Mommy Edition

previous thread: >>43178033

Fallout Equestria, a story that bleeds two franchises together to build something magical. On one side, you have death, destruction, decay, and misery - on the other, you have ponies. Doesn't sound like it should mix? You'd be surprised. When the world around you is wasteland, all you're left with is hope, and as we all know, ponies can do spectacular things with just a little hope.

Read Fallout Equestria by Kkat to appreciate the setting that many writers have then lent upon after being so captivated by the wonders.
The original story which spawned its own fandom can be found here: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/119190/

These next four stories comprise the rest of what is considered "the big 5", alongside the original. They were biggest hitters early in the fandom, be it for having started before many others, their length, or overall quality.

>Project Horizons:

>Pink Eyes:

>Heroes:
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/662/

>Murky Number Seven:
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/47300/

Though, a reminder; just because these are the most well known, that isn't to say that there aren't other stories out there! There are many hidden gems that simply don't get the love they deserve purely because people don't give them the chance. Why not open your heart and try to find a new favorite? Anons are absolutely welcomed and encouraged to return with fic discussion of even the most obscure fics!

Fan games:
>Fallout Equestria: Remains
A Fallout Equestria Roguelike. It is the best thing to come of the fandom recently. Seriously go play it https://foe-remains.gitlab.io/main_en.html

>Balefire Blues
A Hearts of Iron IV mod. In it you take control over various FoE factions seeking to conquer the wasteland. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2307988796

>Dust Town
A derivative of Pony Town, set in the Fallout Equestria universe.

Finally finished reading the original Fallout Equestria. Now I can join the many, many critics in saying it's not great.

Biggest problem is kkat's choice to structure the story like a playthrough of a Bethesda Fallout game. This is a monumentally bad idea which other FoE fics fortunately do not emulate. Most of the story's problems are because of it: the main plot unfolding like a series of disconnected side quests, the pointless descriptions of looting locked containers and hacking terminals, the excessive combat scenes against 'NPC' enemies which don't matter because injuries can be healed immediately, etc.

But besides that, there's so many weird, awkward writing choices in FoE. Characters dying suddenly (Monterey Jack, Steelhooves) or right after being introduced (Nightseer). Littlepip's awkward, grating internal thoughts. Some scenes have way too much detail, and others have far too little. Certain world details are repeatedly explained and called out for seemingly no reason. Just so much awkward, awkward, awkward!

I don't regret reading it, and it was good for picking up some lore details I didn't know, but it definitely won't stick with me the way something like Murky did. The story really is deserving of a rewrite.

Also I'm thoroughly onboard with the whole 'Book of Littlepip is Homage propaganda' idea, solely because of Pip's narration.

>I was seething with rage. These ponies were SICK and WRONG, and I was totally justified in killing them.

This is exactly the kind of line you'd insert into a story to justify all of Littlepip's actions for the NCR and Twilight Society.
>>
>>43286718
>Characters dying right after being introduced
>Nightseer
Genuinely the most confusing decision I've ever seen from a writing perspective. You don't just give a character unique identifiers, particularly when said character is a member of a species known for being a networked collective, and then just off them before you can do anything actually interesting with them beyond 'btw they're wearing Luna's bones' cus that's an easy way to get S1-era horsefags angry.

When I read it I thought it was really good for something from 2011. Most fanfics from back then are really bad compared to today. But yeah, I noticed the prose and character writing seemed simplistic in it compared to Project Horizons, and so was the lore being simplistic.

Fallout Equestria seems like it's emulating MLP and Fallout, and the MLP part would be like keeping archetypal characters because that's how they are in the show and having moral lessons baked into the narrative, but Project Horizons is more like humans that are pony shaped. I like Project Horizons approach more, because it feels like there's a lot of stuff going on, like feels living a breathing.

This is also why FoE feels Littlepip centric, like the world revolves around the character and the themes.

They're mostly small pisces fish, which are endemic to the area and useful for making minor alchemical and magic inks. You can find them pretty much anywhere the waterworks run just because they like the confined spaces and have had two hundred years to infiltrate in from the ocean.

