It was carried hard by the anime which improved on it a lot when the manga had trash writing and a half-assed non-ending because the mangaka is a bad writer who had no idea what to do and just threw it all out of the window

It's telling that the guy has never made anything worthy of note since (or before, actually)

The show was just lucky to get the combination of Gainax and Shaft on it.
