Really neat analysis on an episode that I thought Pinkie was characterized horribly in. Too Many Pinkie Pies felt like the last episode that she was actually herself in. Personally I felt her being so obsessive and stressed flew right in the face of how sunshiny and optimistic and free-spirited she usually is, and that they were exaggerating it for humor, but it's really cool to see this kind of analysis.

>>43440127
Yep. A ton of her lines in Season 3 and Season 4 are just weird Gir-tier jokes that don't land like a lot of Gir's silly bullshit did. Thing about Gir is that he was comedy relief in a very dark and sinister feeling show, Invader Zim, and him being all "haha pineapples xD" played off of Zim's evil ambitions while also serving to make him look like an idiot, as Gir is his sidekick. Pinkie on the other hand is interjecting "haha pineapples xD" into heartfelt moments and conversations when she herself has been built up for being a wonderfully heartfelt and playful character at her best. It's a massive underservice to her writing in my opinion, and there's no tension or anything dark or sinister for her to break; quite the opposite, really, with how warm and comforting FiM is. There are, however, moments like in Ticket Master where she is shitposting to add levity to an argument - I think those worked really well.

Pinkie Pride is probably her final "real" episode and serves as a fucking fantastic sequel to A Friend in Deed and another step in her character arc that's been being built up since Griffon The Brush Off, by the way. Look forward to it, it's one of my favorites and does so fucking much with her story and development, even remembering small details about her habits and psychology.

I personally see Pinkie as very happy and strong. She'd adore having someone who loves her for who she really is and makes her feel like she's not too much, but she's a very very happy and optimistic and strong pony. We saw a lot of moments of weakness from her in Season 1 with her clinginess and abandonment issues and such, but she develops a ton moving on from that.

I am also very happy and optimistic. We'd just boost each other up even further. I'd love to have someone like that around.

I'm also not a ponkfag, but I appreciate that unlike many [pony]fags, ponkfags generally understand their mare to a higher degree more consistently. Mostly you guys seem to take her for what she is and don't make a ton of weird head canon and schizo takes. I love Pinkie, even if it's not to the same extent you do, I'm just grateful you guys are a reliable anchor.
>>
>>43452802
Aw, I'm flattered. If you're talking about my discussion too, then that does mean a good bit as I tend to analyze a lot of her softer and more sincere sides and I can downplay whenever she's presented as dumb or insensitive as not exactly being fair to her established character.

What kind of weird headcanons are you thinking about in particular compared to the stuff you see here, exactly?

>I'm just grateful you guys are a reliable anchor.
And thanks, if that even applies to me. I've been really enjoying coming to these threads to talk about her since so many others have a really deep connection with her too. I feel like that other Anon that's going through the series has "taken her for what she is" really well desu, as there were moments in the show that I've brushed off as not being accurate that he's put thought into incorporating into his overall view of her.

I'm struggling to see the dip in episode quality thus far in S4 (besides the superhero one). When the writers want to dedicate time to Pinkie, they still know how to deliver; in her own episodes, we don't see much of the aforementioned sit-com jokes that take up all of her lines in other ponies' episodes. Hell, I don't think she had one missed joke whole episode, even starting off strong surprising Twilight in her study https://youtu.be/tPJp1vNIss0?t=7 The interaction really shows what a free spirit Pinkie is, and we see this throughout the episode. None of the mishaps in the roadtrip even begin to phase Pinkie because she's just along for the ride to have a good time. I think she'd make a great travel partner to bring along to lift everypony's spirits with her positivity.

Like I said last thread, I think she embodies her element of harmony really well, but I think her role is much more than just telling jokes. That's just the mechanism that she uses to keep morale high and everypony happy and invested in the group (two qualities which are essential to group cohesion aka friendship). desu, I thought that some of the "I want Pinkie to save me" posts here and there are a bit sappy, but I can't discount the utility [and oftentimes, relief] of having a positive and optimistic partner like Pinkie would be, even if the stakes in the show are never truly that high. Though, it would be cool to see an episode like Avatar's "The Desert", where some stressful predicament seriously affects the group, and Pinkie's supportive capabiliities being tested trying to keep everypony afloat.

