This was "the fanservice episode" and I liked it a lot. Many thought it was nothing more than a panda-chucking fest, but I saw it more as "hey the writers actually acknowledge and care about the fanbase to some degree and I think that's neat".

Maybe it did go a little overboard with how much is actually crammed into it, feeling unrelentingly "wink wink nudge nudge" scene after scene.

I think my biggest issue looking back is they didn't take this opportunity to actually use the background ponies featured here more in later episodes to actually develop them into real characters.

Though perhaps that's asking for too much, given they are just background filler characters to begin with and it's on us that we can impose the unrealistic idea that they should be developed like that. People who aren't around the community probably found this episode strange and confusing.

Derpy shutting the door on the mane six running in for the wedding at the ending was hilarious, also.

pandering/self-aware humor is fine as an irregular occurrence, as done in SoL
other instances of that in the show (Fame and Misfortune...) just feel like writers being too lazy to write actual stories
>>
>>43262930
The background 6 are ruined by the presence of a stallion
>>
I would've liked it a lot more if it didn't just feel like a collection of injokes and references.

Fame and Misfortune is funny though because it just shits on the freaks who obsess and over analyse the cute girl show for little girls.

Should be Trixie flag with how you're speaking in the third person, or something.

As a meta episode, it’s highly entertaining and quite a few of the jokes like the Sweetie Drops joke have layers.

Really the biggest complaint I have with it is that you need to be well versed in brony culture from 2011-2015 to fully get all the gags, but aside from that, it’s genuinely in my top 3 favourite episodes from the show.
>>

I enjoyed parts and respect them for daring to go all out. My biggest issue: The Big Lewbowski ponies. Who was asking for more of these guys? It seemed more like Faust's pick than fan service for far more popular ponies, and it made Dr. Hooves' interaction with them forced and weird. Ironically, my favorite parts were with Celestia, Luna, Shining, and Cadence; Hardly fandom personalities lacking roles.
Lesser complaints:
-Cranky's wedding is low investment. Cool guy, just not cool enough for his wedding to frame the fan episode.
-Splitting Octi and Scratch's apartment is a dumb cliche with little basis in their actual working relationship.
-"Great whickering stallions" more than twice is excruciating. "What is this 'man'?" when man is said many times in the series.
-Button's c&d clone. Kind of insulting in a fan episode at that time.
-Gummi's internal dialogue. Not funny after the first time. Kills the pacing.
-DT and Spoonie are oddly missing.
-Twilight still ended it with a speech. Terminal main character syndrome in the episode for backgrounder characters.
-My fave wasn't in it at all.

I liked that they finally gave Octavia a voice but I don't know why they had to appease Scratchtavia shippers by making them roommates, OctaScratch was already more popular than any other Octaiva or Vinyl ship and with this episode they basically guaranteed that it would stay like that with the two characters being chained together forever.
The worst part is they couldn't even make them actual girlfriends like they did with Lyra and Bon Bon so in a way they managed to fuck over both the shippers and non-shippers
>>

Fame and Misfortune was just the writers going

Fame and Misfortune probably wouldn't have happened the way it did if the message of Stranger than Fanfiction wasn't somehow lost on the people it's about.

Fame and Misfortune is stupid because they pretended it was still 2010 and people still hated Rarity the most even though Fluttershy should have had the hate club >:). And Applejack was loved by everypony in the episode which is a reference to the fandom... uh... really unanimously loving Applejack haha..?

Why do you write all of your posts like this?

Is it to make your post look longer?

Just write them as one paragraph.

Wouldn't that be so much easier?

Typing the way you do will make your argument look retarded, regardless of how good your points are.

To answer your question: I enjoyed "Slice of Life"

I also would have loved to see more side character focussed episodes.

Like one with the Pie family minus Pinkie.

It was an odd, but perfectly fine 7/10 episode that's not meant to be taken too seriously. The Lyra and Bon Bon arc felt pretty pointless and underutilized though since all Bon Bon does is jump out a window and then reappear at the end. Having her sneak around and actually help take out the bugbear from the background would've given her some substance at least.

SoL otherwise succeeded in simply acknowledging the fandom in a positive light, whereas F&M failed for being spiteful and preachy.

I think it was a mistake to "celebrate the fandom" for the 100th episode. The fandom isn't what made the show good, the show is. Some YouTuber somewhere said "Amending Fences should have been the 100th episode", and that's stuck in my head for quite some time.
As a fan of the background ponies, I actually dislike this episode because of how much it demystifies the backgrounders. Part of what made them special was how much potential they had. Just enough detail to intrigue and spark the imagination, but no real hard-set canon details that would limit that imagination. But now, if you want to be canon, Octavia and Vinyl HAVE to live together, and it HAS to be in Ponyville. Bon Bon HAS to be a secret agent with two names.

