What the hell is going on with the technology and development of Equestria? Villages and towns appear to have 12th-14th century architecture and rural zoning, yet cities like Manehattan have skyscrapers and urban layouts like the early 20th. There aren't any cars, computers, TV or radio, yet they have rail, electricity, helicopters and devices like X-ray machines, arcade cabinets and digital music equipment.It appears Equestria has a very strange mishmash of developed stuff all the way from renaissance to as late as the 1950s, most snugly fitting into the early-industrial era of 1870s-1920s.Why don't they just develop cars already? Are they stupid?
They tried out cars a few hundred years back and realized immediately that the longterm effects of automobile adoption were detrimental to society so they just didn't do it. If only we were so smart!

Remember the Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000? It wasn't even a scam, it was a legitimate technological marvel that was self-propelled, did the job well, and only broke down because Flim and Flam overloaded it. They could have had steam automobiles if they wanted to, but 'no cars' was probably a rule with an exception made for 'rare fantastical inventions' or 'occaisional heavy machinery' like the timberpunk tracked crane in the OP. Rules like that are meta, they shape the feel of the world but don't necessarily reflect the capabilities of its inhabitants. It's up to (you) to come up with reasons why they choose to limit certain tech.I mean, these ponies pack a lot of horsepower and they can just fly or walk while pulling what they need with them. That's already reason enough in the case of motor vehicles. Cars might legitimately be less convenient than just hooking your wagon up to a couple pegasi, and the trains can cover bulk transport over long distances for earthbound passengers and their luggage etc.

I think because of magic, technology is less prevalent since magic can do most of what it can do. So it isnt really researched or used much and is more rare. Thats why in g5 there is more tech since magic was gone giving the need for technology to advance and be more common
