I do kind of like the idea that Chrysalis fell from space. In any case, the fact that she can consistently beat Discord suggests that she's something big and special, so having her make changelings ex nihilo isn't that far fetched.

Why not both? Chysalis' whole MO is using the disguise for just long enough to get what she wants and then immediately dropping it, so I can easily imagine that she needed the love from some pony trying to mate with her (as a pony) to quicken the eggs like how a mosquito needs blood.
If you accept S6+ then the changelings already have predefined families after that, so they might have been avoiding the changeling metabolic limits with a primitive form of love sharing by having families.

You know what I mean? Nulings, especially the ones that are or present female, should be more elfin and deerlike. Occ looks good but she only looks the way she does because she's a kid. The skittlebugs should have had either a lot more variety or a much less lion-like, bulky body masculine design.

Thorax looks good (everything else aside) because he's meant to look like a moose, and he does. But for lings that aren't meant to look like a big ol moose it's just weird.