The two big lights on the east side of the bridge are my landmark for the cancer's presence. Party's convinced he's chasing them but he's actually pissed at and hunting down the pegasi gang that just set off a 'balefire bomb' further north in the city.

I would have been more sympathetic towards Deus if the book weren’t constantly bringing up his 40k sized body count. Damn mare keeps thinking she can fix anyone when she’s the only one that ever stood a chance of being fixed to begin with.

It really didn't help Somber's case for most of the angst that Blackjack's slavish, suicidal devotion to waiting until she was attacked first meant she never actually faced any of the moral quandaries that the narrative voice alluded to. With vanishingly few exceptions, Blackjack's romp through the wasteland was dominated by acts of self-defense and defense of others.
Ultimately she came across as a character dismayed at causing death for any reason - a sensible trauma, but her feelings of moral confusion didn't strike much of a chord besides a single digit number of incidents.

Genuinely the worst part of Project Horizons. It's completely unfair for others to blame Blackjack for every single death or mistake in the Wasteland, and for her to internalize that and think she has to save everyone or else she's 'failed.' Every other FoE protagonist has the emotional maturity to take lives when necessary and to accept when things go wrong.

Finished Book 5 of Project Horizons. In retrospect, reading a whole bunch of spoilers and waiting half a year to finish the story wasn't the best idea. Still teared up at a few parts.

I can see why people don't like the ending. The stakes and power levels grow almost exponentially from the previous four books. Velvet and Calamity lampshade how ridiculously dark and violent Hoofington is compared to their own story. I did like the big final battle and the way it was told via different character vigniettes. Maybe it helps that I don't watch a lot of anime, so I didn't catch any of the references. BJ being preggers and body/soul swapping a bunch of times was excessive.

But no, the real thing tainting PH's ending is what's been there all along - the setting unjustly making Blackjack suffer, other ponies blaming her for everything that goes wrong, and her internalizing this guilt and failure and losing her shit until just enough sex or therapy is administered to get her going again. Book 5 turns up the angst to an unreasonable degree. And now it's not just BJ; every other character starts angsting over their failures too. No character progression is allowed. Blackjack breaking down in the penultimate chapter over all those who have died only to get forgiven by fucking PSALM is absolutely unforgiveable. The final battle with the Eater of Souls is pointlessly interrupted by several dreams just so BJ can experience more failure. And of course her ultimate fate in the epilogue is needlessly sad and spiteful.

This is perhaps the most frustrating story I've ever read. Because there are scenes in every chapter that are fun, or poignant, or joyous. But they are entertwined with a red thread of cruelty and suffering that inevitably becomes grating. I definitely don't agree with those who say you should 'stop reading' at a particular chapter. If I stopped at 33 I'd have missed the fun of the Hightower arc, or the satisfaction of the Society chapters. I guess the only choice with Project Horizons is to avoid it entirely, or read the whole thing and suffer. Which is fitting, in a way.

I think Project Horizons is the closest piece of media I've ever seen to the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic. It's maximalist and long and has a ton of fighting and explosions, and dramatic moments. R63!Littlepip would mean he's gay, meaning he's not interested in Velvet, meaning he doesn't leave the stable to chase a girl with a deathwish and probably ends up the same as the rest of Stable 2.

But IF he does go out for whatever reason, he'd be desperate for Calamity. And that alone improves the story by a lot

Now that's a boring conclusion, Calamity is objectively alright (no homo). But is dudePip thirsty enough to try to fix Red Eye?

but of a Wastelander magazine cover featuring a mutie.
But.
I'm having trouble coming up with a pose and an outfit. What would be fitting for an alicorn? And perhaps more importantly, what color should she be? Go ahead and suggest whatever you'd like to see. She can pose with an item, but should be alone and also it has to be sfw enough to be posted here.

If you're wondering, it'll be a few months, maybe a year or so, after the day of sunshine and rainbows so post Unity as they're doing their best to fit into society, each one in the way she thinks best. The headline will be something about looking for love. I'll see if I can come up with a play of words.
>>

Holy based.

