Looking at Dragon Quest and episodes meant to continue it again, the issue isn't the portrayal of dragons, not at first anyways.It was the fact that they decided to make Garble try to murder baby Phoenixes and even Spike himself.Like if you take those "time to murder your ass Spike" and "let's smash the eggs on the ground" moments away, possibly recontextualizing the phoenix egg moment as getting some luxurious food item where he welcomes Spike to devour his rewards, his whole character arc flows a bit better and the whole "big misunderstood guy who's also a big brother figure" thing established in his final appearance makes more sense, since we do see the whole "teasing big brother figure" feel in Dragon Quest.Maybe those episodes inbetween could be recontextualized to be a mix of being angered or begrudged at Spike for rejecting his frathood and jealousy for having friends who like him as he is? The "revenge against those ponies" line in Gauntlet of Fire would still make sense.
