Gonna share a brief outsider experience. I am not a brony; these days, I exclusively identify as a furry and am not even necessarily with my own kind there, as the furry fandom has undergone a lot of astroturfing and watering-down over the years, but Friendship Is Magic was a big deal for me and helped get me through some tough times.>Be me, 2011>Rural New Englander; never been to a convention in my life>Hanging out with friend E, who I’ve known for 5 years>E tells me about this new thing he’s getting into>Tells me he’s a “brony”>Ask what that is>A MALE FAN of My Little Pony>I, naturally, being an 11-year-old boy who is into things like Bionicle, Sonic and Calvin & Hobbes, assume this is going to be the gayest thing imaginable and I go “E, dafuq you talkin’ about”>E assures me that it’s awesome>We go home>He opens YouTube on our old AIO Compaq running Windows XP and shows me Rarity Whining>Don’t get it the way he does, but it’s actually kinda funny>This is nothing like the ugly 80s pony cartoons that I never cared about>End up rewatching it later>End up watching the show>I actually love this now>Watch S2 finale when it airs and think it’s like the coolest shit I’ve ever seen on television>Keep up with the show on and off until I hear Faust left and then I stop>By that point, I have a hit fanfic under my belt and have probably written more about ponies than most people who worked on the showNot much else to say. I’m no longer in contact with most ponyfags I hung out around in my teens, and my future projects have nothing to do with it, but I am optimistic about the series’ future and I will be checking out G6.
