-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

== STOLEN GROUPBUILD ==

Build a Mecha or vehicle built by one faction, but change its aesthetics and style to its rival faction! Examples include but are not limited to
>Canon examples of mechs being stolen and used by another group (ie: Casval's Gundam, Feddie Zakus, Ashura Mazinger, etc)
>Designs intended for one faction that were repurposed into a design for another faction (ie: Gerbera Tetra)
>What-if scenarios (ie: A Titans color Zeta Gundam)
>Stylistic interpretation (ie: What would a EFF version of the Z'gok look like?)
When it comes to your build, really make it clear that your mecha is being used by the other side!

MGSD is such a wasted line. Instead of using it to rehash popular kits for the 67th time, Bandai could've used it to make MGs of kits that would be too big as a normal 1/100, like Dendrobiun, Alpha Aziel, Neue Ziel, Psycho, Destroy, Neo Zeong, other mobile armors or... Meteor Unit & Kshatriya. good job for that, I guess..

I tend to alternate. And it also depends on the kit. Generally speaking, I find that a lot modern bandai kit with darker/ subdued colors tend to look good enough out of the box with some topcoat to make it matt. The GQ police zaku, the demi barding being my more recent snapbuilds.

I just do the occasional paint job on a kit I really like. Otherwise it's just paneli lining, maybe 10 decals at most, and a clear coat.

Most simple way would be using a pink real touch marker, dot on the skin color parts then lightly blend the paint with thinner.

Artist preference kits actually exists but they are just not as celebrated as Katoki's. MG Vidar is based on Gyobu's twitter illustration, almost every Seed kit uses Shigeta's take over Okawara's, the entire AOZ line. However the thing about gunpla is that it rejects type of curvy, unorthodox mecha designs from obscure source. The fact that Bandai have to sell Revival of Zeon kits via Megahouse subsidiary shows that they don't welcome these kind of designs to their mainstream HG.

which is from Sentinel 0079 as the "GM Late Type" and from the same work as his actual Gundam and Ball Ver Kas we got kits of. It would become the Early Type in 08th and the Type C in 0083, Custom is meant to be a derivative of the Alex and pulls stylings for Izubuchi, it's not at all "A GM is Katoki designed it" that's the Type C ultimately

All you are saying is the reception after the model kit reveal. Kondo's Geara Doga kits exist under Megahouse brand-Bandai's topdog figurine maker because Bandai knew it will sell, they just didn't want that thing to be in their HG line. It is simple as that.

Actually I think megahouse has made a number of gundam items which are very much on the "low demand niche appeal" side of things like the Alpha Azieru bust and catapult decks, it's not like they don't make unique somewhat atypical things compared to the main line already. We don't know what the deal is here. Megacorps don't operate so straightforwardly all the time and subsidiaries do compete with each other and have their own goals and projects to various extents. Aside from that, it's not like you have sales data Bandai doesn't about how much Kondo designs move. The Gei Drei released ages ago in the RD line, they know how much appeal that has in terms of real sales and it's one of the coolest Gundam designs Kondo conceived to be sure. But maybe the truth you don't want is that maybe his shit just ain't that popular. It sure as fuck isn't compared to AoZ if we wanna look at other designers and sidestories that get stuff. All his cool works were decades ago now and their reserializations haven't turned a bunch of heads. Revival of Zeon just isn't a wide reaching captivating work and neither is any of the rest of his Gundam stuff. There's nothing wrong with it but maybe the reason the SEED redesigns, AoZ and Sentinel get shit is because a lot of people like those, and most people would say "sorry what the fuck is a Breda?"

I wouldn't call Alpha Azieru niche since it appeared in CCA and Quess died in it. The thing is actually quite iconic, albeit not as popular as Neo Zeong or Psycho Gundam. Bandai made a 1/400 kit for it too if you are into mobile armors. Megahouse products have quite the budget put into them, the figurine of the same character is like 10 times more expensive than Banpresto's.
>>
>>24002268
It's niche because it's 1/144 scale and an enormous display piece costing a lot of money bro please just apply some common sense
>>
>>24002269
>because it's 1/144 scale and an enormous display piece costing a lot of money
If big and expensive means niche PGU Nu and RX78 are niche. People like you tend to throw around the word niche abit too unconsiderably. Megahouse sells expensive figurine for Lacus, too. Is she a super niche waifu that only 10 people beat their meat to?
>>
Got burn out on robots and decided to go on a girlpla binge the past half year or so. 5 30MS and 5 Megami Devices later, I started feeling overwhelmed by tits and asses and finally got in the mood to build giant robots again.
I'm surprised to find that I actually build stuff better now. I was a tad haphazard with handling robots, but my girlpla binge made me much more careful when sanding and putting the parts together. Gotta maintain her cute face and not fuck up her nice fleshy skin after all. Got much better with handling tiny bits and curves too.

