Zilla is a great design but the movie is full of a bunch of whiny annoying human characters that I really don't care if they live or die. The thing you understand overtime is that Godzilla movies live or die under there human characters. Even something like Invasion of Astro Monster, where the monsters are fairly secondary to the plot and effectively just weapons, the human cast is fun to watch and likeable enough you want them to do well. The humans in ;98 are largely unlikable, cowardly, kinda self-serving, or weirdly stand-offish. The kind of people that would get some sort of comeuppance in a toho movie. Jean Reno stands out as being one of the few I can see working in a Toho Godzilla movie. >>24015603I think what really makes it hard is that if you're set on defending '98, you probably know of the animated series which does the monster so much more justice and does a clever way of brining in elements of the Toho movies, the old HB cartoon, and making the humans more tied to Godzilla themselves. The best you can say it's a fine movie, but you can see the concept done better.
