It was rather explicit for what's not an erotic book. I guess the author isn't called Alissa Nutting for nothing.
I wouldn't say it was very hot, though. There's tons of sex in the book. It's just that the focus of the narrative is teacher Celeste focusing on all the stuff surrounding her fucking a kid. Because, you know, woman author.
It's as much about the emotional and psychological aspect of sex as it is about the sex itself.
Speaking of which. what makes it stand out is the way the protagonist goes about the sex. Going behind her husband's back. Pouring herself into her teaching job just to be able to suss out possible targets.
Even had to fuck the dad of one of the kids to keep appearances.
It's an interesting view into a woman's mind, and engaging thriller. And unlike some other thrillers written by women I've read, I think the ending and fallout is perfectly paced.
So, yeah. Worth a read.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/463431/daring-do-and-the-quest-for-cookies

5.7/10. A filly Daring tries to capture the greatest artifact known to fillydom: freshly baked cookies. I feel like this one really threw itself away immediately. The author just lays everything out for you right at the start. It needed to be a curveball that gets thrown at the end. Daring goes on this deadly adventure for some artifact, only for it to just be a cute filly with an overactive imagination and a sweet tooth.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/463865/unblinking

4.5/10. Soarin takes a walk in a Canterlot park and encounters a monster. I don't know why i keep bothering with horror oneshots. They always suck. Not only is the monster unknown but it somehow lives in the busy park in the center of Canterlot and no one has seemingly noticed the gruesome murders or done anything about them. Funniest part was the [M] tag victim. Dude literally just walks right up to the monster and it eats him. A mouse sleeping in an owl nest has more self preservation than that random gore victim had. Soarin was also useless. Any character could have been shoved in this fic.

7.5/10. The behemoth came to Baltimare and Shining and the EqG version of Daring have to stop it. The absurdist comedy of this one fit right in my wheelhouse. What can I say? I'm a sucker for "ancient evil follows modern bureaucracy in bewilderment". The plot felt relatively basic, but that served the comedy angle quite well. Probably the funniest Daring comedy fic to me I've read so far.

>>43556198
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/134397/indigos-secret
It's in the review queue. I really like the idea of a dark magic artifact that goes "If you want to get out, you have to lure my next meal in", creating this eternal cycle of betrayal, anger, and hurt it uses as fuel. That ending where Daring starts the cycle anew with Dash works a lot better in post-Daring Don't canon where they're actually friends.

>>43558043
Last one I finished was Articles of the Federation, one of those Star Trek semi-canon "official" fanfics. I tried to read Device Free Weekend recently, but dropped it a third of the way in when the protagonists didn't immediately declare their billionaire friend completely batshit crazy and instead decided to humor his fucking Bond villain evil plan like they were debating a "social media is evil" Trolley Problem.

>It's nice to see that the report button works.
Sorry to bring up AI, but I think this could help for the future.
For those who report AI stories, what do you include?
I personally share the lines I find most suspicious and explain why. Since I'm a /chag/ retard, spotting them comes easily, but some can be hard to explain to someone who doesn't use the models. Obviously, it's easier when they were really lazy and left em-dash spam or obvious isms.
I also attach a GPTZero report to back up what I noticed.
Usually that's enough, but sometimes it doesn't work.
>>
>>43559646
I include the lines, pictures of the detector detecting things, and the fact that usually the cover is AI.
>>
>>43559646
I've been told they like when you quote obvious AI text right there in the report. That way they don't have to go hunting (which is especially convenient when only part of the text is AI). They don't put a lot of faith in AI detectors, but they're kinda like a second opinion, so it doesn't hurt.

>>
>>43559677
just because there's pedos doesn't change the fact that he's an AI faggot. AI faggots and pedos can BOTH get the boot. There's boots enough to go around, in fact.
>>
>>43559680
Why are you so obsessed with maintaining your sense of moral righteousness and vindication over this one guy who made a story with ai?
>>
>>43559677
Whether we like them or not, the rules have always been clear. AI slop is against the rules. Human pedo stories are against the rules. Both get deleted. Foalcon stories might be sick, but they're not against the rules. If you don't like that, you can advocate for changing that rule, and you can shun authors of foalcon stories. But don't pretend that that has anything to do with the fact that AI slop is against the rules.
>>
>>43559688
Hi Lives. Learn to fucking write.
>>
>>43559674
Don't change anything. AI use of them is really obvious and quite different from normal human usage, even for people who genuinely like them.
I doubt anyone uses em-dashes as the only method of detection anyway — it's more like the final em-dash on the slop when there are other signs.
>>
>>43559629
It takes practice. You want short, snappy sentences a lot of the time, as well as a lot of vivid sensory details and an unerring commitment to sticking with one POV.

>>43559646
>For those who report AI stories, what do you include?
I just said I suspected it was AI in the report. I've met a chunk of the Fimfic staff on several occasions, so I elaborated a bit more in DMs with one, advising him to compare parts of both that guy's stories in order to contrast the styles (a damning hallmark of clankers). It took some time for action to be taken because mods do not make unilateral decisions on actioning alleged slop stories.

>>43559674
People who try to accuse you of AI based solely on em dash and/or Oxford comma usage are retarded and not worth your time. The best way to avoid and shutdown allegations is to find your voice. I have mine, and there's no question my work is exclusively human-written.

I pursue a different strategy than most do, focusing on mismatches on punctuation symbols (ex: " " vs “ ”). Any given OS/word processor setup will only consistently produce one of them (all " " or all “ ”), and having the story randomly switch from one to the other multiple times throughout is like someone handing in a manuscript with two distinct handwriting styles in it and saying he wrote it all by himself.

I think of it as much more "concrete" proof than prose analysis because the implausible-but-still-concievable "I actually just happen to write exactly like the AI does!!!"-defense (which mods sometimes fall for) simply does not work here. Nobody would, say, switch what type of apostrophe they use (and nothing else about the typeface) only when specific characters are talking. It'd be a smoking gun that it's a mix of human prompt and AI output (unless the desc says it's a collab between two authors).

I also extend this principle to severely noticable changes in prose within the same story, especially if it accompanies the punctuation changes. Lots of grammatically competent snippy one-liner GPTslop suddenly broken up by a huge run-on sentence with very basic vocabulary, a couple typos, and a different type of quotation mark than usual, would be a strong indicator that the author of that sentence didn't write the more polished parts of the story.

At any rate, I [quote][/quote] the specific snippets I'm comparing/contrasting and directly link the chapter(s) they're found in, any author comments/blogposts I use as additional evidence, etc. and accompany them with an explanation of what stands out about these excerpts and why it's a sign AI was used. It requires more effort and time to do it this way, though, and I sometimes go as far as waiting for a couple more chapters of a story to release in hopes they'll have a better example of the "human" parts mismatching the rest of the story in the author notes or something. I've been burned by seeing extremely blatant AI slop get reinstated after initially being taken down, so I try to dot my i's and cross my t's ahead of time so that I can make a good enough case to stand up against whatever excuses the slopper will try to use to wiggle their way out of it.

https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/1145046/
Here's a guide on the punctuation thing. Even if pointing out more obvious signs of AI usually works, it never hurts to include some additional evidence whenever the author's prominent enough that the mods might give them the benefit of the doubt, or if they've successfully gotten stories reinstated before by lying through their teeth.

