Is Xi Gundam vs. Alyzeus the best fight in the franchise since Full Armor Gundam vs. Psycho Zaku?
>>
>>24018581
No, but it's certainly quite memorable.
>>
Yeah people will try to say otherwise but I literally cummed my pants 12 times watching that fight in the theater. IDK about the best 1v1 in the franchise. We still have Gouf Custom Vs Ez8, Alex vs BarryZaku, FA gundam vs Psycho Zaku, Amuro vs Char final battle etc etc Here's hoping the final battle blows our minds when Lane gets the Penelope back.
>>
It's interesting that Bright lives on a colony. In 0079 it was stated he was one of the Earth born elites wasn't he?
>>
>>24018958
Not as far as I can remember. It's not like he was muttering about the poors or had connections in the Fed government or military during any scenes. Especially considering the shitty posts they gave him after the OYW. Hathaway getting on one of the last shuttles into space in CCA was mostly just him being in a lucky place and time, since Quess pissed off her dad's girlfriend so badly she preferred to die on Earth and gave up her seat.

I vaguely recall Quess' dad saying he owed Bright a favor, but I'm not sure enough about it to make any bold claims.
>>
>>24018581
What the FUCK was the point of this scene when we clearly saw that the Xi is capable of using its beam sabers without drawing it from the last fight?
>>
>>24021763
Hathaway probably couldn't generate the right angle to use it. He tried to break off but Lane wouldn't let him.
>>

>>
>>24018581
Full Armor Gundam vs. Psycho Zaku is not even the best fight of that year
>>
>>24021903
>He tried to break off but Lane wouldn't let him.
You can't be this stupid. It was Lane trying to break away, but Hathaway was matching his movements.

You can tell immediately because Azyleus can't make rapid turns like Xi Gundam can. So the only reason Azyleus couldnt break away was because Xi Gundam could match Azyleus Gundams movements.
>>
>>24022335
retardbro rewatch the scene again
Hathaway first tried to turn out to attack Lane but he turned along with him to he was always facing his back
then Hathaway manages to break away by moving away from Lane
>>
>>24022456
Azyleus CAN'T TURN SIDEWAYS. It doesn't have a Minovsky flight engine.

The entire scene is Hathaway testing to see how maneuverable Azyleus Gundam is. When Hathaway realizes that Azyleus isn't as strong or agole as Penelope Gundam, Hathaway pulls Xi away, grabs Azyleus, and throws him down to the ground.

How can you be this blind.
>>
>>24022488
I implore you watch it again
don't come back unless you do
>>
>>24022335
>>24021903
>>24022456
>>24022488
The entire battle is Hathaway gradually stripping away Lane's defenses and slowly torturing Lane. It culminates with a beam saber being sliced through Nu Gundam's cockpit. Lane was never in control during the battle.
>>
>>24022499
Hathaway was grunting like a girl to keep with it thoughie.
>>
>>24022499
damn isn't wrong and all but I'm saying Hathaway tried to move away from Lane but he turned along with him so he was always facing his back

I rewatched the scene everyone is talking about and it's not clear to me. My gut reaction is that Lane is trying to break away, but Hathaway stays with him. But I don't understand why Hathaway keeps Xi Gundam's back turned to Azyleus Gundam. The fight choreography of the entire scene is very odd. They should hire Tomino. Say what you want about his writing, but his fight choreography is top notch.
>>
>>24022561
you literally watch it frame by frame and you can see the Xi tries to move first but the Alyzeus turns to keep up with him
then it does break away from the Alyzeus by using another angle it can't turn in because it's a fighter jet
>>
>>24022596
Yes but you are forgetting the context of the battle. Hathaway is chasing a Lane. Azyleus Gundam was doing hit and run attacks. Hathaway got annoyed and used Xi Gundam Gundam to chase down Azyleus. Hathaway is not running away.
>>
>>24022719
Hathaway tried to swerve away from Lane and Lane turned to keep up with him
that's all I'm saying
I'm not staking a claim on anything else
>>

The real question is why the fuck is Hathaway toying with the Alyzeus instead of conserving his ammo/missiles considering he doesn't have a mothership to go back to? He literally could've shot the MP Nu's cockpit at this point. Does he actually want to have sex with Lane Aim?
>>
>>24023045
He emptied his whole E-pack on it and the MP Nu inside was still basically intact. Doesn't really seems like he could just shoot him and kill him.
>>
>>24023067
The magdump scene was after that scene and it was obscured by dust so we can't actually tell if the Xi was hitting the Alyzeus.
>>
>>24023045
wasn't it because he had to buy time for the crew running away from Ayer's Rock?
>>
>>24023097
The Alyzeus was just lying on the ground like Yamcha though. I think it's safe to say Hathaway hit him. Presumably dust doesn't affect a MS targeting reticle.
>>24023103
It was, but is also no real excuse. If Lane was dead then the rest of Mafty wouldn't be in danger. But then again, you could make the argument that Hathaway lacked the conviction to kill him until after the schizoid episode.
>>
>>24023110
>lacked conviction
He had just vaporized a bunch of Gustavs though?
>>
>>24023119
The difference, of course, is that he met Lane in person and thinks he's a decent guy.

