i wasn't planning on posting this here but i figured i might as well since the resident art anon was the one who talked me into going through with making this. I guess it's a kind of thank you for that prof. kirin/package father art (I might have colored it and might possibly be currently using it as my desktop background).

i was trying to go for a nick cave/bauhaus kind of trad goth thing to represent the generation gap between care package's association with 2000's post punk revival and his father but I feel like a bit more marilyn manson and nin slipped in then i intended. I ended up stalling out pretty hard on coming up with a bridge, though, so this is probably about as far as i'll end up getting on this. there are still some vocals i would like to re-record/double track, so there still might be just a little bit of water left at the bottom of the well. as jank as this all is, I'm kind of proud of how the guitars came out considering I had to synthesize those practically from scratch.

The bells are clone of the DX7 Tubular bells, coincidentally the same preset as the taco bell bell.(I shoulda thrown in a lone E3 or whatever note it is in reference to the subject of the song first appearing on taco tuesday) and the pianos are probably some clone of either a DX7 or Wavestation preset. They're both pretty common workstations, so it's unsurprising that they'd sound familiar. my favorite albums, engineering wise, are PJ Harvey's Rid of Me and Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar. Now, I don't really currently have the means to do proper live tracking (I recording the vocals on my onboard laptop mic) so I can't get the organic room sounds that make Rid of Me's mix so compelling, not to mention my over-compressing on the master being antithesis to the dynamic range that defines Rid of Me's (especially it's opening track) sound. I decided to lean towards the harsh, saturation laden sound of ACSS. granted, I'm doing all this in shit-tier freeware software, so I'm very limited in my toolset.

The whole tubular bells+piano kind of palette was lifted from Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds' 1994 album Let Love In, with a little bit of Your Funeral My Trial slotted in, the latter of which was produced and mixed by my hero, Flood (who also did NIN's Downward Spiral, the source of a lot of my mid/side and phase techniques, and most of PJ Harvey's records post-Rid of Me. Highly recommend her fourth album, Is This Desire? there's an aching to that one). in hindsight, there's probably a little bit of Tom Waits/Marc Ribot in how the main riff has a slight latin tinge to it but that wasn't really intentional going in. The tom-focused drum arrangement is mostly coming from from Bauhaus's Nerves and The Cure's Hanging Garden (unrelated, but Disintegration is the best album of all time). If I could, I woulda had chorus-y guitars doing the main riff instead of the pianos/bells to really lean into that Cure sound but you know how it is. The Chorus riff with the syncopation and weird octave jumps is pretty heavily influenced by NIN's The Only Time, although that kind of rhythmic phrasing shows up a lot throughout Reznor's 90's output, thinking that one bass synth in the chorus of Last.

Lyrically, I didn't really have a lot to work with since Dadckage is kind of a black box at this point. He's one of the characters we have the least internality regarding. I tried to lean into his guilt over not being part of his son's life since that's one of the main things we have confirmed but I feel like I might have gone a little overboard with the whole self-loathing aspect. I also tried to lean into the dramatic irony of Care Package's father not knowing that Care Package was the one who killed him and the like. Also also, I've revised the lyrics since having recorded the vocals which is one of the reasons why I need to re-record them.

Been ages since I listened to Marilyn Manson. I didn't know PJ Harvey's, holy shit that's a really good vocal range and control. "Rid of Me" is fantastic, the studio album version doesn't do it justice.
In terms of alternative rock or whatever other arbitrary musical genre ya want to call it. I think I've gone more towards prog or experimental metal. I'm not that drawn to post-punk (or punk in general), but limitations can lead to some pretty creative projects so Im always open to give it a shot.

It's a kinda difficult to be specific about a character with so little backstory, I agree. But honestly I think that's for the better. The ambiguity could also help the song not seem so tied to its roots so it could reach far beyond this small niche. I keep thinking about the Soarin and Braeburn song that PrinceWhatever did for their movie (If you remove Braeburn's monologue and replace hoof with hands a couple times ya got another song that could be about anyone else you can imagine!). Even so, it is quite admirable to have a commitment to accurately portray a character/situation. True to be told I had that same issue while writing that fuckass Flawrinos comic almost year ago. At that time, there wasn't much content of Arinos that I could use as a reference to write him with confidence without feeling like he was out of character. it's definitely a little more universal than the other song I did. that one was much more directly referential. Listening to it again for the first time in a few months and damn, the mix is abysmal, FAR too bright.. a lot of the lines were either pretty much verbatim or a nod to a specific scene. it was a comparison/contrast thing with the first verse being about Applepackage and the 2nd being about Glimmer and Mari. I should go back and clean that up, it's more or less completed otherwise.

Doing something about Arinos could be fun. something in a waltz feel with a LOT of chromaticism. A lot of the themes surrounding him already overlap with stuff I already write, too, so It'd be pretty smooth, I feel.

Has anyone noticed any other instance of 3D use other than this whole sequence?
The battle sequence of Shattered Harmony might be one of the best and more complex ones Tamers has ever done. It's a simple trick and it's barely noticeable because of how fast the camera angle changes. The background itself is quite simple in shapes so I wonder if Tamers actually knows how to use Blender. And if he does, why hasn't he used it more other than this particular scene.
