>>43537688One of the developers (slashbeast) pushed a bunch of garbage for X11 and disabled the way that most people used it and then vandalized the wiki to try to delete the ways around it. See his announcement herehttps://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2020-06-24-xorg-server-dropping-default-suid.htmlHe then proceeded to generally push mandatory systemd with a full environment as the only valid path on the forums and like half the threads from 2020-2022 where someone is trying to get something to run on a system that is too small for a full desktop environment have him trolling in them. I remember a thread where someone was trying to get something working, he showed up and said "you shouldn't do that just use Xorg and systemd", and when they told him that the thing they were setting it up on couldn't run that he said that the hardward shouldn't be supported. He was so obnoxious that he's one of the only people that was forcibly retired from the maintainer list, but the damage to gentoo's documentation and image was done and people never really cleaned his shit up so in order to figure out how to do a lot of basic setup you have to go to deleted pages on the wiki or random explanations on the gentoo forums where real gentoo developers explain how they (basically do things the same way everyone had been doing shit since like 2014 which which doesn't exist in documentation anymore). When you install X11 on gentoo you'll get that announcement to this day.
To be clear most of the actual damage to the package list was fixed, but the wiki isn't the same and the installation guide is a lot worse today than it was before 2020.
>>43537683>But before the X11 debacle it was constantly growing and looked set to become the #1 competitor to debian and overtake arch. You're delusional. >I do kinda see the benefit of not running x11 as rootI don't really. Not to derail too far away from pony but it's like the internet browser problem. Yes internet browsers are super insecure but they're also the program most likely to see your bank login. If somepony has access to your web browser but not the rest of your computer it's really not that much better. Sure it'll help if it's a server at work, but why are you running firefox on it in the first place then?Same thing with X11. What are they going to do with root that they weren't going to be able to do with access to 99% of userland? Whatever sensitive thing you were going to do is probably on top of X anyway so if X windows can see each other then the fact that they're not root hardly matters.

>>43541269>have to either be blindly dragged back or are inaccessible until you turn it back on.I don't mean to sound condescending but do you use multiple monitors (more than 2) regularly? Because that just doesn't happen. Once you get used to your preferred layout you know where the windows are, you know when you can shutdown some monitor because you're not gonna need it for a while without even thinking about it.Even then, when you decide you need some window from monitor that's currently off, I'm pretty sure even Windows has some keyboard shortcut to quickly move program windows over monitors>nonexistent monitorThat's the thing, it's not non-existent it's still there, it's just turned off right now. When I unplug it, of course the OS should move windows so they are accessible.and lastly:>keep invisible windowsI don't think the use case is that weird. I do one thing, I get hungry and want to watch some show or videos while eating (or any other task switch). I don't need monitors with editor, terminal or compiled application turned on because I don't look at them anyways. so I shut them down and after I'm done I turn them back on with everything ready to resume work. It's like having multiple desktops on single monitor.
>>43543328Interesting. When you describe it this way it makes sense.Well anyway on linux you just set up a monitor with xrandr and you can make it not update regardless of the physical monitor, so you can do exactly what you're describing. Most people instead try to add or use scripts that auto-detect active monitors and force an update of the display geometry, but you can just not do that. There may well be some janky freeware that does the same on windows and forces a virtual display area even if your monitor is off.

This could be much better. However it's still pretty ugly hack and I will have to handle that specific monitor change separately because I still want it to work normally otherwise. I'm not as much mad as I'm disappointed because I wanted to go full display port on my next computer build (heh like if that's gonna happen now) as it's the "open" HDMI and has better specs in general. But this is just pathetic computers were able to tell difference between monitor that's off and one that's unplugged for decades
>>43546680Have you checked the monitor's settings? There could be some power saving bullshit in there that causes this.

The only reason I found out about this is that I finally bought myself Display port cable to upgrade the VGA.

Given the recent changes to Dicksword (reintroducing government ID checks), do you think the board could use a FOSS chatting platform shill post? Like XMPP? I just want to see the board be rid of this plague and it'd feel like a waste to not capitalize on the brewing shitstorm. I'm a bit hesitant about this as XMPP, whilst technically almost on feature parity with Dicksword, still have a few kinks that lazy anons will definitely use as an excuse to not make the switch, or worse, further double down on their headcanon that there's no viable alternatives.>inb4 matrixMossad glowware.
