Come one and all to the meta-writefag and help raise the quality of MLP fanfiction! Featuring: Performative ponyfuckery!

ITT: expressing ego through writing, batpony exorcising demons by nostrilfucking, Rainbow Dash is a literal demon from hell and deserves to be sentenced to death, Patrick Bateman writes HiE, implying the existence of Flash Sentry (people are already disgusted), yet another HiE fic about a guy fucking Rainbow Dash, only the first 5 chapters of any crossover are good, Tyrantlestia sending fillies to The Rape Orphanage, Apple Bloom gets stung by a bee and actually dies because she's allergic, Daring Do gets boiled alive, dinotism, Starlight steals Sunburst's sperm, spreading your legs to avoid homelessness, the HPMoR x MLP crossover is not for MLP fans, Voldemort is Luna's personal advisor, the Ponyville postal service apparently allows you to order porn magazines, shared custody of OCs, fear of instructive media, and Death-fueled Nazi travel in time and space to prevent the apocalypse by becoming god and engaging in homosexuality!

I often think about writing something or even just modifying one of my existing stories for fimfic, but I never bother. It'd be too much effort going though every line of a story and ungreenify it all.
I'm also afraid of the reception since my writing's at best mediocre and my planning consists of thinking it out before starting and forming a very rudimentary plot along a few major events in my head. I've never had a written out plan for anything. That, I feel, would take the joy from it.

Here’s a real suggestion.

Black Beauty: The autobiography of a horse by Anna Sewell
>The story is narrated in the first person as an autobiographical memoir told by the titular horse named Black Beauty—beginning with his carefree days as a foal on an English farm with his mother, known as Duchess, to his difficult life pulling cabs in London, to his happy retirement in the country. Along the way, he meets with many hardships and recounts many tales of cruelty and kindness.

Idea I had, thoughts?

>celestia encounters a stallion she cannot manipulate or trick no matter what she does. He is always able to see through her games and know exactly what’s happening.
>she sees have as a potential threat/asset, and so tries to get him to work with her and equestria for everyone’s mutual benefit. But he completely refuses to cooperate with her no matter what she does. He evades and negates everything she or anyone else does to advance that interest.
>she initially sees this as entertaining, an opportunity to challenge herself and benefit her little ponies, and maybe make a new friend, but as her attempts continue to fail it begins to grow into a bit of an obsession as it bugs her that attempts to seduce (non-sexual definition) him into cooperation keep unilaterally failing no matter how subtle her tactics are.

Just finished reading the Twilights Mane Passion by Darkonshadows, the whole fic felt like a greentext shitpost, however it was interesting reading about a story were Twi has a mary sue tier power that is not linked with her being apprentice to Celestia and instead just doing her own thing in the background.

So i'm gonna preface this by saying I'm a pregfag and was the one who called it early on so maybe take what I say with a grain of salt.
This was fun, fast, had enjoyable dialogue, good worldbuilding, was well paced, and was written in the worst possible order you could have done it and completely lacked an interesting hook to start with.
Everything in the story hinges on the idea that Twilight is pregnant and not telling her friends, but that twist isn't shown until like 3/4ths through the story. Your opening is instead just some vague bits about her lying to her friends about *something*, and then you spend the next 20 or so chapters dropping obvious hints about her being knocked up.
I feel like this would have been a much stronger story if we, the readers, from the start, were told that she was pregnant as soon as chapter 1 hit, with the twist being the why and how. It'd make the peril have more stakes (and explain why she's unwilling to risk herself despite it implying alicorns are superpowered) and be a more compelling premise.

The impression I get from your post is that you intend to heavily favor the stallion. Celestia will be harassing an innocent party and getting embarrassed for her efforts while he gets to flex on an immortal monarch. That can work for Tom and Jerry comedy, but if you want it to be serious the story will benefit from writing them with less bias.

In general it's good to let characters represent themselves as best as you can write them, even if it means a character "wins" an interaction you didn't expect or want them to.

This reads like you have your own definition of manipulation that's disconnected from its actual meaning. Nobody calls influence towards action to everypony's mutual benefit "manipulation." Assigning Moondancer to state subsidized housing to prevent her from becoming a criminal to feed herself isn't manipulation.
Moreover, it sounds like you don't understand what manipulation primarily entails, which is the creation of an environment someone is in to make an action you want them to take to also be in their own self interest. For example, "If you tell anyone I stole your lunch money, I'll knock your teeth out."
By your own examples, this OC has to act in opposition to his own interests and the general interests of Equestrians in order to not be "manipulated" by Celestia. Which basically means that either he rapidly hurts himself to the point of ineffectuality and Celestia should probably put him in a padded room, or he causes a lot of harm and Celestia should just vaporize him.

Sonic and Rainbow Dash wouldn't get along. For one, Sonic is way faster than Rainbow. Another one is that Sonic likes to run and chillax on his own, while Rainbow Dash is always looking for an audience to impress with her antics. And there is something big, Sonic eats meat and Rainbow doesn't.

Also considering what Sonic gets up to, fighting giant monsters and fighting rivals, I think Rainbow would look up to Sonic like he's a blue Daring Do.

Honestly, kinda feels like one of those "the author has to do a bunch of BS to get the plot to work" kind of stories. Might be okay for a comedy oneshot, but that kind of plot wears out its welcome fast. It really only works as a comedy. Something more serious runs into the reverence problem. The ponies universally revere Celestia, so it seems odd one would summarily reject her for any reason.

