Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

I saw an artist sketching quick base shapes and forms with a big brush instead of doing it with a tiny pencil, so I tried it. Is that a good method for building a drawing?
>>

I mean... you could just use a bunch of circles and rectangles as guides, a lot of artists do that

Look up ‘line of action’ , also think of the body as bean and practice on bending the legs in a believe-able fashion focusing on weight distribution. References are your best friend with dynamic poses. Best of luck!

Drawing in the TTGL eyecatch style is a lot of fun: getting to be really bold with the pitch-black shading and figuring out how to still show off details.

Just my $0.02 the mouth needs to be a little smaller and follow the muzzle more. You have it kind of drifting down on the right side. The left eye also needs to be moved closer to the muzzle line. Lazy quick correction attached. Someone feel free to call me a retard if there's something I missed here
>>
>>43508018
I think you're on the right track. The eyes alone make him much better, i think I'm going to have to try something else for the mouth. I initially tried an open mouth grin but that didn't look right so i tried just teeth and it somehow looked worse. The eyes, i keep making them too small. It's never really obvious till i see them done right. I'll see what i can do tonight

Well she wasn't planning on going anywhere right?!

I see what you mean now that I'm looking at it with fresh eyes in the morning. I think my brain was stuck between anthrosizing it to suit the human form it was copying and making it properly pony, I basically just drew forehooves for her bottom. I knew it looked off, but I try not to get stuck on things I can't get quite right and just move on to finish the drawing. Might go back and fix this if I find the gumption, thanks.

personally i just think the pose itself was asking for trouble. rear pony legs have limitations that kinda gut the squat nature of the ref out, the forelegs can kinda manage but its just one of those things.
i gave it a shot just to see how i could make it work myself

It's definitely not a normal pony pose, but I think it can be workshopped into something that looks better at the very least. Sometimes brain worms call on us to do troublesome things.

Since everyone was giving their two cents to your drawing I feel like I should share some of my thoughts as well.

I suspect you were too reliant on the image that you were trying to copy alone and didn't exactly consult any other references of sitting ponies (maybe you did but didn't include them in your pic.)
I have to say that it's impossible to copy said image without it looking weird - don't forget that you were trying to draw a pony with the characteristics of a four legged animal, not a human shaped one.

However, you can translate the pose into what it would have looked like if applied on a pony.

Example B is what I would have done - while it didn't exactly follow the image to a tee, nevertheless I believe it looked compact enough to serve as an okay translation.

Example C is also another decent compromise for the pose - it's a pretty basic position that ignores the perspective of the reference image but considering that this was practice, I believe it is okay to deviate from original.

Example D is my attempt on following the reference image - admittedly I don't really have much knowledge about perspectives to really tackle this with confidence so I struggled a bit with this. Nevertheless it's the closest to the reference while still following the pony rules.

It's okay to settle for good-enoughs and understanding your limits is something all artists should internalize with, but having the drive to carry on and the will to revisit your mistakes will definitely help you in the long journey.
Nonetheless, despite the glaring mistakes I still find the drawing endearing. Keep trying and improving, anon.

I think D is a really good attempt at the pose. Yeah I didn't use a phone reference this time unlike Twilight breading out which I used for Applejack. More satisfied of the pone of that one despite finding a similar pose of Applejack laying down but not curled up that had the forehooves different/wrapped around.

I was looking around for artists that draw ponies in similar human pose form and found this from Lerk. Not the same angle, but it seems like the legs are doing the same thing so I was gonna give that a go.