>>43549980The anons who don't like discord have been using other stuff for years and the anons who suck off discord's dick no matter what will continue to do so.You're welcome to try to shill alternative shit as much as you want. Thing is it's not like there's any "official /mlp/ chat", different generals, groups, threads, etc. all have their own organisation and use whatever they prefer. I also know tons of anon who use discord as just a friend messager like a whatsapp for zoomers, with all the issues of network effect that everything else has.Ultimately there's nothing else that I'm aware of that has exactly the same features as discord AND is simple to set up and use. Matrix is godawful compared to discord (on top of being gloware). Maybe XMPP is better though. But you also need some way to host it.If you (or someone here) wants to host an /mlp/ XMPP server that everyone could use, in theory it's a plausible solution, in practice anons might not trust you and/or there will be drama and shit. Paradoxically, when discord does retarded people go "darn, corporations are gonna be stupid, what can you do" and stick around, but if an anon makes a moderation decision people disagree with everyone else will very quickly boycott your shit and leave.I am also not certain how well a single XMPP server supports the "virtual server"-like groups that discord has, which would let people create their own sets of channels with their own independent moderation, channel/room management, etc. Matrix spaces are atrocious in comparison btw.
>>43549980>Given the recent changes to Dicksword (reintroducing government ID checks), do you think the board could use a FOSS chatting platform shill post? Like XMPP?As >>43550009 said people that are stuck on discord will just keep using it.Best that can happen board wise is to keep discouraging using discord for anything that doesn't absolutely need private behind the scenes organization and keep pushing everyone to just make a damn thread on the board for it.
>>43550016>keep discouraging using discord for anything that doesn't absolutely need private behind the scenes organizationEven that is unnecessary, you can use IRC or Matrix or XMPP or whatever the fuck for that. People just use discord because they're used to it and it's the default choice. And in any project where at least a couple of anons need to coordinate, all it takes is a minority who insists on using discord because it's easiest and they refuse to budge, and a majority who is not too ideologically interested in having a fight, and the project will just move to discord by default even if there's also one or more anons who are opposed to it. I've seen it happen multiple times.
>>43550009>The anons who don't like discord have been using other stuff for years and the anons who suck off discord's dick no matter what will continue to do so.But this has to have crossed the line, right? Government ID verification? Will ANONS seriously put up with this shit? You won't be able to shitpost anymore. It's directly tied to your real identity and is all srsbsns now. So, in theory, if there's a silver bullet solution that anons can immediately and smoothly switch to, it should gain some momentum at the minimum. Any sane anon will ditch Dicksword. XMPP is almost there!... It's just that people will need to make some decision on how they want their group chats structured, each with their own compromises.>Thing is it's not like there's any "official /mlp/ chat"I am aware, it's not like there's a need for it; we have this board already. Like >>43550016 says, the board should always take precedence. Though I could imagine having a town hall chat room that's openly accessible might be fun, at least for a little while. It'd be like one giant town hall thread that doesn't archive with poster IDs (namefagging).>I also know tons of anon who use discord as just a friend messagerThis is more of what I'm targeting: anons using it as a way to maintain contact, simply because the other anon is already using it. As you know, this networking effect really scales and before you know it there's all these isolated bubbles, ultimately becoming private circlejerks due to the nature of Dicksword, draining activity from the board on top of fueling mass surveillance. I'm hoping the upcoming shitstorm will shake up the playing field, allowing XMPP to gain some momentum and let the networking effect do the rest.>Matrix is godawfulTbdesu I never tried it due to the glowware part, but good to hear; this eliminates it from the equation completely.