Julian was demonstrably wrong about the schizophrenia part and certainly wrong about asserting the death of bicameralism (if we want to use the term for what he used it to mean despite likely being a misnomer) was the birth of consciousness, and modern consensus is that the BAC was neither as fast nor as universal as previously believed. But between consistent reports of the culture of semi-contacted tribes, the third man effect, and personal experiences of autistic individuals (who tend to develop theory of mind later and therefore have more solid memory of the period where it happens) it's very very likely he was onto something. Bicameralism is probably real and the gods' abandonment of humanity as consistently described at the time really was a cultural awakening that ended a long era of people never growing past hearing their own thoughts as an external voice because the society around them told them it was normal and induced ideas of who the voice belonged to. This is good, too, as it's what caused a fundamental shift in writing towards introspection.

i'm kinda giving up on trying to write well. Its impossible to do so for me. Everytime I try to adapt a story into page, it fails everytime.

Heres an excerpt from a fic I was working on.
Starlight Glimmer walked through the forest floor. Each step made a “clop” as her hooves stepped on the earth. From far away, Starlight could see lightbulbs hung from tall metal poles and several buildings from afar in front of her. They were placed in a vertical row on the ground with a middle road for travel. The moon laid over the town in its full bareness.

She entered the town and saw not many bat ponies around. They jammed the windows flat as she passed by. The town was situated in a forest, yet it was kept together even with the uncommon ground beneath them. Starlight waved at one batpony and he ran away into the darkness of the alley into the forest terrified. Confused at what to do, she followed the odd batpony where he ran.

From a dumpster at the side of the alley a batpony emerged and threw a pie at Starlight Glimmer. It hit her in the face and got over her fur. A horde of Batponies came by and laughed as they saw the poor unicorn drenched in pie.

“Why are you batponies so mean, I was just here to make a friend” said Starlight with a frown.

The Batponies laughed at the poor outsider. A batpony came from the group and went to Starlight Glimmer with a bat neck charm to celebrate the new occurrence. He placed it over her head and let it rest on her neck.

“Sorry” said the Batpony. “We are prankster ponies, are you the pony from Canterlot said to make friends with us?”.

Starlight giggled at the prank before she smiled. “Of course, I forgot certain ponies have customs, so wanna be friends?”

“You already are Starlight Glimmer from Canterlot” said the Batpony and they all disappeared from sight and went about their own time. They went to different stalls and businesses around. The disbursement of the horde of batponies was quick. All that was left was that Batpony who threw the pie.

“What's your name stranger?” said Starlight Glimmer.

“The name is Porthole,” he said.

There's some clumsy writing but I wouldn't say it fails necessarily. Maybe it's my purple prose showing but it's like you're describing the events objectively rather than telling a story.
Do keep writing though, it already exists so now you can tweak it as you like. If you really want to "write well" you can read a book and note what the author does that differs from your writing
>>
>>43455231
It's middle of the road. It's readable and clear, and the characterizations are simple. The way I go about writing is prioritizing volume over speed.

This leads me to build up a concept inside my head of what works and what doesn't, through trial and error. At the same time it gives me bad habits, and stagnation.

But writing a lot, at a mediocre level, is better than writing barely any perfection.
>>
>>43455231
Fixing the grammar of the line from
>“Why are you batponies so mean, I was just here to make a friend” said Starlight with a frown.

Your writing is fine. It's clear and easy to read. It doesn't waste my time. These are all good qualities.

More important than style are plot and characterization. This scene already has a plot. It does not dwell on characterization. You could add a lot more about the characters' thoughts and feelings to this scene. You could describe Starlight's feelings while she travels through the forest, her thoughts upon entering the batpony town, her reaction to being pied, and her trust or mistrust of the batponies. Right now, you breeze through this scene; these kinds of details would make your writing sound more polished.

It definitely reads like beginner writing, but the good news is that it’s easiest to improve quickly at that level. There’s a few things you could change already to make it a lot better.

Vary your sentence structure – almost every sentence you’ve written there is either “x did y” or “x was y”. Starlight Glimmer did this. The batpony threw that. The lightbulbs were placed there. It gets quite repetitive and sounds like listing everything that happens rather than trying to immerse your reader. Similarly, vary your sentence lengths. They all have a very similar rhythm that starts to grate, and where you have used longer sentences you’ve stuck with the same structure so it doesn’t work as the reprieve that they’re supposed to be.

Also try to be more descriptive, and make it more specific and tactile. Your first couple of sentences, for example, you have:

>Starlight Glimmer walked through the forest floor. Each step made a “clop” as her hooves stepped on the earth.

Which is… fine. But again, both sentences are X did Y, they’re about the same length, and the description is a bit thin and generic. Her hooves would clop on a lot of surfaces, that’s what hooves do. Focus on the earth instead, since that's the unique thing about this section that hints at civilisation here before you even describe the town. It’d be better as something like:

>The forest undergrowth gave way to bare, well-worn dirt, hard beneath Starlight's hooves.

Biggest thing is to just keep writing and keep reading. Not just ponyfic, actual books. And read them intentionally, looking at what they do with their sentence structure, and it should start to click.

>hie where the human gets ponified, pretends to have amnesia/memory loss, and uses his partial knowledge of the show’s setting to make it believable
>hie story where the above happens and the human uses it as a cover for randomly appearing and having no records of himself (something bad probably happened to him and now his memory is fucked up, that sort of cover story)
>hie where the human is ponified and concerned about fucking up the timeline and tells someone important like the princesses about what might happen in the future but says the knowledge is from prophetic dreams so they don’t get suspicious of him and actually believe him which they’d probably do since they exist in canon.

I have not seen any of these before but they seem like not weird or out there or difficult ideas to have. Someone should have thought of them by now and used them in a story.

I'd like to read my own stories as if it was the first time. I write mainly to fill the gaps of stories I want to read that don't exist. I wonder if I'd be happy with them...

The narrator feels very stiff and wooden in this and there's a lot of unnecessary detail that doesn't actually give the reader a lot of good info and only makes things more stretched.