>What would be fitting for an alicorn?
I've always been a great fan of Lacunae and her heavy weapons minigun style. So a purple mutiecorn posing with a minigun and wearing a lot of extra ammo on belts (or straps) would be my vote.

I would like Littlepip more if she was more of a support role in combat and less of an OP murdermare. Let Calamity and Steelhooves handle the heavy fighting so she can focus on hacking, lockpicking and telekinesis.
>>
>>43307339
I remember someone being annoyed by her first confrontation with the raiders and Monterey. He said she would've been killed right then and there because of her ineptitude and even wrote an alternative start of FoE where exactly that happened.

>>43307339
Scotch Tape in PH is pretty much this, it would've been cool to have Pip usually being incompetent in a fight, until she unlocks her absolutely overpowered telekinesis.
It's probably a left over from the "Fallout playthrough" aspect that was the first half of the book.

If she was just a pipbuck tech, she probably would've gone in that first gunfight like how >>43307481 is talking about.

One of the rarest possible encounters in the Wasteland: Queen Aurelia of the United Tribes.

This old (by Wasteland standards anyways) zebra looked positively loaded in every way and was the perfect target for a shoot n' grab. Not only was she clean, but the dress she wore was new – and that didn't mean newly looted but rather actually new, sewn from cloth woven within the last decade. She'd had a bath in the past few days and the scent of exotic perfume of some flower you couldn’t recognize filed your nostrils. Her saddlebags sat heavy on her back and you couldn't help but notice she had a little bit of a belly on her. All that, and she’d also bothered braiding both her overtly long mane and tail.

Everything pointed at her being both swimming in caps and not belonging out in the Wastes. How could someone like her still be alive out here?

Her lips curled into a friendly smile as you reached down for your weapon. Instead of reaching for hers that she had to have hidden in her bag, she raised a hoof to... wave at you.
>"Hello, friend! What brings you here today?"
Her words bore a mild accent and her voice was both deep and full of confidence.
The instinct that'd kept you alive this far in the Wastes kicked in. She saw you reach for your gun. Her reaction to it was all wrong. And she was that old.
No, there was definitely more to her than met the eye.

"Hello. That depends on who you are."
Her raised hoof zipped to cover her mouth as she let out a warm chuckle.
>"Why, aren't you a cheery one! I am Aurelia. Here to... scavenge and gather herbs. And you, my friend?"
>Her pretty purple eyes lost focus for half a second while she trailed off before continuing.
>You took half a step back, on instinct.
>Not a straight lie, but an omission; half truth.

You will:
[] Shoot her. Good loot.
[] Tell her you're not her friend and leave.
[] Tell the truth. You're searching for the Queen of Sun and Rain.

I'm very sleep deprived and this is a bad idea, but whatever, already wrote it. Now call it the garbage it is.

[x] Tell the truth. You're searching for the Queen of Sun and Rain.

“I’m on a quest to find the Queen of Sun and Rain who will bring sunshine and rainbows back to Equestria.”
>The zebra, Aurelia, drew a breath as her lips parted – but remained quiet.
>She studied you with her pretty purple eyes for a few seconds, her gaze zipping from hoof to mane and everything in between.
>”I cannot say I have heard of any queens of either sun or rain, friend. But, I do know of a queen who would very much like to see sunshine return to this Wasteland.”
>You froze in place as you stared at her.
>Could it be?
>...no, it couldn’t.
>Had to be just another raider boss who fancied herself something.
>They were the only kind one could find in Equestria.
>You shook your head and snorted.
“No thanks. I’ve seen enough ‘queens’ of looting and pillaging.”
>You were about to turn around to leave when you could’ve sworn you saw her eyes sparkle and heard a weird ‘ching’ sound.
>But, as you spent a split second thinking about it, you were certain it was just your imagination.
>”Why would I even bother mentioning a raider queen? They’re hardly worth the bullet they deserve.”
>She reached up to swipe a strand of mane off her face before taking a step towards you.
>”I’m talking about an entirely another kind of a queen.”
>Her walk was slow and she swayed her shapely hips more than she had to as she approached.
>A part of you wanted to turn around and get away, but…
>”The ruler of an entire nation: The United Tribes of Maregascar.”
>…she was in fantastic shape for her age and you hadn’t been with a mare for ages and her perfume mixing with her natural scent made your head spin.
“Can’t say I’ve ever heard of it.”
>Aurelia let out an adorable chuckle.
>”Few in Equestria have. It’s an island nation off the coast of Zenibar, all the way across North Luna Ocean.”
>She got just within your reach of you when she raised a hoof for one more step, before setting that hoof back down right where it was.

