lol look at the thread, they are already melting down.
Now for my own opinion this shouldn’t be taken seriously & more of a fun tribute to the series but I’m also expecting it to be respectful to it also. Knowing the Japanese they’ll easily understand that it’s something that was made for fun and not of mockery. I’ll definitely check it out if it’s good(& funny)

>>
Parodies made from a point of mean spirited derision or lack of genuine understanding always fail to make any real point and inevitably fail. You can't successfully parody or homage something you don't fully understand or actively look down upon. This isn't being made because anyone involved is passionate about Power Rangers, Super Sentai, or tokusatsu. It's being made because nostalgiabait is profitable, and they think the silly weird Japanese spandex and monsters show is an easy target for mockery.

Seems like there's scant plot details, but I guess it's more sci-fi than comedy.

>Some juicy details already about Daniels' next project:

>The story for the feature is a described as involving global warming, time travel, as well as a possible superhero angle. And there are two timelines, one set in the 1980s and one set in present day. The protagonists of the story are teens…at least in the 1980s-set timeline.

>Daniels are said to have been casting the teen roles since 2024, before postponing the production one or more times. (Streamlining the story from an initial three time periods to two impacted the script writing, and was one of several factors behind the delays.) In fact, they may already have their choices to play the teens, but have been waiting to cast some of the big-name roles first.

>Initially, Daniels had their sights on Ryan Gosling as the big name for the feature. The role was that of the father of one of the teens and was, as substantial as it was, supporting in nature. Gosling, after initially agreeing, thought it should be larger and asked for script changes, according to sources.

>Daniels did not necessarily disagree but there was a larger issue. The project, which had already pushed, had to start production by the end of summer or early fall because it had received a California tax credit. Accommodating Gosling would require more script revisions and time was simply running out.

>So in a whirlwind week or two, Gosling was in then out. Daniels scrambled and sources say there was even a time when Jack Black was considered. The duo quickly pivoted to Damon, who is already well-liked at Universal for not only starring in the Bourne action movies but as the lead of Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey, which the studio releases in July.

Wow so many comments are seething at the idea of Americans making fun of Super Sentai.

Sorry but Americans spent 9 billion dollars on Power Rangers during the 1990s. They have every right to make fun of Super Sentai. Americans supported the show more than Japan and have earned the right to make fun of it.

No they haven’t. Normies don’t even know what super Sentai is, and when they do they say Japan ripped off the power rangers. I don’t mind if they make fun of super Sentai, the issue is when the jokes aren’t funny. Which is what happens with the zoomers who write this shit get involved. Their jokes suck.
>>
>>24006971
>No they haven’t.
Yes The Americans objectively have. They spent way more money on Power Rangers than the military budgets of most small and medium sized countries. You can't dispute this. It's an objective fact. Americans spent more than anyone else. They have earned the right to criticize.
>>
>>24006238

>>
>>24006971
>Normies don’t even know what super Sentai is,
Eh...much more people know than you realize. They just don't care. YouTube has an english sentai and Toku channel. Same with streaming apps like Pluto TV and others. People largely don't care that much. Some even say power rangers is better storytelling.
>>
>say american shit is dumb
>americans, instead of agreeing and saying "yes it's dumb why couldn't they make something good?" double down and say "no it's not bad, and even if it's bad we can do it because we want to!!!"
>they cry about people thinking a joke 30 years too late is stupid
>>
>>24006238
I mean it's still better than the last season of Power Rangers'suit designs but that's not saying much. Getting the PR reboot cancelled because of this is sure....something.

I wish someone would do something more like the new Masters of the Universe movie. it can still have comedy but still be the thing. It seems divisive but tons of fans loved it and the designs were all pretty accurate considering Hollywood.
>>
Nothing can ever surpass the Danger 5 Power Rangers parody. Or that show. it was perfect.
>>
>>24006990
I notice you tried to dodge the point I made that when westerners make fun of toku stuff, the jokes are always bad and lazy. Struck a nerve?

