When they made Twilight an Alicorn at the end of season 3 I think they had no idea, that they would make the show for 6 more seasons. And in my opinion making her an Alicorn that soon did end up hurting the show.So with the benefit of hindsight that the show has 9 seasons when should have Twilight been made an Alicorn? In my opinion very earliest should have been end of season 5 or 6 potentially even later. But what do you think?

It probably wasn't in the budget to make her do cool wizard shit though. I don't really think twilight having flight was ever that important except for some rainbow dash episodes maybe when it's a bit more convenient for her to go to cloudsdale or in testing 1 2 3 where her flying allows her to talk with dash 1 on 1. She could still just use magic for those cases but I think it could get awkward and make Pegasuses feel less special if unicorns can just do the same thing

Sure, making Twilight an alicorn out of the blue was probably ill-advised, but the real killer is that they tried to play her off as totally normal for the rest of the seasons. That was until season 9, when there was a hard right turn into her ruling all of Equestria. Turned into an alicorn to undermine the status of the princesses but Twilight ends up looking the way she does (still basically a normal pony with wings/horn instead of big alicorn like the others) because Discord doesn't have the power to fully turn a pony into basically a god. Then they kill discord forever so he doesn't do it to anyone else.

All she does is fuck around Ponyville and learn a random friendship lesson of the day. I wish she had more direction by having more focus on her education or ambitions or dreams, something, anything to provide some actual depth to her character but that would detract from her self-insert role.

All of a sudden Twilight is at position she was when she learned about the prophecy and NMM, which we actually know very little of. What was she studying there? She had huge home, apparently one of the perks of being local solar deity's pupil. Was her studies finished, or did she meant to continue on something? All of that dropped when she moved to Ponyville. A gentle crisis of "what's next" would had been very interesting for character building.