Cont.>If you (or someone here) wants to host an /mlp/ XMPP server that everyone could useAlready done :)One anon that I know hosts an XMPP server, and we've been using it as a group for a while now.>I am also not certain how well a single XMPP server supports the "virtual server"-like groups that discord has, which would let people create their own sets of channels with their own independent moderation, channel/room management, etc.Yeah, this is one of the missing pieces from XMPP. Technically one of the clients can do it, but it's clearly a quick stitch solution. There's channels within one chat room and group voice/video calls, but for some holy reason chat rooms setup this way is invite only, aka a circlejerk. A sensible work-around is to simply have multiple ordinary group chats (which can be configured to be public) addressed continuously, like art.mulp@server.org and text.mulp@server.org etc, but people might find this jarring.>>43550027>and the project will just move to discord by default even if there's also one or more anons who are opposed to it. I've seen it happen multiple times. This shouldn't be a problem if there's enough momentum for the alternate platform, I'd think. It's happening now because the passive majority goes "literally who" on the alternate platform, and hence stick with what they're familiar with.
XMPP is too atomized with its standards, clients and serversfucking worse than actually popular federated protocolsthere are better optionst. haven't used Dicksword since... 2021?
>>43550470>Yeah, this is one of the missing pieces from XMPPI genuinely think this is one of the main missing pieces from every semi-mainstream "discord alternative".The reality is that if you "create a discord server" (and Celestia how I hate that wording, considering it's not a server and doubtlessly contributed to the public consciousness just ignoring server ownership entirely since their discord """"server"""" is "theirs"), anyway, once you create your space on discord you get full control with centralised moderation, the ability to create arbitrary channels, multiple voice channels, permission controls between users, delegated moderation, etc. etc.I participated in a discord server for an online gaming group once (being strongarmed by all the other players in my group being discordniggers and being annoyed at me being the only one not in the chat). They had their dedicated purpose-created space, they created channels for organising individual aspects of the game, there was a channel locked only to the decision-making members discussing secret strategies to protect against spies, etc.Matrix spaces and these XMPP "grouped channels" and IRC channel groups all have one thing in common, and that's that they're completely independent and exist under the purview of the overall server administrator. The latter is also true on discord but only matters for ToS enforcement which people are used to on public platforms. But in a "just create several channels" bro situation, there's often no good way to point someone to "join the entire space" and automatically see all the channels; no centralised moderation; there's just no shared space that you can manage entirely and make your own.Otherwise, discord is literally just IRC + voice and video + laughably mediocre file upload and embedding. Chat-wise, it's trivial to replicate; it's the UX of owning and managing your own space that's missing from every major alternative.Oh, that and reliable screen sharing (that kids call "streaming" nowadays), somehow discord solved that while every other platform is still slow and laggy. That doesn't necessarily matter for the majority of chat servers; it's pretty commonly used for friends hanging out together and watching each others' games, but probably irrelevant for /mlp/ type servers.
>>43550523>but probably irrelevant for /mlp/ type servers.watch parties might we nice with that desu>cytube!desyncs, (Not Available In Your Country) and cuckbox blocking some IPs can get ugly at a larger scale
>>43550554 (me)>larger scaleas in "a dozen"
>>43550554Yeah watch parties are nice, but on discrod you have to have an account and join the dedicated "dicord server" first, so it's not really good for public parties.Cytube is a different thing, cytube requires a source to embed, all it does is handle syncing. If it desyncs it's because it's imperfect, but most of the time it works pretty well. But cytube does not stream anything by itself. The only time the usecases overlap is if you have a movie file and you stream yourself watching it over discord, but doing that crunches the quality since you're basically recording your video player and discord tries to ultracompress your bitrate to save on their own costs, so 99% of the time I'd rather take cytube anyway.
>>43550483>there are better optionsShoot.>>43550523>and Celestia how I hate that wording, considering it's not a server and doubtlessly contributed to the public consciousness just ignoring server ownership entirely since their discord """"server"""" is "theirs"Yeah it's evil genius type wording. That's why I refer to them for what they are: chat rooms.>once you create your space on discord you get full control with centralised moderation, the ability to create arbitrary channels, multiple voice channels, permission controls between users, delegated moderation, etc. etc.Is "moderation" and "permission control" really that important? Honestly I don't see the use case. It just seems like LARP. Just have one or two janny remove illegal stuff, I'm sure anons can handle themselves otherwise, like how the rest of the internet works. AFAIK Dicksword is the only platform with this strange moderation/roles obsession, everything else works just fine without it.>there's often no good way to point someone to "join the entire space" and automatically see all the channelsI think the persistent, contiguous group chat address idea will work. Just make the list somewhere highly visible. Otherwise the channels within one chat room feature of that one client will work.>screen sharingTheoretically that's also supported, but none of us have tested it yet. Low expectation on the reliability, as you said, especially once it scales to lots of participants.
