When I look back at the /m/ culture of yesteryear I can't help but wonder how it must have been like at the time, with the pirimitive or no internet at all and relying on fan circles IRL to get information.
I can imagine that while there was less access to stuff, the things people did manage to get they enjoyed a lot, and felt more special.
You could say... It's a protoculture...

You don't even need to that far, streaming only became popular in the last decade or so.

That was the case for most things really. You can pick up on alot of the same heart from early comics fandom, especially so in fanzines from the 60's and 70's. The internet itself wasnt so much the problem as much as pushing everything with a pulse online was. You cant effectively gatekeep or cultivate a healthy community on today's net.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but were HG's writers implying robotechnology was the protoculture? I dont enjoy the two subsequent series as much as the initial one so I've never fully understood what they were getting at with the incesant talk of the "robotech masters". It'd have made more sense if the protoculture was just an ancient race of men the zentraedi owned their existence to, then dedicated themselves to tracing the footsteps there of. I recognize the (self-imposed) limitations of the Rick Hunter portion of the "saga", but following his exploits always seemed much more entertaining than what they inevitably went with. I'll also note the ending they went with was pretty ass.
