visual style.
>>
>>23975203
>Haman is evil but not in a unpredictable crazy way.
I still don't really see what her "plan" was, what conquering the Earth Sphere was all in service of for her. She says a whole lot of nothing in ZZ when pushed to give some sort of justification for WHY she's doing it all.
All we get is in Zeta she says "people will be able to understand the return of the Zabis easily", which is not an actual reason to take over, and in ZZ she says "at least I'm better than Glemy" which is also not an actual reason
It is at least implied that it's partially a desire to sweep away the corrupt Federation, but that still doesn't provide any vision of what exactly will come next
She comes off as very evasive and almost shy because of how she avoids talking about what her endgame is. It almost seems like she's gone to war primarily because everyone in Axis fucking hates the Earth Federation and it's the only way she can unify them behind her (and even that doesn't work since Glemy has a large, well-armed rebellion)

As a director, his specific thing seems to be translating that into non-verbal cues. There are a remarkable lot of those in his cartoons.

>>23976461

I mean, as I said it really depends on the person.
Welles for instance did not physically operate the camera but he was still the one who decided angles and camera placement, being a former theatre actor he also often starred in his own movies, on the other hand somebody like Kubrick did operate the camera in some of his movies, both Welles and Kubrick (obsessively) edited their own movies but somebody like Spielberg didn't and entrusted the editing work to his staff, the degree of involvement in the creative process is not universal and some movie directors are incredibly more hands-on than others for better or worse.
Of course, again, whether a director is personally responsible for some part of the work or not doesn't change the fact that he's ultimately the one who approves almost everything regarding production, so he's still largely responsible for whatever ends up in the records, which is also why we have some terms like "Director's Cut" to denote the degree of involvement the director has in the creation.

Like most people Tomino's involvement varies depending on whatever work we're talking about, he wasn't very hands on in something like ZZ but he was much more involved into other stuff like 0079, we know this from a lot of interviews with both members of his staff and himself, Tomino is also one of those people who loves writing his own song lyrics for his anime, something you can't say for many other anime directors so again, you gotta look at each individual case rather than making blanket statements because the profession doesn't inherently limit agency, it's all up to individual creators and their own skills and decisions, somebody like Umetsu for instance is much more involved in the actual animation process than other directors down to actually doing the character designs himself while most other directors leave all of that to staff members, everyone is different and some directors can definitely be more involved than others.

Zeta's only big flaw is that it never properly lays out the big picture political aims of all its players.
0079 TV has dogshit presentation to the point of actually harming the story being told (I do not just mean the animation budget, I mean shot composition, music, the works) and 0079 movies cut a few important things even if they do a good job overall
>but Zeta isn't about the big picture political stuff
You have 50 episodes, you can dedicate one episode's worth of screentime and scriptwriting across the whole thing to tell us clearly what AEUG, the Titans, and Axis all actually want in a big picture sense without losing focus from the personal stories. I can think of a fair few subplots I would sacrifice to have that instead.

>they militarised after the 30 Bunch incident (very quickly, it would seem)
>they are supported by Anaheim, though not unreservedly
>Quattro says that humans should move into space, but it's unclear how widespread this view is in AEUG
>their political leaning stops really mattering by the end of the show because so many of them die
None of this really tells us why anyone would join up or what they stand for besides being "anti-Titan". They don't have a list of things that the EF needs to change. They don't have a plan for who should govern the colonies.

I start to doubt this guy's translation. One time I viewed original text of an interview he translated, Tomino used a rather simple, straightforward vocabulary, but the translation just made it autistically more abstract and awkward to understand than the original

>Reccoa
Tomino has the distinction of making it so that all men and women who act emotionally get the back of the hand
>Quess
She was already a fuckin eco hippy traffic sitter at the start of the movie so her being foreshadowed as easy to radicalize was obvious and logical

this exactly. most of the gundam fans i know are literally women and like how he handles women.

He understands women; if their primary source of attraction sees through their feminine wiles like the duplicitous hussies they are, they'll switch their allegiance to a rival romantic interest in a vain effort to arouse sexual jealousy and betrayal in their original suitor, a tale as old as time.

Tomino has never been very good at writing war drama. He's great at regular drama during a war though. See how he always has to include a bunch of women in all roles because otherwise he can't have them being crazy and the guys being really horny about them all the time. Tomino would go mad writing a male only cast.

i had this argument the other day and basically it boiled down to what you said - tomino doesn't write "bad" women, in the sense that they're inherently written from this evil place of misogyny, or over sexualized, or whatever other wrongthink people think is the matter with his women, the thing that people are really objecting to is that tomino OCCASIONALLY writes very unflattering non-progressive portrayals of women, and that just really shocks people who are used to portrayals of women in an politely tolerant gynocentric society's media.

i always like to bring up beltorchika in these kinds of discussions, because she made me have an epiphany about how tomino writes women. if you examine her interactions with characters besides amuro and kamille there's a lot of interesting stuff there. mirai, by then a grown woman with a family of her own, sees what she's doing with amuro and basically says "what the hell do you think you're doing?" her dumb whore behavior of "rousing her man for battle" or whatever up till that point exists to get called out by mirai.

understanding that made me appreciate how many of his "problematic" women really have easily understood lessons about relationships between men and women, if you bother to use your brain for half a second and not just ragepost about how tomino only writes crazy whores and sluts because he's an evil old man who hates women.

