Wow, okay. That is proooobably one of the best analysis videos on MLP and brings everything straight to the point.
There is often times where you just forget that they are actual horses and not just fuckable aliens and everytime the show reminds you that they are, it is always sweet and cute. The horey nuzzling (like the one he showed between Rary and Swibbles, and also between Celestia and Twilight in episode 2) is something that should have happened way more than the simple human hugging that ended up dominating. Rearing, hopping, snorting, pawing at the ground, flehmen haha - stuff like that should have also been way more standard to express their body language. But they just became fucking lazy in this regard. Actually, they probably thought it was more creative in a fucked up sense. Like, wow, wing hands? That is really creative and funny, is it not? A lot in that video that he showed is something that I would pick up negatively on if not explicitly pointed out. That's what I mean when I said you sometimes forget they are not just fuckable aliens. Except bipedalism. That is just completely icky and distracting.
I feel like in G5 they then had an effort to make their movement a bit more horsey again? I wouldn't say it ever got close to Season 1's horsiness, but there was SOMETHING again. Bipedalism for example, is a very rare sight in G5. Ear movements, which horses are known for, were just completely not a thing in G4, but in ANG and MYM, they were. Like twitching their ears when they notice a sound. Bending their ears down when they are sad. Or tucking their ears behind when they are irritated. Then, while I think loafing is pretty rare in G5, they at least don't fucking stretch their legs while sitting like late-FIM often did.
Or sometimes, when they want to emphasise something or want to get another ponies' attention, they do a little hop forwards with their front hooves and that's kinda neat. Oh, and yeah, in the Winter special, there are just ponies that wear HORSE BLANKETS. Fucking finally. HOW HAVE THEY NOT DONE THIS BEFORE??
So with this trajectory, G& will be the most horsepilled generation in history. I believe it.

S1 is cute but the horsey stuff is a bit overstated and backfired when things like saddles are human inventions which showed how the writers weren't thinking at all about how the world would form around ponies.

Agreed, the S1 horseness is very overstated and the later season non-horseness is also overstated. Example mirroring yours, Pinkie Pie in a later season not holding her kite with her hands. Really this video essay was:
>The animation was worse in later seasons actually
>Look inside
>Criticizes the direction and world building consistency elements, doesn't talk about the animation at all
>Cherry picking the worst episodes from last seasons everyone hates when they phoned it in the hardest, that are very low rated episodes/seasons no one praises
>Doesn't ever use an example of what people actually mean when they say the animation was better, just tilting at windmills/making strawmen

Also just being objectively wrong because Hearths Warming is very clearly NOT just Christmas, with very clear fantasy setting and history appropriate reasons why the ponies have and engage in the holiday that adds to the rich world building of setting. Yes, it was made to be a Christmas analog, but so are many of the traditions and cultural aspects of the setting, even in S1-S2. Just saying easily verifiable wrong things anyone should know if they had actually watched the show.

What people mean when they say the animation was better is that there were fewer errors/weird frames. I love going off model, but there's going off model in a bad way and in S1-S2 it was more prolific than in later seasons. S3-S6 were particularly good about this, and things started to slip more depending on who was working on the episode as time went on into S7-S9. This isn't limited to old hats either. I just got a friend into the show. She's only on S1E6. He's CONSTANTLY sending me frames that are fucked up and wild to him(he's having a good time anyways).

This isn't even to say the complaints in the video are invalid. They SHOULD be more horsey, yes. They were less horsey. But Fausters really have rose tinted goggles for the early days and just forget things like completely retconning basically an entire episode(E4) where Applejack was the best at everything and they realized they fucked up by Fall Weather Friends. In no fucking universe should Pinkie Pie be asking Applejack to take the lead on baking sweets SHE LIVES AND WORKS AT THE SUGARCUBE CORNER!

>This isn't limited to old hats either.

Not just limited to my new viewer friend either(although here's an example of all the tender love and care the video essay would lead you to believe they "really thought through" about how a pony would do things in mommy Faust's golden quality control era that he sent me from S1). Overseas people that are just getting into the fandom, especially the Asians, really praise the expressiveness of the faces in the later seasons on their first watch through.

I know there's a lot of autism in this community, but is it really that hard to have holistic objective view of the good and bad parts of the show in different eras and not just getting mad on your own in your head?
>>
>>43404157
If this shot were in S5 or something the video essayist would say, "Why is the pitcher shaped like it's built for hands, for a human? Ponies obviously don't have hands, why isn't it in a bottle?" They just ignore what they want to ignore and the lack of objectivity kills the criticism.

