Rest in peace Peter Cullen, you made our childhoods.
>>23997956Welker's just as old but holding up much better than Cullen and his voice somehow hasn't aged a day since the 70s.
>>23998704>Yet they will still be screwed when it comes to the animal noises! They've basically got so much stock audio of his various grunts they're set
I can't think of any other voice actor who's performance actually improved with age. Listen to him in the Cybertron games and the sense of authority and wisdom aand weariness is palpable. It feels like a wild west sheriff combined with King Arthur. I don't think we'll ever again hear the like of it.
>>24002009It's because the character itself changed drastically as the franchise gradually got more serious. In G1, for all his talk about not just being a standard hero that's kind of what Optimus was. He was older and more softspoken and polite than average but at the end of the day he was there to save the day and hopefully one day end the war. In later continuities, or at least the ones where Prime is played by Cullen there's no real saving the day Cybertron is already lost and Prime just has to kind of deal with that.
WHY ARE PEOPLE DIE?
>>23997396Autobots, Transform and Roll Out
His final performance will be a 12 minute animated short that will play after the rerelease of the 1986 movie
>>24002009Midorikawa sounds a lot more terrifying now. Also Kazuki Yao sounds way more grizzled and believable as awar veteran now.But I'll give you that Cullen was beautiful as he got older. Awe inspiring when he got good writing he sold it hard.
>>24002943He really loved Devastation and I think that stems from combining the best of bothPrime sounds old and serious but also full of life who's ready to smack talk when throwing hands
>>23997396TIL ALL ARE ONEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL6Yduik0xc
>>24003423Devastation Optimus is great. Perfect balance of epic leader Optimus and the guy who regularly shit talked Megatron and made cheesy jokes. Devastation Megatron is equally great, he's G1 Megatron but with some depth to him, probably Welker's best performance as the character. It's just a shame that the best (and sadly last) showing of these two together is locked behind an old game that people can't even buy anymore.
>>24003423>>24004251The amazing thing is about 2 years ago the surviving G1 cast did a table read of the very first episode again and Cullen and Welker could pull off the "young" version of the characters almost as well as they used to. Cullen had a few hiccups but not many while Welker not only did the old G1 style Megatron almost perfectly but also all his old character (his Skywarp was a little off but I think that's just because he forgot how to do the voice rather than age). Meanwhile Bumbleebee's VA literally sounded like he hadn't aged a day in 40 years, while sadly Michael Bell sounded pretty old and weak.
>>24005282That just proves how talented voice actors can be over the course of entire decades.
>>24005323It's a lost art. I doubt there are many current generation voice actors that can match these legends. Sadly once they're all gone the evil corpos will just replace them all with AI zombies.

>>24021642I don't get it. What is this supposed to be? Optimus Prime dies in the 1980s movie and his soul enters the multiverse? This is so weird. I hate multiverse nonsense. It's ruined storytelling
>>24021705Seems like the idea that Primes are Multiversal Singularities from the Aligned Continuity is back. Optimus Prime dies he is either resurrected or reincarnates in another reality. Oh Optimus is also known as Convoy. Japanese shows included.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GfMbP43Bfo
>>24021642Well that was just fucking awful. The message is "just give up".
>>24021709I don't like this at all. Why can't they just let Optimus be a normal hero? Why have gods, multiverse garbage, and Optimus jumping through multiple dimensions.
>>24021788It has been established in Beast Wars when Sparks die they go to the Matrix/Allspsrk. Beast Machines establishes the Allsparks sends out Sparks so they can return with all the knowledge and wisdom gathered in a lifetime. In Optimus Primal's case he did die but was reborn in a new body. So reincarnation isn't so farfetched in lore. In the lore of the Aligned Continuity Opimus Prime was always one of the Original Thirteen Primes. He reincarnated without any memories.
>>24021800>acknowledging Beast MachinesOpinion discarded.
>>24021642Watched this in theaters last night and thought it was super confusing and bad. It should have been the allspark telling Optimus to never give up or something and be some kind of meta message to him and the audience, with the end being him being revived at the end of G1. Instead we got some ambiguous voice literally spouting incorrect lies about Optimus being the reason for all these things happening, which is insane. The part where Optimus says as such had me sitting in my chair like "ya Optimus, you are factually correct and this retarded voice is factually incorrect" lmao. Megatron is more to blame for everything bad happening more than Prime is in basically every timeline. Optimus giving up at the end was just bizarre. They shoulda pulled this short and reworked it after Peter Cullen died because it's an absolutely bizarre message on the back of his death
>>24021800>Beast Machines establishesNo. I'm sorry but no.
>>24021818Finally! I'm glad someone pointed this out. I hated how fans keep sucking off this video and saying how great it is. I thought I was the only one who disliked the ridiculous story. It also doesn't acknowledge that Optimus was revived later in G1.
>>24021818Soi writers made Opitmus into Nu Kratos "We must be better bots".