I tried asking last year and nobody remembered it, but I figure I'll try again...
I'm trying to find a fic I vaguely remember reading on EQD in like 2013–2014. The plot followed some stallion getting possessed by some evil(?) demon spirit thing that escaped containment under canterlot. I remember early on it made him kill some professor (who was apparently Twilight's favorite) and he was freaking out the whole time, and then later it made him go eat at a griffon restaurant because it hadn't tasted meat in centuries and wanted to eat some steak while possessing him.

I don't remember what its long-term goals were, but it was either "I'm not evil on purpose, I just HAVE to kill people to get power or stay alive or some shit" or trying to stop some yet-to-be-introduced greater evil. I only read the first couple updates so I didn't get to see where the plot went. I think the MC's dad was also one of the guards that had been assigned to the demon containment chamber (or whatever it was), but I don't remember anything important coming of that—he didn't die during the escape or anything.

I stopped reading around the griffon restaurant scene, and I unfortunately don't remember the name of the protagonist or author either. I don't know that the story was even all that good, I just feel like finding it again for nostalgia's sake.

Critique my fic idea
>a pony learns he’s technically a lord after following a paper trail relating to his family line for an unrelated reason
>he decides to use this to establish himself as an actual lord of the lands his family used to oversee long ago, along with the responsibilities that entails. Initially to the displeasure of the locals (and other nobles) to which over the course of the story he gradually endears himself to and befriends as he adjusts to his new life.
>while this is happening he is also investigating what happened in the past that resulted in his family no longer being nobles as it seemed like the history of whatever happened had deliberately been erased.
>>
>>43559906
Pretty solid, but you'll have to balance it. Definitely have to make him in over his head and vaguely pathetic and a fish-out-of-water for it to work.

I'm pretty sure Georg had a similar premise with The One That Got Away.
>>
>>43559910
>Definitely have to make him in over his head and vaguely pathetic and a fish-out-of-water for it to work.
My idea was to do the opposite since I thought that that was played out and boring. I would Have the MC be competent and effective but unpleasant as an individual. Excessively disagreeable, abrasive, inconsiderate, a prideful, a bit temperamental, resentful, lacking in sympathy for others, Machiavellian, willing to manipulate and hurt others to get what he wants, etc. it wouldn’t be as severe as I’m making it seem here. It would be mild. My idea is that the crux of that part of the story would be him learning to temper himself for the benefit of others and himself to he can actually live a fulfilling life and have friends. While from the other side the characters he befriends come to care about him and appreciate him for the good qualities he has the the good things he’s done in spite of his flaws, while also helping him temper himself.
>>
>>43559966
Yeah that's not enjoyable. That's like borderline rationalfic.

>>43559966

>>
>>43559966

>>43559968

>>
>>43559966
Sorry man, but if you want people to like the MC he has to be at least a little bit pathetic. Look at all the Mane 6.

I read a fic like this recently where Sunset comes back to Celestia with the crown and demands the throne and Celestia is like "Sure, here you go, lol" and instead of her being overwhelmed by not understanding how to be an effective ruler she was good at everything and did it all right and was always correct, even if she was mean.

It fucking sucked.
>>
>>43559976
Isn't a character with no relevant experience showing up to a community that doesn't want him and declaring himself their new leader, citing his family's historical status as failed nobles, inherently pathetic?
>>
>>43560064
If he's immediately effective and competent then no.
>>
>>43559966
>Excessively disagreeable, abrasive, inconsiderate, a prideful, a bit temperamental, resentful, lacking in sympathy for others, Machiavellian, willing to manipulate and hurt others to get what he wants, etc. it wouldn’t be as severe as I’m making it seem here. It would be mild.

>>
>>43560085
The worth of nobility is in its established presence and relationships with other nobles to negotiate protection and favorable trade relationships with them as well as representing the interests of their lands to a centralized government. Some fucking loser in a mid life crisis doesn't get to be an "immediately effective" lord. Without legitimate backing from the powers that be he's just the village idiot who seems to believe he's the local lord while everybody ignores him.

I've been avoiding engaging with this autist for the past ten threads but it's pretty obvious it's just one obnoxious faggot as well as being a very clear giga schizo, who's been obsessing over his made up moral righteousness over anything he thinks is slop. I'd just let him be, it's like watching a monkey in a cage

Saying this about a fic that was, in fact, AI slop, is funny.

The AI author in question decided he'd just go to the far more respectable DeviantArt, where it turns out his profile in question is full of nothing but AI generated art, usually involving/honoring Charlie Kirk.

Daring horror fic's now at 4k. I'm still not confident in my "standard" narrator's ability to pull off the right horror tone. I'm trying to start it of as a normal Daring adventure oneshot, then the shit hits the fan.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/460514/daring-do-and-the-inexplicable-artifact

4.5/10. Daring and Twilight discover a strange device and have to figure out what it does. This one suffers from perhaps the worst problem an adventure fic can have: it's boring. There just isn't ever any real tension throughout the story. There were loads of opportunities for dramatic irony and doing a "Writing on the Wall" drama thing, but nope. Everything just happens without any real issue or concern. There's a weird comedy tone to the fic, which would have been something, if the author bothered to actually roll with the absurdism of finding a perfectly intact and functioning neutrino emitter/detector and actually making the story funny, but instead it really clamps down on the funny. This is probably the author's fault, but Daring and Twilight also have nearly no chemistry with each other, as well.

>>43559564
I've always found action easy. It's when there's more than three characters in a room talking to each other that my brain melts.

>>43559646
i think one anon previously said he would dig up examples of the user's "real" writing that typically was full of grammar and spelling issues and contrast it with the clean AI writing.

>>43559906
Reminds me of the "Ponyville is now Twilight's fiefdom" comedy genre from S4. Is it a comedy or serious? If serious,

>his family used to oversee
>no longer being nobles
How is this resolved? If they no longer rule the land and aren't landed gentry anymore, then how's he able to reassert that authority? The locality would just tell him to fuck off since the Crown doesn't recognize his claims.

There's also the matter of whoever the current claimant is. Presumably, his land would have been given to another noble family in the area when their claim was revoked. He'd have to beg Celestia/Parliament/Courts to get that overturned before he could actually take power.

Now, if it's a comedy, there's a lot more leeway for the "whoops, I found a piece of paper and am now thrust into the role of a Baron" kind of angle, but then >>43559966 doesn't really work well in a comedy plot and you have to fall back to >>43559910.

Imagine something witty about 'come' in 'Comedy', here in
>/FSBC/

I am starting to get comfortable with the idea that this fic isn't... good. Mind you, I still think it's only slightly underperforming as a [Comedy], so actually reading it isn't too boring or unpleasant. However, last week's problems grow increasingly obvious, and it's hard to overlook them. To sum up how I feel about this fic, I am probably not going to leave an updoot on it, which is a pretty big "it's bad" flag if you've read any of my posts itt. But as far as mediocre fics go, this one is still decently fun to read, and I don't feel compelled to drop it. Does that make sense? I hope it does.