No, Hasbro sucks, Faust just wasn't perfect.
2/3 episodes in S1 were stone cold classics and the others were stinkers. S2 was an improvement, but did bad stuff like fucking up dragons. S3 was weird and short, but had it's moments, MMC was handled very poorly and very abrupt. S4-S6 was the golden era(also had plenty of it's bad parts). S7 was melatonin and S8-S9 were pozzed, but had some good parts(mostly the parts that ignored the school/New 6). Cozy Glow was a good villain in a bad season. Josh Haber should be stoned.

And like I said earlier, ponies should be more pony, but let's not pretend this was exclusively a later season problem.

You can just have a normal one and accept that things have good and bad parts without making up shit to get upset about. There's already plenty of shit to get upset about, be upset about something real and don't mythologize things being what they weren't to upset about. Ziggas will just get bored and invent/forget things because the show's been over for years. That's dumb. Post mares.

Season 1 was clunky and didn't even know what it wanted to be for most of it's run. It was literally retconning stuff within the same season, as already discussed. Twilight wasn't even a character for the whole season. It had good episodes, but it wasn't a full package experience.

In Applebuck Season, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash both explicitly refer to Applejack separately as the best baker/best athlete in Ponyville, and Fluttershy defers to her on wrangling rabbits. They would never do this later, even in S1-S2, very out of character(unless Pinkie Pie were being hyperbolic, but she literally acts like she's never baked before and takes Applejack's whack directions despite working in Sugarcube Corner). She's portrayed as the girl who can do it all, and do it the best, and the moral of the story is even the best need help sometimes. Most of the reasons for Boast Busters and Fall Weather Friends was to tone down the extreme marry sue they made her.
>>

I think it was to show that there are differences between traditional apple based pastries that Applejack can make and classic/regular pies and cakes that Pinkie Pie can make.

I sort of agree but I also think "my idea as a critic is better than your idea as a creator" is inherently a weak position to come from. The decisions they made (up til maybe S8 but definitely S9 where shit went off the rails completely) to reduce the fantasy worldbuilding lore and increase the anthropomorphism were intentional for the sake of engagement with the intended audience, the results of which included more expressiveness, more relatability and more accessibility. It wasn't just because they're stupid and uncreative, the team was self-evidently capable of what you wanted, it just wasn't the direction the property was taken in and "but I wanted it" isn't an argument.
Nuking the library was actively malicious though

>unless Pinkie Pie were being hyperbolic, but she literally acts like she's never baked before and takes Applejack's whack directions despite working in Sugarcube Corner
it was the other way around. Pinkie was telling the directions to AJ and AJ was mishearing them because she was sleep deprived
https://youtu.be/C32JtfrkBto?t=829
Furthermore, Pinkie mentioned that this was her first time running sugarcube by herself, hence why she wanted AJ's help
https://youtu.be/C32JtfrkBto?t=313
I get the sense that all the ponies value AJ in this episode not because she's the best, but because she's dependable and always available to lend a hand and get the job done. The central conflict of the episode reinforces this--it's not that AJ can't fulfill her obligations due to lack of skill, but because she's overextending herself and trying to get too many jobs done. You're probably right that Pinkie was a bit hyperbolic in saying that AJ was the best baker ever, but no other pony says that she's the best, just that she is using her skills to lend them a hoof
>>
>>43405124
correction: dash does refer to AJ as "ponyville's greatest athlete" later in the episode so it's a bit of a mixed bag it seems. All of ponyville's residents projecting such high expectations onto AJ may be the reason why she felt so condescended by Big Mac at the start of the episode
>>
>>43405132
last note: dash's comment about AJ being the best might have two explanations
1: dash doesn't consider herself as a ponyville athlete since she's a cloudsdale native; with dash out of consideration in this way, the title of most athletic in ponyville would fall to AJ
2:"best athlete" might not mean most capable in this case, but most dedicated/most reliable; after all, you can't be considered an athlete if you never show up, and AJ can always be counted on to show up since she's so dependable
but these explanations are kind of coping at this point, just being thorough is all

Interesting. I am planning on doing a thread asking for research material for a FiM (and some G4 spin-offs) analysis. I am mostly interested on interviews and production material such as the one gotten from the 2019 leak, but I also want to look for various reviews of the show from different people on the community at the time the seasons were coming out (or close to that time). So a video like the one OP shared covering this topics, even if years laters, is quite useful.
>>
>>43406242
Watch the brony documentary made by De Lancie. In one of the interviews, Lauren Faust talks about how much of season 1 aligns with her vision, where she says that season 1 is 83% her vision, which is kind of weird considering that her whole NMM arc got squeezed into the first two episodes.

