The appeal of Twijack, for me, is based on how AJ and Twilight were presented to us back in S1. Twilight helps AJ think more about cause and effect. Before AJ was reduced (in my opinion) to the voice of reason, her stubborn streak got her into plenty of trouble, like during Apple Buck Season. Having somepony like Twi there to really help her think about both what she's doing and why she's doing it is important. Meanwhile, Twilight needed a guide to help push her out of the comfort of the library and show her all of the many wonderful things Ponyville and its surroundings has to offer. S1 Twilight was much more theoretical than practical, like how she read up on running marathons in preparation for the Running of the Leaves. If that event had been seen more often, I could envision AJ helping Twi build up more endurance to place in 4th the next season, while also keeping Twi's mind stimulated by being able to discuss the extant flora and fauna due to being a Ponyville native, an earth pony, and a farmer.More than either of those things, I think the two of them highly value their own independence and personal spaces. Neither of them would feel left out or abandoned if one of them wanted a personal day, and neither of them would try to intrude upon the other (like, say, Pinkie or Dashie) during those times. I can imagine them having an argument, and Twi finds herself less angry and more amused at how good AJ is at logically defending her position. I can feel the same about AJ, if Twi were so sure she was right about something, she'd use telekinesis to drag AJ to the evidence. (I like to think the extremes Twilight went to in Feeling Pinkie Keen and her willingness to just accept the absurdity of the situation greatly improved AJ's attitude towards the city slicker).Most importantly of all, though? I think out of all the ponies, Twilight and AJ are the pair where they would finally let their guards down, and able to just relax. Dashie has too much competitiveness (she probably even competes on who's chillaxxing the hardest), Flutters requires too much soft-hooving, Pinkie is a bundle of energy, and Rarity likes her drama. Twi and AJ could both be perfectly satisfied in the middle of a field, AJ resting while basking in the sunset, and Twi with her reading a book, not needing to say a word to the other, and still feel loved.