To not waste too much time, the #1 issue is what pretty much everyone reported last week. Whether you called it poor pacing or characters acting at random, the plot/relationship progression in this is a mess. I get wanting to make it a bit chaotic, but it feels as if our green OC and the other OC (the one called Twilight Sparkle) spend a week engaging in a wide variety of interactions that range from moderately hostile to wife behavior. And while the overall trend is them growing closer over time, the pacing is such a mess you can only infer that from zooming out and thinking about what happened all week. When Twilight flipped her opinion on Green, it really was a flip, not progress. The "relationship progress" chapters aren't enough.

I think the 'relationship' here is mostly a vessel for sex jokes and suggestive scenarios to fuel the [Comedy] god. This is subjective, but I found the funni in this fic continuing to be medium. And, like I said last week, the amount of [Sex] and allusions in this E-rated fic is crazy. It's one thing when there are several chapters written as if Twi and OC are preparing to finally have sex (it ends up being effectively a study session), but you also have stuff like Twi-mom asking Twi if the OC is using condoms with her. For the sake of a joke, mind you, but I think if that's the kind of humor you're going for, your fic is definitely a T. What are we even doing here otherwise?

Oh, and it's good that someone realized that Celly supporting forced marriages in a light-hearted setting in modern Equestria is a mess, and the writer deserves a mention for trying to fix that nonsense.
So, do I want to finish it? At this point, we're close enough that we might as well? I think there's a bit of a hidden cost in dropping fics, making the bookclub appear more unreliable. Especially when the fic objectively isn't awful or anything. But if I'm literally the only one still going, there's maybe no point in wasting a week.

I like how I talk about how Georg can't help inserting parenting or pregnancy stuff and boom, Twilight's mom is pregnant in this.
The prose is still good but this went from a comedy of errors to them suddenly being romantically involved and it feels like it skipped a step or missed a chapter where they went from accidentally sleeping together to wanting to sleep together.

Clean Slate looks interesting.

>>
>>43560898
The funny thing is on paper Green Grass is a decent partner for Twilight. Minor nobility, gets along well with her interacially adopted child, good with foals, likes books and learning and is slightly autistic. Like under normal circumstances if not for the whole comedy of error bit I'd be like "Yeah sure, it makes sense that they'd end up fucking", but that goes back to the pacing issue. It's written like a typical romcom.

Funny music though. Klezmer is like clown music.

Dishonourable mention goes to neo-changeling bitches. I don't care if Ocellus talks cute. Facebook marketplace ass Fluttershy with none of the depth or charm, ugly colours for a bug, and kindness and bugness don't mix. If I want bug ass, it's because I want to torture myself, and chrysalis changelings have the right attitude for that. If I want unwavering kindness and unconditional love, ponies like flutterbutter and candyass the peetzer horse have the shape, colour, softness, and warmth to compliment such a nature. And If I want rude shouting cute anrgy scottish bitches, I hope there's a Scottish gryphon girl made just for me.

Daring horror fic's at 5.5k, but most of today's stuff will need to be rewritten since it's shit.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/407474/daring-do-and-the-ancient-outpost

5/10. Daring and her apprentice go on a dig in the Dragonlands. This one feels much more like a SoL fic than an adventure. It's a "spiritual sequel" to the ancient weapon story and so also tries a twist ending with the "dig too deep" thing. Problem is, that twist ending means there's no excitment to the adventure plot and it just turns into Daring going on a boring archeolgoical dig. Would have been fine if it had that comfy SoL tone and feel, but it did not.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/396985/daring-do-and-the-wailing-mountain

7/10. Daring helps a stallion stop a volcano sacrific cult. This was another solid entry in the short adventure fic genre. There was some nice suspense and tension over whether the [Dark] tag would claim Daring's life. Only real rpobelm was the narrator at the climax. I had to re-read it a few times and still struggled to make sense of what, exactly, was actually going on with the portal thing. Definitely could have been a little clearer. Still, not a bad Daring adventure fic.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/387732/an-adventure-unknown

8.5/10. Favorited. Dash takes Daring on a trip back to Somnambula. Another fantastic standout. I think this is the first "normal" DaringDash fic I've read. Everything up to now has been weird porn. The writing was very solid and pretty tight, but the narrator just could not shut up. I don't know if it's just a "romance fic" tone or what, but the narrator just kept going on and on about every minute detail. Every eye position. Every wing flick. Every time Daring felt heat in any part of her body. Felt like I was reading a fetish fic at times with how detailed the narrator was getting. There was also a weird "pornfic prelude" feel, especially in the train scene, where it felt like the two would just start having sex at any second, with how sensual they were getting with each other, despite the actual shipping stuff not happening until the end of the story. All that said, it was still a really nice intro to regular DaringDash shipping. Quite a shame it looks like an itch I'll never get to scratch again unless I do it myself.

It comes off as though the author was trying to say, "Disgrace," she replied, which would constitute an error here. Otherwise, "she returned" feels like a failed attempt at truncating the sentiment she's throwing the sigh back at him, but that's not apparent—at least to me.

7/10. Daring hosts a hot, muscular stallion to help her get some equally hot liquid all over her face. This one was a classic comedy fic bait and switch. Pretty much textbook for the genre, but it still made me laugh with the tension over whether the comedy tag was pulling its weight or the sex tag was.

I decided to read this after the bookclub is over and I agree with all of the critiques. It’s not paced very well, the romance isn’t done well, the character writing isn’t very good, it’s not funny, and a lot of the plot is driven off of misunderstandings that don’t get corrected and that even if they are corrected the characters ignore and don’t change their intuitive opinions on even in spite of evidence that demonstrates that it is wrong which is one of my MOST hated tropes in story writing BECAUSE ITS ENTIRELY PREDICTED ON THE CHARACTERS INVOLVED BEING TO RETARDEDLY OBSTINATE INARTICULATE AND UNWILLING GO GO AGAINST THE FEELINGS OF OTHERS FOR THE CONFLICT TO BE RESOLVED NORMALLY AND IN A SATISFACTORY MANNER WHICH IS STUPID AND ADDS NOTHING TO A STORY THAT ISN'T ABOUT TEACHING A LESSON RELATING TO THAT IT IS ENTIRELY POINTLESS AND NEGATIVE!

I finished listening to the audioplay of Daring Douche recently. Does anyone know any other good (for lack of a better term) "jerk-questria" stories? Vaguely self-satirizing/meta-ironic, involves characters getting into problems due to low-IQ/impulse control/foresight, and just generally acting like unrepentant jackasses to one another? Doesn't have to be RGRE or horny the way Daring Douche was.

