Blatant NMM rip-off without a compelling backstory or charisma. Appeared in a finale which used the Lore Bible as a cum-rag even more. Forced menacing "threats" that Angel Bunny could've kicked to the curb.

Stygian studied dark magic in hollow shades, dark magic is fueled by negative emotions, it seems to come with some kind of agency, it speaks to you, we saw it with inspiration manifestation, we saw it with juniper’s mirror, the tantabus, it feeds on insecurities or rage within its host and eventually can combine with them, magic responds to will, but it’s like a feedback loop with negative emotions so that’s how you end up with the “nightmare forms” like nightmare moon and Gaia everfree, monstar, midnight sparkle, Sunshatter sizzle, it is still their goals and feelings but it is no longer the same person exactly, in Stygian’s case this does feel a little bit different, it may be a more targeted magical parasite/umbrum/demon thing as it’s obviously designed more reminiscent of venom symbiote, it’s around him in a more physical way than usually shown but it’s similar to tantabus, maybe preexisting rather than made BY him like the manifestation book was to rarity

if the idea of bat ponies originating in hollow shades is to be taken as true it shows that what they look like it a result of it’s effects, slit eyes, bat like wings, sharp teeth, darker colors, curving horns. Sombra is basically a batpony, he just isn’t a Pegasus. These kinds of effects aren’t necessary tied to nightmare forms but show up in them often, they seem to be baseline effects of certain kinds of dark magic, the curved horn part maybe to that black and green and purple magic, nightmare moon shows all the same features except no curved horn and she doesn’t use that magic type. Stygian’s horn curved when he started using this shadow magic though. I think the Asian unicorns like mistmane get their curved horns because instead of forbidding dark magic they have a yin yang thing going, still bends the horn but they don’t let it consume them, gray magic users.