>>43550577>Shoot.ehhh telegram signal email 4chan? idk I don't have many friends
>>43550579>telegramglows>signalglows>emailnot viable.>4chan?not suitable for maintaining contact with friends, aka the main use case of chatting platforms.
>it's another "autistic freetards don't understand that people may have different use cases than them and that software is not picked purely on technical merits" episode
>>43550577>chat roomsA chatroom is often a single chat, the point is to group multiple chats. So I say "space" I guess, which is also the Matrix terminology. There's mutliple rooms or channels within a space.>Is "moderation" and "permission control" really that important?Depends what you need. If it's literally just a hangout for you and three friends to shoot the shit and play vidya together, yeah, irrelevant. But for anything else, basic moderation tools are indeed very useful.I'm not even talking about roles obssession and restricted channels or whatever, but just for example the ability to have one or a few people that have the permission to create new channels/rooms inside the space, or to invite other people. IRC had roles too, you had voice, channel ops, server ops, admins, you had invite-only and invite perms, etc. None of the discord LGTBBQ autism but enough for basic moderation actions - though of course IRC has no concept of a "space" either so it's still per-channel. Unless you host your own IRC server and treat that as your entire space, which I've done in the past and it's not hard actually, unfortunately zoomers are allergic to /nickserv syntax.Like shit say you host a minecraft server and it's got three chat channels for different purposes and some guy joins and starts spamming goatse. On discord you just ban him from the space and you're done with it, on matrix or XMPP you have to ban him three times. And if tomorrow you add a forth channel you either gotta manually sync the ban list or he can come right back and start spamming again. It's not the end of the world but it's kinda the equivalent of having to fuck about in the terminal to fix your xorg configs because something broke, vs. simply booting your computer in windows or macos. And I use linux day to day btw, but for some things I just want to open the program and have it work rather than having to micromanage cross-channel permissions.>Otherwise the channels within one chat room feature of that one client will work. Most of what I describe could absolutely be done client-side. Including even automatically syncing moderation across related channels, even if it requires the client to silently repeat the same action on the server because the server treats them as completely independent. But the client has to be built damn well then and not just vaguely try to paper over it, and also everyone is then forced to use that client. And one thing which I think a client can't enforce is room creation permissions within the space. Either anyone can create a *.mulp@server.org room and then it's chaos as everyone spams room out of control; or the server needs explicit support for managing the "mulp" namespace and having one user and potentially a few other admins.
>>43550579>"there are many options!">ok name them>"uhh idk I have no friends"Telegram and signal and the like (whatsapp etc. too) are built on the model of being normie phone messaging replacements. They are even worse at supporting group chats than XMPP or even IRC, they often require phone numbers to sign up and then use your phone number as your username/contact, the desktop clients are usually an afterthought and they have even worse chatroom or space grouping support than fuckign matrix.>emailNot a chat platform. Don't get me wrong I love email, and people used mailing lists for decades to great effect, but it's nowhere near what's needed for a discord replacement.>>43550599The point is that discord's technical merits are real and I don't know of any platform which actually matches them.People's "use case" is 99% of the time "it's what my friends use", aka the network effect. This is well known and understood. The problem is that discord sucks from a privacy standpoint, so it'd be good to not have every community or chatroom ever hosted on it.But the entire problem with THAT is that there is nothing else that can match discord on the technical level, and therefore it's generally nearly impossible to get normies to leave because every alternative you suggest ends up being worse or more annoying in some way.