5.5/10. Daring fails to stop Ahuizotl's evil plan in Daring Don't. Pretty bog standard "flavor of the week" episode-based comedy oneshot featurebait. Wasn't all that funny but it wasn't terrible.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/152272/daring-do-and-the-celestial-correspondence

5/10. Daring and Celestia send "faithful student" letters to each other. Didn't like this one that much. It's supposed to mirror the pilot with Twilight but whereas Twilight's merely sperging out over some ancient story, Daring's actually fighting a monster who confesses to wanting to destroy Equestria and Celestia's still like "shut up and go make friends." What the fuck are you talking about, Celestia? Of course Daring's going to tell you to stuff it. I would, too.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/151225/words-on-the-page

3.5/10. Daring reads a shipping fanfic Dash wrote. Man, I'm going to be chasing that initial DaringDash high for the rest of my life, aren't I? This one was pretty bad in comparison. The grammar and structuring were rough and it was just way too short for the romance plot to really develop and stew like it needs to in these things.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/151053/daring-dont-want

3/10. Twilight's mom bitches about Daring Don't. One of those "flavor of the week" fics written just after an episode airs. Not a very good one. Just felt like the author's rant review blog post with a pair of horse ears stuck on top. The vulgarity threw it off for me big time.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/151260/the-daring-doers-quest-for-the-sovereign-crown

5.7/10. Daring gives Twilight a book and her lore while she's at it. This one's pretty strange. It was evidently the prologue to a deadfic, so the author deleted the deadfic and just turned the prologue into a oneshot. It's okay, but really lacks purpose. Doesn't even really feel like a prologue, either.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/150918/daring-do-and-the-straining-constipation

5.5/10. Daring takes a dump. Yes, that's it. That's the whole story. It's the first time doing this I said "What the fuck am I reading?" It was not a bait and switch comedy. I remain unsure if it was a fetish fic or not. Mythrilmoth was in the comments, so I'm inclined to think it was.

3k words

This isn't what you're looking for; it's not a feel-good story, nor is it the best depiction of Twilight's parents (who aren't directly in the story themselves, though it does revolve around them), but it's about parents who do love their daughter even if they didn't always get things exactly right. Really, it's one of the only fics I've cared to read concerning any of the M6's parents, and I just wanted an excuse to post it.

>>
>>43568826
What's the limit?
>>
>>43569574
I don't know the precise limit, but gdocs started giving me a "can't sync your changes" error message when I tried going past around 270k words (a bit over 1.5 million characters and ~1,050 pages).

Until then, I always thought the limit would be some astronomically high number, and in practice, the point where trying to load a giga-document would just give your browser a heart attack.
>>
>>43569603
That's why it's best practice to split longfics across multiple GDocs. My rule of thumb is one doc per chapter.
>>
>>43569713
I like using tabs for my chapters, but that works for me because I've never written anything longer than 100k.
>>
>>43569713
Yup. I ended up just splitting mine into quarters that still wound up being novel-length. Part of this is because I have quite a few fairly short chapters (1,100-2,200 words), and I didn't want to feel like Twilight with the stack of papers in S1E4 when trying to shuffle through 150+ individual docs.

One drawback, though, is the doc will start to lag when it comes to making changes once it has a high number of comments. I'll definitely split up longer work more in future, though I have no plans to write anything 20k words or longer after spending so long on my behemoth of a project.
>>
>>43569746
That was my approach as well, before I learned about the aforementioned size limit and comment lag!

Yeah, for sure. I actually ended up buying a new writing laptop recently, since my 9-year-old one was pretty much on life support. I went with a more traditional laptop over a Chromebook mainly for the versatility. I wound up getting a brand-new one for 50% off, so it felt similar to buying a laptop at regular price before clankers destroyed the market.
>>
>>43569867
Yeah, I got the Chromebook on clearance for around $100 and it took a bit to get used to but I only really use it for writing, so I've come to really like it.
>>
>>43569894
Oh, that's awesome. I mainly use LibreOffice to write first drafts, then gdocs for editing. My new laptop was deliberately lower-end, since I only need a word processor and a few browser tabs open at a time without it lagging or BSODing (which my old one was starting to do).

I have an idea for a fic where Twilight has to tell celestia something she doesn’t know, but within certain parameters. It can’t be a basic fact about a particular thing, and can’t be something she cannot verify for herself using the information she already possesses in her memory and logic, With the answer being something like “this pattern with these qualities happens over history and society for these reasons”. I'd expect it to be hard to work around the way of it being something that Celestia would just give to Twilight as a research project to check her own assumptions, though.

6.7/10. A nameless mook waxes about his love for Daring. This was the Georg one that has no mention of pregnancy or lovingly raising fillies in it, for that anon who cares about that. It was pretty good. One of the better "flavor of the week" post-episode oneshots so far. Does feel a tad short. I was expecting as the mook gradually buffs himself and becomes a bigger and bigger threat, that there'd be an actual long fight scene between him and Daring and he'd become like the secondary villain of one of the books, but everything wraps up before that happens.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/138706/the-lantern

8/10. Daring and her mentor go on a dangerous adventure to retrieve an ancient lantern. This was another pretty good "serious" adventure oneshot. Had some nice drama, tension, and a good twist at the end that contextualizes things rather nicely, as all twists should. Only negative was the unnecessary swearing. Kind of kicked me out of the story a bit. This was also the one where Gardez got bullied by the readers into adding a "happy ending" coda because no one could understand the theme of the story.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/104412/daring-do-and-the-dark-walk-home

6/10. Daring Do faces her most terrifying challenge yet: walking through the ghetto at night with a quarter million bits in her pocket. Hilarious premise and the funniest part is it's not even a comedy fic. It's dead straight. Well, it was until the ending anyway. That zigzag at the end into weird Tumblr ask blog comedy really hurt the story. Destroyed the whole "Daring is kind of an evil greedy bitch who might get what's coming to her" tone it had going on and knocked it down a full point.

Trying to sabotage the whole thing is petty and childish, but not even something worth being particularly enthused over given the relative importance of the whole thing. You can still finish your chapter if you want and we'll add it as a bonus chapter at the end of the fic btw (same goes for Bundle, but I never had a chance to tell him given he stopped reading my messages).

You sound less than half your age. We agreed on the two week time in the same forum post we signed up for the corpse in. Eh, there was never anything stopping people from sending each other PMs to do this in the first place. It was always going by the honour code, really.

Last corpse, I couldn't figure out why you took so long. But when it was all over, I saw what you were sent and thought, "Oh, that's why," and in my heart, I forgave you. But now, in a single post, you've made yourself look incompetent in two ways: You can't write, and you can't admit when you can't write. If you had just said, "I got writer's block," I'd forgive you again. Instead you tried to shit on the corpse. Even the CMCs would tell you that's a retarded plan. You're not a Jew, you're a yak.