>>24021822They've been on this kick recently that I call "doubting Optimus" and they think they really have a good story point as theyve pushed it now for a few series. The Skybound comics do this to a ridiculous degree, and they needlessly did this with the recent netflix series. It's always a waste of time because it doesn't make sense. Optimus stood up to fight Megatron because Megatron very quickly became a tyrant who wanted to kill all the autobots. Someone had to stand up and fight him. Optimus is in no part responsible for the war being anything other than just a naked slaughter of autobots but the decepticons, so it's retarded to throw blame on him. The mysterious voice also said that Optimus was fighting a war with no end, which is extremely stupid because in G1 it DID end, very explicitly. Beast Wars' history expressly lays out that the Autobots win the great war and there is a long time of peace afterwards. Everything remains relatively chill until BW Megatron shows back up on Cybertron and takes over, but everything before that was chill and that's all due to Optimus. The cybertronians, as humans are never mentioned, presumably outlive the human species in a time of peace lmao. I could keep going but it's just totally insane that this is the angle they tried to pull when it does not make any sense at all, especially when the end of the short shows Megatron getting the matrix and there was even a flash before that showing him with it ruling over Cybertron, so Megatron just goes completely unaddressed and wins. Stupid short stupid idea stupid ending for Peter Cullen's career. They shoulda pulled it or reworked it
>>24021915This also could’ve been a pilot for a new proposal series but at this point it’s unlikely, I think it should’ve been rewritten for a more positive message, don’t think it’s a RUINED FOREVER situation but in all honesty the writers weren’t aware this was gonna be Peter’s last time voicing the character
>>24021920Ya I don't think it's RUINED FOREVER at all, it's just a stupid and borderline spiteful message to end on. Coincidentally spiteful, but spiteful nonetheless
>>24021915A considerable amount of modern writers have a "gray area" problem. They want to tell stories where the morality is gray, the characters are complex and nothing is quite black and white.Issue is, the way they do it is by tearing down heroes, treating villains like victims and generally murking the waters by disguising stupid decisions as character flaws. They take shortcuts instead of actually writing compelling stories.
The problem is for some reason Hasbro started listening to tiny number of malding Gen Xers who have been whining about TF:TM killing Optimus for decades they took everything about Hot Rod and Rodimus as a character and just applied that to everyone else. The poor sod can't even be in the short that got added on to his own movie. >>24021940These "modern writers" are just the people who grew up with BTAS, which did everything to take the boomer comics ideas of "Oh ho ho! This Clock King guy is just crazy!" and made them all sad victims of circumstance.
The message of the short doesn't even make sense. It's being delivered right after Optimus accepts his death. Also the music and sound design sucked. What does everything have the same spooky ambiance and french horns now?
>>24021915"It’s actually a more nuanced issue bro""haha yeah it’s not all black and white""Nah it’s more of a gray""Lotta factors at play, yknow?""So who’s the real bad guy? Who can really say haha?""It’s really complex and nuanced""Wouldn’t expect you to get it bro"
>>24021948To be fair very few people liked Hot Rod/Rodimus even back in the 80s. There's a reason they brought Optimus back and even then the show was pulled not long after.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z0_zJmr0KI
>>24021948>These "modern writers" are just the people who grew up with BTAS, which did everything to take the boomer comics ideas of "Oh ho ho! This Clock King guy is just crazy!" and made them all sad victims of circumstance.I will admit that I don't remember much of that series, but in those circumstances I don't think the villains did much of anything that resulted in people getting maimed or straight up dying like how Megatron and the other Decepticons ended up doing completely intentionally. Having antagonists with sad circumstances around them being antagonists is fine, even in stories where they are doing vile, evil things, but you cannot forget that that does not mean they are excused from taking responsibility for said actions, nor that the protagonists are wrong for opposing them and their actions.
>>24021820Actually it does. The One said Optimus will die for the Autobots again. Prime did die again in Dark Awakening. He was also called Convoy so Headmasters anime is acknowledged as he died also there to restore the Matrix.
oh /m/ being cynical assholes again, what else is new.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t6uTB6QmQk
>>24023240Huh?
>>24022228Those are all different shows and different dimensions. It's not the same "Optimus soul" being reincarnated over and over again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hufuMYVroBAThe director explaining the Optimus Prime Awakening short.
>>24021642I genuinely thought this short was building up to where Optimus Prime would give the middle finger to the Allspark, and tell the Allspark that he never gives up. That he protects the innocent and stands up to tyranny no matter what. Then the Allspark would say you passed the test and congratulate Optimus. But nope. Just a shitty ending that sucks.
>>24021642The entire thing felt like a student film with a massive budget. Like a student director that wants to prove to everyone that he can make "le serious movies" even though it's a cartoon. So he subverts audience expectations and deconstructs Optimus, and says Optimus is the tue villain. Reminds me of what they did to Luke Skywalker. Terrible. >>24023790This Director worked for Lucasfilm. No wonder this short is so badly written. No wonder they tried to make Optimus into the villain. Typical Lucasfilm.
>>24023790Just checked this guy's imdb. He's never Directed anything before. He's only worked in the special effects and graphics department. Of all people, why did Hasbro trust a total noob with such an important short movie? They couldn't find another Director to handle it? Someone with more experience.
>>24023883Most likely they didn't expect the short would really matter much, being a cheap cash in for the films rerelease. They didn't count on Cullen dying and this being his last performance ever
>>24023790So basically this guy doesn't have a clue and had no clear idea on the story he wanted to tell
is this what the kids call a "humiliation ritual"?
>>24023790About what I expected, a mess. Weirdly, the short only works in a very specific context of Japanese G1, since he not only is tested in a similar way, he actually manages to unite both factions and become friends with a reformed Megatron, and if it's confirmed, eventually retiring to help out in the Galaxy Force universe and dying of old age there.
