Rainbow on the other hand would probably see Spike as one adorer among many, she's probably had to reject plenty of ponies. It's hard to say who's approach would be better for Spike, it really just depends on if you want to cast Spike as the romantic softie (canon) or a loyal punk that doesn't give up on his feelings.Their dynamic has a lot in common though. There's definitely a parallel universe where Spike aspires to be a Conan-style badass and Rainbow is his number one inspiration; but I do love how in the show he's more of a softie, it's a fun dynamic with his dragon ancestry. Spike could definitely help Rainbow with pyrotechnics, among other cool and awesome dragon things.