I wanted to see if there was any point to reading this deadfic, if it was a SoL anthology or if it was driving in a particular direction before it ran out of gas.
Well, it is the former, The Twilestia progresses only to kissing a bit more often, and barely matters before the fic falls into the void. They are closer, though, because the point of the story is to deliver more of what everyone wanted more of from the first.
Courts! Celestia's was boring. It undergoes wild changes in this fic as Celestia invites Twilight to her own. Twilight and Celestia witness a lot of pretty scenery and lore. The song-well of Jannah, only mentioned in all of the other stories in the group is finally described here. What do all the revelations mean? I said before that there's nothing behind the curtain for deadfics, and this seems to be an exemplary case of that. It was all too big, so, nothing, in the end. Well, technically, the end is an unrelated short story about how stupid Rainbow Dash is. It absolutely does not bear reading.
Speaking of unrelated short stories, the Letters chapters are also narratively disconnected correspondence in which Twilight berates Rarity over her spinsterhood. The prose in these, especially Rarity's segments, is fantastic. You ought to read just those chapters for the entertainment value. I think the end goal here is Rarijack, but it didn't get there.
Luna is pretty great here, there are several good interactions between her, Celestia and Twilight, and she has a bunch of fun lines
>Where went that burnt out bitch, and from what gardened heaven did you walk out of, and shall I call you the Sun?
It is a shame that her own court still does not show up again. This is also the only one of the collection that doesn't reintroduce or even mention the Cynewulf's favorite word: symposium. Is that because it's nearly impossible to get here except through a story that does, or because it didn't run long enough?
Unlike most deadfics, I don't regret reading it, the story is carried by the letters, and by Luna's bestness.

3/10. Twilight and Dash go to an auction to bid on the first Daring Do book. This one was rough. Classic amateurish feel and structure. Really fast pace. Ending that doesn't make sense. Not a good story. You can also add Dash's dad to the list of Daring authors.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/134397/indigos-secret

2/10. Daring and an OC visit ruins to unlock the secrets of a dark magic book. This is the one that inspired my own Daring horror fic I'm writing. It was another stinker. Same amateurish tone and grammar issues plagued the whole thing. It was interesting, at least. I've never read a "badly written" dark/horror fic before. The plot's pretty dark and horrorish, too, but it just cannot overcome the bad writing.

5.5/10. Scootaloo and her mom deal with her abusive dad. Scootabuse, in this economy? I was shocked to see it in a Daring fic, but these were the wild west days of early 2013 where everyone and their mother was Daring's author. The domestic violence was almost comedy-tier in how over-the-top it was but maybe that's just the Scootabuse genre in a nutshell.

That's a really weird take, but your complete and terminal retardation is well known at this point. I suppose the existence of anything more openly yuri than FiM must deeply upset you in that it makes it harder for you to pretend canon gives your ships any serious support.

6.8/10. Daring braves a horrifying pit of quicksand to get the treasure. Another entry in the Filly Do genre. This one's a lot better than the cookie one, since it actually makes an effort to hide the premise and provide a good "imagination" reveal of what's really going on.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/96137/an-empty-place

5.5/10. Daring Do explores a mysterious ruin. This is another entry in the "SoL, but the author picked a bad SoL plot, so it's just boring" genre. Needed to be a normal adventure or some kind of comfy university archeological dig. Instead, it just dragged on, seemingly far longer than its 1.2k word count.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/59331/a-hero-for-daring-do

2/10. Twilight botches a spell and teleports book Daring to Ponyville, then Daring and Dash have sex. This was another stinker. The grammar. The writing. The pacing. Lord, the pacing. Haven't seen it that fast in a while. Daring goes from having an existential crisis about being fictional to getting eaten out in literally 600 words (I checked). Really bad. Do not read unless you like trash.

Straying close to the mythical red arrow of displeasure, in
>/FSBC/

I'm just joking; the fic is still *fiiine*; I'd never downvote something like this. But I haven't finished it yet, which is the first time this has happened to me in... well, quite a few months! Now, mind you, the currently ongoing anni is definitely to be blamed for this, buuuut I also didn't read the fic before the anni, you know?

Again, I have to insist that it's not awful. It really is just fine. Like a 5/10, I think, all things considered. I will almost certainly finish it this week or the next (when the anni is done). But what I did manage to read this week didn't manage to hook me at all, either. It's a fun read in the moment, though without any staying power or outstanding qualities that would make me want to come back.
So I will be cutting this post a bit short, both because I didn't actually finish it and because spending any more time reposting my opinions from the two weeks before this one is very much a waste of time for everyone involved.

The next fic is Of the Hive, divided in the middle like this:
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/133544/of-the-hive
>week 1: Chapter 1 to Chapter 6.
>week 2: Chapter 7 to Epilogue.

And because I have some extra room in this post, I'll also add that the fic AFTER Of the Hive will be Clean Slate, divided into three weeks.
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/71009/clean-slate
>week 1: Chapters 1-9
>week 2: Chapters 10-17
>week 3: Chapters 23-Epilogue
>>
>>43585158
Aw, we're not reading anything spooky for Halloween?
>>
>>43585391
Oh shoot, I forgot! Obviously we should do that instead. I blame anni brain and stuff. Clean Slate gets booped down the queue, then, and the question remains if we want to have the spooky club in 2 weeks or 3. If the former, we'll need a 1-week replacement fic as well, but I'm sure that can be arranged.
>>
>>43583535
>Fimfic has a hard 1,000 chapter limit
I've been around for quite a while and only learned this yesterday.
>>
That was okay, I guess. Large amount of sex aside it was still fairly pony. Though the highlight for me was all the kids ignoring Celestia to fawn over Luna. Funny that I finished it and Lazy River at the same time, which kinda has the same problem and also had the princesses being the best characters.
God help me, I'll go through the two sequels and report back.
>>
>>43585476
Also I think if I had to give an issue with this it's that it wanting to stick to its genre hurt it. The elements are there to be good, the prose is fine, the character fits in every archetype that he needs to, but the whole romcom comedy of errors thing doesn't work. He and Twilight are neurotic sure but they're also not dumb, all the misunderstandings would clear up way faster than they should, particularly since halfway through they start fucking in earnest anyway. So it's already a meandering slice of life by the end. Just start with that, or hook them up sooner, and it'd be less annoying.

I have considered it, but I can also combine personal experience with reviews to determine if it's a waste of time. That's why reviews exist, of course.

I used to watch shows with friends, stuff like Hunter x Hunter and FMA:B. A new title picked up steam on Netflix, Magi, it seemed neat. We were entirely unprepared for how often it would shove a camera into some girl's crotch for no reason. It had that voyeuristic exploitation at the beginning of Kemono Friends too, again for no reason. We ended up going to Wakfu and Over the Garden Wall after that, and didn't look back.
So when,
>there are scatterings of fanservice that feel entirely out of place in the overall narrative.
I initially expected to toss it into the trash because that entire decade is a black hole for anime. I didn't start watching new shows again until 2020, after all.
But then,

A cute story about Fizzle raising a militia to serve as Twilight's captain of the guard. Very closely tied to the show, integrating Fizzle's role with the EUP and ponyville weather patrol, as well as making the militia a bunch of named background ponies from Ponyvlle. None of them actually matter, it's only a story about Fizzle proving to herself that she deserves the second chance she was given.
It's just cute and nothing else, though. I was hoping for more. There's only the barest sliver of conflict in this story, at the end, provided by Fizzle's foalhood friends. The author doesn't seem to be able to write in Tempest's voice, which makes the story feel empty. Her actions line up, but it makes it feel like this story about her doesn't have her in it. This isn't a problem with the other characters, especially Starlight. I also kinda expect more from Tempest than assembling a completely appropriate royal guard militia for Ponyville for Twilight.
I liked the spellcasting prosthetic they gave her, though. It's weird and new, I've never seen anything mechanically like it at all, but it simultaneously seems to fit perfectly.
I also did not like her old horn fragment being returned to her. It's grisly, and thematically inappropriate.