Thank you cute anime girls. I have become a much better builder thanks to you. Now I shall fuse you with giant robots and create unholy (but still cute) abominations.
>>
>>24002268
for what it's worth neo zeong is pretty niche too
not many people legitimately have the display space or desire to dedicate that much space to the design, just like mega size kits, all these things are products with niche appeal
if they released a 1/35th Nu Gundam tomorrow it'd be a niche product too
>>24002276
PGU Nu still takes up less overall display space than Alpha Azieru by a lot but yes, the extremely expensive gigantic model kit is not expected to sell the same amount of units as a high grade at all and is catering to a smaller market of people that can afford to get it, it's not a product that will ever move the same amount of units as the other Nu Gundam models or even close to it
so yes, it's a scale of things, and PGU Nu is probably about as big as can comfortably be displayed somewhere in most people's homes though it still requires a whole dedicated area to itself but it's better than the Alpha Azieru which is basically the footprint of an entire TV or a few dozen high grades standing next to each other. What percentage of people building gunpla do you know personally that own one? A PGU Nu that is. I haven't even seen anyone building it in this thread that I recall. One of my IRL friends bought one, that's all I know personally.

They are only that outrageous as imports since big heavy goods get taxed to death. The line is alive and well, it aims at adults with some spare cash. Unlike literal dead bodies of Ex Model, HG Mechanics and First Grade. They were just too overly niche that Bandai killed them off.

Nu Gundam
Astray Gold Frame Amatsu Mina
Wing Zero Ew
Exia

Destiny

Crossbone X-1
And...Providence, for some reason, which doesn't have an RG?

Unlikely, Argos is most likely to be a space-use armour for it focusing on bits/funnels, they can always do whatever they want but the little bits of lore we have suggest otherwise
In the novels it removes some of the armour though it's never particularly described in detail (still firing out funnel missiles is about all we know that points to any detail they might look to retain for the next movie) and they certainly don't say Odysseus because that wasn't even a thing then for it really.
Personally I would expect it to just be Penelope maybe with something tweaked where it actually loses its armour bit by bit over the fight but I'm just a random anon who loves HF too much.

You will be surprised by how well PG Astray and Unicorn sold. Even the latest PGU managed to woo alot of whales into buying. A HG fan can't understand what MG fan think and MG fan can't understand what a RG fan think. Arguably Gunpla is seeing a decline in term of new kits getting made, but the current surviving lines are definitely not niche. A niche gunpla line will die.

How so? I don't really recall any release of theirs that made you raise eyebrows compared to their already established niche of scantily clad mecha musume. Not unless you mean the Puni Mofu series with the scantily clad mecha musume lolis.
In which case, 30MS already has a leg up on them. One of the earliest 30MS releases were the bunny loli twins, and the official main designer of the 30MS line draws them like pic related.

And speaking of recent koto releases, I actually do like the Yggdrasis Megami Device line Koto released this year. The main premise seems to be tacticool /k/ girls with a few /m/ attachments rather than going full blown mecha musume. They'd probably look amazing riding some kind of mecha exosuit. Kind of like the FAG Gourai-kai one.

I buy kits of any and every scale, it's just how it is. The average person only considers a PG if it's of their fave design, and since there's only about a dozen entries at that scale lots of people just don't get one. Something being niche doesn't mean it is a failure or doomed to die at all, feels like you're conflating those. Fact is every model kit that's over a hundred bucks is starting to get into niche appeal from price alone.

I doubt the mainstream HG line will become niche just because the price keep rising up. Hobby is a test of tolerance, i have been seeing TCG guys spend ten of thousand bucks for literal cardboard. The price, the storage space and all things like that don't matter as long as it keeps giving you dopamine. When someone talk about niche, they talk about the lack of merchandise and public attention to their unfortunately unpopular and unloved IP. There are plenty of people like Kow Yokoyama, Kobayashi, Kondo and the similar guys. You see modelers try their best at mimicking Kondo and Kobayashi, atleast there is something to see and talk about in this specific gundam fanbase. It is like those youtube video essays where the zesty guy talk about "game no one have ever played before" and it is a relatively known indie game. Millions of Japs know about Kondo and his redesigns but the only material they can express their enthusiasm is a 2008 HG and epoxy putty.