In celebrating the fandom, they actually shortened the fandom's creative leash on its most beloved characters. I really do not like it.
>>
>>43264220
Creativity was already being swept out by the fandom well before. Those fanons were cemented so hard by the majority that anything new would be seen as weirdly contrarian, ignored, or dismissed as cope. Fans got weak at spinning new fanon around those 6, and then had a weird kneejerk reaction to never give any of the dozens of backgrounders a distinct meme personality ever again.
>Octavia and Vinyl HAVE to live together, and it HAS to be in Ponyville.
It's a rental for the wedding only. It's Vinyl's summer home with space cleared for collaborators. It's Filthy Rich's music studio used to lure big names to Ponyville.
>Bon Bon HAS to be a secret agent with two names.
She's one of the many Bon clones. She made it all up to hide the fact that she broke Lyra's vase. She was off her meds that day.

>>43262930
It sucks, but compared to Fame and Misfortune, it’s a masterpiece. Any episode that’s written with the adult fans in mind is a humiliating piece of shit that has no fucking reason to exist and which EVERYONE should be embarrassed by. Just make the show for little girls! How fucking hard is that, you goddamn retards?!!!?!??!!?!?!!?! Holy fucking shit!!!! It’s so bad! Making shit for adults RUINED the goddamn show!!!!!

But Fame and Misfortune’s message is literally that they don’t have to put any work into the show because little kids don’t want quality… despite actively pandering to the adults. It’s skin-crawlingly bad.

>>43262936
Correct.

>>43263038
Wrong.

>>43263055
Little girls aren’t braindead retards incapable of thinking about anything they see. The same EVIL shitheads responsible for the story of that abomination of an episode were the same monsters that decided to end the whole goddamn show promoting child murder!!!!!!! (M.A. Larson has gone on record insisting he had NOTHING to do with the story and that his attempts to improve it were rejected.)

>>43263335
Yup.

>>43263412
“This terrible episode wouldn’t have happened if people had responded better to another random episode that’s just as horrendously bad.”

>>43264220
Yeah, it’s awful. And that shitty fucking epilogue episode was made just as the finale rape in the coffin to destroy all fan creativity forever. It’s no wonder the fandom is so dead. Fuck you Josh Haber, and fuck you Michael Vogel!!!! M.A. Larson, I don’t personally like this episode, but you’re okay in my book. But seriously, fuck EVERYONE who lasted to Season 9. That’s a level of shit-fuckery where you’re basically evil for “just following orders” and helping to create something that’s such a transgression against God Herself. As soon as Larson was forced to write that abomination, he knew he had to get the fuck off the show forever, and good on him for that. Any name you see in the credits of Season 9 is an AWFUL person!!! Except for (maybe) the voice actors.

It was pretty okay on its own but horrendous within the context of the shitty failure of an episode. I’m a little annoyed that he even TRIED to make anything good to go with that script. Like, seriously, it did not deserve it.

>>43265341
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ve responded to all these lame arguments before. If you really want to get into it, find me at Mare Fair and we can debate. I have no time for these type of interactions anywhere besides IRL anymore.

I find your defenses of this scene to be an abhorrent abomination against the Sunny flag you use. There is a zero percent chance she would support that. And no, her love of Twilight is NOT evidence that she would have, because believe it or not, it’s possible to not know everything about a historical figure. The records on that were probably destroyed sometime during Opaline’s initial attack, so Sunny is simply naively unaware of what a monster her idol was. If you disagree, let’s hash it out IRL. I’m gonna win, just FYI, but you may try to debate me.
>>
>I have no time for these type of interactions anywhere besides IRL anymore.
>Anyway here's another paragraph of online interaction that I made time for.

Bad pacing, the episode felt too slow and simultaneously too fast, it felt like they wanted to actually play out some things but had to rush other segments. I don’t like unfinished stories and they should’ve just stuck to cliff hangers to let fans develop or guess what happened next (embrace creativity?)
Doesn’t help with that last scene where they (using a couch) somehow ride all across Ponyville to grab everything for the wedding, that just felt too silly, especially with Gummi’s monologue as >>43263160
says.
Other then that, seeing Celestia and Luna interact was nice, It was refreshing to see a little bit into the lives of the background ponies, but the background ponies got ruined by stupid headcanons they threw in (Bonbon’s some spy now what the fuck?), would’ve been way more interesting to develop something like the flower trio or maybe Carrot Top in her garden or something (and Carrot Top’s family?).
I don’t know, I don’t like this episode, and the one that succeeds it in S7 is just a pure punch in the face for anyone who likes the show and I was genuinely so pissed off the first time I watched it, the only thing that redeemed that episode to “barely OK” was Daniel Ingram always somehow composing the best kino to outbeat the shitty dogshit episodes.
>>

Bon Bon being a spy is a joke about her multiple voices. It's been a long time, but I believe there were spy fanons prior. At least as a ventriloquist. I don't understand how fans promote embracing creativity, yet deny out-there stuff like the S.M.I.L.E agencey, while wishing for lukewarm SoL like "garden pony does the gardening." If Carrot Top wasn't obsessed with an Apple mafia conspiracy or launching a space program to go beyond us, I'd rather have another m6 or cmc episode.
