IJ is also shown using a single saber which Athrun almost never did (only once and only because it was retraced stock footage of Freedom) but Shinn almost always defaulted to on Impulse. It's gonna be that Shinn deploys in IJ out of desperation because Athrun is away and nothing else can tough SF and it's what sets up Shinn piloting Immortal Justice in the film.