You can tell how good an animation team is when they have to create original content for an anime. They created an extended battle scene because Bandai said Movie 2 can't be released without a mecha battle. We were debating this 2 years ago and said the novel has no extra battles (besides the final battle) and they will have to make something up for movie 2.

The director, who is obsessed with drama and things looking "cinematic", made this weird and long battle Xi Gundam vs Azyleus battle scene that doesn't make sense. The funnel missiles act like they are drunk and can't even hit a standing still Xi gundam, beam weapons don't kill, Hathaway doesn't shoot the cockpit (even though he went for it several times in Movie 1), and Xi Gundam movies like a weird ballerina and never takes a single hit.

This is totally fine.

This a Movie 1 battle had so much better fight choreography than Movie 2. You can see they are trying to seriously kill each other in Movie 1. Both suits are struggling to just *barely* dodge each other's attacks. Hathaway even gets hit twice. Penelope even has half a dozen Gustav Karl suits backing it up. They are a genuine threat and Hathaway has to carefully weave through enemy fire to escape.

But I'm genuinely confused by Movie 2's battle. Missiles that suck at tracking their target. Dozens of missiles being spammed at Xi Gundam. Effortless dodging by Xi Gundam. Zero damage to Xi Gundam during the dogfight. Enemies attacking one at a time instead of all at once. Azyleus being a piece of garbage. I can't tell if the pilots are even trying. The whole battle was just poorly done. Tomino needs to be slapped for writing such nonsense.
>>
>>24023598
the missiles only land on the Xi/Penelope/Alyzeus when the pilot is caught unware
you can see when Lane shoots down Hala that they work great as long as your target isn't also capable of Minovsky flight

the sticky bit in the fight is the moment Hathaway goes for a ground slam of the Alyzeus instead of slashing it with the beam saber
if you remove that big tail it probably becomes a sitting duck

>Tomino needs to be slapped for writing such nonsense.
what does he have to do with the movie 2 fight?
>>
>>24023598

Can someone explain the scene where Gigi โ€œtauntsโ€ Mace about sleeping with Kenneth? Why did Mace get so pissed that she had to slap her?

Isnโ€™t it already an obvious open secret that Kenneth brought Mace to the federation office specifically so they could smash? Sheโ€™s a literal flight attendant amongst soldiers. What other reason would Kenneth have for bringing her with him? It should've been obvious to everyone what was going on, especially with his womanizing nature lmao.

Why did Mace react like Gigi had just exposed some huge secret?

The missiles work... as long as you aren't fighting a wunderwaffe capable of Minosvky flight like the Xi and Penelope (and the Alyzeus to a lesser extent).

You can see here where the Alyzeus intercepts a Messer pretty easily even when the Alyzeus can't really use it's beam rifle in flight mode.
>>
>>24024033
>You can see here
No I can't. No one can. The scene is too dark and tiny.
>>
>>24024033
>Penelope
Penelope did get shot down by funnel missiles.

I think the point people are saying is that funnel missiles should still be a threat even if you can dodge them. Movie 2 went too far with Xi Gundam dodging them.
>>
>>24024083
>Penelope did get shot down by funnel missiles.
It was like when the Alyzeus was hit by the SAM. If the pilot is caught unware then he's fucked. Although it does beg the question of why doesn't the Penelope doesn't have warning sounds for tracking missiles like the Xi does. You can make a pretty convincing argument that Anaheim put those in because they expected the Xi to fight the Penelope eventually. I don't think you can say the tech for it just wasn't there when the Penelope was being developed.