I cant imagine this shit happening in anything else. But it makes sense in context and wasnt misogynistic. She betrayed them all in a fit of jealousy and tried to kill Elchie and they were all basically living in Mad Max times. Also Tron kicked his ass earlier lol. There's just so make good female character he's made you have to be seeing everything through a modern lens to see otherwise. I liked the doctor girl who ended up fighting too and Greta.

Zeonic's translation gives the impression Tomino is a sophisticated guy with language, when in interview itself he was talking about something like his penile dysfunction lmao
>>
>>24005277
The part that causes some confusion on people is that characters often bring up new concepts without exposition (since they already know about them in-universe but the viewer doesn't) and it's not framed as a reveal or mystery to the viewer either.

But even outside of that, Tomino's dialogue just has an unique cadence and style that you don't see in anything else. I've seen Japanese fans fearing Tomino isn't popular in the West because the uniqueness of his dialogue style is lost in translation... although that clearly isn't the case.
>>
>>24004745
tomino's dialogue is very naturalistic and the people that complain about it are used to characters in fiction (including western fiction) being exposition mouthpiece robots

reccoa is a rape victim who reacts poorly because of trauma that she never addressed. it's lost in translation, but there's a reddit post about it here.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Gundam/comments/2ml8r2/comment/cm5xwyh/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

to be clear: Reccoa is also a victim of Scirocco's powers, the way Sarah is. he's particularly influential; remember that Char warns Kamille that Four can "control your mind" at Killimanjaro. Scirocco shows off these powers shortly before he dies, with his psychic attack on poor Kamille.

it isn't the case that Tomino hates women; if anything, Gundam is a series that shows what war does TO women.
>>
>>24004015
this is a good post. on top of the post i already made about Reccoa being a rape victim, things like this are important to consider. Tomino's women aren't "bad", and he doesn't "hate women", at all.

>>24005405
Tomino is a very vulgar man lol, he always talks about things like this. i won't ever forget when he said that he was seriously thinking about Nanai's vagina while writing her because "she feels fleshy this way", as if to say "if i don't think about how much sex she has, she won't feel like a real woman". in the end, he also said that if Nanai is the kind of woman who has a lot of sex, Char will look pathetic next to her, so there's definitely something going on in his brain, lol.

Char will look pathetic next to any woman, but that's just Char.
>>
>>24007858
it's also completely realistic foid behavior. you're just mad because women are a protected caste in the west
>>
>>24007886
>>24007883
Reccoa being a rape victim seems to be a stretch. Any further proof of this? Tomino laid out why reccoa is the way she is in an interview. Basically similar to Emma but both made difference choices in their life. Mostly due to being “unfulfilled” by men or some thing along those lines. Most likely a weird translation though as Zeonic sucks
>>
>>24009897
Reccoa used Japanese verb in episode she died with the implicit meaning in Showa era or something that she was raped

If you don't trust Zeonic then you can look at original text for yourself

I don't think those two statements are contradictory. In one he's claiming that both of them had a discussion over what they think they role of a woman should be, on the other statement he says that men who don't like Reccoa are otaku (a pejorative in Japan) who wanted her to be a caricature of a woman, the type that goes "ara ara~" and swoons over the MC to validate the viewer's feelings.
>>
>>23978444
Don't forget that Kamille himself starts with outright disdain for Earth and the Federation, he mellows out slightly during his stay on Earth, but by the end he wholefully shares Char's vision that humans should all leave Earth.

Then during ZZ the AEUG is depicted more like a guerrilla funded by Anaheim than a legitimate military faction with an ideology.

When I first watched it I got confused and thought the AEUG was a faction that sympathized with Zeon and merely hated the Federation, which made it a bit confusing as to why Amuro and Bright were so quick to switch sides.

It's because Reccoa was raped, or otherwise suffered sexual violence from male soldiers. It's a part of her dying words that were lost in translation.

We don't know when it happened, most likely during OYW when she was fighting against Zeon, possibly repeatedly.

In Japanese there is the word "disgrace/shame/humiliation" as a common euphemism in Japanese for rape. It's the kind of word you will use to make a sex reference that kids won't understand but adults will. It's not 1985 urban slang or anything, the definition of shame as rape is actually listed in dictionaries today:

辱め【はずかしめ】(n) shame, disgrace, being raped

Reccoa uses that euphemism in her dying words, at 18:04 after the end of the opening of episode 49:「エマ中尉わかってよ。男達は戦いばかりで女を道具に使うしか思いつかない…もしくは、女を辱めることしか知らないのよ…!」

"Lt. Emma, understand me. Men are so involved in their fighting, they think of women as mere tools. Sometimes even... not knowing anything other than to disgrace them!"

Emma is taken aback by what Reccoa just said, and she replies「辱められたって…レコア・ロンド…」: "You were... disgraced...? Reccoa Londe...". Her reaction is serious enough that we know the "humiliation" being talked about is not about typical high school bullying.

Nothing else could explain Reccoa's constant search for reliable male figures, and the deep feeling of betrayal she got from Quattro simply ignoring/rejecting her. Unfortunately the English word humiliated does not have all the facets implied by the hazukashime Reccoa uses. It would be weird to have Reccoa suddenly confide to Emma using the very rash word rape out of the blue, especially when sexual issues are not mentioned anywhere else in the series. So the word humiliated stayed in English, with all the things it implies, and also all the things it doesn't imply.