>You realized, now, that she was too close for you to shoot her now before she could use whatever zebra martial art with odd name she knew on you.
“Okay so what do you want out of me?”
>The zebra rolled her eyes.
>”Of course, friend. No free lunches in the Wasteland.”
>She stuck a hoof into her saddlebag and rummaged around for a little bit before pulling out a glass jar full of some kind of green stalks with seeds on them.
>They looked a little bit like green, tiny, very long cobs of corn.
>”These are plantain seeds. They have mild anti-rad and restorative properties. Could you gather enough to fill this jar for me, friend? I’ll go prepare lunch for us while you do.”
>The corners of her mouth curled into a hopeful smile.

>And once again heard – rather, imagined you heard – a weird ‘ching’ sound.
“You said it yourself. No free lunches in the Wasteland.”
>Sticking a hoof out towards her, you gave her a smug smile.
>Aurelia offered a deadpan stare in return before she rolled her eyes.
>”All right. You got me there, friend. Walked straight into that one.”
>She then let out a bright giggle.
>”You’ll have your caps, sellsword. But since I’m paying, you better be fast! I won’t wait with lunch and you won’t like it overcooked!”
>Setting the jar in your outstretched hoof, she flashed a smile and batted her eyelashes at you.
>You found yourself staring at her shapely, dress-covered behind rock back and forth as she headed towards a mostly intact house on a small hill a bit separate from the rest of the ruined village you were in.
>You told yourself to compliment her dress later for complementing both her eyes and her figure.

>Swiping sweat off your forehead, you flicked your forehoof to sprinkle the worst of it on the ground.
>Finding the knee high seed stalks in a sea of chest height grass was neither light nor easy.
>You set the rusty sickle you’d found in a shed on the ground next to you and reached into your saddlebag for a drink.
>Everything grew tall and strong, compared to most of the Wasteland, here in what used to be the backwoods of northeastern Equestria.
>Right now, you were probably further from the closest megaspell crater than you’d ever been since you got your quest from the village Elder and arrived in the Equestrian Wastes.
>And that meant little to no radiation.
>Which the plants liked well enough that even the permanent cloud cover didn’t prevent them from overgrowing everything.
>It also meant that whatever ponies once lived in the hamlet of a village very likely survived the war, only to die of starvation or infighting over what little food was left a bit later.
>Maybe a few of the smartest even survived the whole thing and like a quarter of all ponies now alive could trace their ancestry here.
>Who knew, who cared.
>You took a sip out of your water bottle, screwed the top back on, and stuck it back in your bag before picking up the sickle again.

>You were green all over and covered in insect bites and nettle stings as you pushed open the front door of the house on the small hill.
>Aurelia sat next to a bubbling pot in the middle of what was left of the living room.
>You cast her a dirty glance.
“You knew, didn’t you?”
>She looked up at the pot and at you, all innocent.
>”That the day is warm and what once grew on lawns is long since overgrown? Or course, my friend. That is why I’m paying you. No free lunches, remember?”
>She let go of the ladle she was stirring the pot with and stood up as you approached.
>”Now, let me see.”
“Just don’t make me do it again.”
>Shoving the now full jar into her hooves, you sniffed at the air as she inspected the contents.
>Whatever she was cooking smelled delicious.
>”These are great! Thank you, my friend!”
>You twitched as a hoof landed on your withers and you were pulled into a hug.
>”Mwah!”
>She was remarkably soft as she pressed into you to plant a kiss on your cheek.