>Each step made a “clop” as her hooves stepped on the earth.
Why does the narrator need to convey this? It can be assumed walking will make some kind of sound. Unless that noise is relevant in some way to the plot, you don't need to mention it.

>>43455241 mentioned this and I'd agree. The narrator sounds very dry and formal. There's not a single conjunction in the whole excerpt and information is presented very sterilely. It's also very fast. The narrator never seems to spend more than a single sentence detailing some action before immediately moving to the next. As >>43456065 said, it feels like we're going down a checklist of plot events to either get to the "good stuff" or just finish the story. There's no room to breathe and let the reader absorb the next action before another is immediately given to them:

>It hit her in the face and got over her fur.
>It splattered against her head. Bits of sticky strawberry goop dangled and dripped off her muzzle. She blinked her eyes in bewilderment at the sudden pastry attack.

Adding additional details and using descriptive verbs/nouns/etc. can enhance the text, make it feel less cold and wooden, while also letting the scene breath a little so the reader can better fill in details as the sequence moves along.

Another thing that can really help is making the narrator an actual character. Give him a personality. Make him a little biased. Have him get into the characters heads to show us what they're feeling. Maybe Starlight's scared as she walks through the woods? Maybe she's mad or annoyed at Twilight for making her go out there to meet the bat ponies? Maybe she's overconfident and smug in her friendship abilities?

What if Sunrise but deliberately,
>/FSBC/

Am I morally obliged to hate this story for its deliberate anti-FiM? Some of my most disliked fics ever earned their spot for this reason, and most of the [Horror] fics I enjoyed leaned hard into the opposite of it, contrasting the evil with ponies' goodness. But this? Yeah.
One thing is clear to me: this is an objectively excellent ending. It's insanely unsatisfying, completely gross, and so hollow it leaves you feeling nearly as empty as Do. But that's the whole point. This is what we've been going towards since the start, with Dr. Caballeron's talk of losing. I do have to applaud it—to craft something so extremely anti-FiM, the author had to understand the "ponyness" of the setting well. I particularly love how the story walks you through several moods, from the almost boredom, through Daring's excitement at uncovering the true story, restlessness at the forced wait, the sheer need to unmask the possible villain and put a stop to it... only to rip this delusion from you and Daring alike, presenting you with such a ghastly and offensively anti-pony situation where there are no possible acceptable outcomes. This is probably the first time that a "completely evil" Celestia plot point was used to improve the quality of the story, despite that amateur cliche's vast popularity.

Also, I am just now realizing that it's not a first for the author. Out of all the fic that I read, only two horror stories with this style of ending come to mind as successes—and The Needle was written by the same guy. There, some people itt coped REALLY, REALLY hard to deliberately close their eyes and not accept the messed-up "everyone loses" ending, and the threat was still on the outside, something alien and malign—and happening "just" to a group of OCs. Here, though? The author took that idea much further, ending with a creatively braver ending, imo. I kind of hate the fic, but I am greatly impressed, too. It's an awful thing to write and almost certain to result in a story that's simply bad (see: Sunrise), but I think this author managed to actually pull it off. This is really good, but I don't know if I can stomach favoriting it on principle.
Bump, bump, whump.

Oh yeah, and everything else from week one applies here as well. The story had a really well-planned pacing until the finale, the (rare) errors were super annoying, etc. Still. While I don't want to gloss over the reading experience here, when it comes to a fic brazenly build around an ending as horrendously subversive as this one, its lasting impression kind of lives and dies based on said finale.

Luckily, next week we won't need to contend with creatively daring choices as we descend into the TRUE underworld: A [Comedy] Spikefic Romance:

>12-17
Following the strong first impression from the first half, the second half slows down considerably as Daring is doing homework at the library and reading through codices (a word that is now firmly stapled to my brain after reading this), and it begins to feel more like a mystery story than an adventure/horror. There's a lot of Daring being told to stop being so daring and stop sticking her nose into things, only for her to go, "Nah, Id' win" in response. I still like all the dialogue and prose and the imagery in the story, but I feel as though this section drags on a bit. Of course, all of this is in service to build up the big reveal at the end, so I can't say it is pointless.
>18-23
Everything is leading to the cocky heroine getting more that she bargains for, and it delivers on that wholesale. I agree, the story does a really good job at selling Daring's total despair and defeat, and it feels well-earned and well-executed.
>to craft something so extremely anti-FiM, the author had to understand the "pony-ness" of the setting well
I think the reason it works in this story is because the writer is writing with intent. Fics that feel anti-pony cause a barrage of "she wouldn't fucking say/do that" because it becomes clear the writer doesn't fully understand the setting. Here, it services Daring Do's downer ending. Atlaca isn't Equestria, and this isn't an episode where everything works out in the end. Plus, Daring and Caballeron still act pony enough throughout the story.
I'm still on the fence with River. Her fate is a major beat in the ending, and I feel like I should care about this pony as she is about to become a sacrifice to feed our gluttonous sun. With Daring and Long Count are carrying the emotional weight of that scene, it feels a bit easy to forget about her. I may need to read over the scenes with her again, but as a character, I just think she's fine. There are still definitely scenes dedicated to fleshing her out, but they will probably feel like death flags on the second read. Could there have been extra scenes to flesh out her friendship with Daring? Sure, but you run a risk of making it harder to believe Daring would leave her at the altar.
I enjoyed this one. I'd probably also like this author's other, shorter Daring stories.
>>