This episode also confirmed a few theories from a previous thread about Pinkie being brave and using humor to ease tensions during arguments. When the raft goes through the "scariest cave in Equestria" Pinkie is utterly unphased and uses the opportunity to enjoy herself with the Apples. Likewise when they are plummeting down the waterfall. Like I said, Pinkie's lightheartedness is an important resource in stressful situations like these to calm others down and give them hope that things will improve (stated another way, if Pinkie is worried, then all hope is lost). This isn't outright shown in the episode since the focus is a bit more on the Apples, but ponkfags are used to reading between the lines. Anyway, she joins-in on the Apples' argument at the end of the episode just to have fun, not unlike how she did in "Ticket Master" also.

It kind of strikes me how prevalent "Pinkamena" is in the fanbase in spite of how little that side of Pinkie has been depicted in the show. Only 6 minutes in "Party of One" compared to normal Pinkie Pie in every other episode. I get that the argument is "she's a psycho just below her bubbly facade" but I think it's gratuitously stretched. Just kind of a funny observation about how there's an appetite to inject morbidity into the otherwise cutesy and sanitized paradise that Equestria is depicted as. It's like saying "this food is too delicious, there's got to be some way to make it taste worse so I can actually enjoy it."

I wish people would use her flat hair for her more serious moments, like if she starts to wonder if nobody takes her seriously and it's all her fault, but everyone likes the pink cannibal rapist trope instead.
>>
>>43459932
I think Pinkamena is kind of an "evil Superman" thing, like, people not being able to connect with something so pure and instead finding it more interesting to see it corrupted or have some kind of hidden darkness. I know a lot of the Pinkamena enjoyers I've met over the years just saw Pinkie as kind of shallow and dumb and mostly just liked the more fanon gory psychopath Pinkamena.

I like her flat hair side though. Ponk deserves to be told she's wonderful even when she's not feeling the energy and that she's more than just her parties and the smiles she gives. Pinkamena enjoyers have it fucking rough. The moment you hug her and tell you her genuinely love her for who she is that mane is exploding back into full curls and you're also going to be getting loved by Pinkie as her usual self instead.

>>43460578
I like it for when she's seriously hurt or upset about something rather than her just being normally hurt or sad. We saw her mane deflate in Party of One and in Pinkie Pride (granted much less because of how much stronger she had become at that point), and both of those situations tied into her abandonment issues. Overdoing the flat mane kind of makes a really striking part of her story not nearly as impactful.

Oh I meant the ones who like Pinkamena specifically, haha. Yeah, I've seen some people enjoy Pinkie as a more crazy BPD girl. I've never seen it in her myself - I think she has very valid reasons to get sad sometimes and she's more sensible than she lets on, but yeah it's an interpretation that's fairly popular too, and I have indeed seen people who find it endearing.

Just watched "Pinkie Pride" Not a great episode, I'll be honest. The plot was kind of contrived with all the ponies abandoning Pinkie minutes after all touting her abilities. Likewise for the conflict resolution, but creating a backstory for a character that was just created is excusable. Regardless, I thought it was a nice detail that Pinkie's positivity, manifested in her parties, can have consequential lasting contributions to other ponies' lives. Once again, this garners more respect for her element of harmony--that laughter/partying really is something important for its ability to brighten others' lives. At the outset of the show, I had the initial impression that Pinkie's element was kind of just the writers filling space or they wanted an excuse to have the jokester character (kind of like how >>43460692 mentions some of the fandom's perception that Pinkie is just shallow and dumb), but I've come to respect it much more over time.

But, back to the episode: not much new about Pinkie. We already knew she wants everypony to smile and that parties are her bread and butter for achieving this. I think there was a missed opportunity to more strongly highlight Pinkie's friends' happiness being her top consideration during her goof-off with Cheese. Maybe instead of trying to out-goof Cheese, Pinkie could have personalized what she brought to the competition--things that she knows Dash loves and would make her party special and personal (since we know Pinkie remembers these details about EVERYpony). Instead, the competition was just generic silliness versus generic silliness. A decent moment at the end when Pinkie realizes Dash isn't enjoying the over-the-top festiveness. Once again, perhaps this moment could have been used to contrast Pinkie's considerate nature against Cheese being more interested in going further and further with the silliness despite it not having the intended effect of enjoyment (though, this would have turned the conflict into Cheese learning a lesson instead).