>>43550613>the desktop clients are usually an afterthoughttelegram-desktop is alrighjt
>>43549980I had a longer post but I'll put my opinions this way, please believe me I have no ill will towards (You) or any anons here. If you need my resume, I use native Matrix + Discord/Telegram/IRC bridged, Signal directly, a bit of IRC at times.>full-time "official" IM place for /mlp/ will likely be net negative for poniponi>temporary IM places set up for some projects say, marecon might be net benefit for poniponi, so I would timidly confine inner reeees deeply>whatever tools anons converge for those IM places will be reflected by what tools they're already familiar with>introducing new (to general populace of ponyfags) tools would have to bring near 0 downsides compared to current tools, solve problems they have with current tools, and take good care of network effect>people are accustomed to relatively high quality, availability and globality of tools which are provided free of cost due to VCs or dirty business practices; you're a relative poorfag who needs to compete, so I'd avoid forcing separate tools until they're ready>Matrix while a shitshow in UX wouldn't say XMPP is much better at least has a culture of bridging all platforms possible, this has downsides but is a good way to overcome the network effect problemPerhaps offering reliable XMPP and Matrix, if I may shill humbly bridging services for board projects which settled on Discord would be a good idea? Use your autism to fix the inevitable yet foreseeable tech/federation issues and you'll have anons from open platforms and walled gardens participating together. A small step for ponyfags, but big step for poni.

Had a poke around Matrix. The UX seems fine to me desu. If Matrix's UX is terrible, then the XMPP hack I mentioned earlier is just bait. So yeah, if people are expecting the same Dicksword chat room quality, XMPP isn't going to cut it at all - still perfectly fine for small group chats though. Otherwise, the only FOSS alternative that looks promising is Fluxer. It looks like a direct Dicksword clone, but it's still very new, released on January of this year. I think it'd be worth playing around with once someone gets a self hosted server running, otherwise some features are paywalled on the official server. There's no E2EE yet, but that doesn't make sense for a public chat room in the first place. One really promising planned feature of Fluxer is mirroring chats onto the internet, indexable by search engines, like a forum. This should have been the default behavior for any public community/project group chats in the first place, another major evil of Dicksword, so that's really good to see.So yeah, I agree with everything mentioned in >>43550916, minus the bridging part; to me this just seems like yet another excuse for anons to stick with Dicksword. If the goal is to let anons familiarize themselves with the alternate options, a much better strategy would be what >>>/g/109934204 said. Also found pic related while on the hunt :)
>>43552696>Otherwise, the only FOSS alternative that looks promising is Fluxer. It looks like a direct Dicksword clone, but it's still very new, released on January of this year. You know it's funny I keep hearing about "FOSS discord clones" every now and then and they are almost always immediately forgotten.Trying to think really hard, I remember Rocket Chat, Guild-something, uhh and I know there were probably at least a couple more. It seems like nobody uses them, people only know of Matrix, XMPP and IRC as alternatives.>There's no E2EE yet, but that doesn't make sense for a public chat room in the first place.I used to think that way too, but honestly I think there is some benefit when the servers are hosted by some third party. It raises the barrier to snooping from "just read the databases on the server" to "individually join every chatroom anyone has created on your server". Possible, but is very likely to get noticed especially if done in a systematic or automated manner, especially in smaller rooms where mostly everyone knows everyone over time.So it adds, not so much hard security, but a certain layer of trust against the server host. And it's also possible to configure such that older messages can't be decrypted when you join (Matrix does that, I expect any good E2EE implementation should be able to nowadays) so you can even be certain that if the host or anyone else joins your chat in the future the past conversations will still remain private.Anyway that's neither here nor there.
>>43552696gosh that ui looks so comfy. how old is that?and what is that, kek
>>43553681https://tox.chat/clients.htmlLooks like the client looked that way since its inception in 2014
>>43552771>raises the barrier to snoopingWhy are you even worried about this? You got something to hide?