>>24007046
That’s what I just said. Normies dont give a shit. The only shows on Tubi are several decades old, and most just say “is this a power rangers thing?”
>>
>>24007058
You are trying to argue that Sentai is some rare obscure nerdy thing. It hasn't been that way for years. Westerners are aware of Sentai (And note that I said "aware". Not obsessed with or fans of it).

They just don't care. This also means that Super Sentai doesn't have any appeal or staying power in Western countries. Whatever dream Japan has of Spreading Sentai worldwide is a failure. It needs to be localized like Power rangers.
>>
>>24007052
Danger 5 is fantastic, but I think it's broader than just toku.

>>
>>24007133
>Nah. You’re just an idiot.
Yes sentai does NEED to be localized. Deal with it.

Most Western people don't want to watch very quirky Japanese teens acting like they are Japanese anime characters, AND read subtitles. At most you will only cultivate a cult following. Nothing more.

Traditional Japanese acting is way too over the top and they overact way too much for Western viewers. That's why Power rangers succeeded but sentai failed in the West.
>>
>>24007142
>Yes sentai does NEED to be localized.
No, it doesn’t. You may prefer it that way, which is cool. But “need” is just your stupid opinion. You’re using the exact same logic the 4kids execs for One Piece, and look how that bombed like Nagasaki.

To be fair, more than 30 years. Even if you count the hiatuses, it's more than half as long as Super Sentai. If Super Sentai was an institution by the early 90s, about 20 years after premiering, what does that make PR now?

No. This is your Japanese obsession with showing "respect and honor" despite making fun of something. That's why most Japanese comedy (with a few rare exceptions) falls flat. You aren't actually willing to offend people. You play it safe.
>>
>>24007268

Are Americans now allowed to make fun of Japan?

You could post the same picture when asking why Japan, China, and Asia focus so much at making of America in their media. How many anime and manga show America being incompetent war brutes, and Japan being superior?

But the moment America slaps back, everyone in this thread loses their minds.

You can make fun of Japanese media stuff just not Asian racial stereotypes or Japanese history. Making fun of their brightly colored spandex with ridiculous pose tv shows, their ridiculously stupid game shows and their tentacle porn is all fair game. It's like how you can make fun of Korean women being over the top with their simping for K Pop guys so long as you don't make fun of Asian people in general

The problem is that they claim everything is Japanese history. There are fans saying Super Sentai is a national treasure and should be respected. Same with anime. The Japanese government declared anime to be part of their cultural heritage.

The Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs has explicitly included tokusatsu and Super Sentai in government cultural-policy discussions. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes Toku and Sentai as important cultural activities and supports their preservation, development and international dissemination in promoting Japanese culture. They have even claimed that Power Rangers is just another form of Super Sentai, and thus Power Rangers helped spread Japanese culture around the world.
>>

Power Rangers and more specifically Saban has done generational damage to the tokusatsu genre as a whole.

>>

I don't think they did a sentai themed music video. But they did "direct" a photo shoot for a fashion magazine with Jennifer Coolidge. If you ask me, it didnt display much affinity or love outside of a surface level appreciation of the kitschy visual aspects of showa era tokusatsu.

Completely subjective and overused. Whenever you don't like something you can just claim it's mean spirited.

>or lack of genuine understanding always fail to make any real point and inevitably fail

Also subjective. You have no idea how many episodes of sentai they watched. Heck Matt Damon has enough money to fly to Japan and meet Sentai actors and Directors personally to speak with them. His understanding could surpass yours.

Claiming super Sentai as off-limits seems like a step too far.