>Movie 2 went too far with Xi Gundam dodging them.
I don't really think so but missiles here have the same problem as the Itano missiles do in Macross. They only work when the plot says they should work. It's just visual flavor otherwise.
>>
>>24024097
>why doesn't the Penelope doesn't have warning sounds for tracking missiles like the Xi does
It probably does, RWR and MAWS seem like they'd be necessary for any mobile suit. It could simply have a worse one, or something about the way that Penelope is a suit and addon integrated compromises its function versus that of the underlying mobile suit.
Could also be that it's designed for ATGMs rather than mobile suit mini missile spam, or that the Xi's missiles were designed with knowledge of existing warning systems to try and overcome them, like how today you have A2A missiles with smokeless motors to be harder for the engaged aircraft to spot.
AE may have also designed Penelope wrong, as a joke.

So how could Alyzeus have won against the Xi? Obviously it wasn't gonna happen since it's the designated heavy and our story needs Xi intact for the third film but I am fascinated by the idea of a cutting edge machine being undone by a trainer unit. Thoughts?
>>
>>24024249
>>24024097

Xi seemed like it was on the back foot when Alyzeus first emerged. Hathaway had to resort to the head vulcans to shoot down the missiles up close, plus all the smoke and shit everywhere.

Only when it got some space was it able to just outrun them outright.
>>
>>24024252
the AA missile hit was the first big one Hathaway landed on Lane
because it seems the ground slam didn't really do much
I just can't see the Alyzeus winning in any way though

maybe if Lane had the Penelope here the fight would've been a lot more even than movie 1

>>24024249
>Thoughts?
Idea is cool but not happening. Lane just ain't that guy.
>>
>>24024249
>So how could Alyzeus have won against the Xi?
By engaging Xi Gundam with more Gustav Karl support. And attack together from the beginning the raid. Lane waited too long to join the battle.

Have the Gustav use their beam weapons to pin Xi Gundam down and limit Xi's room to maneuver. Tell the Gustavs not engage in hand to hand combat and keep their distance. Their job is just to keep XI busy and distracted. Then while Xi is distracted, hit it with beams and missiles from Azyleus. Constant hit and run. All you need one or a few missile hits to damage the Minovsky Drive. Then Xi is a sitting suck.

If you really want to get scummy, then attack Hathaway's team running away from Ayers Rock. Force Hathaway to stay and defend.
>>
>>24024409
I don't think that would really work because the GKs lag behind the Alyzeus and Xi.

Think about it, from Hathaway's point of view he could zoom alongside the Alyzeus and leave the GKs behind. Once he's handled Lane he can go back and just kill the GKs. It seems the Alyzeus can't really fly in MS mode, it can only zoom in flight mode. MS mode vs Xi would be a sitting duck.

Now if it was a tag team of Penelope and Alyzeus vs Xi, then Hathaway would've been absolutely cooked.
>>
>>24024420
If Hathaway runs away, order the Gustavs to attack Ayers Rock and kill Hathaway's teammates. Xi will be forced to stay and defend.
>>
>>24024432
Hmm. I still don't think that would work because then Hathaway would be forced to spam missile funnels on the GKs instead of holding back like he did. GKs are largely lardasses, they ain't dodging those.
>>
>>24024438
>Hathaway would be forced to spam missile funnels on the GKs instead of holding back like he did.
If he did that, then Xi Gundam won't have any missiles to use on Azyleus Gundam.
>>
>>24024454
Well, it's not like they did much against the Alyzeus. I think the only one that hit was the SAM that crept up on Lane.
>>
>>24024249
Are we allowed to swap mobile suits? If so, I would swap the Gustav Karls for some Zeta Plus or Byarlant suits. Xi Gundam is nimble but essentially it's just a fat flying Gundam. Enough beams targeting it will score a hit and damage it.

Xi Gundam doesn't have any advanced technology that provides increased defensive or offensive power. No psycho frame. No biosensor. No built in beam weapons like a Doven Wolf. Just a plain Gundam. A fat Rx-78-2

Also its special move is bottle rockets for some reason.

Hathaway movies seem to exist in a world where Unicorn didn't happen and i-fields weren't installed into everything. And just being able to fly indefinitely is a huge advantage.
>>
>>24024741
Unicorn itself is basically a stupid way to try and create a world where Unicorn didn't happen. One of its goals is creating an explanation for why CCA is pretty much the peak of psychoframe shenanigans and it doesn't show up much in late UC. It's meant to be a big stupid event so big and stupid everyone just goes 'fuck this we're putting the toys back in the box nobody gets anything'.
So by following the original intent of the novels it's adapting, it's also in a round-about way still respecting Unicorn. Without having to engage with it.
>>
>>24024741
>Also its special move is bottle rockets for some reason.
I'm glad someone else noticed that weird sound effect they used for Xi Gundam's missiles. Any explanation why they choice that? Missiles do NOT sound anywhere close to that weird firecracker noise they chose.

