What are your thoughts on the story, characters and mecha designs of The Big O? You have not lost your Memory of it, have you?
s'aight
It is good.
Mechs are ok, the episodic plots are good, the overarching plot is shite.
>>23986070There should have been a fifth unit that was designed to protect the simulation itself, like an administrator. Would have been a great opportunity to have a Space-themed Big
Cool show. Kinda dumb 2nd season, just kinda. Never fully explained why they lived in the simulation like Ergo Proxy did.Crazy Turner had so much pull they can get Sunrise and Production IG to make shows.
I wish the ending wasn't literally "uh...it's all a metaphor i guess". I like it a lot, I still hunger for more. I suspect had it kept going there would have been some pretty wild power-creep with how Big-O seemed to simply manifest mecha-magic powers over time. But the world that had been set up was good, one of the few vague-lore settings where it works because its focus is more on themes, sub-plots and cool retro-styled robots with a bit of silliness here and there. The entire soundtrack is S-tier and the opening of the second season picking up right at the end of the first was great. It's also the main reason why the Ignition video still fuckin slaps.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kziSDTpAaOA
>>23986070I'm glad we're finally getting new merch. I still want a season 3.
>>23986070WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP
>>23986152>crazy turner had so much pullIt was literally just them throwing money at sunrise to make another season since the anime gained so much traction in america. Banrise wanted the series to be a hit so it was a no brainer and jason demarco from adult swim was a huge otaku of the worst kind who liked the show. I also read through some older materials a while back from the home releases and apparently sunrise flip flopped back and forth on how many episodes they wanted but ended up settling on 13. Katayama I think was the only one who wanted it to be and endless series because I can't find any interviews of konaka and the other staff saying the same.
>>23986070Schwarzwald is one of my favorite anime characters of all time. I really want a good Big Duo figure that isn't a kit because I'm a babby when it comes to plamo. A figure of Schwarzwald would be great too.
>>23986321Moderoid is finally giving us a big duo kit, if we're lucky we'll probably get a schwarzwald 3rd party resin kit down the line.
>>23986326I specifically stated I didn't want a kit...
>>23986347There's not many other options unless you want to buy the old bandai anime collection figures which a probably going to go for a premium and are like 20+ years old anyway. The moderoid kits aren't even that hard to assemble and you can literally just snap them together.
>>23986184>It was literally just them throwing money at sunrise to make another season since the anime gained so much traction in america.yeah Big O was sorta weird in how USA went nuts for it, execs noticed, then sorta just shat the bed for Tim And Eric or whatever crapI remember being at Megacon for the debut of the dub, and holy shit a comic book con that was rapidly falling to the weeb invasion, and you drop BTAS But It's Also Bebop they could have just put a tip jar outside of the room and funded five seasons
>>23986378Whoever took over CN fucked up massively and it has never recovered. Obvious nepotism for a bunch of no-talent relations who wanted to be "creatives" instead of get a real job
>>23986387I'm looking forward to that Robot Chicken special as a series finale for [as]Smiling Friends was really nice to see one more time what things used to be, but it's yeah done.
>>23986378It was only funded for an additional season, nothing else was planned beyond that. Big O aired at a weird time were cartoon network was testing the waters with what was going to stick and what wasn't for the toonami and adult swim blocs. DBZ had just started to take off and by the time season 2 of big o finally aired in 03 everyone was going crazy for battle shonen which killed any hype around season 2 reducing it to only having a niche audience.
>>23986397yeah I was at... what's the big Atlanta con, Dragoncon? but yeah I hustled a free ride through it the year S2 got cancelled and somebody had flyers that were all YOU ARE A TOMATO trying to get a season 3 off the ground
>>23986409I still hold out hope for a season 3.
>>23986378I've heard a few times that multiple AS major players were very resentful that anime kept blowing their original projects out of the water, and there were very few that they actually liked. FLCL and Big O being the most notable, which is why there was all those weird bad FLCL rebootquels later that kept getting funded beyond any reasonable measure.Kind of a classic problem that western suits and studios were genuinely confused that kids wanted to watch two cool guys try to kill each other and not another cartoon about a guy with a silly voice not moving much.
When I ejaculate, I have The Big O!
>>23986070Anyone got a gif of that moment?
>>23986167Cute, too bad it's a garage kit
Why doesn't the military or the police have any Megadeus mechs? They're completely useless and have to rely on Roger every time. Why is it that only the bad guy of the week has a Megadeus?
>>23986825>Why doesn't the military or the police have batmobile?
>>23986830But every other bad guy has one too. Surely they could have built at least a couple?
>>23986440I believe it. The big players who did the live comedies were probably nepotism acts.
>>23986825Because they're just extras in Roger's story
>>23987079Do you believe Roger was the 2nd in command of the organization that created the simulation? Rosewater was simply the creator's son? Why is everything set up to support Roger? So much to think about in the show.
>>23987129Roger is just an actor.