I mean I'm an American but I still think it's true. Rev. W. Awdry famously remarked that once the Americans got their hands on his series it would be ruined immediately, and he was dead right. I'm not saying that America doesn't have the right to poke fun at people, but there's a fine line between making fun of something because you love it and making fun of something because you don't get it, and a lot of hollywood stuff, at least to me, feels like the latter. This has been going on for years, it's a famous joke among fans of both anime and cartoons that basically every anime parody or joke in any mainstream production always revolves around the same archetypes and is rarely if ever genuinely thoughtful. Even american media in and of itself isn't immune from doing this to its own media; there's a reason the term "millenial writing" gets thrown around. American media, at least as of writing, seems to have a serious problem both with taking other media, or even itself, seriously, and that degrades everything.
>>
>>24017558
During the 1990s, the Executives at Toei famously gave several interviews where they whined, bitched, and complained that the Americans changed Super Sentai into Power Rangers. They complained that Westerners just don't understand Super Sentai's charm. They also thought it was extremely unfair that Power Ranger was a worldwide hit while Super Sentai failed outside of Asia. The Executives said they just don't understand why Western people would love Power Rangers but not love Super Sentai. He was very bitter in the interview. It seems to me that the person who doesn't understand things are the Japanese. And they are bitter about it.
>>
>>24017563
>During the 1990s, the Executives at Toei famously gave several interviews
Can you even cite one interview? The executives at Toei never expressed grievances towards Power Rangers in the 90s. They were the ones signing the rights away, after all, even completely dumping their direct Sentai distribution in some other countries like France and Brazil in hopes of catching on in America through Power Rangers.
>>

Power Rangers really lucked out being filmed in LA at a time when a lot of stunt coordinators are looking for work, TV based tokusatsu was at sort of a lull in Japan, and there was a lot of cheap talent in LA looking to break in.
Like there’s an alternate universe where Koichi Sakamoto got stuck working in DTV action movies or stage stunt shows because he never got to cut his teeth on power rangers and go back to Japan with all this experience working on the US side
>>
>>24018097
It's baffling how after all these years, we never got original zords, we got concept art that never got made due to cost, we got Space Titanus as a toy but not as a thing in the show. Even South Korea managed to get a Kyoryuzin for their Kyoryuger Brave.

They got a show with entirely new footage while PR always had to use stock footage for nearly all action scenes.

The real frustration is Japanese writers unwillingness to change. They KNOW what appeals to Westerners and saw it during the 1990s. Yet they continue to use the same sentai formula and refuse to change.

When was the last time Super Sentai used a realistic down to earth story with just regular people? No space pirates. No knights from ancient times. No aliens. Just regular Japanese teens or students facing everyday issues while being Power Rangers.

They tried to make Ohranger like that but whenever japan has a major tragedy happening, they fellatio the goverment and news media on what could be the cause so they blame it on fiction, so they tampered with it, same reaosn why CLAMP wasnt allowed to finish X1999 the way they wanted because ''oh noes, too soon and close to home, oooooh'', so they reshoot Ohranger to be about machines, and then they made CarRanger which was more focus on jerkass Toriyama/Rumiko style comedy, and since then, they made their red rangers slacker idiots, and since theymove to shot on digivideo with GaoRanger, they rebranded the show for toddlers and kindergardeners, hence why the cartoony comedy, specially in Abaranger.

Finally a sane post. I'm glad someone can see the problems in Super Sentai.

>theymove to shot on digivideo with GaoRanger, they rebranded the show for toddlers and kindergardeners, hence why the cartoony comedy, specially in Abaranger.

Which also creates diminishing returns with each new Season (excluding Anniversary seasons like Gokaiger). Japanese Toddlers grow up and lose interest in Super Sentai. They view it as a show for babies. This reputation stays with new generations of kids. So each new generation of kids gets less and less interested in Sentai. Ratings drop.

I mean genuinely, yeah. Awdry was famously an actual train autist and he only ever approved of the model series because, for a limited time, it adhered very closely to a lot of that autism, just as a lot of his stories were intended to. As that started to change, he grew dissatisfied. Even in principle I think there's something to be said, just as an anon said much earlier, about the merits of a parody from respect vs. a parody from a lack of understanding. With time, because the people who owned it did not share that vision, the show morphed into something completely unrecognizeable.