I'll mention that a previous theory I had about Pinkie being most mentally vulnerable when she's alone is contradicted a little here. Even when left behind by everypony, Pinkie finds her confidence on her own to bounce back and resume party-planning. Then again, you could say that her trying on (or thinking of pursuing) different professions is evidence of her mental health and self-worth slipping, but her trying to be a surgeon's assistant by using cupcakes is so absurd that I'll chalk it up to just some nonserious writing, not a showcase of Pinkie's descent into a loss of self-conception. Also, I was promised that Pinkamena would make an appearance in this episode, but her main remained curly and bouncy throughout.

It wasn't that bad. I guess that Pinkie was going for a "tough love" approach with Fluttershy. It came off as kind of callous, especially since we've seen previous evidence of Pinkie being sensitive to Fluttershy in S1, but Pinkie's comments did seem to be the piece of advice that Fluttershy needed to perform in the end. Maybe Pinkie has become kind of desensitized to Fluttershy's sensitive nature and decided to try a different method of dealing with her this episode, acting a bit as a devil's advocate, representing the "worst nightmare" of on-stage performing to Fluttershy to show her that it really wasn't that bad. Compare this to the relatively ineffectual consolation that Rarity offers, "You're a great singer, but I understand that you're not comfortable so don't worry about performing" is a recommendation that doesn't force Fluttershy to overcome and grow from any conflict. Pinkie was definitely jarringly blunt this episode, but it was kind of necessary for her to be to present Fluttershy with a conflict to overcome. Whether you chalk this up as Pinkie pulling the strings as a mastermind trying to orchestrate her friends' personal growths or her being used as a mouthpiece for the writers to deliver the plot in an unserious, jokey way is up to your interpretation.

This moment was funny though
>"No offense, you kinda sounded like a dude."
Maybe this is Pinkie's was of expressing her preference for Fluttershy's original singing voice over the more baritone voice of Flutterguy

Oh really? I personally think it's one of her best written episodes. It captures the wonderfully emotionally intelligent and kind Pinkie we've seen in her best episodes and does a lot with it. It's a proper sequel to A Friend in Deed, it feels like. I consider it to be the final "true" episode in Pinkie's overall arc.

The surgeon thing was just a gag of her trying to find a place in the world but failing due to it not really being where her heart lies. See, just like in Party of One and her backstory, when Pinkie is up against feeling like she's simply not cut out to make it as herself, she tends to run away. You see this with her running back to her room when the ponies abandon her, and with her trying to find a new career, and then ultimately at the end of the episode. I dunno how accurate this is, but it feels like a fair amount of her self-worth is derived from the happiness and fun she can bring, and she's worried she's going to push others away with her natural energetic and silly self otherwise. Hence why she was so clingy with Rainbow in Griffon the Brush-Off, and why she immediately assumed they were all abandoning her in Party of One and got so hurt by that.

In The Smile Song, we see Pinkie go "It's true some days are dark and lonely, and maybe you feel sad, but Pinkie will be there to show you that it isn't that bad", and this is accompanied by what I consider to be a visual metaphor of her showing up to pull herself out of her own darkness - much like she did as a child when she found her optimism and her cutie mark. I feel this shows how strong she's become since Party of One.

>Also, I was promised that Pinkamena would make an appearance in this episode
Oh, no, when I said her mane goes flat, I meant when it deflates just a bit. "Pinkamena" doesn't exist exactly, other than it just being a depressed Pinkie. Her friends abandoning her in Party of One caused her to enter a very dark place and made her mane go flat, but in Pinkie Pride, we see the entire town abandon her because now someone is doing parties and smiles better than her assumedly. She's simply become so strong she's not nearly as hurt this time, and she bounces back, just like you described. She's an outcast at heart, being very strange and eccentric. Being abandoned hurts her a lot early on, but ultimately she's got the heart to go solo if needed as she grows up.

