What happened to colonies? How many were actually destroyed? >Side 1 (Zahn): Located at Lagrange point L5; served as an early administrative hub for the Earth Federation.Side 2 >(Hatte): Located at L4; famously site of the British Drop operation during the One Year War.>Side 3 (Munzo): Located at L2; became the home territory of the Principality of Zeon.>Side 4 (Moore): Located at L5; heavily contested and later merged or reorganized during wartime.>Side 5 (Loum): Located in a halo orbit near L1/L4; site of the devastating Battle of Loum.>Side 6 (Riah): Located at L4; remained neutral during the initial conflicts of the One Year War.>Side 7 (Noa): A newer, late-addition colony cluster where Amuro Ray and the RX-78-2 Gundam originated
>>23997017I don’t think Gundam does a great job in showing how devastating the war was. Depending on the source, Sides 1, 2, 4 & 5 were pretty much destroyed. I don’t like how Origin depicted the initial conflict. I like the idea of Zeon using Zaku II-Cs shooting nukes and gassing colonies. With the battle of Loum being a cataclysmic battle where the colonies were destroyed in the crossfire, and the federation losing, but Zeon taking heavy casualties.
>>23997061Goddamn it, will you retards stop spouting this drivel?!!!! N-U-K-E-S were NOT used in the OYW. Where does it state this?!
>>23997597Dude calm down. The Zaku II-C has special armor for radiation that was removed after the Antarctic Treaty (F model). The Salamis and Magellan armament was listed as having nuclear weapons.I can’t find it but there was multiple game animations depicting Zakus firing Nukes at colonies and on the 08th MS Team dvd, there was an extra that went into UC history, and it specifies states Side 1’s colonies were blown up with nukes. I’m not gonna spoonfeed you everything but it’s been stated in lots of supplemental material. Yes, some of it contradicts other material, but you get the idea Nukes and Chemical weapons were used.
I always thought that most of the sides were either fairly split or leaning towards Zeon or the Feddies. Imagine cylinders either tearing themselves apart or attacking other cylinders with whatever forces they had.
>>23997597Gundam Century, More About the Universal Century, Gihren's Greed, take your pick. I mean hell, even in actual animation your statement here isn't true, nuclear weapons were used at Odessa in the 0079 movies as well as in 08th MS Team.
>>23997041None of the colonies we see on the first series ook like they could even have one million people living in them
>>23997597>N-U-K-E-S were NOT used in the OYW. Where does it state this?!Both sides fired nukes at eachother. Zakus had nuclear launchers and Salamis had nuclear launch missile tubes. Lots of colonies were destroyed in the crossfire
>>23997692The spacenoids were sympathetic to Zeon's idea of spacenoid freedom. But the Federation had fleets and bases at each of the Colony Sides. So any protests or demonstrations about spacenoid freedom were quickly shut down.Zeon Side 3 was also annoyed at meek the other Side governments were. They talked about Spacenoid freedom but didn't actually do anything about it.
>>23997692It’s kind of touched on, a lot of the colonist don’t like the Federation and are sympathetic to Zeon, however, the federation had the numbers, they had military bases on the colonies, and could easily quell any uprisings. The federation controlled the colonies, extracted taxes, resources and the colonist had minimal if any representation. I do think a lot of that was dispelled when Zeon killed so many Spacenoids.
>>23997597Antarctic Treaty pretty much implies that they were.
>>23997017I would like an OVA (not origin) to go over prewar, the start and end during the earth drop operations.
>>23997017I hate these secondaries so goddamn much.>Side 1 (Zahn)>Side 2 (Hatte)>Side 4 (Mua)>Side 5 (Loum)GONE. We are shown this on episode 1.
>>23997597>Goddamn it, will you retards stop spouting this drivel?!>Where does it state this?!Here:https://web.archive.org/web/20040219130720/http://www.gundamofficial.com/worlds/uc/background/timeline.html#msg>During this first week of the war, the indiscriminate use of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons claims the lives of 2.8 billion space colonists.Variations of that line appear in every Gundam databook published to date (with total casualty numbers varying). It doesn't say if WMDs were deployed by both sides or only by Zeon, but the use of nuclear weapons is a direct reason as to why they were prohibited in the Antarctic Treaty, and why M'Quve's plan to use one in Odessa was a taboo even for Zeon.
>>23997061It just seems by 0083 everything is back to normal. Half the population was killed, yet it’s not really mentioned about the drastic population depletion.
>>23999227Problem was overpopulation so it was a blessing in 'disguise' as Federation had less mouths to feed, same justification they use for Dublin.
>>23999183Yes WMDs, as in Chemical weapons. Nothing in any OFFICAL animated works shows a nuke. Everything is non canon. You see gas (8th Mobile SHIT team) and Musai Cruisers in 0079 firing beams destroying colonies.
>>23999821>Nothing in any OFFICAL animated works shows a nuke. And what is this?>8th Mobile SHIT teamYou are not as cool as you believe you are.
>>23997041It's funny how these numbers just flat out need to be retconned. For them to be true literally all that's left is Zeon and Riah. Where the fuck is all the action outside of Green Oasis taking place in Zeta? Where's Shangri-La?
>>23999227The real problem is after MSG there just aren't locations for Zeta and ZZ to take place in.