>You took a step back as she pulled back, watching her stuff the jar in her pack and dig out a hoofful of caps.
>You could not make heads or tails of this mare.
>”Here. As promised.”
>She shoved the pile of caps at you.
>You counted 19 and made sure to store them securely in your purse, more than doubling its contents.
>”Now. Have a seat, friend. There are no free lunches but I believe you have worked plenty for this one.”
>Pulling a cup out of her bags, she scurried to the pot and ladled the cup full before offering it to you.
>”All yours, my friend. And feel free to have seconds. It is a stew of wild plants and berries, with a few herbs for flavor.”
>It was a green-ish slurry of boiled leaves, roots, and berries.
>While it did look delicious, your mind filled with all the warnings about zebra brews and their tendency to have undesired effects you’d heard during your travels.

Can we skip the food stuff and leave her? She may be cute and willing, but aren't we a seasoned wastelander who was willing to rob her? Shomething makes sounds, we intinctively feel like causing her harm will backfire. Maybe we should ask about it, or simply fuck off to do what we were meant to do.

[Four conflicting choices so I picked this time with a bit of a combination.]

>You stared at the stew for a second.
“Ehh… Sorry, but I think I’d best not. I’ve heard some things about zebra brews.”
>Aurelia cocked her head and stared at you while blinking for a few seconds.
>She then let out a warm giggle.
>”Does this look like an alchemy station, my friend?”
>Her lips curled into an amused smile as she nodded back at the simple pot on an open flame.
>Once again you thought you heard a faint ‘ching’ as it looked like something sparkled in her eyes.
>”No, my friend. The temperature is uncontrollable. I have no tools to keep the active ingredients separate. Nothing for precise measurements to ensure proper ratios. And most of all, no way to purify or even distill anything out of what I’ve gathered.”
>She shook her head.
>”No, my friend. This is food and nothing more.”
>You had to admit most of what she said sailed over your head, but while she hadn’t always told the whole truth, she also hadn’t flat out lied before.
>And food wasn’t free.
>Especially the kind you had with you that was lightweight, edible on the go, and wouldn’t go bad.
“...fine. Can’t really afford to say no anyways.”
>She beamed a smile as you snagged the cup and strutted over to sit on what was left of the couch.
>>
>>43317473

>The stew was far better than it looked.
>It had a tart taste to it, but the sweetness of berries cut it just enough to make it pleasant.
>You’d already gulped down half of your cup when Aurelia sat down next to you – closer than she had to, you noticed.
>Not quite close enough for her hip to to touch yours, but close enough you felt the warmth radiating from her and so the scents of her and her perfume filled your nostrils.
>She had a faint smile on her lips as she swiped a strand of mane off her face.
“So. You said you’re from across the ocean. What’s it like back home?”
>She sipped at her stew and chewed on it for a while before gulping it down as she stared up at the ceiling.
>”In the capital of the Tribes? Glorious.”
>Pausing for a while, a mellow smile spread onto her lips.
>”Would you believe some parts of it are already almost 150 years old? And there’s a sharp divide between the old town that predates planning and the rest of it? And all of it is clean and maintained?”
>There was a twinge of pride in her voice.
>”There’s shops of all kinds with carpenters, seamstresses, weavers, butchers, smiths – even shipwrights working their crafts. I have sound reason to believe it is the largest, most advanced city in the world. I wish you could see it, my friend!”
>She turned to face you, excitement clear as day on her face.
>”I could show you the harbor, and the farmlands around it, and the quiet worker’s homes, and even the palace. Would you believe how beautiful the courtyards are in the morning sun when the light shimmers off the dew on the flowers and leaves?”
>The excitement seeped into her voice as well as she made a sweeping gesture with her free hoof.
>Then she shook her head and her smile melted into a face of disguts.
>”I was hoping to find a similar beacon of hope and prosperity here, but no. Without sunlight, the ponies of this land cannot thrive. Civilization cannot survive without agriculture, and the crops of this land grow too slow and too weak without the sun. The farmers barely feed themselves.”
>Staring at the floor for a while in silence, she shook her head again before taking another sip.

