I wonder what windlight Balti used back then. It had way lighter colors and looked brighter on daytime compared to what we've been using for a while now. The windlight we now have is kinda weird in the way that even daytime seems kinda dark meanwhile the other one from 2024 was way more cartoonish bright/less dark shadowy and worked better with popens imo

The funniest part was that originally he came for the cringe and making a Youtube troll video but started to genuinely enjoy the experience.
He sometimes still visits for a couple minutes (usually not longer because perpetual tourist status I guess) like one or two times a year. He also kept his word of not promoting Balti on Youtube and so the big tourist flood didn't happen. Chill dude and I kinda like him.

This is due to a combination of things but you can start by going into your graphics preferences and switching your tonemapper from ACES to Khronos Neutral and then fuck with the slider until the contrast level is to your liking. Then after that you'll want to increase Reflection Probe Ambiance to 3 (or whatever looks good to you) so that it has more of an impact and everything is made a bit more vivid.
It won't look the same as before because of improvements to lighting and shaders that can't be reverted, thankfully.

While that might help, the windlight that is used now is drastically different to the one that was used before. It's not just the introduction of PBR that has made things duller, it has been made duller intentionally. I have one of the older windlight setups and the daylight is drastically different. The 1.6.1 Windlight I have is colourful and bright, even the night is relatively bright with it being more purple. The 2.5.1 windlight that I have which is relatively more recent, I'm not 100% sure if it's the one that's applied right now, that one is quite dull.

It's not just hindsight being more colourful.

Even back then there were days when a windlight was chosen that looked really close to what we have on now. It was mostly two that were chosen. The one with the very light shadowing was kinda rarely chosen I guess because it wasn't that liked by the weather jannies. You could often see this after events that needed perma-night. Then someone noticed the night was stuck and switched to daylight cycle windlight in those cases often the light one. THEN someone noticed it was the "wrong" windlight and switched to the one that looked kinda like the one we use regularly now.

Oh I just realized.
I guess the light-shadow windlight usually doesn't get used because the nights are unnaturally bright, almost daylight bright with no dark spots where there are no lamps.
So while the days may look nicer with brighter colors and friendlier, the nights are kinda fucked up because they don't get darker than at daytime so the lamps have visually no effect which sucks.

Why the fuck do all y'all niggas keep referring to lighting settings as "a windlight" when Second Life hasn't used the Windlight system since before /opg/, and even if it did, it would be called "lighting settings" not "a windlight". It's like me referring to this post I am making now as "a 4Chan"