>>23999901I think there would be plenty of locations, it's just if the series actually focused on all the destruction caused by the OYW you'd see a lot more mourning of recent deaths caused by Zeon and maybe even the civilian population protesting to completely wipe them out. But Tomino wanted the plot to focus more on the Federation's corruption and unfair treatment of the spacenoids so all the destruction gets sidelines for a quick "return to status quo" so the plot can actually focus on that.
>>23999896>For them to be true literally all that's left is Zeon and Riah.Precisely. That's all that was left. See >>23999159>Where the fuck is all the action outside of Green Oasis taking place in Zeta?Green Oasis is in Side 7, which was only completed after the OYW.>Where's Shangri-La?Lagrange 5 (Side 1), and it's an overpopulated shithole full of refugees and war detritus spilling over to the windows.
>>23999909Outside of Green Oasis. As in the places that aren't Green Oasis. And Side 1 got destroyed. So where was Shangri-La?
>>23999908>>23999901>The real problem is after MSG there just aren't locations for Zeta and ZZ to take place in.It's handwaved away as "well, the Federation just rebuilt everything very quickly after the OYW, so you still have a bunch of Sides in space".The conclusion here is that, when 0079 was originally written, they didn't consider the sheer extent of the destruction in >>23999159, nor that it was going to be closely scrutinized by people like the Gundam Century editors. And they especially did not consider that they were going to make any sequels to the story. See, that's a good idea for a story: a post-OYW story that takes the brutal depopulation of the One Week Battle front and center, and isn't the Zeta/CCA cycleBy the way, retcons of that scale are a common occurrence in science fiction, to the point there's even a name for them:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fix-up>>23999896>It's funny how these numbers just flat out need to be retconned. And they have been retconned, several times over. For instance, Hatte is the only Side to be completely wiped out by Zeon in The Origin (Loum is only caught in the crossfire, but a lot of habitats are still around, including its capital).
>>23997061>With the battle of Loum being a cataclysmic battle where the colonies were destroyed in the crossfire, and the federation losing, but Zeon taking heavy casualties. This doesn't make any sense. How can Zeon take heavy losses when every depiction of the Battle of Loum shows Zakus easily avoiding every attack and destroying hordes Federation ships.
>>24000176The goal of Loum was never to clear the road for an occupation/attrition war, but to obliterate the Federation as a fighting force. And even if the outcome wasn't a total defeat for Zeon, they failed at their strategic objective while losing too many experienced pilots and hardware in the process.>In this battle, the Earth Federation Fleet suffered a devastating blow, and the Principality of Zeon declared victory in the fleet battle. However, the Principality Forces also suffered heavy losses to their core MS units, making the colony drop operation impossible; consequently, the second colony drop ended in failure.>With both sides having exhausted their military strength, they turned to the negotiating table to reach a ceasefire agreement. This is called "culmination" in military theory. At that point, Zeon doesn't have the resources to proceed with their strategy as it was originally formulated, so they're obligated to change gears: a land campaign to occupy poorly-defended targets and force the Federation to defend their home turf. In the meantime, the Federation still had its strongholds in Jaburo, Luna II and Von Braun. You need to understand Loum from a Japanese perspective. After Tsushima, Yamamoto and the IJN became obsessed with the idea of having one big "decisive battle" against the US during WWII. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kantai_KessenArguably, this was Midway, and it backfired on Japan, which didn't lose right away, but was forced into the backfoot from that point on.
>>24000208Okay.But every anime depiction of Loum shows the Federation getting their asses kicked. Not a single Zaku gets hit. Wow where are these Zeon "losses" coming from? If they had shown some Zakus getting shot down, then I would not be asking this.
>>24000251The two depictions of Loum in animation (Igloo and The Origin) try to split the difference by dividing the battle in two sections: a standard fleet battle followed by MS taking the Federation by surprise, with the bulk of the losses being among the Musai, rather than the MS force. The real reason that there's an obvious discrepancy between Loum as described in side material and the animated depictions is marketing. In their infinite wisdom, Bandai is convinced that ships in Gundam are nothing but worthless cannon fodder to be destroyed by MS, who get all the cool merch. Even if nu-Yamato gets a lot of ship kits, they won't release a modern Salamis or Magellan, for reasons. As a matter of fact, someone on JP Twitter pointed out that the battle of orbit from SEED is one of the very few instances, in the whole franchise, of a non-protagonist ship explicitly depicted taking out an MS. Yes, this is the degree of bullshit we're dealing with.
>>24000251Watch MS Igloo. The Feds blow up a bunch of Musais and other Zeon ships in the first few seconds. Those don't grow on trees and neither do MS maintainers, reactor engineers, etc. A shitload of MS but no carriers or experienced maintainers/engineers is a big problem. Also we never see the END of Loum, where both sides just start expending their nuclear stockpiles like they're going out of style and take insane casualties. In Gundam nukes have insane blast radius in space (0083 lol) even though IRL it's not that bad; lots of ships and MS were likely vaporized offscreen.
>>24000401>losses being among the Musai, rather than the MS force. Aren't Musai about equal to Salamis? Why would they lose?
>>24000418Anon are you pretending to be retarded now or what?
>>24000418I don't understand the question.>Why would they lose? And why do you sound like bikinischizo?
>>24000421>>24000424A Musai is equal to a Salamis.A Gwazine is equal to a Magellan. So why would Zeon suffer heavy losses in ship combat? It should be an equal exchange.
