What do people mean when they say Tomino is a genius at storyboarding? I don't really get it.
>>
On rewatching I notice a lot of little eye movements from characters that are kind of subtle or maybe naturalistic compared to some other anime. Hinting at characters' emotions or what they might be thinking of at the moment mostly.

Don't know if that's what people mean when they say this, and don't know how much of it Tomino himself was even responsible for since it's not like he storyboarded every episode, but that's the first thing that comes to mind for me even if it feels pretty minor.

Tomino pots a lot of animation in his anime. Not always good animation but characters very rarely stand stock still. They fidget, eat, look away, move around or slap each other. Conversations overlap. Stuff is usually very busy.

Tomino tends to keeps things lively, which is surprisingly difficult and uncommon in animation.

He storyboarded G-Reco by himself, and nearly half of Turn A.
>>

I got 4 episodes into G-Reco before I had to admit I had no idea wtf was happening. Beautiful art style though

It's a show you just have to give yourself over to and let it ride you until it clicks.

They mean he got storyboard-corrected so many times by actual geniuses like Dezaki, Miyazaki, etc. he ended up finally getting it a bit.

So you prefer Takahata who also redrew Tomino's boards? ok
>Dezaki is a boring hack
You might want to find a new hobby, you've been terribly filtered.
>>
>>24056743
The Cobra film was only interesting for the first story, after that it was just a boring, barely animated slog
>>
Storyboarding is what old animators did to their subordinates for failing to perform, where they dumped animation cels on their face until they cried
In that aspect, Tomino was a genius

You are a pleb, yes, thanks for telling us.

You don't storyboard on cels, retard.

Tomino's not the best storyboarder, and people tend to oversell his ability here. He has done some amazing storyboard work, but imo he's like 85th-90th percentile at best. Which is still very high, but there are many animators I'd put above him.
One of Tomino's weaknesses is he was never an animator. So his anime don't have the same visual idiosyncracies or specificity as directors who are animators as well. He's a much more interesting writer. That's where his strength is.

Many directors would've been able to animate anime like Gundam or Ideon, but they wouldn't be able to write them.

This isn't a bad thing at all, many directors are like that ex: Takahata, Oshii, Ishiguro, Takahashi etc.Mushi Pro had a bunch of young staff who wanted to work on films but got stuck doing anime.

Absolutely not. You can't even give examples of shows from different directors that have similar characteristics to Ideon or Gundam.
>>
>>24057378
Besides CCA, Victory has the best action choreography in Gundam.

I'm not even saying they're similar, I'm saying many of them have a level of talent and an eye for cinematography that surpassed those shows visually. The kind of shots(or "cuts") guys like Shingo Natsume, Kai Ikarashi, or Shouta Goshozono conceive are often more advanced than a lot of Tomino's work. The recent modern crop of animator-directors have been especially talented. They've pushed anime forwards immensely in just a few years. Shows like JJK Season 2/3 or Tengoku Daimakyo had composition, lighting, blocking, and editing choices that felt extremely cinematic in a way Tomino has never really approached.

That's like amateur era. The real game didn't start until ~69/70.
There's a reason Tomino regards Takahata as one of his masters, and as the animetudes guy says Tomino was then known more for his efficiency than his creative skill.