Not sure if she outright stated to be a Queen, but she definitely implied it to us. And even if she were not a royal, she's clearly of higher society or noble standing, judging from her looks alone. I'd ask her what a pony (or zebra in this case) like her is doing all alone in a dangerous foreign country. Would someone like her not travel with an entourage at the very least?

[x] 2nd and last chance to pick a topic to talk over lunch or ask any questions.
-What is she doing all alone in here?

>You turned to study her.
>Fancy, embroidered dress. Perfume. Done-up mane. A hint of softness all around her, though she wasn’t out of shape by any means. Plus the crow’s feet round her eyes and the strands of gray in her mane.
>”Why, am I really that good looking?”
>A hint of red rose to her cheeks as she lifted a hoof to poke at her mane.
>”My daughters would be more up your alley, my friend. Though, Titania is already married and has the cutest little colt of her own.”
>...now that you thought about it like that, she was indeed rather comely.
>You shook your head.
“What are you doing here all on your own? You’re from the capital and know the insides of the palace. Shouldn’t you have an entourage to keep you safe?”
>Aurelia paused to stare at you with her mouth hanging open for a split second.
>Her lips curled into a wide smile.
>”It seems you have at least half a brain in that pretty head of yours, my friend.”
>She drew a deep breath and leaned back on the couch.
>”You are correct. I am none other than the Queen herself. Why I’m here is a more complex question, but the core of the answer is that I believe I have fulfilled my duty to my people and can finally have the excitement and adventure I’ve always desired.”
>Questions raced in your mind as you felt your lips part and jaw drop open.
>”As for what I’m doing? The answer is simple. I’m here to establish diplomatic relations with the factions of the Equestrian Wasteland. Chiefly, the Grand Pegasus Enclave and also the Steel Rangers. The latter should prove easy as they have a chapter nearby in the city of Vanhoover.”
>She paused for a while to have another gulp of stew.
>”The Enclave, though? I am not sure where to begin. But, as for your other concern. I am not alone, my friend. My companion should return shortly before nightfall. She is fetching something necessary from a nearby village of my kind.”
“Why aren’t you with her?”
>Aurelia let out a short giggle.
>”She is of a quite rare kind. Much like you, my friend. You will understand when she returns.”
>The couch bobbed as she shifted her weight around to face you.
>”But. That does bring me to the reason I decided to meet you, my friend. I was hoping you would help me survive these lands. You bring with you many of the virtues lost to the ponies of this land and you are familiar enough with it to be of great help. What say you, my friend? Will you travel with me?”
>You kept staring at her with your mouth hanging open.

[] Yes
[] No

Was busy yesterday.

>>

I'd say go for it. It certainly is a task that could do some good. The Steel Ranger part, at least. The Enclave is a pretty lost cause.
But the companion should be treated with care for now since she doesn't know annything about this encounter yet. She could think that the Queen is in danger and might act accordingly.
>>
>>43320438
Wasteland factions, also known as the spectrum of generic sci-fi villainy. At least she doesn't want to befriend the Goddess yet.
Anyway, it's fun, but our original task comes first. We may only tag along as long as there are no clear threads to follow, and we will ditch Aurelia with no prior notice the moment we learn our Queen of Sun and Rain can be found elsewhere. If this is acceptable, she got herself a deal.

[x] Yes

>You got the hunch that there was far more at play than simply agreeing to travel with her.
>But, if she really was who she claimed to be – and everything did point at her being just that – then she could be of enormous help in your search with her knowledge and connections.
“I’ll do it. But my search for the Queen of Sun and Rain comes first. I’ll be off to follow any clues we find.”
>The corners of Aurelia’s mouth curled into a wide smile as she set down her cup.
>”You will?”
>You nodded.
>”Yes!”
>Giddy clip-clops filled the room as she clapped and let out a bright giggle.
>”You made an excellent choice, my friend! I will make it worth your while. Speaking of!”
>She pointed towards the rest of the village.
>”I found something in there earlier I didn’t dare open alone: a sealed basement. We’ll go take a look at it once we’re done eating. But please have seconds, my friend!”