>>
>>24024867
Yep. It's solving a problem that didn't really exist in the first place, and really only drawing more attention to it and making it a significantly worse one in the process.
>>
>>24024838
>explanation for why CCA is pretty much the peak of psychoframe shenanigans and it doesn't show up much in late UC
Tomino said they entered an era of peace for 30 years. That Char's Neo Zeon was the last threat, and after that it was a peaceful era with no more conflict. That's why weapons development halted.

To use a real world example, imagine if after the Soviet Union fell in the early 1990s, no other wars occurred. The Western countries lowered the military budgets to basic peacekeeping and didn't bother developing stuff like Stealth Fighters, hypersonic missiles, rail guns, or Drones. That they stuck with 1990s tech until 2020.
>>
>>24024867
0083 wasn't that bad. The problem was the story. Delaz should have been a much more serious threat and do a lot more damage. That would explain the Federation creating something horrific like the Titans to keep peace.

Instead they made Delaz into this weird hyper loyal buffoon who was tricked by Cima. Even though Cima obviously was going to betray Delaz. Any officer could see she would never be loyal to the cause. And spies were everywhere and Delaz wasn't actually that smart and only succeeded because he had help from the Federation Admirals who wanted him to succeed. How stupid and convuluted

They should have made Delaz Fleet a serious threat. Give the fleet several mobile armors. A hidden base. Have Delaz terrorize everybody in the Federation, and drop several asteroid or colony drops. Make the entire anime fast paced with no time for rest or relaxation.
>>
>>24024913
Nah, even Tomino didn't do that when he made his version with CCA, he knows not to overdo several drops otherwise it gets dumb when the same gag happens over and over again in a short period of time but no one seems to be able to stop it yet somehow Earth still wins in the end

people really need to start talking more on how fight coreography is really important for the mecha genre in the sense it can actually affect the writing when its really bad
>>
so this entire thing is Hathaway throwing his entire ideals and movement into the trash (and also a few trillion dollars of resources and military grade personnel) for some mediocre used pussy of a schizophrenic rich girl?

Is Londo Bell even still a thing by the time of Hathaway? Bright does wear the Londo Bell patch, but he's stated to be the commander of the 13th Independent fleet and iirc, there is lore that states that Londo Bell was disbanded after the Republic of Zeon rejoined the Federatuon in UC100.

She's 19 so right at the cusp of teenage years.

You're speaking as if you don't know they're adapting a completed 35 year old novel trilogy.

Unfortunately, you are asking questions no one has answers to. I'm guessing they just wanted drama for the sake of drama.

Same reason why Hathaway doesn't go for killing shots in Movie 2 against Lane. Or why Lanes missiles are horribly inaccurate even with Xi standing still.

I guess the explanation is that Lane is not exactly sure what he was doing. But he didn't even try shooting at Gawman so I dunno lol.

Anyone know if the the novel mentions anything?

>I still don't get why Lane didn't just shoot Gawman with his beam rifle or shoulder cannons in the first movie.
Well think about it; what happens if Lane shoots down Gawman right in this moment? What does his Messer fall onto?

Lane was doing what nobody else in that scene really cared about; avoiding civilian casualties as best he can. Gawman straight up reduced his altitude to below the Gustav Karls to use the city background as a mass human shield, and acted surprised when the Feds fired anyway.

Lane, on the other hand, only opted to attack Gawman from angles where his fire wouldn't hit the city below if it missed, and only used weaponry that would disable him so that Gawman could control his fall, as the fight is much easier to contain once he's on the ground, as seen in the film. He's the only one in the battle that actually gives a fuck.

Good guy. Middling pilot, maybe, but it's hard not to root for him a bit. He's a moral antagonist in a series where the protagonists are a bunch of increasingly amoral and self-righteous assholes hardly better than those their fighting, ESPECIALLY their leader.

You donโ€™t know that itโ€™s mediocre. It could be Great

This is a massive stretch anon. Beams and missiles were already hitting the city. The Federation didn't care.

The reason Lane didn't shoot Gawman down is because he was showing off mixed with pride in being the number 1 test pilot.

it's not that deep, this was Lane's first on field outing in Penelope and he was just getting the hang of it. Kenneth points this out and threatens to hand it over to Hathaway if Lane doesn't improve.
>>
>>24035014
I guess that makes sense. Though there are ways to get around that. Just use a beam saber to chop off Gawman's arms and grab him.

That excuse only goes so far though. Lane didn't even try to shoot him with his beam rifle. Lack of experience can only explain so much.