>>43552696>The UX seems fine to me desu.Just basic message sending is perfectly fine yeah, it's hard to get that wrong, nowadays even IRC has good UX if you use a client/webclient with a login form and a clickable channel list.I've used matrix for a while in the past, I've organised a "community" on it (for a game with anons), and I've helped run a server. There was just tons of annoying stuff.>every client is electronbloatTrue for a lot of messaging services, but Element is actually fucking bloated, and being the official client is usually the only one that is up to date with actual features. The only other up to date ones are usually ones that are built on top of the Element codebase and so are doublebloat.>VOIP sucksAlso common for most things that aren't discord, but voice and video/screensharing is unreliable, Jistsi is cumbersomly integrated and video transmission is terribly unsmooth.>Lack of a "community" feature grouping channels togetherI already talked about this above, but basically if you want to have one chat for same general game chat and one for organisation notes or one for specific events or whatever you have to create independent rooms and then every new user has to join each room manually. If you're kicking someone you have to kick or ban them from each room manually. If you have in-game jannies that you want to make chat jannies you have to mod them in each channel manually. These are issues with many protocols (including XMPP minus the electronbloat issue), but there were also three MAJOR issues with Matrix specifically:>e2ee key exchange autism sucks BALLS"Message could not be decrypted" happens ALL the fucking time in encrypted group chats. I think they have improved this over time, I remember some news about this recently and it might have been more frequent 1-2 years ago than now, I admit I haven't used matrix so much in the past few months to a year. But it basically made encrypted groups near unusable because at any point someone might just be randomly unable to read someone else's messages with no clear fix whatsoever. The solution is not to enable encryption on group chats but IIRC you can't disable it once it's enabled, and it's not like there's any sort of warning that says "btw this will randomly brick users in your chat so don't do that :)" when you select the option. So I've seen lots of people enable it on their channels because encryption good right?, and deeply regret it.>the server sucks ballsSynapse is extremely bloated python shit and is fucking SLOW, hogs resources like a MOTHERFUCKER, and running it is just so much more of a ballache than running a chat server should ever be.They had a Go reimplementation called Dendrite. They fucking killed it and are now selling it as "Element Pro"; the open source codebase is in maintenance mode and doesn't get updated with any new features. So the only FOSS way to run Matrix is with the flaming piece of garbage that is Synapse.(cont.)
>>43554475>federation sucks ballsThis is somewhat related to the server sucking balls, because what happens is if you federate with some "large" servers (such as the matrix.org official one), your server will randomly end up peering some massive rooms with 50k users and it fucking DIES. I'm pretty sure matrix.org almost definitely runs their own Pro server to handle that, but as mentioned above this is now a proprietary offering. So then you have to defederate from some servers and you end up with a fractioned network. Users told to "just use matrix" register on matrix.org because it's the default one when they search for matrix/element, and then they can't join your server.I also don't know if it's my skill issue but I've also seen constant issues with room federation even among servers that were supposedly not blocked, and people seeing different "views" of rooms with messages missing or the room just being completely empty for them.I also don't remember for sure because it's been a while, but IIRC by default your server mirrors ALL media from all rooms it federates. Which means you're gonna end up storing dozens of gigabytes of random media and images from rooms that some user from your server happened to join somewhere else. This also ties into the server again sucking balls and being heavy as shit, but this problem is specifically around federation.I've used multiple servers whose message delivery took multiple seconds just because Synapse was falling over or they were ran by some small guy who didn't realise what was happening and was bottlenecked the entire server on federating and catching up to some unrelated room from a completely different community that gets 1000 messages/minute. Or sometimes it's not even clear WHAT the issue is, other that "synapse is slow as shit and my messages are taking multiple seconds to be delivered".Overall, the tl;dr is that matrix is enormous, heavily bloated, extremely heavy, difficult to run correctly, and they made a FIXED server and made it proprietary only and killed the old open source implementation so you're stuck with the Python monolith. This leads to users constantly complaining>I can't see this guy's messages, says "unable to decrypt!">I just don't see any messages at all from today, I thought the room was dead today>why are my messages taking 20 seconds to send, I can't participate in conversations at all>oh I wasn't in that channel, I didn't realise we had multiple!>spammer joined a channel and got kicked then shat up another channel, mods forgot to ban him from there too so now the channel is a mess>matrix is being unbearably slow!>I can't see the encrypted messages!>I can't see any messages from user X, I'm only seeing half a conversation!I don't know if it was a skill issue on my part but I've just never had a good experience on Matrix, whether running a server or using it on other people's servers.
Where can I buy Google accounts using crypto or something like that? I need one so I can use Colab for image generation.Obviously searching for it with Google won't give me any results, so I'm asking here.
