Those are all worse, both significantly harder to animate and significantly harder to read at a glance. You would struggle to make accurate merch of them and fans would struggle to draw them. In every sense they are a bad choice.

>>43287210It's inspired by the G4 remake plans where they were going to make Applejack into a badass inner city chica and flip a bunch of characters' traits around because that was the only way they could think to be novel with the idea.
>>43287017It's shit. There's beauty in simplicity. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like hasbro understands that. Faust's take on mlp is iconic, because it captures the essence of the characters with as few lines as possible. This encourages the viewer to take note of the minor details that make each character special. Although I'm sure you've hear this a million times already.

So many fan concepts completely miss this aspect even though it was one of the core reasons the show was so successful! Shitscribbles like this one from Weaver are instantly recognizable despite only kinda-sorta resembling the characters, most character designs can't do that!

>>43288006i get what you’re saying and obviously i can’t speak for lauren herself, but i think when you analyze a character you should be taking in the version of them that was actually put forward in the finished work. “fluttershy without wings” isnt some secret True Version of the character that they were hiding, it was a stepping stone along the path to the real fluttershy. her concept designs should only support my point. lauren initially conceptualized her as one race and eventually decided it’d be more interesting for her to be a pegasus who doesn’t like to fly as much. there were probably several iterations for each of the mane six, some of which we might never see.so yeah, for the final, realized fluttershy, that’s almost definitely “the point.”

Earth pony fluttershy is super lame, pegasus fluttershy is good, unicorn fluttershy is great. It adds a 'forest fae' angle to the character that doesn't work on pegasus fluttershy. Having the childhood friends aspect with RD be removed would be too big of a loss, though, but at the same time, I'd always thought that it was boring and cliche to have Fluttershy be bullied as a child. It would have been more interesting to have her retreat into nature and her skittish/avoidant personality as a more natural inclination. Being ostracized and then withdrawing is less interesting than withdrawing and then being ostracized. Although Fluttershy in the show participates in town events regularly despite being characterized as 'shy' and living in a cabin somewhat removed from the town, which came off to me as somewhat awkward writing.
