I've always accepted that Season 4 is a soft reboot to FIM. It's clear the events of the previous 3 seasons did happen, but they had to reestablish the characters and have them relearn lessons they learned before for a new audience. I'm not saying I like it, but it makes it easier for me when I revisit S1-3.
