Nobody took anything seriously, it was just a bunch of random silly shit animated with flash and photoshop and old footage of hanna barbara shows. The rest was anime and adult cartoons that got canceled by other networks. It was TV for the sort of person who watches cartoons after midnight. Once it became popular with college hipsters they started running all that kind of "haha le random" Tom Goes to the Mayor type stuff, then they got into live shows and it was all downhill from there. I'm honestly amazed it's still on.

I used to watch some of Adult Swim when it was new. An online friend of mine would sometimes send me episodes back then (the shows never aired where I live) to check out. ATHF, Sealab 2021 (or something like that), Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law were all pretty okay. The only thing that was annoying was how many times they made "lol gays" jokes at the time. I'm not saying that in some "how dare they" way, but the jokes were just never funny (on the same level as "dude weed lol" jokes).