Well, I'd say there's a world of difference between a prank vs what Pinkie did in Filli Vanilli. Conflict is necessary for personal growth; I'm approaching Pinkie's behavior in the episode from that perspective. Think about it: what personal growth would Fluttershy gain from being the victim of a random prank? She'd cry and then there's no lesson to learn from the ordeal. Contrast this with your webmrel: Fluttershy had a cry and then Pinkie's words [after some distillation from Rarity] caused her to realize she would be able to handle facing the crowd. Pinkie was insensitive, yes, but it was deliberate and directed towards forcing Fluttershy to confront and overcome her stagefright.

That's the steelman version of my argument, at least. Like I said, definitely room for interpretation that this is still an example of inconsistent Pinkie writing.
>>
>>43463930
>It captures the wonderfully emotionally intelligent and kind Pinkie we've seen in her best episodes and does a lot with it
I only see this at the end of the goof-off, like I mentioned, and I don't think it was capitalized on that well. Perhaps it could have been set-up better with Pinkie's conflict being less about her confidence as a party-planner being wounded and more about her swallowing her pride and stepping back from the planning in order to give Dash the party that she really wants, Cheese's party. The lesson could have morphed into...well, there wasn't really a lesson in this episode, but, regardless--something akin to "the customer is always right." Pinkie would be forced to weigh her desire to plan Dash's party against Dash's desire to have Cheese to plan the party, with Pinkie eventually realizing that it's Dash's special occasion and so she should have the final say in things (since that will make Dash the happiest, which should be Pinkie's goal). I'll admit that this is kind of my headcannon, as I mentioned a similar alternate lesson in "Too many Pinkie Pies" >>43430406

>a fair amount of her self-worth is derived from the happiness and fun she can bring, and she's worried she's going to push others away with her natural energetic and silly self otherwise
I agree with the first half of this, and I think I've said as much in a number of posts, but I don't see her ever worry about her antics being off-putting to others. If she were self-conscious about this, we would have seen much different interactions between her and Cranky "A friend in deed"
>>

This actually did happen. She took Cheese as a threat to her place in Ponyville but ultimately remembered Laughter, and that it's the happiness brought into the world that matters. Her own insecurity got in the way of that.

>I agree with the first half of this, and I think I've said as much in a number of posts, but I don't see her ever worry about her antics being off-putting to others. If she were self-conscious about this, we would have seen much different interactions between her and Cranky "A friend in deed"
Hmm, neat take. I honestly ran out of space in that post so I couldn't go too far into detail, but, to me it's moreso that Pinkie is balancing true authenticity and the desire to be herself with the worry that she might be too much. I think she wants to keep being playful and expressing her energy, but also worries about that too, granted, yeah. I think this is where our mindset can differ a bit, because I'm more like "Wow, they really wrote Pinkie as kind of ignorant post Smile Song" and I wish they toned her down just a tiny bit. It felt like she was being wacky and obsessive for the sake of having a conflict plus it being funny, but, whereas I'll criticize the show for moments like that and shrug them off, you take everything more genuinely and want to take it as it is.

I really admire that about your view of it, it's very pure. For me there just came a certain point where I was like "I dunno chief I don't think my waifu would do this" and I started getting kinda skeptical of the writing kek. Also far as you having a "headcanon" there's nothing really incorrect about it so long as it's sourced in actual canon moments in the show and you have reasons to back it up; the writers themselves were kinda freelance and just did what they thought would make a really fun episode, so, a lot of the times it feels like our interpretations are just as valid as theirs. This is something I love about MLP and it's one of the reasons the fandom is as creative and fun as it is. So long as the headcanon's not some wacky silly shit like "yeah Fluttershy wants to kill people" and is more in the lines of "Fluttershy is shy partially because of the bullying she faced as a kid in Hurricane Fluttershy" then I'd say it's a very very legit thing to think. It's good fun to hear about others takes like that.