I went down to Mexicolt and all I got was the death of the Equestrian dream.
>“Why not? Alicorns’re immortal, ain’t they?”
I think it's curious how once this drops, we enter a downward spiral that never lets up.
What can I say that's just not quoting all of Long Count's lines that take on a new layer of meaning with all the reveals.
So, yeah. Those reveals.
I like how it's a slow peeling of layers, where Daring feels she's finally discovering what's REALLY going on, until we get the final reveal and...
Well, I'll be. I like the utter despair and hopelessness. You can argue the degree to which this plays with canon, and how pony or unpony it is, which will depend on what you get of the show and fan media. Or if you like Nic Cage's The Knowing.
On a personal level, I think this story is great. I loved every part of it, even the slow middle third.A bit light on the horror for most of its run, but it certainly paid off in the end.
I guess I would've liked more variety in the earlier segments.
Daring and Caballeron go to the Library, the Inn, and Cahuacan. That's about it. Surely there was something else Atlaca had to offer. Perhaps other characters. Locations. Maybe some experiences other ponies had with the spirits, or talk with somepony who had a loved one lost to the Nameless Days.
If my main complaint about the story is that I wanted more of it, is it really a criticism?
Anyhoot. I'm ready for next week's existential horror.

with all this talk of pony vs non-pony stories, i feel like i don't fully understand what people mean by this. i would like (you)r personal take on which of these concepts feel pony, which don't, and why.
>pony a is permanently disfigured by an accident caused by pony b. pony a must learn to live with this, and pony b must battle between wanting to make it up to pony a, if such a thing is even possible, and not wanting to face the consequences of their mistakes, worrying that they'll never be forgiven.
>the big villain can be soundly defeated, but only if a pony sacrifices their life to do it
>the citizens of ponyville have a constant dread hanging over their heads. living right on the edge of the everfree, monster attacks are common, and devestating. every day is lived in fear that some awful creature could burst out of the forest at any moment and kill you or your loved ones; and these fears are not unfounded, as monster attacks are the leading cause of death in ponyville. foals are not allowed outside unsupervised period, and weapons are stashed in public places all over ponyville so any particularly brave ponies can at least try to protect themselves and others against the monsters.
>a conman successfully scams several ponies. he is discovered for what he is, but not until after he runs away with the money. all his victims can do is try to recoup their losses.

Well, I was glad to be right about the direction the story changed to in the second week. Then I slapped a downvote on it.

Immediately, the retaliation against Daring for dashing out was appreciated. I like that there were some consequences in the inn for her recklessness. The interplay between Daring, Adobe and Riverbed made them a little more interesting. Then, the mystery and the process for her and Caballeron sorting out the sequence of events with Tilapia and Cahuacan and Long count was a lot of fun. Finding out the nameless days had a name was a nice touch, but my ereader being unable to render the name was less fun. I especially appreciated the layer of the mystery that was added by the environment outside the inn being genuinely not that dangerous. The trip through the gateway was nice, too.

And then it all fell down a flight of stairs, wetly. “The princesses secretly run Equestria’s utopia on the fuel of equine sacrifice” is a shit trope. I’m not going to give credit for bravery with this ending, it’s a cheap shock. And it ignores a lot of canon for that cheap shock. I’m not particularly inclined to give it credit for the second concept, either. This fic opened my eyes to how interesting of an idea it would be to put Daring and Caballeron together on an adventure, and especially to contrast their relationship with winning and losing. I feel like the idea still hasn’t been done reasonably.

As for The Needle, I would always recommend it over this fic.

>so I can't say it is pointless
In general, it's very pleasant to read a story written by someone good enough to plan things out properly; exactly what you say about writing with intent! It doesn't happen every time, but when it does, the payoff is so good. Like here.
>Daring and Caballeron still act pony enough
They do act completely pony, yes. Even Caballeron, who is consistently portrayed as a former villain who's not *really* reformed, keeps his ponyness. I don't think the ending could ever work without contrasting that with the horrors of the ending reveal.
>River
I also didn't care for her as much as maybe the author hoped I would, but Daring just leaving her there was still very chilling, so I think she did her job fine.

>>43458767
>and how pony or unpony it is,
I don't think that's something that can be argued. It is unpony. Extremely and deliberately so. Whether you think it's fine for fics to do that (when intentional) is subjective, but the story's finale is so hopeless precisely because it subverts the "pony" expectations set up by the rest of the fic.
I cannot deny that the plan was creatively ambitious and that its execution was great, and the only thing stopping me from pressing the favorites button is the question whether that's a direction fimfics should go to.
>I would've liked more variety
Maybe, but I can't say I disliked the sense of isolation pushing Daring out to explore. I also like how the mystery is ultimately unsolved, how the story's ending comes crashing on you right as we're starting to "solve" the gate to the underworld.

>>43458838
>I slapped a downvote on it.
I think that's just incorrect. Like, straight up wrong. You are completely justified in disliking the story for what it did, but I believe it's objectively good enough that it shouldn't ever "earn" a fair dislike. There are plenty of fics I really disliked but left without a rating for similar reasons. Like you say in the next few sentences, this is—again—objectively a good story.
>environment outside the inn being genuinely not that dangerous
You (correctly) praise this, but all those elements do not exist in the vacuum. The reason WHY the outside is not too dangerous is that it's a part of Daring's mission to "solve" the mystery. It lulls you into a false confidence regarding the story's conclusion. It's this that makes it good.
>is a shit trope
Absolutely, and it's because of it being a shit trope that the reveal sticks. Making them cackling villains would ruin it, but an anti-pony conclusion where nothing can be done is perfect for this fic.
>Daring and Caballeron together on an adventure (...) to contrast their relationship with winning and losing
By now I can simply hear the box of Hand of Doom votes flying past my window.
>The Needle
I liked the first part of it more, the one where they explore the mystery, but the ending of this is far superior.

The basic questions are along the lines of
- Do the values espoused by the protagonist align with those of the show?
- Does the setting support adhering to those values?
There are plenty of stories where the latter is more important than the former, but I expect that if a story is consistently in conflict with both at the same time, it'll be unpony.

