Probably would lose the transformation too, so the claws would probably become an optional attack gimmick for it's mobile suit mode.
For some reason in my memories these were organic flowing angel wings.Watching it now as an adult it's pretty clear the majority of the material on the larger wings is actually static and only the outer most feathers actually move. And the smaller set of wings are also one rigid piece.

There's not much reason to watch the OVA, the extra footage in the special edition is not just battle scenes but a couple of side characters get some minor scenes where they say a few lines and handle a few things in the background of the story's plot. Other than that, the OVA has a slightly different music score and theme song.If you don't mind reading about what the changes are, here's a list.