Really, I am just holding on to the initial characterization that you described a few threads ago. I am trying my best to filter all of Pinkie's actions through the mindset of "the wise fool" You and others are right about Pinkie being wacky and obsessive, and I may be putting much more thought into things trying to rationalize all of her words and actions than the writers who just wanted to fill their zany silly quota for the episode. Sometimes my justifications have to stretch pretty far and rely on a lot of good faith in interpreting Pinkie as much smarter than she's being portrayed. I think the only episode where I've been seriously dissatisfied was the train mystery one >>43423539

>This actually did happen. She took Cheese as a threat to her place in Ponyville but ultimately remembered Laughter, and that it's the happiness brought into the world that matters. Her own insecurity got in the way of that.
Yes, she does admit that she let her pride get the better of her, but her reconciliation with the others still felt like a concession on her part. The best they could say to her was that she's the permanent ponyville party planner while Cheese was merely temporary. She was right to be insecure, given that she ties her self-worth to her ability to plan parties [which make smiles] and everypony tacitly admits that Cheese is superior in this regard, even if he is temporary. Idk just didn't feel very satisfactory to have Pinkie's victory be that she played a role in the new character's backstory so actually she's still the true master.

To expound a bit more, it just felt like Pinkie was dragged through the dirt a little here. She gets set up high in her opening song only to get knocked down by being upstaged by a newcomer and then abandoned by the whole town. She doesn't really get a redemption in the end; her friends admit that Cheese is the better party planner and that the only thing Pinkie has going for her is seniority and personal bias she's their friend. Like I said, I would have been fine if this personal angle would have been leveraged to her advantage (her specialized, personal knowledge of all of the ponies in Ponyville allows her to plan truly special parties for her friends), but the best we get is an olive branch from Cheese, the winner, reassuring Pinkie that he won't be here to upstage her permanently so it's ok that she's inadequate. I know that's not what's explicitly stated, or the intent of what was stated, but that's the fundamental resolution.

Heck, Pinkie is hurt so badly that she packs up her things and is ready to leave town (not a great display of emotional maturity here to cut all ties with her home and friends over feelings of inadequacy by the way). It's only after she's pushed this far that her friends get the program and try to talk her back from leaving. Even then, like I said, Dash's consolation of Pinkie doesn't solve her fundamental issue of feeling upstaged and outdone, they just sidestep the issue and have Pinkie accept 2nd place because Cheese won't be here permanently. "Hey, look, Cheese is better than you and there's no way around that, but if you leave then we'll be out of luck when he moves to another town so please stay :)" Just didn't feel like a proper resolution to Pinkie's insecurity/inadequacy

I will mention, some display of maturity from Pinkie here in putting Dash's happiness over her own desires, admitting that Cheese should plan the party since it will make Dash happy https://youtu.be/Vc2zu_gga7Q?t=492 but then this is bucked by her kind of refusing Twilight's concern and potential counseling here by concealing her emotions and lying that everything is fine. If Pinkie had opened up to her friend here, then maybe she could have avoided her ensuing depressive episode of defeatism and self-doubt.

>>43464494
Didn't like the episode. Pinkie gets done dirty being outclassed by a newcomer and abandoned by her friends. Her friends then settle for her subpar talents in the end just because the newcomer won't be a permanent resident (which it's a good thing that they invented a reason for Cheese not to take Pinkie's job otherwise she'd really have to pack up and leave town)

Haha, you've been doing an awesome job with it and I love to see what you have to say. Truth be told, the "wise fool" thing is mostly applicable in Season 1, and mostly in Season 2 with a couple questionable moments and then in a handful of select episodes and moments from there on out. As soon as Season 3 we start to see the "zany silly quota" be a very real thing Pinkie is being written by. She becomes really rocky and inconsistent later on, mostly being a gag dispenser. Add her sudden interest in screaming out all of her lines and you have a rather painful experience for most Ponkfags.

>everypony tacitly admits that Cheese is superior in this regard
Oh yeah, I always wondered if Cheese's big talent was actual party planning professionally while Pinkie's talent is having sheer joy and optimism she can share with others, and her love of parties is a means to an end to share that love with others. It's why her parties are cutesy and heartfelt and sweet and Cheese's are all these mega super well planned flashy events.