>>23986070It took me 20 years to realize that Big Duo's face is half black/half white. I always thought it was just stylish shadowing. Like O and Fau have half their faces shadowed in that very pic!
>>23986825It's MOTW, that's how it's supposed to be. MC has a super powerful robot that no one else has access to and uses it to save the day.
>>23986825The Megadeuses (Megadeii?) are extremely rare and mysterious in the setting, that's why the military police doesn't have even one.
>>23987191Same here. I realized that about five years ago after I saw one of the figures of Big Duo and wondered if the designers made a mistake. The black on Big Duo's face is so dark as to resemble heavy shadows, but when I went back to check, the "shading pattern" was always consistent.
It's been a long time since I've seen it, but it was definitely one of my favorites back in the day. I'm at the point where I'm not really watching anything new anymore, so maybe I'll give it a rewatch soon.
>>23986321
I feel like I'm in the minority but I loved the plot stuff in season 2 a lot. I love weird "Twin Peaks" stuff in general. (I don't know what to call it.) It was still ambiguous enough to be really compelling. The only problem was the downgrade in animation/style quality from hand drawn to digital.
>>23986825They're supposed to be like the military in a kaiju movie plus Gordon/cops in Batman and ineffectual against the real villain. Maybe it would have fit if they had real robot like mecha that always got their asses kicked.
>>23987191>>23987226I only just realized it this thread when someone posted the plamo lol.
>>23986596There's also another one based off the ED and I think there's one for big o being released soon.
>>23987343They got Roger's hair wrong, it doesn't even look like him. I assume this is also a garage kit?
>>23987353Yeah resin kit or whatever.
>>23987225Burritos cause me a Megaduce
https://twitter.com/discotekmedia/status/2086898327166292064
The DVD is better than the blu-ray
>>23989444Essplain plux
>>23989449Because it has the original theme song and it's a 4:3 show so the dvd fits perfectly on a old tv screen without any downscaling.
>>23989404Is this a rerelease or a remaster or what? I own Big O on Blu-Ray and I got it years ago
>>23989466Then you own the Sentai Filmworks release. This is Discotek.
>>23986326I'm dumping my entire bank account into getting this thing when it drops. I've waited an eternity for a Big Duo to get my hands on, and finally that time is upon me.>>23986347lol git gud I guess.
>>23989464Holy shit that helps a ton. Now I know which one to buy.
>>23989404>still doesn't have the original theme songWhat the fuck is up with that?
>>23989526Music copyrights are always way more complicated than any other kind
>>23989526You try selling something with a blatant ripoff of a Queen song in it. Not easy.
>>23986070Solid 7/10 show I wouldn't mind re-watching since it's already been a decade.
>>23989504Just be aware the DVD is out of print and the Anime legends "Complete Collection" English DVD is only season 1. You need to get "The Big O II - Complete Collection" It's the same thing with their Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex DVD (yes I know there's a decent blu-ray but it has sub issues and I wanted the DVD) and it was really annoying.
>>23989573There was also that opening that was a blatant ripoff of Gerry Anderson's UFO.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2PoXfZdYVUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnaQZgZaOkg
Didn't read the thread just wanted to drop in and say S2 is non canon and doesn't matter and no I will never watch it and I will never watch FLCL Progressive nor Alternative.
>>23990982Thanks for the repost from /a/ bro
>>23990396Retard.
>>23990993At least /m/ is not as chock full of tasteless fags as /a/ is. >but I liked the /co/ episodes of the show it was good die
>>23987296What is this and why is he red
>>23991000That's how he looked in the concept art.
>>23990982Well according to konaka he wasn't happy with the ending he wrote and would happily retcon it if the show were ever to get another season.
>>23990996Nah I'd say proportionally it's the same
>>23991000Because he's a Big tomatO
>>23991008I loved season 2 but I think it would be hilarious and fitting if they just completely ignored it and went along with their plans to make it like a western serialized show again. To bad it didnt get popular enough for that to happen. I feel almost the same way for Twin Peaks. I wish they never had to reveal Laura's killer but I love how weird it got. Big O Season 3 The Return being full Twin Peaks the Return would he equally enjoyable to me.
>>23991214Big AgreeIf they have a S3 I want it to go full schizo
>>23991219>>23991214>"Cast in the name of God, ye forgiven"
>>23991000I think it's a custom of the old Bandai kit.
CASS IN DA NAY MUH GAHYE NAH TA GILL CHEEWE HAB CAME TO TEEMBEEG AAAUOH
>>239860702nd season is a drastic downgrade compared to the previous season due to being produced by CN and Toonami, and having vital plot points crammed into what was originally intended to be revealed over 3 seasons
>CN loved Big O so much that they pushed for a second season to get made even though Japan doesn't give a shit about the series and the staff just wanted to wash their hands of it>second season is significantly worse in every wayThere's a reason this only happened once.
>>23993889>Japan doesn't give a shit about the series and the staff just wanted to wash their hands of itRetard.