First of all, think out of box. Change it's pose with some putty and glue. Also, don't abuse paint chipping effect and weathering. A coat of matte paint and some dirt on the surface is enough sometimes.

I think SEED as a setting can be pretty cool when you look past the main highlighted facets. The "Earth Federation" is comprised of distinct nations and there are a lot of independent actors around in the world doing shit that only come up here and there. Basically more than just ZAFT might steal a Dagger, even entities within the Federation might steal a Dagger for their own purposes, you can do all sortsa shit with SEED's factions.

it's not just a binary on/off thing but whether your paints are thinned enough to flow and spread smoothly without leaving thick clumpy textures behind. when people tell you to thin your paints it's because they see those clumpy bits and can tell the paint was not thin ENOUGH to self-level and leave a smooth surface

Bare plastic would look better because the details are still visible. You smeared your kit in doodoo and chipped off the doodoo. If the "technique" you're using can't be done on thinned paint then it's a worthless "technique"
You're just slopping on unthinned paint and chiseling on it or some shit. Real paint on real 1:1 scaled things is thinned and can chip. Do you think real chipped paint on real things is completely unthinned?

I like the more muted colors you chose.

Ammoknight anon here. That mechanical detail doesn't actually exist. I scupted that shit with putty lmao. The feet is a spare part from Hammerknight with some other spare parts glued on, it is not very detailed from the start but most of MK44 looks very minimalistic. Your Breda has too many existing details so when the paint coats piled up, their density loss became noticable.

How did you make the eyes and sensor glow? Thats dope. That is the MG right?

For colors I just used stock tamiya colors for it all. Except for the frame and gun, I experimented with mixing colors, I wanted the frame muted with a slight hint of metallic. I kinda like the slight two tone to the gun with the body being shinier.

Anyone have experience in fixing seamlines for heads like pic related? How would I close off the head without the face part being stuck inside, for easier painting? I know the whole c-clip thing for fixing forearms, but how about something like this?
>>
>>24002524
i didnt intend to shit on another mak anone it was just my intention to point out the difference in treatment. i remember well i got shat on when i puttied my seapig a while ago. theres definitely a clique of retards who recognizes my builds and spams the thin your paint meme just because.
>>
>>24002529
sometimes you can cut part of the back of the face so it can slide in from the bottom
>>
>>24002527
It's the master grade. I used fluorescent paint and a 365nm blacklight to make them glow.
The drawback to that is that certain plastics also fluoresce so I couldn't cheat and just clearcoat the white parts.

>>24002529
Paint the face first, then put masking tape over it before assembly. Then you can remove the seam and paint the head safely since the face is masked.

>>24002530
Maybe you always get shit on because your work is bad and your attitude is worse. You just have nothing good to offer. You refuse to learn anything or do better and you freak out every time someone correctly tells you to thin your paints.

and some people here are incurable about their holy grail of „thin your paint“ being corrected. ive had people tell me wrongly to thin my paints when the cause was putty underneath. now people talk about clogged vents when i saw the blank resin mold vents and those things had 0 mechanical detail to begin with. theres just no leeway with the thin your paints garbage, its just a catch-em-all for „i dont like your stuff“ for whatever personal preference. theres a lot more to be said but itd be wasted energy here

Anons here shit on me all the time and i also being defensive when i'm in a bad mood like that time i posted my Hildolfr, but then again, what is your goal to modeling? Is it to seek validation or is it to pursue art? People around here cut me some slack because i don't post my peking duck Marasai and then claim i'm better than 70% of people here, it is just a fun passion project and it stays that way. If you want praise and validation then you will have to give something better than that Breda and Quebeley because this result is not it, man. Give them whatever the rust and paint chipping you want but don't drown their details into glossy coat of paint.

It's all about turning the helmet into a clamshell and the face as an insert part
How you do it depends on the specific design but the basic doesn't change, you find where you can insert it in from (usually the bottom, you just clip off pegs etc that get in the way of it) and prepare it like that.

