Equestria is dangerous and the ponies are prey animals. Manticores, hydras, ursa majors, cockatrices, timberwolves in the everfree forest and other creatures like the tatzlwurm(which could harm discord), quarray eels.
Even creatures like the red dragon that was just sleeping could wipe out pony villages or the green dragon which was sleeping until spike started eating its hoard and was going to kill spike. even teenage dragons have teen takeovers and go around destroying and causing havoc in pony lands.
