There is a detail in ALL of uc that gets commonly overlooked, and its that feddie pilots always strike the cockpit and zeon pilots always strike the head. Even bernie, a total noob in a broken kai would have defeated the gundam alex if he just knew the feddie tendency to murder the pilot, which has been a massive taboo for pilots since ww1. It genuinely takes more skill to strike the head to disable the suit than to strike the torso and kill the pilot, and thats why its exceptionally rare to see them fight as skillfully. I know some people excuse this as "zeon only targets the head because they dont want to cause a nuclear reaction" or whatever, but that only further drives the point, the feddies are wreckless idiots and their only good pilots were amuro and that goofball from the titans.

I was in Japan for 3 months in February when it was in theaters, I held myself from watching it due to the lack of subtitles but I finally watched it today and It was a masterpiece, Hathaway's psychotic breakdown when he see's the mass production Nu and the flashback showing the POV inside his Jegan during Char's rebellion was the icing on the cake, I loved that that they showed a noticeable age difference between the 12 year old Jegan cockpit and the XI, I love little details like that and one thing I found cool was the POV from within Lain's cockpit, you could see the XI's beamsaber slowly melting his cockpit with Lain panicking inside, I found that cool.

The color change is a cockpit feature brought in from the Gryps war days to make opponents and obstacles in space more visible.

The CGI mech fights are still weird. Guess that happens when you license Guns N Roses and some nigress for your music. I enjoyed the first movie more.

This movie was a pile of shit and made me angry. It is the worst Gundam movie and it's not even close.

I don't want boring barbie picking out dresses and furniture for an hour. So I can watch CGI fights on par with Reboot or early Gundam evolve. And no one has any personality and there's no plot progression. The movie builds up the assembly and then ends before it happens. The only thing that changed was Gigi is now with Hathaway. Nothing else has changed. The double love triangle is written for stupid women just like the music videos were.

I would rather watch witch than this garbage. Witch was shit but it has characters with personality. There is maybe 5 minutes of good footage in this movie and it's all CCA related and nothing around it is watchable. This movie shouldn't exist. Its a filler episode extended to 105 minutes. And the ending looks so badly animated its comedic. MP Nu got a badass kit and it can barely move and none of the weapons even work because every weapon misses the xi without the xi moving. It's all so bad. No one cares about Gigi except desperate virgins. She doesnt have a personality. Shes just a mary sue pet character for the writer and director to constantly praise while she shits up the movie like chronic stomach flu.

Good movie but the direction and soundtrack was so much better in the first movie.

Many moments of this second movie felt almost tedious to watch due to lack of ambient soundtrack throughout most of the movie. And the fucking exposition scene in the Valiant's kitchen where the camera angle kept changing between 10 characters over the course of 20 seconds has to be studied for years to come, holy shit. Loved it. And the "issue" surrounding Amuro's inability to make any lasting impact in the Universal Century, considering his status and legend, is being addressed. He tells Hathaway to go join politics if he wants change but that's obviously a pipe dream to anyone paying attention. Amuro has literally no response other than warning him of not sounding like Char... which he also never had an answer for if we want to be completely honest about that too. It's some very satisfying dialogue all triggered just by seeing a mass-produced Nu. It seems like Hathaway did succeed in severing his mutual affairs and relationships by the end of it and became really disassociated as they decided to hide his face with his helmet. But Gigi reversed all of that and stopped him from melting Lane while also getting him to take off his helmet, basically bringing him right back where he was. It was a cool match with the Xi also showing it's true face at the end, proving it's a real Gundam to Lane's words. So it turns out Hathaway's true self is more emotional and he actually cannot transcend his carnal lust or mutual affairs. Good movie.

I just finished it. It was mid. The CCA nostalgiabait and brown tomboy sideboob were the only real strong parts for me. CGI mecha is just never going to work for me if this is the best the only studio still even making mecha anymore can do.

I find it pretty unwatchable for an anime movie. Every single shot is so zoomed in you don't see anything but the character.

Mobile suits in UC start at about 18 metres for a standard design and grow to 20-ish by the 0090s. Hero suits are often a bit taller again. The frontline EFF suit in Hathaway, the Gustav Karl, is 22 metres. Xi and Penelope both tower over them, they're deliberately quite monstrous and barely recognisable as Gundams. They're not just taller but bulkier too, it's a very deliberate decision to obscure the humanoid form within them.
Later on when you get to around UC 0120, the meta goes the other way. Size crept up because it was the only way to increase the strength of the suits, but all of a sudden there's breakthroughs in reactor miniaturisation and now you can have a 16 metre tall suit of equivalent output to a 20 metre one, while being more agile, lighter and a smaller target.
The tech progression through UC is a really neat part of the setting, I like how it doesn't always go in one direction.

Yeah, the novel is quite explicit as to how this "Quack Salver" individual (who, if I'm reading this correctly, is actually a high-officer in the Federation that orchestrated the whole rebellion as a soft coup of sorts has been manipulating Hathaway for a while to do his bidding.

The problem with your assessment is that Char knows newtypes don't solve the communication problem. Infact the reason why Amuro dies in the novel is he cannot communicate with Char and his newtype team mates. He just physically screams at them. And he saw Haman have 2 connections and she freaked out and tried to kill people for connecting with her.

Char does not believe newtypes solve the human problems. Char is haunted by Lalah and she constantly brings Amuro and Char into conflict. Char has many canon chances to kill Amuro and beats him in the Dijeh kai then lets him go. Char believes in his fathers ideals as in newtypes exist. But then you have him doing shit like sending the neo zeong plans back in time. Which makes the phenex girl have to tard wrangle alive newtypes to get rid of it. As an addendum to this, in land combat the idea is that you smoke your enemy, not yourself. Obviously you can't always land one in their lap, but the idea is you're worrying about obstructing their line of sight. You use smoke for concealment but you don't conceal yourself in smoke if you have any choice. Doing so obscures your own vision and gives a great big 'shoot in this general area' sign.
Smoke exists in Gundam but most of the fights we see are too in close for deployment to really make a lot of sense.

There's also the physics element of it. Your missile has to lock target, fire off your rail and clear of your plane, keep track of the target, then turn to intercept at its calculated ideal point.
There's very little time for all that to happen up close, and I think you can probably imagine how vanishingly small the window is for having someone on your nose if you're travelling in opposite directions while also trying to evade each other.

Improvements over time have made this less critical though. For heatseekers specifically, 'all-aspect' missiles can lock onto an enemy aircraft from any orientation. Head-mounted cueing systems mean that you can slave the seeker to your head rotation and tell it 'fuck that guy over there' instead of it being boresighted along your plane. These days radar-guided missiles are much better up close than they used to be too. The AIM-7 and Skyflash both had variants designed for dogfight viability and modern active radar missiles like the AIM-120 are much better suited again because they're fire-and-forget.

Like this here is the kind of stuff I think Hathaway did really well. It's got a lot of aesthetic embellishments obviously, but when you look at the MFD your eye is immediately drawn to the functional information anyway. The information also tells a story about both how tightly planned the operation is and the kind of planning you need to do in UC, particularly if you're trying to be covert and not just burn through the interference. The AR overlay jittering around because it's refreshing differently from the underlying video feed and the sensor fusion it's using is imperfect is such a little touch they didn't need to add but I adore it.
WfM had pretty alright UI stuff, I think it benefitted a lot from being produced across the hall from Hathaway.
I love the focus on the symbology