Ziggas will really jerk off Faust and claim she had a perfect vision for the show and everything from S1-S2(or at least half of the later) was perfect, and then they will just forget shit they are complaining about in later seasons was in the show because they don't even watch S1-S2 anymore. Maybe they never even did and it's all a LARP. They'll also just eat up obviously lies anyone with neurons can see through like E1+E2 being planned for a whole season and not just being a shitty direct to DVD promo or pilot episode to put in front of executives from the start.
>HASBRO!
>CORPOS!

None of that will save you from the great chair and bipedal/anthropomorphic histrionics you retards parroted all thread, or any of the other obvious things the OP got wrong like Hearths Warming not being pony-cultural(the first episode was about the history of Equestria and the pony tribes coming together). Come to think of it - why the fuck are they even complaining about Hearths Warming being a later season problem to begin with??? THE FIRST HEARTHS WARMING EPISODE WAS IN SEASON 2! Retard didn't mention Hurricane Fluttershy either for world building even though it's an important element of what he was harping on about. Somepony slap his nuts, holy larpcoal.

Except that was not the point of the episode. It was to show how useful AJ was to Ponyville, not that she cannot be outclassed at anything by anyone. Literally the episode before that has RD and AJ hoof-wrestling on equal terms.

>In no fucking universe should Pinkie Pie be asking Applejack to take the lead on baking sweets SHE LIVES AND WORKS AT THE SUGARCUBE CORNER!

it's not out-of-character wanting to get a hand at your job from time to time, Pinkie does not always has the most reasonable of judgements, so I don't think it's weird for her to trust someone else to help her once.
Also, most of the inconsistencies you mention happened during the same season when it was clearly more episodic and less focused on continuity.

It is the exact opposite. Hasbro wanted the show to be 11 minutes long, but Faust asked for 22 minutes so they can properly explore the lesson they want to give. You can't get such a basic fact correct, so I'll assume you're rage-baiting and move on from this thread.

>Lauren Faust talks about how much of season 1 aligns with her vision, where she says that season 1 is 83% her vision, which is kind of weird considering that her whole NMM arc got squeezed into the first two episodes.
I'm convinced Lauren Faust was just lying about wanting it to be a season when it's so very clearly structured as both a pilot to executives and movie plot. We basically got the equivalent of A New Generation stapled onto the front of the series and anybody who thinks otherwise is coping. Honestly if it had been a theatrical release or straight to VHS to promote the show, and then used that as an optional but canon start of the timeline of the show that was technically self contained, people wouldn't have such harsh feelings about it. As a cold open, it was awful and was never going to be anything other than what it was.

>>
>26 minute video
It's not that deep.
FIM "fell off" because:
>our expectations of quality got higher; the entire reason FIM took off is because expectations were super low and then the show turned out actually nice
>the old writers left and were replaced with new writers who didn't give a shit and were just there for an easy paycheck
>Mom was no longer there to do the tard-wrangling work; McCarthy and Jim were yes-men that did whatever Hasbro told them to
>she wasn't there to tard-wrangle the animators either, so we end up getting dozens of exaggerated meme faces per episode, and the ponies acting and moving like humans when they're supposed to be horses

Mid-seasons are arguably better, just depends what you want in a cartoon. I personally want more than simply cute and funny, I prioritize the writing, character development, and drama. S1 was really cute though it was amusing seeing how dumb-cute ponies can be!

Don't you realize all of your arguments are just about how it appeals to you specifically, with nothing objective at all? You've already convinced yourself of something and are trying to bend objective information just so it aligns with your opinion.

And I'm talking about every single one of you, whether you're a season one purist or a later seasons apologist.

Refreshing to see a genuinely articulate FiM analysis vid. However saying Hearths warming is a generic soulless analogue to real world Christmas is braindead. So is lumping in Season 2 as one of “the later seasons.” Also devolves into total autism towards the end