>accident
This would mostly be decided by the tone, and how likely it was that pony a would never forgive pony b for making a mistake.
>sacrifice
This would be unpony if the story railroaded that option being chosen. For example, they could not less soundly defeat the villain by not sacrificing anypony.
>living in constant fear
Unpony
>conman
Probably pony

The reason why a story being unpony is bad is that it takes the unusual setting of Equestria and the unusual storytelling style of RiM, and makes it just like every other default grim fiction style.
>>
>>43458819
>Scenario 1
I think that works well as pony depending on how far you take the disfigurement.
We had that Make-a-Wish kid show up as a pegasus with wheels. And the pony from Kugeltown or however it's called has a prosthetic limb.
Does the pony in this scenario have heavy scarring? Sure. A missing limb? Got that covered? Paralysed from the neck down? I think you can get some drama out of that, even if you can get one of Tank's little propeller things to help the pony move around.
Execution is all, I suppose. I don't think this is unpony by itself.
>Scenario 2
Again, sure. How does the sacrifice work, though?
If it's actual gruesome sacrifice, yeah. I think that's pushing it.
Is it a tearful farewell before the pony walks into a nondescript light and you can hear a soft piano playing while a character cries? I think that can work nicely in a pony mood.
I think even a cut to an explosion or a building/temple collapsing where it's clear the pony died? Sure, that could work.
>Scenario 4
I mean, the Flim Flam brothers have to get their funds for their machines from somewhere, right?
I can see this working as a community building experience. Now they all work together to rebuild and become stronger and tightly knit again. Now you can have a newcomer some years down the line come to the town and teach them all to trust others again.
>Scenario 3
That directly goes against canon, so you could play it off as an Alternate-Universe, and that already gives you some leeway as to what the audiences will accept.
As a re-imagining of the setting, I think you could make it work, as long as the ponies themselves remain optimistic in spirit.
I think that's the core issue. You can throw ponies into horrible scenarios, but will they still fight for Harmony and all it stands for? Ultimately that's what makes the difference.
Is the writing being earnest with the darker setting/twist, or do they just want to indulge in the edge?
>>
But how else do you write failgirl Celestia

I don't think the story is objectively good. The beginning was pretty boring, It does not have much of a hook (get a MacGuffin, spook). The only good characters are the two main ones. Its setting lacks substance: Atlaca and the ponies in it are just there, existing, and Cahuacan is a by-the-numbers Aztec spooky temple.
There are good things about it, I listed them, but I don't think they're worth the word count. I downvote fics partly to remind myself not to read it again, and partly because I know I would never recommend anyone else read it. This story pretty much consists of three parts to me: the interplay between Daring and Caballeron, the weirdness of the nameless days in Atlaca, and the ending. The first is good, the second is kinda medium, it has a couple good scenes but only a couple, and the ending is bad.
>It lulls you into a false confidence regarding the story's conclusion. It's this that makes it good.
I don't find that convincing. The story could've still had a bad ending that worked well with the incongruity of the nameless days not seeming that dangerous to Daring. We were all expecting some nefarious pony-snatchers because that threat was still very clearly established and supported. They could've fought against some demon and been eaten, there are a lot of ways to make that kind of ending better than the one we got. I think that even a generic the-good-mares-win ending would've been better, if unsatisfying.
The fact that Long Count isn't a cackling villain doesn't mean anything to me in the face of how unpony the twist is. There's nothing motivating me to consider it anything other than a cheap shock.

I think it has far less to do with the setting than character attitudes. Notably, while I prefer not to read the other replies in spots like this, while scrolling I saw that the second anon mentioned 'optimism'. And yeah, you could sum up a lot of "ponyness" with this one word. Except that it's not about ponies being cheerful; it's about their entire world functioning in a way that both enables and rewards them for being good. A big thing is that, I believe, for a story to be "pony", ponies in the setting should, by their nature, strive towards good, and the setting must have an implicit rule that, in the end, these good actions will turn out well regardless of possible bumps along the way. A good example is in that fic we're discussing: Do and Caballeron at last reason out that another pony has most likely been kidnapped by an evil alicorn planning to use her for blood sacrifice, and their response is to go out and save her. They acknowledge that they have no chance against the alicorn, but it's also inherently a part of their nature to save a pony no matter what, and so they set out to do it—even Caballeron, who's only a barely-reformed semi-villain but still a pony. Of course there's a range, but in a pony story, they'd probably succeed, and even IF they were to fail, it'd still bring the plot to a relatively better ending than leaving that pony on the altar.

>Disfigured
Pony.
All of these depend a lot on the execution and how the scenario is depicted, but given that pony A tries to "fix" things, the only way this one ISN'T pony is if pony A doesn't receive A's forgiveness by the end of the fic.
>sacrifice
Could be either.
If there is NO WAY to win other than making somepony sacrifice themselves, it's probably somewhat unpony. If the pony dies in a heroic sacrifice, it's most likely pony.
>Nightmare AU Ponyville
Could be either.
The setting is super AU. If the focus is on how the ponies are hunted and live in this "constant dread", this is unlikely to be pony. However if the focus is on how they work together to live their lives despite the threat, it's pony. Bonus "pony" points is the danger is resolved by the end or somepony is saved from the creatures, etc.
>conmare
Pony.
Well, depends on what the themes and the results are, but the lowish stakes make this hard to write as very unpony.
>>
>>43458819
>>pony a is permanently disfigured by an accident caused by pony b. pony a must learn to live with this, and pony b must battle between wanting to make it up to pony a, if such a thing is even possible, and not wanting to face the consequences of their mistakes, worrying that they'll never be forgiven.
I think that Pony B not trying to make amends because of fear of not being forgiven is too far. Pony B could be hesitant to try and help because of fear, or too guilt-ridden to make the attempt, but outright thinking "I won't do this because I won't get my fuzzy forgiveness feelings from it" is a step too far. Although I think it would be good to imply that as a motivation, and that's something the show got close to a few times, like A Friend in Deed implying that Pinkie was more concerned with being 'a good friend' than actually helping Cranky feel better.