>>43464442
>reassuring Pinkie that he won't be here to upstage her permanently so it's ok that she's inadequate
I don't really see Pinkie as "inadequate" so much as different. Her little cute Rainbow Dash drawing came from the heart even if Cheese's was all professionally done.

>Heck, Pinkie is hurt so badly that she packs up her things and is ready to leave town (not a great display of emotional maturity here to cut all ties with her home and friends over feelings of inadequacy by the way).
Oh absolutely. Same as in Party of One. Her loved ones having negative perceptions of her is the one thing her optimism seems to struggle with (I always assumed it was because of her being so different around family, since it was the most canon-friendly thing that made sense). Even her moping around after the town abandons her and putting away all of her party stuff is rather melodramatic. It's just a part of who she is initially, and we still see it come out just a little bit when she's put into a situation she's not amazing at dealing with in a healthy way.

>I will mention, some display of maturity from Pinkie here in putting Dash's happiness over her own desires, admitting that Cheese should plan the party since it will make Dash happy
Loved that part. Pinkie and Rarity had the best "element" episodes in Season 4 because of how hard it pushed their characters in really meaningful ways based on prior character development, in my opinion.

Exactly. I just wish that this was the point of the episode instead of the resolution that we got. Cheese has a bigger gun (more extravagant and off-the-wall parties) but Pinkie is the better marksman (she knows her clientele better because she loves her friends so she can deliver quality over quantity). It shoulda been this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYeNKdJhk98

>Her loved ones having negative perceptions of her is the one thing her optimism seems to struggle with
Well in this crazy world of technicolor ponies where your the entire town can turn on you on a dime, who can blame her for having such hangups. She's completely validated in this episode as all her friends neglect her minutes after singing her praises. Any sensible person might detach themselves from relationships as a coping mechanism in response from this, but Pinkie either:
1.) doesn't have the wherewithall to do this
2.) can't detach because she's too dependent on external validation (which is why she's so affected by abandonment and slights to her ability to make others smile)
3.) won't detach because of her strong personal desire to make others smile, so she powers through
4.) won't detach because the other ponies need laughter in their lives (or she perceives that they need it from her specifically, like how I mentioned in >>43434741) and she doesn't want to recuse herself as a sort of keystone species that everypony depends on
Whatever the case, it must be a tough existence that she leads, ever paranoid about being able to fulfill her role as the smile-maker and wary of whether or not her friends will switch allegiances depending on the writers' whims. You can even add on top of this her desire to be taken seriously and respected (a definite uphill battle when you're the literal joke element), although the last time I saw this aspect of her character was back in S2 protecting the Cakes' cake on the train. With all of these mental...proclivities, I think I can see justifications for/perceptions of Pinkamena a little better now. I guess this is why I had such a bad perception of "Pinkie Pride" because I didn't want to see a selfless yet vulnerable mare get abused by the plot/writers so much. She really didn't deserve to get smacked down so hard by the "Pinkie, but better" original character.
>>
>>43465116
Hm, I've never really had such a pessimistic look on the episode before. I just always felt like them taking an interest in Cheese was them maybe not fully understanding Pinkie's insecurities or making a mistake, and the writers kind of just wanting them to leave her behind for the sake of Pinkie being able to take down her old biggest fear once and for all. I can't help but feel like maybe the rest of the Mane 6 look more bad in this episode because of how Pinkie responded internally? She outright puts on a smiling face to convince Twilight she's "okay" (I always figured this was her not wanting to dampen the mood and make them feel guilty rather than her just being stubborn and prideful) when she's asked about the party and such, and same with Rainbow ditching her.

Still, yeah, I do get frustrations with the writers not always handling these really heartfelt characters in the best ways. Pinkie Pride never registered to me as being a ":(" episode for Pinkie because she bounces back so confidently and finally conquers a lot of her inner demons. It was stuff like Baby Cakes and Mmmystery on the Friendship Express that registered as a little unfair to Pinkie to me.

