Hello, this thread is for dumping any interesting data relating to MLP on Google Trends, with its popularity over time and in different regions, as well as comparisons with other search topics. Here is a global map for MLP vs Sonic for the length of MLP's run. Link here for that search if anybody wants to explore more from that specifically. Feel free to be creative in stuff to compare MLP's popularity to, Google Trends is a very fun tool to play around with! :)https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2010-10-10%202019-10-12&q=%2Fm%2F08b26_,%2Fm%2F0czdsgs&hl=en-US

Ever since MLP:FiM premiered, it has consistently been far less popular in the United States than Spongebob according to Google Trends. However, there was a brief window in which MLP was able to give Spongebob a run for its money. That was during MLP season 4, in which MLP was at peak popularity, and Spongebob was on a massive hiatus in which only a few episodes premiered.https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2013-12-29%202014-05-19&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F0czdsgs,%2Fm%2F07vqnc&hl=enThe best few month window of time I could find for MLP was from 12/29/2013 through 5/19/2014. There are definitely days or week long periods in this time where MLP was flat out ahead, but I wanted to go with a months long period so the data is better. Although MLP was still behind Spongebob naturally, it wasn't behind by much. And the state map reveals an interesting regional pattern, in which while being behind in the rest of the country MLP:FiM dominates the Pacific and Mountain states (some by landslides, best state for MLP was Utah where it was at 70% of searches). What caused this? I have no clue. Any theories for the regional differences present on this map?

Link to this Google Trends page: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2012-04-01%202016-10-31&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F03spz,%2Fm%2F0czdsgs&hl=enDue to it being a popular country, Israel has generally been more popular than MLP. But MLP was able to put up a good fight from April 2012 through October 2016, with the exception of two significant periods in 2012 and 2014 where Israel's searches skyrocketed due to news events. But during the rest of this 4 and a half year period, MLP either ran even nationally or was just slightly behind. And in the end MLP ended up being more popular than Israel in 23 states, mainly in the mountain, great plains, and midwestern states. While Israel was more popular in the Northwest, South, and Pacific states. Unfortunately, MLP is significantly behind nationally, in large part due to Israel having a commanding lead in 3 of the 4 most populated states (60% in California, 78% in New York, 62% in Florida). Any thoughts?Note that one or two 50/50 states may have different colors under that link versus my screenshot. When states are nearly tied on Google Trends, the results can randomly flip colors on the map due to being so close.

>>43448707here, I had Gemini explain this: Several cultural, demographic, and distribution factors explain why this geographic split looks so stark.1. Cultural Roots and the Gaming SubcultureSonic’s Urban/Hip-Hop Intersection: Since his 1991 debut, Sega explicitly designed Sonic with 1990s urban "attitude," sneaker culture, and fast-paced action. Over the decades, Sonic embedded himself deeply into Black American and Latino pop culture, hip-hop music references, sneakerhead communities, and fighting game/arcade scenes (FGC) that thrive in dense metropolitan corridors.MLP’s Online Subculture Footprint: The 2010s "Brony" phenomenon originated and grew primarily on imageboards and online forums (like 4chan and early Reddit). Subcultures rooted heavily in PC gaming, early internet fandom spaces, and tabletop/fantasy conventions historically over-indexed among white, suburban, and tech-adjacent demographics, which align heavily with regions like the Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, and parts of the Upper Midwest.2. Urbanization vs. Broadband/Tech InfrastructureMobile/Console vs. Streaming/Fandom Hubs: Sonic’s appeal spans consoles, mobile games, and mainstream fast-food marketing campaigns, giving the franchise ubiquitous visibility in high-density, diverse urban and suburban centers across California, Texas, and the Atlantic coast.Niche Online Fandoms: Friendship Is Magic fandom required heavy engagement with fan-made music, YouTube animations, and digital art communities. Regions with high concentrations of tech workers, college towns, and suburban internet hobbyists (Cascadia, Colorado, Utah) drove intense per-capita search volumes for the show.3. Media Access and Cable DistributionBroadcast Availability: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic aired on The Hub / Discovery Family, a niche digital cable tier that was often less accessible in lower-income urban households but standard in suburban and rural cable packages.Mass-Market Saturation: Sonic remained a multi-platform retail powerhouse available across bargain bins, mainstream gaming storefronts, Netflix, and terrestrial/basic syndicated cartoon blocks.4. Google Trends Search Intensity DynamicsGoogle Trends measures relative search interest (proportion of total queries within a state) rather than raw volume. In populous, diverse states like California or New York, gaming and mainstream pop culture terms (like Sonic) consistently capture broad baseline volume. In lower-population states across the Plains and Mountain West, dedicated online subcultures can skew relative search percentages toward niche fandom properties much more easily.

>>43453566Doubt it, or at least it's not specific to that franchise. Back then all those companies tried to use black culture of the time to make their characters look "hip and cool". That's why it's Mario "Bros." and the song for the cartoon show features two (I suppose) black rappers (they're actually literally unknown apparently and the song is written by a couple of unironic Jews, I just found out, but they sound black at least).
>>43453625I mean the rappers singing the song sound black, the songwriters are the Jews.
>>43453566Best game in the franchise has picrel in the sound test, as well the Japanese versions of the intro and outtro having vocals being sung by a couple of black guys who were hired by Casey Rankin and were uncredited.Adventure 1 has rap as Nipples the Enchilada's theme, same game also kinda telegraphs him as being Guatemalan-coded.I don't know about spic culture, but rap is a common guest in Sanic games.
