Big Mac Goes to College is already one of the sloggiest episodes, probably not helped by the relative lack of humor and having the heaviest tone in the series, so that probably colors our perceptions of their plot thread a lot. It's a shame because the way they mirror the original Soarin/Big Mac/Braeburn dynamic is pretty interesting and has a lot of potential.

A great example is the silksong scene from Trixie visits Twilight's Parents, where you have this really impactful scene of quiet horror as mari watches starlight slaughter her in effigy over and over. The way the burning played out, it might as well have not even been starlight doing it. The outcome would have been exactly the same as if she had actually fallen asleep on a candle.

When the knight wants to bone the pumpkin, we know this because he basically says it is so, and then he pursues that. We do not get background information about how and why he came to desire the pumpkin. We do not have an understanding of what about the knight leads him to be a pedo. While we get slightly more information on the motivations of dandy and sprout, that's spread out over the whole series, and isn't particularly detailed and just sort of gestures at the idea of social forces with the mild implication that everything comes back to dandy's ultimate cultural power in gardenview. With the repeated direct mentions of christianity, I can also argue that sprout is intended to be a representative of the adversary, meaning the oppositional force which god tolerates and perhaps somehow needs. Then they have an argument. The only faster narrative is "condition leads to result", such as "I dropped my ice cream, so it hit the ground." This narrative is "A small rock and a big rock rolled at eachother, and the smaller rock bounced away.">compare to mlpFirst off, you don't fucking know what the narrative of this episode was. I only sort of know because I went back and checked and there's enough repetition. Like a good story, you are more likely to "feel" the point than actually get it. The first action in the story isn't dumping facts, it's a song, with an anime music video, which is well known for being representative and abstract in a way which provides a general feeling to the audience and secretly foreshadows everything that is about to happen without actually telling the audience anything. This is the priority. The second scene doesn't just provide the setup for the episode, but places that setup in a larger context which is itself engaging. In mlp, things COME FROM places. The fourth scene is us seeing where mari comes from. The fifth is, finally, seeing what mari is.The reason why every single thing takes longer in mlp, is that the events all come from some place. Every one of them gets a "why". The salt spear was formed while fractured was indirectly helping celestia gas all the monsters to death. The spear IS the destruction of all those different from you, and for fractured the spear exists only if you would give up on peace and give up on making yourself happy any other way. As such, twilight, who holds all the positivity in the universe at this point, can simply walk out of the gassed gym and then walk out of the salt sacrifice dimension. Also, the direct explanation for who can leave the salt dimension is that those who hold on to good sonic underground media instead of conforming to the whims of new media decided for them by others may be free. Those who choose positivity also avert this crisis caused by negativity. So flawless makes peace with fractured, marie again makes peace with starlight and then intentionally directs starlight to help her with the process of healing her physically, and by implication mentally, and fractured receives direct attention and acceptance and a little concert just for her ending in the words "It's time to be free. when I was complaining about the abruptness of Prof. Kirin's redemption arc beginning in Quarantine, I had said he had two appearances in between Big Mac Goes to College and Quarantine. This is actually an error; he has a small appearance in Alicorn of Death where he's among the first and only characters to directly acknowledge the resurrection of Care Package's Dad. In addition to correcting an earlier oversight, this has the added bonus of further fueling my mental illness regarding my favorite ship.
