Applejack's lies are rooted in her stubbornness, which itself is the source of her honesty. This is a juxtaposition which makes for a more complex character. This is true of all subsequent seasons Applejack as well. This is just not getting the conceit of the thing. The characters have flaws in their personalities that cause some cost for their virtues(Element of Harmony) or runs contrary to them in parallel in some way(without being opposites) and the thrust of each episode is often retreading this ground of presenting this conflict and then overcoming it(either through reconciliation of the divide or acceptance of the cost) while developing the world they are interacting with or developing and deepening the relationship between the main cast or secondary supporting characters.

This is true of all characters and is just more or less apparent or well done depending on the character and the writer/circumstances of the episode.

Rainbow Dash is significantly worse in later seasons, rightly seen as the most regressed character that had trouble learning lessons. I disagree on that. Just in the season 2 premier, the dilemma AJ is faced with is way more of a conundrum than what Rarity or RD get faced with. AJ is lead to believe telling the truth will tear the group apart and lying is the only way to maintain her friendships. Meanwhile in RD's dilemma the best way to save Cloudsdale is to stop Discord, so under every circumstance leaving the current mission is just the wrong decision, and Rarity doesn't have a dilemma at all frankly, she just gets corrupted because she wanted to take a shiny rock with her... even though she wasn't even taking it from anyone in the first place.
At least when AJ lies about something serious, like in Last Roundup, there's a pretty big reason why(i.e, she promised to bring back some money and ALOT of ponies are expecting her to win, so she's under tons of pressure to perform and come back with money), where as a big problem with RD's 'dilemmas', which probably contributes to why people thinks she's a jerk in later seasons like >>43459861 says, is that her dilemmas have her struggling with motives that are ultimately way more frivolous. Other ponies are expecting something from AJ, those expectations are often pretty high, and she feels pressured to try and reach them even if she really can't. But with RD episodes there's usually almost no outward pressure on her, and she's struggling to make the loyal choice when the only thing at stake is some ultimately meaningless thing only she cares about.

That's not what happened. Rainbow Dash set up pranks at the party and they weren't intended for Gilda, she just happened to set them all off. The last incident that set her off wasn't even a prank, just a disaster caused by her not trusting Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie wasn't the only one Gilda talked down to either, despite thinking she was the one who set her up, she said everyone at the party was pathetic and lame. Rainbow Dash even took credit for the pranks, but she still tried to make it about the other ponies instead and insisted Rainbow Dash was lying. I don't know how much more clear they could make it that the facade was over short of her... stealing something again? Rainbow Dash didn't even abandon her, Gilda just couldn't take her criticism when Rainbow Dash stood up for everyone at the party.

Celestia and luna were the wielders of the elements of harmony.

The m6 are the wielders of the elements of harmony.

Luna was cursed because of perceived under appreciation despite contributing meaningfully to the shifting of the cosmos and the mental health of her subjects.

Twilight similarly did not perceive celestia as being attentive to her warnings. Twilight drove herself harshly in order to chase the idea of the good of society. She did this in part for the approval of celelstia, but also likely because of an innate desire to do good for the world. This desire to serve the world lead directly to twilight taking on solitary burdens which caused her to neglect others, and in turn suffer that same neglect herself. Given more time, twilight would have continued to sacrifice in the name of service of the greater good, while continuing to become less comprehensible to the average pony and continuing to spend less and less time interacting with the outside world. This heroic self sacrifice would eventually give way to a bitterness in her advanced years, and potentially a great arrogance and hatred of the fools who do not solve for themselves the problems she solves for them, and who do not even know of those problems in the first place. This is the non-magical form of the curse which luna has suffered, for the same reason luna suffered it.

Twilight escapes this trap when she, unlike luna, realizes that the having of friends is a great blessing which she does, in fact, posses. Luna did not believe that here element-partner, celestia, valued her, and so did not believe that celestia was her friend. Twilight did believe that there was a connection between her and her element-partners, and so did value her new friends, and so MADE them friends, and so made them valuable.

And so, the protagonists and their relationship represent a direct antithesis to luna and celestia's incredibly stupid 1000 year old spat. The princesses are a question. The m6 are an answer.

Narratively, it's brilliant. It's when interpreted literally that it is a total ass pull.

It pulls Luna out from her darkness of Nightmare Moon and effectively functions as the most powerful homie hug ever there, brings harmony to Discord which puts him into stasis due to him being an entity of pure chaos, and brings neutrality and balance and harmony to Tirek by pushing his power back across the land to bring back equilibrium. It always seems to work in favor of harmony as a concept, whether that be friendship or just bringing actual harmony in a peaceful non-lethal manner by restoring neutrality and balance.

I got the vibe Luna was just extremely lonely and hurt after being on the moon for 1,000 years, and it turns out a giant laser of rainbow friendship and love struck her right in the heart and cut away the darkness in her. Especially in Luna Eclipse where we see how lonely she is.

So, twilight, after successfully excelling in a system designed to create failure, is approached by a goddess who stares into her eyes until she knows love. Twilight's tantrum ends, which implies that the antagonism previously described has, in any way, been rectified by the simple presense of celestia.

She then goes on to do everything in her power to serve celelstia and celestia's society using her intellectualism.