>I think I can see justifications for/perceptions of Pinkamena a little better now
Ultimately at her heart, Pinkie's biggest insecurity is that she really just wants to be loved. She's very ragtag and a little messy, but really just hopes that she'll be able to have friends who see her for who she is and love her dearly.

>I guess this is why I had such a bad perception of "Pinkie Pride" because I didn't want to see a selfless yet vulnerable mare get abused by the plot/writers so much. She really didn't deserve to get smacked down so hard by the "Pinkie, but better" original character.
Man, I feel for ya. Again, that episode never even stood out to me as being like that, but there absolutely are just some pretty cruel episodes in the series. Yakety Sax torments the hell out of Ponk but also completely forgets everything that makes her special in doing so and dials up every bad thing the writers like to do with her to 11, for example. Mare Do Well was just abhorrent to Dash, too.

>I can't help but feel like maybe the rest of the Mane 6 look more bad in this episode because of how Pinkie responded internally?
Definitely. Party of One was excusable since it was a benign misunderstanding over a surprise party, but here we see (either explicit or oblivious) abandonment of Pinkie by her friends which really flies in the face of friendship being magic (especially from Rainbow "Loyalty" Dash). For a similar reason, I really couldn't stand the mystery train episode for how it blemishes Dash, Rarity, and Fluttershy as backstabbers and liars just for the sake of having a plot, it seems (it's especially jarring behavior coming from the latter two). Anyway, like I mentioned, there's such a whiplash going from the "everyone loves Pinkie's parties and this is her special talent" song to "Wow, Cheese is super cool, see ya later Pinkie, don't wait up!" song within the span of 2 in-universe minutes. I know I can't stop repeating myself, but the show builds-up Pinkie's self-worth being tied to her parties so much only to then take that away from her in an instant via the "Pinkie, but better" character. Just feels like a gut punch to...well anyone who is a fan of any of the mane 6 (except maybe Twilight). Pinkie fans don't like to see her neglected and spiral into self-doubt and fans of the other ponies don't like seeing them abandon a friend just for there to be a plot (once again, especially Rainbow "Loyalty" Dash).

>She outright puts on a smiling face to convince Twilight she's "okay" (I always figured this was her not wanting to dampen the mood and make them feel guilty rather than her just being stubborn and prideful)
No, your initial take is right. I also think Pinkie was putting on a facade here so as not to get in the way of Dash having the party she wants. By this point, Pinkie is the opposite of prideful, stewing in her own defeat and self-doubt, but covering these feelings up so that others won't worry (always putting others' needs before her own)
>>
>>43465143
>Pinkie Pride never registered to me as being a ":(" episode for Pinkie because she bounces back so confidently and finally conquers a lot of her inner demons.
I just have trouble with the conflict resolution. She bounces back, sure, but I view it as a temporary boost to her confidence, not a permanent solution. She never really gets to prove herself since she ultimately concedes that Cheese trumps her abilities. I think that, if she hadn't threatened to leave town, Cheese's party would have gone off without a hitch with her as a distant afterthought in her friends' minds, ultimately validating her fears of inadequacy and abandonment. And if Cheese wasn't given a deus ex machina backstory to reassure Pinkie in the end, I think he'd fit the role of the episode's antagonist (maybe unintentionally) for having thoroughly stolen the show from Pinkie, surpassing her in the way that matters most.
>inb4 but Pinkie's parties are special because of her personal connections to the ponies of ponyville
I know that and you know that, but Pinkie was the one who needed to hear that message and be able to demonstrate it in order for the conflict to have a satisfying conclusion, in my opinion. As it stands, Cheese just trumps her in seemingly every way unless you're the most discerning ponkfag who's able to read between the lines and see that Pinkie's special talent is her consideration for her friends (which is every pony in town).

>but there absolutely are just some pretty cruel episodes in the series. Yakety Sax torments the hell out of Ponk but also completely forgets everything that makes her special in doing so and dials up every bad thing the writers like to do with her to 11, for example.
Well at the rate I'm going, I can't wait to watch the episode and come out of it with a 5D chess justification of how the mastermind Pinkie was pulling the strings the entire time and it was a magnum opus of her character writing