>Your hooves thudded and crunched on dry rotted wood as Aurelia led you into a collapsed house.
>”There. Down those stairs.”
>She pointed at a pile of wooden beams covering a hatch.
>She’d managed to clear just enough space to open it and squeeze into the darkness below.
>”I’ll get in first and hold a light for you.”
>With the dress back at ‘base’ on the house up on a hill, she had quite a different look to her as she dropped her saddlebags and dug out a lamp.
>Not that you minded as she stuck her front half through and then wiggled and squirmed to get her rear to fit through the hole between the beams.
>Not bad, not bad at all.
>>
>>43321846

>After a few grunts and groans, she was in and flicked the lamp on.
>”Right there. Do you know how to open that?”
>At the end of a short tunnel was a metal door that may once have been white, but the paint had long since flaked off as the door had rusted.
“Can you get the light a bit closer? I can’t see what kind of a lock it has. Electronic or conventional?”
>”It’s a normal lock.”
>She did just as you asked and took a step closer to shine the light on the handle and lock.
>It was indeed just a keyhole.
“Not really my area of expertise. Cheap electronic ones, on the other hoof? Could open those in my sleep.”
>The key to those was that you could hotwire the servo motor controlling the latch and force it open.
>As long as you had a spark battery, a way to open the lock, and some wire, that is.
>Of course it didn’t work with the actual decent locks that were far more rare and quite a bit more expensive.
“I can give it a shot anyways. Looks cheap and easy to pick, but no promises. Or we can look for a key somewhere in this mess. Or, for another way in. I think that’s an emergency bunker. A very cheap one, but one nevertheless, so it should have air vents somewhere.”

[x] Search for a key. (Perception check: pass)

>You stared at each other for a second, her arching a brow and drawing breath, only to hold it in.
“Just hold there for a moment. I’ll go search for a key. There should be one in here somewhere.”
>Looking up from the tunnel, you took a moment to study what was left of the house.
>”I suppose it is not so bad down here, my friend.”
>You froze for a second, then glanced back down at her.
>And let out a chuckle at her pout and puffed-up cheeks.
“Sorry! I promise I’ll be quick.”

>You scanned the ruin around you as you stepped over what was once a kitchen table.
>Where would a pre-war pony hide a key to his emergency shel-
>A ‘ching’ so faint you were sure it was just your imagination played in your ears.
>There.
>Where the upstairs bedroom had collapsed into the living room, in the intact but on its side dresser next to remains of a double bed.
>With some careful steps over and on splintered, rotten wood of a collapsed wall that crunched under your hooves, you made your way to it.
>A quick tug at one of the knobs… left you holding the knob with the drawer still closed.
>The wood was so thoroughly eaten by dry rot and swollen by moisture it had become one solid block.
>After a few taps, you shrugged, turned around, and reared for a buck.

>”Is everything okay, friend?”
>The crunch of your hooves punching holes in the drawer was rather satisfying, but falling over as they got stuck in it was not.
“I’m fine. Just-”
>You yanked one hoof free with a hollow crunch.
>The hoof that was still stuck hit something small and metallic.
“-might have got a bit stuck but this wood is so rotten I can just tear it apart. And also I found the key.”

“See, here it is!”
>You presented the large and mostly rust free key to her.
>She beamed a smile at you as she looked up from the tunnel.
>”Well done, my friend! Now come on! I’m excited to find out what’s in there!”
>She did a cute little twirl as you tossed the key to her before sticking your upper half through the same hole she got stuck in.
>You had an easier time getting through, though even your hips had a bit of a squeeze to get in.
>As you rolled onto your hooves and dusted yourself off, she’d already snatched the key and dashed to the door.
>The key fit and the lock clicked open as she turned it.
>But, she then stopped and looked back at you without pulling the door open.
>”Do you want the honors, my friend?”