7/10. Daring returns to her hometown to visit her dying father. From the second sentence in, you know what kind of fic this is going to be. That sort of pretentious sad-toned narrator thing to tug at the heartstrings while he waxes philosophically. If you're in the mood for a full sadfic, it does it's job, but if not, it feels kind of performative. I wasn't a big fan of Daring actually being a southern belle who hides her accent. Felt like the author was just forcing her into the OC role for his deep south "returning to the farm" fic. Couldn't even be bothered to set it in Equestria proper, either, and had to do "muh chaos magic makes the weather do its own thing".

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/70907/treasure

6/10. Dash and Twilight go on an adventure in the ruins of the Castle of the Pony Sisters. Despite the tag, Daring's technically not in this, as all her scenes are just excerpts from one of her books. The plot--the Daring book is based off the castle and Twilight and Dash need to use it to navigate the traps--feels underused and what is used could probably use a bit of polish. Overall, it's not terrible and the Twidash interactions are nice, but it could be better. Oh, and Luna's Daring's author. First time I've seen that. For the record, so far I've seen: Scootaloo's mom, Dash's dad, Twilight's mom, and now Luna.

7/10. Daring goes on a Livingstone-esque adventure to rescue a professor studying ancient pony tribes. This one fits comfortably in the lighthearted adventure oneshot genre. There's a few hints of its spot in the pre-Daring Don't "wild west", especially with Daring's extroverted personality, but overall it's a very nice take on the lighthearted adventure genre. It's good adventure, some decent (though certainly not gutbusting) comedy, and a surprisingly comfy ending that really tied things up nicely.

I guess that for anypony who can't vaporize him on sight, reporting him to the nearest royal guard element for disposal counts as displaying an element of distrust. But that level of preparedness doesn't indicate surprise.
>>
>>43592342
In my experience AiE falls into two categories
>nopony has magic, story isn't set in Equestria
>Anon is a bigger mary sue than an alicorn, author doesn't like ponies
Especially in a post EqG environment these categories seem to be all-consuming, for what are mostly obvious reasons
>>43592194
AiE stories have no canon or consistency because there's no common corpus, but if you use G1 as apocrypha then sufficiently nerdy horses should get excited and old horses should be blasé. Regular residents care almost entirely about behavior though so how it would be purely a function of how anon acts.

>These two voted-on fics aren't going anywhere
In theory, the ones who voted for Of the Hive could actually compare it to Integration and decide which one they would rather read. They are very similar, but not the same, so there is a case for reading both. It's weird because I didn't think Integration was good enough to directly recommend to the club, while Of the Hive is is a significantly less well crafted story even than that.

The club votes have been on such a terrible streak, lately. The next fic on my RiL was another Tempest guard fic, likely the same one mutli-reply-anon was referring to, but it is incomplete so I started reading Crisis on Two Equestrias instead. The first few chapter have been fantastic, and it's a real shame it lost the vote.

Back from the sequel. In this one, Green Grass babysits a griffon princess while everyone expresses surprise that Twilight isn't pregnant (because every single wedding of House Spankle has been a shotgun wedding). Twilight's mom was just pregnant and has twin infant foals that interact with the griffon princess.

At the end, Twilight gets pregnant. I'm beginning to see a pattern here.

Was better paced than the first, even if it kind of meanders (but it's slice of life so whatever), I maintain my opinion that this is far better when it's not the will-they/won't-they stuff. Will read the sequel where Twilight is actually pregnant now.

5.5/10. Daring visits her sister, Dash, for the first time in fourteen years. This one was utterly bizarre. I just couldn't get into it. The author tries to force it into canon, but there's just no way it fits Dash's reactions in Read It and Weep. Just absolutely no way she goes from that episode to beating the shit out of Daring on first seeing her. First time in a long time canon completely kicked me out of a story. If you ignore that, it's an okay story. Dash seems to really overreact, but the family drama stuff is still nice. It just doesn't sync with Read It and Weep at all.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/35943/the-most-valuable-treasure

6.5/10. While recovering from an injury, Daring recounts her backstory to her adventuring companion. A better summary would be "everyone in Daring's life acts retarded." Her mom's stupid for thinking that a filly with an adventure cutie mark shouldn't fulfill her special talent. Her companion's stupid for carrying a secret that will obviously damage his relationship with her. And her dad's the biggest idiot of them all for effectively abandoning her and never reuniting. It's a fic precipitated on characters utterly failing at the most basics of familial relationships in order to drive the family drama. It's not terrible, but damn is the drama poorly structured.

After the difference in tags was pointed out to me, I actually started enjoying GTG more. I think it was just a mismatch of expectations. I thought it'd be an adventure and I kept waiting for things to happen; upon realising it was actually fully intended to be slice of life, I started to read it like one, and stopped expecting or trying to wait for the plot points to resolve themselves or go somewhere in some coherent sequence.
As a SoL it's actually not that bad. There's enough stuff happening to keep it interesting, and there's a few plot threads being pulled on which make the life that's being sliced feel dynamic enough. And treating it like a SoL (dark) comedy makes some of the more absurd or less grounded stuff that gets brushed away feel a lot less jarring.

But moreover, this has also made me rethink ITCON. I mentioned in my complaint (>>43557070) that I felt similarly about ITCON, and having shifted my expectations about GTG I think the same would've helped there, too. It's really meant to be read as a slice of life, where a big plot (tm) happens in the background but the actual narrative is just the daily life and times of the Company ponies.
I still count that against it because ITCON is not in fact tagged SoL, but rather claims to be an Adventure, and so fully deserves to be harshly judged like the aimless and meandering adventure that it is. But if it were retagged properly, I think it wouldn't be a bad SoL story. I remember arguing with tunafag about it a couple months ago, where he said shit like the diary format, the PoV character shifting, and some characters falling away into irrelevancy made it feel "real", while I was saying it made the plot threads feel aimless. If you treat it as a SoL, where things just happen and you're supposed to enjoy the moment, all those things become a lot more forgivable: for a while the slice-of-life involved the doctor's apprentice whose name I forgot, and then life went on, the focus shifted and she became a background character. All fine for an episodic SoL. Same for the overall narrative structure - there's a bunch of episodes about clearing that first area with the rebellion, then a bunch more episodic vignettes about the ghoul infestation, then it goes into the imperial army arc, then the whatever the fuck white rose rebellion arc... It's all kinda disjointed but it makes sense as an evolving SoL.
Nor does every event in a SoL have to have a narrative significant for later, so chapters about some military action or other that ultimately has zero consequence five chapters later make sense if you treat it all as a SoL where the point of each chapter is to enjoy the moment, not to progress "the main plotline" such as it is.