>>the big villain can be soundly defeated, but only if a pony sacrifices their life to do it
I think this is fine, and there are definitely moments in the show where ponies throw themselves into mortal danger for the greater good, even if they don't actually end up dying.

>>the citizens of ponyville have a constant dread hanging over their heads. living right on the edge of the everfree, monster attacks are common, and devestating. every day is lived in fear that some awful creature could burst out of the forest at any moment and kill you or your loved ones; and these fears are not unfounded, as monster attacks are the leading cause of death in ponyville. foals are not allowed outside unsupervised period, and weapons are stashed in public places all over ponyville so any particularly brave ponies can at least try to protect themselves and others against the monsters.
This should be fine as long as it's definitely an AU setting. That's basically what a bunch of Starlight's alt timelines were like, so I don't think it would 'non-pony' at all, but it definitely doesn't match the attitudes of canon Ponyville at all.

>>a conman successfully scams several ponies. he is discovered for what he is, but not until after he runs away with the money. all his victims can do is try to recoup their losses.
This would depend on how it was written. I think the 'pony' way of approaching this story would be to have hope (even if it's slim) that the criminal will be caught and appropriately punished someday, and that it's a good thing the victims can at least band together and help each other out. Basically, I think it should be treated the same as if they lost their homes due to some tragic unforeseeable accident, with focus on the harm done and how to recover from it rather than the more human-like burning need for justice. For example, if the victims stumbled upon a deposit of rare gems and made all their money back and more, then the incident should be 'resolved' in their minds, as opposed to a human POV where we would still want to bring the perpetrator to justice even if the crime was 'erased'.

huh. wasn't really expecting that. i ordered the scenarios from the one i expected people to find the most pony, to the one i expected people to find the least pony, but it seems like you all found the conman one pretty pony. i was really expecting
>selfish antagonist who takes advantage of others for his own benefit and gets away scott free without even another pony getting the chance to spit on him, let alone take back the ill gotten wealth
to be VERY unpony. i don't think it's in the spirit of the show for ponies who intentionally do bad things to straight up get rewarded for doing bad. maybe it's just the relatively low stakes allowing people to look the other way? or maybe i'm just wrong about justice being integral to ponyness.

i think the takes on self-sacrifice being "ponier" if it's not strictly necessary is interesting, but i think i actually agree.

Since it doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet, consider dropping verbs like "said" and "cried" entirely, at least as you're using them. It's usually more interesting to describe an action with the character speaking, which disambiguates it and adds more details. We can already tell that the character doing the action afterwards was also the character speaking, and it's also obvious when she's not.

>maybe it's just the relatively low stakes allowing people to look the other way? or maybe i'm just wrong about justice being integral to ponyness.

How the ponies react matters, pic related. The important thing is that everything will be okay, not that every wrong is righted. Conmen are more pony because conmen exist in Equestria and bad ponies exist in Equestria, in the show and the events happen in front of the audience.

Some things similar to your first three examples at least at some level happen in the show - but always in the past tense. What's happening in the present is a resolution of those things, preventing those things from reoccuring after they were stopped, or recovering what was lost even in some small way. The degree of your examples are likewise more extreme than in the show. Ponies have injured one another at each other's fault, but permanent disfigurement is something so unique it's reserved for exactly one movie character as the entire basis for their existence and the disfigurement is done in a relatively "safe" way. Sacrifice occurs, but it is often rewarded/reversed(the character was ready to or would have sacrificed their life, but things didn't play out that way precisely due to their actions). Fear of evil entities happens, but personal loss and death as a constant by the citizenry is uncommon or only alluded to at most, the fear is more abstracted as loss of control and servitude to malicious malactors.

These things are BLEAK, and bleak is not FiM.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a pony fan, but this is the only place I can talk about this, I'm fairly certain. I recently saw this "Apple Sleep Experiment" reading on YouTube after beginning to see some horror videos, and while it was a very interesting watch, I really just want to give some complaints...

During the final fight, Applejack somehow recognizes Rainbow and manages to go on a schpiel about not being savable.
Did she somehow get MORE sane after weeks of no sleep? She already hit the "completely delusional" point, then somehow came back to being mostly lucid. After weeks of no sleep she should have been completely cuckoo bananas, literally raving and frothing at the mouth. She was heading that way before so why the change?

Further, in the ending, Applejack wakes up, is told of the situation, and immediately accepts what's happening and starts arguing with her? Like, bitch, you just woke up in a dungeon with no memory of what's happened, got told that you went insane and murdered dozens of people, and your reaction is
>Wow you're so heckin evil and selfish!! How dare you betray me!!!

I mean show a little fucking surprise nigga, not even five minutes and you're just..mildly angry about being left in jail? What, is this something that happened before? You don't remember GOING ON A MURDER RAMPAGE, but the source of the potion you're so sure about you solely focus on that? Maybe this will all be answered in the sequel, but regardless, it's a rather silly ending. So it was a bit disappointing after that rather nice buildup.

Anyway, that's all I wanted to say.

Well, so it would seem. I've been on a roll of "pony horror" even though I've never watched this show, and there's certainly a bunch of issues.

>Divine Swamp Fever
Nice idea, but the outbreak don't make no sense, these are slow dumb shambler zombies with a tiny lifespan who don't even start in any big number. I mean even if you are completely and utterly incompetent, it should have died out rather quickly. They should have probably made it into an airborne vector that spreads with every tree, rather than something that needs bites.

>Twilight's Eden
Seemed interesting, but the later episodes give me the vibes of that cringe ass shipper brained toxicslop where the "protagonist" victim really just wubs the torturer deep down while the BAD victim treats her bad because she's a crazy meanie :(. I can already see the stupid ending where the yellow faker is "healing" Twilight so purple faker bitch tries to take her out. I saw the same stupid plot happen in that stupid fucking anime holocaust gif.