For instance with that specific design you probably only need to cut the three circled elements. I'm not 100% sure without checking the assembly myself but I think that bit on the top of the head is a locking slot for the forehead. Just cut em off and presto, you can slide that whole block directly up into a seam removed helmet.

I think he shouldn't do that. The face is also the socket for the neck and locks at the forehead. Cutting the pins will ruin the head completely.
>>
>>24002582
I don't own the kit to reference but just from this instruction display I'd still absolutely do it that way, it shouldn't interfere with anything. Especially not "ruin it completely." It'll be just fine.
>>
>>24002582
Just print a socket and glue it in afterwards.

My concern is how the face will be dislocated from the supposed position. Zeta Plus's face is quite literally in the free reign with nothing else keep it in place beside the the pins because the helmet is full of hollow space. I still suggest liquid masking over trimming.

You glue it into place man, it's not rocket surgery. Guarantee you a bunch of surfaces are still touching on the inside and it lines up nicely, but if not, if you can't see it looking off then it doesn't matter if it's a micron off centre.
>>
>>24002590
Not the seam removing anon but i literally can't stand it even if it is a micro meter off. Gluing it back is not the problem, it is that possibility of it being dislocated that bothers me.

Things are imperceptibly off even with OOB fits, if you can't tell you can't tell. Like I said the piece is still going into a frame meant to accept it, it's not just going into a void and those were the only contact surfaces. That's basically never true. It's a nonissue.

Ive got other places I can post and I get several hundred likes there. Really no need to put up with this bullshit anymore.

Same Anon here asking about fixing seams for that head. The face part is used for the ball joint on the bottom part with the back of the head being the part that would secure it in. The top side of the face piece in red, slides in the other red circle part on the front half. I still don't know how to fix the seamline of the head without having to resort to liquid mask. Anyone have any ideas?

>>24002610
Despite not being completely sure how the front and back faces of the shoulders will look in the final form still, I've got the fundamental form of the shoulders down. I've shifted to a three block design where there'll be a central unit between the front and back panels. I wanted it like this because I want the entire shoulder unit to be able raise and lower instead of having a fixed position on that axis. It also makes room for stuff on the inside of the shoulder.
>>
>>24002621
Just don't snip the forehead bit, you can use it as an anchoring point, it has room to slide in
You may just need to trim the depth of the "peg" a little to work with the room there is
The solution I'm presenting is the way you do it
>>
>>24002618
Then leave, you drama queen.

>You post one picture of a primed model thats not even get finished
I believe the issue here is that it is not actually primer, but actual gray paint. When he posted his Breda build several threads ago, i assumed it was a wip until he finally gave me the answer >>24002370
I still think this is salvagable. It is a resin kit, just strip the thick paint and start over, or raw dog it with matte coat and panel liner but i don't think he is willing to do that.

Ill also never start thinning my paints to an autistic degree because I dont even enjoy airbrushing. I eyeball it and to me its just a tool to get to a result, not a science. I design and draw mechas in my free time. I like to come up with paint schemes and modifications for models. Maybe that was too creative for this consumer culture thread thats all about shitting out the cleanest looking MG build with RBB lighting (which some malaysian at a con will have done ten times cleaner before you anyway). So, mayhaps, fuck this thread and its autistic „culture“.

People love to bring up the Ver Ka poll, but neglect to mention how only 2700 people voted and G-Self barely won at 16.8%, followed by Barbatos Lupus Rex at 16.0% and God Gundam at 15.4%. Bandai's never going to base their next release on a loud minority, not after they made a big stink about the MG Turn A Gundam only for them to end up in stacks at 70% off just weeks later.

The issue has never been whether you should do clean build or not. The issue has always been specifically with that guy who clearly doesn't understand and just slap thick gobs of stuff . It's paradoxical, but it takes control to make a mess that looks chaotic. Like with weathering, it's a thin line between making something look as though it's gone through wear and tear but in a artistic manner vs looking as though it's just been dumped in the mud and then dragged along the road.

Here is my serious take instead of being mean. His problem even if the paint is super thinned is how his chipping breaks the overall appearance of the robot, it would still looking less like a Breda and more like a visual noise. He probably tried to paint it using Licoln Wright's guide but here is the thing. His build has a specific design in mind. Regardless of the chipping and weathering, you can see the body is green, the face and pauldron are sky blue with some brown accents around the whole body. Anon's Breda is a grey blob with some tan as the finish, it doesn't have a base finished design to "destroy".
