I think the characters could have worked better but not while being stuffed into mostly comedic episodes that have nothing to do with them. Trixiebelle seems to have been better received simply because he had some screen time that allowed his personality to shine after his introductory episode.

The Kirin stuff seems to have been created just for the setup of Quarantine. But now we have Prof Kirin and Prince Kirin that would probably be more relevant from now on. It really makes me wonder if the split is a good thing or not. Stallion episodes lacked some lightheartedness over drama to make people care about the characters. And mare episodes lacked on structure and consistency. But on the other hand this is kinda what people want from each one respectively anyways.

Clean Sweep, Parcel Core, Arinos, and Friendship were all introduced with pretty light characterization (beyond their most base motivations) early on and used in their first episode to force the main characters out of their comfort zones, and then they were reintroduced in later episodes and we get to learn more about them and what they are outside of the original situation they caused. I expect that prince kirin will probably do something similar in the next episode or two. It might be a little formulaic, but I can't help but enjoy watching these characters express new ideas about themselves. It's fun watching the world unfold.
