Even after all these years I still don't know what Serial Experiments Lain was about (and I never bothered to watch to the end because the anime bored me).

Or maybe it was the PS1 game? I don't know. The novel isn't very specific, it was like a cat-in-a-box scenario.
>>43522552>>43522714It's about lain, who is a computer program made manifest in real life through the new protocol 7 made at tachibana general laboratories by the main antagonist (Masami Eiri) who died and exists as a quasi god in the wired.Think of this as the C consciousness from STALKER meets the MCP from Tron as the closest points of comparison.From there she gathere more and more about the wired up until she realizes she is a program and breaks the barrier between wired and real life (kinda like Satoshi kon's paprika did with the dream and real world).The rest of the development of the lain world is a little wonky as they originally wanted to make a video game with lain, made a manga in the meantime, but then pivoted onto an anime before making the PS1 game which has ideas from the original lain concept and some loose connections with the manga.Overall manga lain is closer to PS1 lain than show lain as the computer program part of show lain is made clearer while manga/PS1 are a little more on the fence where she is more of a human girl.Even knowing this I don't think enjoying lain comes through getting what's happening, sure it's nice, but pondering the philosophy behind the artificial wired world and real life merging and tangling between one another as well as lain's journey through it all is much more fun than strictly going through the story beats. It's almost lynchian in a way.

>>43522903I find that in general anime like that really isn't interested in telling a story (or the authors kinda figure it out as it goes) and sometimes makes it a lot more obtuse than it needs to be.So far the only exception to that I found are either Satoshi kon's or Mamoru oshii's work where you can easily follow the core narrative but always get cool little details each rewatch.
