the Japanese wouldn't have done a good job with character depth or worldbuilding, two of the main reasons why this fandom blew up in the first place. the vast majority of otaku culture is really the same few stale tropes recycled over and over again, and occasionally one person invents a new idea that everyone else then rips off. MLP is better off with western writing, although I will hand it to the Japanese that they probably would have done an amazing job with the art side.