And in this sense I do think I prefer GTG, because it seems to have been intentionally written as a SoL and is quite nice at it, while ITCON appears to have been an actual attempt at adventure that succumbed to Mitch having this kind of style, and suffers for it.
>>
>>43599860
Roggentochter, and I still disagree. ITCON is an adventure where the immediate plot is informed much more by what happened before it than what will happen in its future.
I think you'll have a lot of fun with The Princess's Bit, though. It's an impressive blend of the two styles and has another rockin' ending.
>>
>>43600006
Oh yeah, Rye.
And yeah no,
>the immediate plot is informed much more by what happened before it than what will happen in its future
makes no sense. First of all that's how everything works - you do things as a natural consequence of the situation you're in, which is a result of your previous actions. Secondly most of my issues are specifically about how things that happen before end up inconsequential in the future. Rye Daughter being built up as a direct assistant to the MC is gradually dropped and she fades into secondariness. The Spirit of the Pike Staff being revealed is kind of glossed over by everyone and they go ghoul hunting, etc. etc.

In my view the immediate plot is informed directly by whatever the boring mundane paths of the daily life of a mercenary company require, aka slice of life style. They go ghoul hunting, not because what happened before naturally flows into that plot, nor because it will have major implications for the plot in the future; but simply because the daily life of the Company, at that point, involved clearing more territory for their attempt at politicking.
That attempt itself was largely inconsequential, as the only thing the Bride's appearance in person did was establish the contacts that eventually led to them joining up with the Imperial Army, and set up the fact that she met Sawbones once thus adding some very vague setup for the ending confrontation far far in the future. It's also followed by another bunch of chapters of life in Dance Hall with the imperial engineers fixing shit or whatever before they eventually move out.
As an adventure this is glacial, most of the shit is inconsequential, and is not informed neither by what came before nor what came after. As slice-of-life, it makes perfect sense: it's all a relatively logical course of action for life in the Company. You're supposed to enjoy the chapters of daily life in the Hall not because they're building towards more plot, but just because you're supposed to enjoy the SoL interactions and vignettes of shit happening.

And so on and so forth, I can make the argument about almost anything. Like how Mrs. Cakes arrival does practically fucking zilch to serve the plot, or inform anything else, and itself is in no way informed by "what came before". Her only significant contribution is the contact with Equestria at the very end; everything else is absolutely inconsequential, even her minor involvement in whatever fucking petty logistics they do while attached to the army.
But what she does is add an extra character to follow around for SoL antics. You're supposed to enjoy the chapters of her getting used to life in the Company, baking shit for the mercs, and generally nosying around just for the moment of it, not because it's part of any sort of wider plot or will be of much (or any) relevance in the future.

Yes and no, but mostly no. On one hand, if you're reading straight out of the sinbin, then yes, everything non-pony will look like a pinnacle of the writing craft. In addition to that, the sheer vastness of content lets you curate your book experience to select only the stuff you know is worth reading, which can dazzle you with good writing.
But that's only because there are a lot more non-pony books out there. The better ponyfics absolutely match and outclass not just the average "real" book but the bestsellers as well. The widest group of readers enjoys reading garbage, and that is consistent both in fics and non-fics.

I'd like to discuss "Daring Do and the Amulet of Graveeda" with the enjoyer of Daring Do once he gets around to it. The story's strange; Bother and Klamnei made some choices I wouldn't have with the prose also.

There's nothing really wrong with arbitrary limits like imposing a maximum of one thousand chapters either, autists need to learn that one million words should be enough for most any story. Sequels exist for a good reason.

>I think that MLP fan fiction produces better works on average than any other fan fiction community.
I believe you.

>But did we produce better professional writers when people left us?
I'd like to be a professional writer, but I doubt that'll happen with all of the "AI" bullshit. I saw on my local news earlier this year a story about a woman releasing her latest book, and it focussed on her fucking social media presence and other horseshit. Ultimately, "professional" was supposed to imply a minimum standard of quality, but now people are finding ChatGPT prompts in their fucking textbooks, so it really doesn't matter. This reminds me of an article I read about the consolidation of publishing houses, and how most of them want people who will be guaranteed to make money rather than taking chances on new writers; this means promoting celebrities with ghostwritten books, people with popular social media accounts, and no one else.

>I mean if we're taking Creaturequestria as canon
Grim.

I mostly read old nonfiction. Oh, but you're implying I read much fanfiction anyway. Every time I take a chance on some random story from the front page, it tends to disgust me with its basic mistakes, and when not that it makes choices with its acceptance of canon that usually have me stop reading instead.

Anyway, you guys should read "The Last Unicorn" by Peter Beagle. His prose is beautiful, and the story's nice too.

I consider myself to be an above average author. Good luck even getting a job as a technical writer, however.

The left is clearly better, but comparing that to some HiE shit is cruel. You may as well compare an Isekai's plot to a Western Saturday morning cartoon from the 90s, or a DVD of Japanese hentai to a random Western animator. Seriously though, an acquaintance played some hentai—people paid for that shit—and it was just pathetic compared to what guys release on fucking Twitter for nothing; oh, and it was about the guy's old father who married a young woman, so it wouldn't be incestuous technically. The same guy loves isekai shit, so that's about all he watches, and he was telling me about some fanfiction concerning a fourth-dimensional traveller hopping between fictional universes the last time I spoke with him. The Jap shit is so low quality it's not even that funny anymore.

I see some issues like a reliance on dashes when not needed, and I think using sudden italics in place of quotes is kind of tacky, but overall I'd say it's strong. It flows well, avoids repetition, and it manages to convey a unique narrative voice without relying too heavily on gimmicks. Words like "now-King" or "unfoolish" and comments like "which is some consolation" do a lot to give the text flavour and personality. This page is basically just an exposition dump, but it doesn't feel like one.
It's also very good at weaving in double-meanings and/or foreshadowing with lines like "All flesh has value and is treated accordingly", a line which in context is used to highlight the lover's empathy and humanism, but out of context it sounds downright evil. Good shit if this character is going to have a darker, machiavellian side to him, or if the narrator thinks that to be the case.

>right
Some neat ideas, but suffers from repetition and stilted wording. I like the use of tildes to act as quotes for sign language, but bolding it as well is too much. I like the worldbuilding of how the thermometer is designed, but the explanation of it is awkward. It's first described as a "strange-looking device". An odd reaction considering that the narrator then states it looks like a thermometer. Not strange at all then, when you think about it. You'd need some reason for him to think that it's strange at first. Something like: "She pulled out a stick with some kind of flat pad on the end. It looked like a kind of weird riding crop. Then I saw the temperature display and realized it was just a thermometer." Or you can just say "She pulled out a thermometer with a black pad on the end." Basically it's failing where the other passage is succeeding. It's trying to use small moments like those to highlight just how alien the world is and how even something mundane like getting your temperature taken can be a weird experience, which all adds up to developing a main character with a strong voice. But you have to convey that information concisely or it just reads like bland exposition. A similar (although relatively minor) issue occurs when the author says "the batpony commanded" after already highlighting her "leathery wings". One should have faith in their audience to read that and conclude she's a batpony without spelling it out. There's also a joke that I think was just fucked up in editing: "That depends on the princess" isn't a proper response to anything that was just said. It's not clear if the joke is that Twilight would prefer to chew on his flanks, or if he wouldn't mind making Twilight upset. There are also little things that make it harder to read like "...reached down for the steaming mug. Picking it up, I then stood up and slowly made my way..." since that's really one action it should be one sentence. "I picked up the steaming mug and slowly made my way to the couch" flows much better.