Of course, that's all just presumptions.
>>
>>43459652
That means a lot to me. I love FiM and it makes me happy when people understand it better. Thanks for not sperging when I didn't use a pony pic to explain this, this was just the most direct and recognizable parallel I could think of in the same spirit short of anything that occurred in the actual show.

Some things can't be fixed properly or recovered by an episode's end and the show always treats that as "that's okay", because the characters reconciling over what's usually someone's mistake discovered or remembered something more important, and that's the thrust.

Both of these are Lovecraftian horror, the former follows the formula closely focusing on execution and the latter is more abstract. You can read the threads if you want spoilers.

When I posted about The Fog in the Mind's Eye last, I said it was a study in tension. If you can't read a fic without knowing its plot, it is about Applejack being stalked on her way home from Canterlot by a schizo who thinks she's the enemy. But I'm recommending it because of how atmospheric the writing is.

Fics with mares disappointing the mc?

>i don't think it's in the spirit of the show for ponies who intentionally do bad things to straight up get rewarded for doing bad.
For me at least, I don't think the 'spirit of the show' matters as much as the 'spirit of the ponies', if that makes sense. I don't think it's wrong to have realistic consequences to a story, in fact I think it makes pony joy and optimism even more meaningful. What I dislike is edge when it impacts the characters. I also think there's a lot of stuff in the show to imply darkness. Pegasi falling from the sky because magic got drained, as an example. Or Nightmare Moon being stuck in solitary for 2000 years. Or even just how the griffons live. I don't think 'happy endings for all' has to be a law of the universe. But it should be a law that ponies (at least post-unification) should strive for happy endings and believe in them wholeheartedly.

Basically what >>43459636 said.

>maybe it's just the relatively low stakes allowing people to look the other way? or maybe i'm just wrong about justice being integral to ponyness.
I would say justice is downright antithetical to ponyness in a lot of cases. Given the option, they'll choose rehabilitation most of the time. Justice (at least our version of it) requires impartiality and a kind of depersonalization that just doesn't really fit in pone society.
>>

>>43460049
>at least post-unification
That's a fun little exception. Fics where pre-uni ponies are all unapologetically evil but it still feels pony somehow?
>>
>>43458066
>Are hard magic fics rationalfics by nature?
No, rationalfics require the characters to act in a certain way to "reward the reader's thinking." Hard magic's usually just a lot of worldbuilding autism and one could argue that magic, especially the emotionally-fueled kind of MLP, is inherently irrational.

>>43458819
It's a matter of tone and setting. "Pony" is defined by idealism, hope, and optimism, while "non-Pony" will be bitter, cynical, or pragmatic. In your first example, a "pony" fic would center around Pony B's guilt and the eventual forgiveness Pony A gives at the end that alleviates it, while a "non-pony" fic would have Pony A becoming consumed by contempt and anger at what happened and being unable to forgive.

Similar issues plague other media. Star Trek has on ongoing problem between its supposed idealism and the cynicism modern writers love. Same with DC and Superman.
Personally, I don't put a ton of emphasis on "ponyness", especially for something like horror. The show doesn't do horror. Of course a horror fic won't feel like the show. It's like reading a fic about someone getting raped and getting PTSD form it and going "well, the show wouldn't do that." Of course not. It's rape. Why are you reading a rapefic if you want something with the tone of the show? Go read SoL oneshots.

>>43459503
>ritual that involves sacrificing a pony
That's a different phrasing. You framed it as "a pony sacrifices their life to do it", which is invoking the common plot point of the hero dying in order to defeat the villain, a very heroic and idealistic ending of giving your all to save the ones you love, if perhaps bittersweet. If you're talking full Moloch-tier shit, than that's something else entirely.

>>43459758
>this will all be answered in the sequel
I wouldn't bother. The author did that thing where he overcompensated for the negative reaction to the ending of the first fic and effectively wrote a fix fic for it.

I was just looking for an option on the site, but there is one ancient fic I wish I could find back. It must have been from before March 2013 because I was watching a video which featured it. I think it was about Applejack and/or Rainbow Dash venturing into the Everfree Forest to retrieve some kind of apple, a golden apple maybe? Now that I write this, it does sound Family Appreciation Day inspired. Anyway I was still only enjoying MLP ironically at that point, and because of the video I thought the fic was a joke, but after I got through the first chapter I realized that it was actually a serious work. Thinking back it was quite a comfy read, and I wonder how it ended.

2/10. (You) have weird fetish sex (?) by orally playing with Dash's belly button while watching EqG. I read this as "research" for my belly button fetish parody fic idea to see what the pros did. Leaving the fetish aside for a moment, the nuts and bolts were really bad. Grammar wasn't good and the paragraph spacing was atrocious. I honestly don't know how you screw that up. Dash's characterization felt a little off, but that might just be baked into the "X is your girlfriend" second person fantasy concept.

As for the fetish, it was strange, but more because of how little the belly button actually factored into it. The narrator didn't follow the typical rules and spent scant detail describing either Dash's belly button or the oral sex (You)'re having with it. Most of the fetish scene was centered around Dash nearly smothering (You) with her pudgy belly and thighs then with her actual belly button. Makes me wonder if the fetish is more about breathplay and bellies than the navel itself.

Also, I feel sorry for any navel fetish people. There wasn't a single fic I could find that wasn't either HiE or Anthro. Even my fetish has full hoof-on-hoof action going on.