>>23991000Big Red.
sequel when though or anything
>>23993922Never. It's been too long and CN/Toonami is not what it was in 1999.
https://x.com/yamaki_nyx/status/2091100879005089902
A rerelease of the manga would be nice at least?
>>23993922With how shit revivals are these days I'd we're pretty much dodging a bullet. I know konaka and some of the other staff want to come back to the series for another season but with how sunrise these days handles their projects I doubt it would be any better than the first two seasons. Plus I don't see them unfucking that ending in any conceivable way possible without it turning into a narrative mess.
>>23993972It got a digital release not too long ago but it's not translated.
I love Dorothy
>>23993980Not to mention we'd potentially get 3DCG Bigs, and even as someone that's more accepting of things like that than most, I don't think that's something I'd like to see.
>>23993988As much as /m/ likes to deny it modern day sunrise is no longer capable of making good animation anymore. Even if they tried to stick to traditional 2D there's still going to be CG spliced in where they need to cut corners which always looks really jarring.
>>23993988There was already a significant dip in animation quality between seasons because they switched to digital. Anything made nowadays would be guaranteed to be atrocious.
>>23993987Many are saying this.
>>23986070I loved most of it, but the season finales are both shit. Journey before Destination and all that. Dorothy was a huge waifu of mine for a while. Big O is definitely on my top 10 mecha (or whatever designation you wanna give it). I yearn for those piston fucking punches in other shows at some point.
>>23993904He's kiiiinda right but not really. It did underperform in Japan during its first airing because it was exclusive to a premium channel that had just launched at the time, so barely anyone was able to watch it or even knew it existed. But it's be rebroadcast a few times since then and has done well every time.
>>23994969I would argue that we wouldn't have gotten Moderoid Big O a couple years back if there wasn't at least some demand for merch in Japan. It's definitely still more popular in the West, but saying Japan "doesn't give a shit" is a bit far.
>>23994985Breh, Goodsmile pulls lots of fairly unknown out of the woodwork pretty often. Surprised they haven't done Laserion and stuff like Balatak.
>>23987191
>>23995271Japs sure love to use therefore math symbols (∴)
>>23995274Newfag.
>>23994985It got a (great) manga serialization, Japan does give a shit.
>>23995274Those are speed holes. They make the art deco mech go faster.
>>23995280I mean it just got in SRWY dlc
>>23991219Also just had a thought that would probabaly just make everyone mad. Season 3 could be like the Dark City (1998) Since everyone was implied to be actors have everyone appear in totally different roles. Now Dorothy is the Pilot of Big O and Beck is her Butler or some shit. And they all start to unravel more mysteries (except not really)and their original roles. Dark City is heavily noir inspired and takes place in an isolated city too and scifi. Or go with the Moebius influence and have them explore the ruined world outside the city. or none of this just make more of what made season 1 good I dont care I just love big o
>>23995566You mean the half assed dlc that only gave us season 1 attacks?
>>23995023Yeah, but only for the Moderoid lineBig O has been in a lot more than just the Moderoid line.
>>23995625>still no word on big duo and final stage
>>23995625Good luck getting any of those for under $100.
>>23995634I wish we could get a re-release of the max gokin soft vinyls. I got the big o years ago which even back then cost a fortune. I keep seeing listings occasionally for big duo and fau but they're absurdly priced and shipping will rape you.
>>23995588I'm a ass half full guy
>>23995588What attacks did season 2 add? Just the arm gatling and Final Stage right?
>>23996685Plasma gimmick, moby dick anchor and one or two variations of sudden impact seen in season 2.
>>23995642Bro plz no CM's there is a raisinette they are kapootskis.
>>23996727I swear the hip chains were in season 1, too.
>>23996808There's an attack where he spams all the moby dick anchors that's from the fight at the beginning of season 2.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUVo4g2RAJw
I haven't watched it since it was on toonami late at night but I've been watching a ton of 90s and 00s anime lately so it's on my list to revisit.
>>23995627Lots of stuff they announced for moderoid takes forever to come out. I think a lot of it is vaporware. Last year they said they would come out with Dancouga Nova during last year. It's now more than halfway into the next year and they haven't even announced anything yet.
>>23986321Men who do nothing but dream should just stay in their dreams forever.
>>23996836>tomatoes
>>23999695>and potatoes
>>23991214Yeah, I'd love that, often thought that would work. They could pass Season 2 off as a mysterious bad dream.>Season 3 starts>rapid montage of key scenes from Season 2, accompanied by Dorothy's signature frantic piano playing>montage intercut with brief shots of Roger uncomfortably stirring in bed>montage briefly continues, suddenly ending with Roger, now out of bed, interrupting Dorothy's playing>"DOROTHY!">"Were you dreaming again?">"(grumbles)...as it happens, yes. I was.">"What did it mean?">"... no idea. (laughs) So, since when did androids start believing in the meaning of dreams?">" ... Rude, Roger Smith" (loud, erratic jazzy piano playing recommences)>"DOROTHY!!!"