(cont.)
I want to highlight that last criticism about the mug because I think you can clearly see where the author went wrong. Earlier the author clarifies that the narrator placed the mug on the floor, so the author made a point of noting that he would have to bend over to pick it back up again. This is good in theory, it shows that the author is taking care to have continuity. If something is put on the floor it doesn't just rematerialize when it's convenient, someone has to pick it back up again. The mistake is in realizing that what's a good habit for the author isn't going to be compelling reading for the audience. It's good for the author to remember that a human is going to be taller than ponies, that a movement like picking something off the floor is going to look and feel different than it would for a pony character, just like how different ponies are going to use hooves/wings/magic to manipulate their environment in different ways with varying success, and a lot of good can come from remembering those distinctions. But it gets old fast, often adds unnecessary padding to the story, and can even come off like you think the audience is retarded. This is where annotations can come in handy. Write that shit in extra paragraphs with a > or something to help you visualize the scene, and then erase it before publishing. And remember: punctuation is not just used to improve readability and appease grammar nazis. Punctuation is to writing what a musical score is to filmmaking. When used properly it isn't immediately noticed, but it will make everything you create far more engaging. A good comma is like a orchestral swell, building up tension, keeping you on edge, waiting for the satisfying release of a period. Learn to love your grammar and punctuation.

>First of all that's how everything works
I didn't write a long enough post, sorry.
Yes, most stories are like that. There are bad ones that are just a series of disconnected events happening, but it's normal to chain together cause and effect. This is not what I'm talking about with ITCON.
Compared to the bare minimum of a normal story, ITCON has zero additional foreshadowing. The bare minimum would be "the spirit is introduced, it will become more prominent later" and "the Captain gets sick, then dies"
To the degree ITCON has foreshadowing, it's almost exclusively limited to the characters explicitly telling you that they are taking action to achieve an effect, followed by that effect. There are cases where the framing device cuts even that out, where Sawbones is deliberately hiding plans from the Annals until they're completed.
In ITCON, the characters lives are almost exclusively living in the present, and then Mitch smacks them all with a plot device to move the story forward. I can see why you'd focus on how they live in the day to day and the way it presents this illusory lack of structure, declaring that it's SoL, but I am disagreeing because it is illusory. The story is very structured and the characters are experiencing an adventure storyline whenever it's not in the middle of a training arc, which is most of the time by far, because they are very regularly getting smacked. And yes, because they're living in the present, their motivations and the relative importance of plot events reflect that, which causes those things to abruptly change and get replaced when they are smacked. I've already said I like that. That doesn't make it stop being an adventure.
>They go ghoul hunting, not because what happened before naturally flows into that plot
This is a very silly take, because it is exactly the opposite of the truth. Their ghoul clearing activities are one of the most naturally consequential effects of the plot preceding it that you could possibly point to.
>inconsequential, inconsequential, inconsequential
No, all that stuff is consequential, just not far enough into the story's future from the point it happens for your too-rigid definition of an adventure. Those things are usually consequential only within the span of the arc, which would have been the span of one of the original Black Company books. And it's OK for an adventure to be slow paced, see Perytonia.

You are supposed to enjoy ITCON in the ways you described, but not exclusively in those ways. You have a lot more in it to look forward to as an adventure, in the planes they travel to, in the threats they face, in the war strategies an trickery they execute, than you would ever have in GTG. Because it's not just, or even primarily, SoL.

7/10. Daring participates in an archeological expedition to an ancient ruin that's 71,000 years old and has been rebuilt and rehidden countless times over its history to keep what was hidden inside buried. The progenitor of the "Yucca Mountain" genre and, perhaps, the most famous Daring fic on Fimfiction. I'd only known about its spoilerly ending and had never actually read it. Imagine my surprise that it's not only a pre-Daring Don't fic, but it's not even 6k. That shorter word count does wound it. The dread and tension doesn't have that much time to build.

I was also shocked by how relatively minor Daring's role in her most famous fic really is. She explores a bit of the tunnel, then spends the rest of the fic grounded with early radiation sickness, leaving the OCs to really pick up the slack. The biggest flaw, of course, is the radiation itself. For some reason, I had it in my head the WIPP was only 10k old. 71k is insane. There's no way radiation like that would still be around to kill Daring, even with the "ponies are more squishy to radiation" handwave the author tries in the comments. So, a horror oneshot is again killed by its own monster. The horror oneshot genre just can't escape it, it seems.

Magic immortal death radiation aside, I think the real flaw is that shortness. There's barely a breath between "Ahuizotl might spread a deadly ancient virus and destroy the world" and the ending reveal. It really could have slowed down a bit to heighten the tension and mystery of what was going on and make Daring's role in her own story more prominent. It didn't even do the "walking dead" phase of acute radiation sickness that would have been the perfect horror fic hope spot before the brutal ending.

Kind of a disappointment, if I'm honest, even if the concept is 10/10, but that's the fate of most hyped and popular fics, isn't it?

>end

I'm on the second pass of oneshots, then it's the multichapters. I'm full sunk cost now. I can't stop til I'm through them all and I get the monkey off my back.

>>43600185
I'm shocked by how little I care about the characters. Authors keep expecting me to care after about 4k. I keep thinking "This would be so much better if I'd already known this person for three seasons and was invested in what happens to them." It's the true fanfic curse.

>>43601335
Age of Wings and Steel is better than Patriot Games. Rye doesn't spend a third of the story in a hospital bed while the IRA fucks around in a bookstore. And I'll take an epic dragon fight over Canterlot as a climax over a boat chase in a river any day of the week.

>>43601979
Are there no proper nouns in that book? Why does the narrator refuse to use names? I already have a hard enough time caring about your characters, but now you're not even giving them names.

>>43602373
i make no guarantees I'll be fully reading it. My tolerance for fetish fics erodes with each one I look at.

>>43601979
As everyone else has said, Your Human and You is very much not decent by mlp fanfiction standards.
If you really want to compare against a HiE, use Pirene or something.

I have this problem where, because I am the most well-read person that he knows, my friend keeps asking me to read stories he has written. This by itself, I have no issue with. However, I cannot help but notice that all his stories are basically the same. Putting it into FIMfiction terms, imagine you have a friend who messages you to read his latest romance fic every few months. One is LyraBon. Another is TwiPie. Then another is AppleDash, you get the picture. Yet, without fail, even if the characters and set-up are different, they all manage to be the same meet-cute short beat-for-beat. I want to see him improve but it is really hard when all I can say earnestly is "well, his grammar and spelling is a little bit better than last time."