>Also, I feel sorry for any navel fetish people.
I never really bothered to look up any fics (I, apparently correctly, assumed I wouldn't find anything good) so I wouldn't know firsthand, but this at least holds true for art. A large portion of art is DA-tier quality (a couple artists I check frequently stand out for being merely "okay" at drawing), and often full of really weird side-fetishes like parasite bugs crawling into the navel, or stabbing it, or fucking it like it's an orifice, or other violent/physically impossible acts. Foot stuff seems to have had a similar problem, but it's been greatly diminished by how mainstream the fetish has become, so there's much more good/normal art of it out there by good artists and there's just so much art that there's plenty of good stuff to subsist on even if there's a whole lot of low-quality shit too.
>Most of the fetish scene was centered around Dash nearly smothering (You) with her pudgy belly [...] then with her actual belly button.
To be fair, navel fetishism usually does extend to the midriff/belly area in general. I doubt there are many people who, for example, are really into toes but don't also like soles.

Question for the writers in the thread, when do you use First vs Third person perspective? Do you rely on one more than the other? do you find each suit different stories better?
>>
>>43467517
Third person is always best, first person fiction is often printed for literal retards from what I've seen.
>>
>>43467517
I like first person, but more often write in third person. I used to care about deep POV, distance, free indirect discourse, and keeping a consistent style. But I spent a whole year being unable to finish actual fanfictions, so I cut it out and use a sort of inconsistent vibes based third person most of the time. Sometimes omniscient and sometimes limited for example.
>>
>>43467517
The question is third person versus third person omniscient
>>
>>43467548
I like third person limited.
Makes it easy to dwell on the mind of the POV character without the tackiness associated with first person.
>>
>>43467559
would you say third person limited is still good if you're frequently switching pov characters, or is it just better to use omniscient at that point?
>>
>>43467607
If you're doing scene breaks nearly every time you're switching between characters then at that point it feels like you should just do omniscient, no?
>>
>>43467517
You should ignore >>43467523 because he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

The right answer is that it depends on the story. Some stories are told better one way than another. Third-person lets you make objective statements, both about reality and (if the narrator is omniscient) about what characters are thinking and feeling. First-person takes you deeper into a character’s thoughts, but everything gets filtered through that character’s perceptions. One of these is usually better for a particular story, but which is better varies. I’ve used both with success.
>>
>>43467548
Third person non omniscient POV is the superior perspective.
>>
>>43467636
3rd person POV/Non omniscient is effectively very similar to 1st person in my mind but you avoid having to constantly repeat "I" all the time and can move the metaphorical camera around more effectively than strictly what should be through an individuals eyeballs. You can talk more about other characters interactions and dialogue and it makes the POV feel more like a character than a reader surrogate.
>>
>>43467668
But sometimes you want to filter things through a character’s voice. Compare:
>Big Mac wasn’t gay. He never dreamed about cocks, and he especially never dreamed about sucking them.
With:
>I’m not gay. I never dream about cocks, and I especially never dream about sucking them.
In both tellings, we can tell that Big Mac is denying the truth. But in the first one, it sounds like he’s denying it to himself, while in the second one it sounds like he’s denying it to us (possibly sarcastically). The first one could be followed up by:
>But there were nights when he felt a powerful temptation. Since he wasn’t gay, it must have come from gay stallions who were trying to seduce him into their life of sin. Sometimes he succumbed, and, without intending to, he was suddenly in a dark alley behind a bar, kneeling, his mane entangled with semen and wickedness.
If you try to follow the second one that way, it doesn’t sound the same. A stallion who says this has something wrong with him:
>But there are nights when I feel a powerful temptation. Since I’m not gay, it must come from gay stallions who are trying to seduce me into their life of sin. Sometimes I succumb, and, without intending to, I’m suddenly in a dark alley behind a bar, kneeling, my mane entangled with semen and wickedness.
So the two narrative modes really have different purposes, and you really can’t just swap one for the other.
>>
>>43458609
Well, did you?

>sequel of a sequel of a sequel of a sequel of a sequel of a sequel of a sequel of a sequel
>first story was a Twi/OC romantic comedy
>now it's a drama tragedy
Are all "8x sequels of a comedy oneshot" doomed to be dramatic tragedies?

>>43466814
>your what
For the last decade, I've wanted to write a comedy oneshot fetish parody. Dash is sleeping on a cloud and the narrator spends 3k talking about her belly button. The humor's supposed to be derived from the absurdist exaggeration of a fetish fic where nothing actually happens. The narrator has such an extreme navel fetish the mere sight of Dash's sets him off on a lustful purple prose spiral.

I picked the belly button because it seems to be a pretty rare fetish that would be a little weird, but not so weird that the fetish itself is what's funny and absurdist. I was hoping seeing what the real fetish fic writers focus on would help steer me on the descriptions, but this one at least doesn't help me much.

>>43467517
I almost always use third person omniscient. The narrator can get into the character's head as much as needed to mine out all the emotion and drama, which are the big selling points of first person, while having almost no required restrictions.

First person's only really good for small, more "intimate" fics where you're really trying to establish a connection with the reader, dive fully into the head of the POV character, or as an "in-universe" thing.

>>43467607
It's not really limited POV if your swapping POVs. The point is supposed to be that the narrator can only know as much as the specific POV character does. Swapping POVs is just an omniscient narrator who likes staying in characters' heads.

This is an entertaining shitpost about a question that you've never thought about but desperately need an answer to: What if Twilight and Trixie were blimps? There isn't much to this. It sets up its premise, makes some airship puns, and finishes. It's brief but complete. Nobody would ever want this to be longer. But as it is, if you're into this sort of thing, there are some chuckles. 6/10.

Why do artists with great styles tend to behave in a manner which makes their art extremely inaccessible? Uploading it so some obscure corner of the internet like some Chinese website or a social media account on a platform that wasn’t designed for smart sharing. Then leaving it to random people online to dump it onto some art aggregation website. Also why do East Asians that make good pony art always do that sort of that and then only 3 or so mlp related images?