>>24018281
PBS broadcast the show, but it was not an American production.
>>
>>24019023
>parody from a lack of understanding.
It's not parody from lack of understanding. They understand Super Sentai or Trains just fine. They may not have the same deep passionate love of trains or Super Sentai as others do. But the people making the parody can recognize patterns, writing styles, and tropes used in Super Sentai and then proceed to poke fun at them.
>>
>>24019029

Personally, I don't think if most hollywood parodies of eastern media, among other things, came from places of appreciation or understanding they wouldn't follow the same surface level patterns for decades on end, to the point of raising complaints among others. This attitude, this trend, truthfully, goes deeper even than parody. I'm of the opinion it leads to nowhere good, nor will it produce good, but you do you.

Right on the money. Subject aside, this attitude towards media, foreign or otherwise, is incredibly destructive to actually making anything good, period.

They can't even sell Super Sentai to most of the world due to the dumb contracts the older Toei executives made in the 90s.

If anything, they complained about those contracts, highlighting that the Power Rangers situation is one of the reasons Sentai ended.
>>
>>24019052
>Yeah this is the kind of ideology that runs american franchises to the ground. Underground even, 6 feet under.
Power Rangers has outlasted Super Sentai.

Super Sentai was canceled.
>>
>>24019074
>dumb contracts the older Toei executives made in the 90s.
It's not dumb. It was a fair trade. Toei was paid around $1 Billion dollars in the 1990s from royalties from Power Rangers. The older Toei Executives said that American money funded Super Sentai during the 1990s through early 2000s. Without that American money, Super Sentai was facing cancelation and toy sales were not good. Sponsors were leaving the show. It probably would have been canceled around Ohranger. American money literally saved Super Sentai and gave you 20 more years of Super Sentai seasons. It was a fantastic trade. So what if Super Sentai can't be sold in other countries? The money was worth it.

Same thing goes for most of the parodies. Super sentai's not some kind of sacred cow, but most of the jokes from the parodies are just riffing off the same things Power Rangers already did to super sentai.

>Hey guys, why don't the monsters ever attack us when we pose? Isn't that kind of silly?
>Hey guys, ever notice we always end up fighting in the same quarry? Isn't that kind of silly?
>Hey guys, ever wonder why we waste time fighting the monsters on foot instead of stomping on them in the giant robot? Isn't that kind of silly?
>Hey guys, we're fighting an evil pizza monster. Isn't that kind of silly?

Like I definitely can't ask for genius, I'm asking for something that would actually make me laugh that hasn't already been used or just plain family guy tier levels of tepid. Those shows where the super sentai are a bunch of loser nerds and a bunch of alcoholic drunks respectively managed to make original gags out of their source material, why can't burgerlanders?
>>
>>24019171
Power Rangers at least established the rules early on. They were forbidden from doing most of what you say. No escalation. Don't summon zords unless monsters grow big first. Contain the threst.

And transformations literally only take a split second once activated. The cool transformations are only for the audience to see. To everyone else in the show, it's just a split second.
>>
>>24019173
Exactly. All of those "jokes" are just riffing off the wikipedia premise and make sense by just watching a single episode of the show. And they're still the only kind of jokes I ever see from western sources. "Look at that thing, doesn't it seem kind of silly out of context?"

most non-Asian countries, even France and Brazil that had licensed Sentai in the 80’s, probably have very little interest from their TV production companies in buying the Sentai license. If they had more interest in toku they’d have tried to license the modern Kamen Rider series which have no such contracts on them. And Toei has no interest doing the marketing legwork themselves. Otherwise they’d have attempted to sell KR overseas more.

Things come out best when there's a moderate understanding of the material and a desire to do something with it the suits the medium. It might be maligned on release, but it will stand the test of time. Pacific Rim, Ang Lee's Hulk, Scott Pilgrim. Most important, the people making it must appreciate and be excited about what they're making. When you don't have one or another of these, you get the various Watchmen adaptations.
