Hello and Welcome once again to another “GameJam” (We’re using that term loosely this time round I’ll explain below). We start at October 23rd-ish, my time.I normally do these at the online cons, but since people wanted to do these every 4 months, this one lands on an odd date. Don’t worry, after the submission period closes, we’ll still have a little livestream we can hang out in and check out the games together! The games will also be archived at pony.games afterwards, so they can live forever. For those of you not in the know, here's how it works:1. Go to: https://itch.io/jam/mlp-off-con-game-jam-rebirth and join the Jam2. Wait for it to start3. Maek gaem in any engine you'd like.4. Once you finish your game, submit it on the itch page before the time runs out.5. When the timer runs out, we’ll check out the games together in a live stream. My current plan is to do a stream via cytube for the showcase, possibly on november 15, Sunday at 12 pm EST. Check the anchor for updates in schedule or anything related to the Jam.>What the fuck why so early?I’ll explain belowAfter that wall of text, let me present to you the theme for the Jam: Rebirth! This one was suggested by multiple anons last Jam thread, and I think it’s a very cool idea. The gist of it is taking old/unrealized ideas and giving them new life, ergo rebirth. There’s many ways you can do this:1. Re-use old ideas that never were2. Give life to an old project you never finished3. Re-use an aspect of one of your finished projects4. Finish an unfinished project5. Just go with the prompt “Rebirth” and do what tells youOr whatever comes to mind, I’m not the boss of you.NOW: Something to note is that we’ll be playing to COMPLETION! That means playing them from beginning to the end! Some of you may be imagining how long that would take. After all, last off-con Jam took around 5 hours and we only played games for about 10 minutes. This is where the next surprise comes in.Some of the more observant here will notice that I’ve been saying “we” and “us” a lot, the thing is... I’ll be having some help! Be nice! They’ll help me with the first half of the stream, I’ll try to be present for that but I can’t promise much. Our new co-host will play the first half of the games and I’ll do the second half. I’m expecting this stream to take 6-8 hours, This is why we start so early (check anchor for any changes). We’ll probably post the order in which we’ll play the games. So you can plan around that and not miss when your game is being shown off if you can’t make it to the whole thing. Check the anchor in case of any updates. (Cont.)
One more thing, you see that cute little filly in the OP? That’s Overscope! Time Crunch’s sister! She's coming over to visit and won't stay long. Time Crunch is not to be trusted with looking after children.Overscope is an overeager little filly full of great ideas! Though her enthusiasm often misleads her into letting her bite more than she can chew. She’s easily frustrated and very emotional when things don’t go her way. She tends to move from unfinished project to project and leaves her plans halfway done, if started at all, as she’s prone to burnout.Again, I claim no ownership of her. Do what you wish with these two.I wouldn't consider her a permanent thread mascot, I might just use her in the off-con Jams so Time Crunch won't be so aloneAny and all of this may be subject to change, so take a look into the anchor to see updates. Though once the starting date for the jam comes, most things will be set in stone.Links:Jam: https://itch.io/jam/mlp-off-con-game-jam-rebirthStream: mlpgamejamEmail: littlehorseappreciator@proton.meArt and character design by wapamario63. FAQ:>Can I work with others to make a game?Yeah that's fully allowed. You can do it solo or in a team.>Can I submit multiple games to the Jam?Yes>Can I submit unfinished games from previous Jams?Yes, but specify on your description>Can I use AI?Responsibly. You can use it as an advanced google search. You can’t use it to make your game by, for example, linking it to unity and having it write the code for you, or anything like that. Make your game as humanly crafted as possible.>Does my game have to have ponies?Yes. Your game has to have ponies for it to qualify, not just an obligatory pony either. Don't worry, most people don't have to worry about this rule.>What if I send the game in an email or upload it in a google drive folder? If you don't want to make an itch account, then you can. Give me instructions on how to run your game and we'll be golden.>Fuck you and fuck this I'm doing my own thingYeah, I guess you can, and we'll still check it out on stream if you decide to share it with us. But I recommend sticking to the restrictions. People find they're more creative when there are limitations
>>43612370but why is she painting Time Crunch orange?
Well what if instead of rebirth it was birth and we all made games about pregnant mares giving birth I think it'd work out!
>>43612370Nice! I'm very excited, been looking for motivation to keep working on an old project and this might finally convince me to work on it properly. Been constantly putting it off due to procrastination.
>>43612774She's painting her as a Phoenix for the rebirth theme. But they didn't finish in time. You can see what Overscope wants it to look like based on the drawing on the wall
>>43612397>Goddamn all my posts are spam apparentlyremove the https:// from links it usually helps
Slightly unrelated, but someone made a character card of Time Crunch.https://mlpchag.neocities.org/view?card=Anonymous/Time%20Crunch.pngI think it fits the character fairly well, but you're all free to imprint whatever personality you want into her
>>43612370Pequiñito
Does anyone want to form a jam team with me? I'm stuck on the game design part mostly. I am using Claude Code and Godot 4.7. Not sure what to do with the theme yet, my original idea was you start off with a limited resource to spawn ponies, lose them in battle and summon more with unique traits and equip them with items and stuff as the nightly battles get more difficult.
Let's make a game where you play as Rainbow Dash and your objective is beat cancer.
>>43613683Too soon Anon, too soon....Make is a two player game with Applejack.
>>43612397>>43612400sex with overscope also really looking forward to the jam. hope I can make something good this time.
cute sisters!
>>43612370Would anyone like to make a game like Keine's Expanding Class but with ponies?https://store.steampowered.com/app/3894520/Keines_Expanding_Class/>What is this?A fetish game where you play hangman. The words you have to guess are based on Touhou series, but you can disable the games or media you don't know a thing about, in turn you can end up with just classic hangman using plain English words.>Fetish? It's breast expansion, however for ponies I think it could also work with teats growing for each correct answer, butts, or maybe just the mare shifting her position with every correct answer, implying you're going to get lucky tonight.>Characters?Cheerilee, obviously, however Keine's Class allows for modding, so here I'd probably also give this possibility. This way you can have other characters give you the class, hell, you could even cater to people who like stallions.>Too much workI do realize that, and it's unfortunate, but I'm hoping to catch attention of someone who would be willing to give this endeavour a go, even if it's not for a game jam. At least to me, this game idea seems cool.
By the by, if you guys have any holdups about anything, we can talk it over. Nothing's really set in stone yet. At least until the atart date
>>43612422This left me thinking... How do you guys feel about using AI to code? I don't know fully what the general sentiment for that is around here.
>>43618073I think AI coding is lame as hell and there shouldn't be an exception to the no-AI rule for coding. Even if someone doesn't know coding very well, there are so many engines and plugins out there that let you make games without coding, so I don't know what the excuse is. Plus, this is just a game jam, so it shouldn't require the most insane level of coding anyway.
>>43617876I just started early cause I'll be traveling on the 29th-3rd. I might pack my laptop and see if I can get a little work done, Maybe.I got an enemy roster with terrible art now and little circle menus for the battle menu now.>>43618073I'm using it, but it's not flex on other people or something, I'm just trying to personally find something I find fun and put it together and using the jam as a goal to get something accomplished instead of just imagining what it could be like and never getting anything down. I know there's no guarantee anyone else will like it. I've coded by hand in the past. >>43618541That's a valid response. Should we disclose coding assistance on jam entries and what we used?
>>43618575>I just started earlyThat's fine, just make sure to stick around a similar timeframe to keep the spirit of sportsmanship (there is no reward for the Jam, it's all in good fun)>I know there's no guarantee anyone else will like itThink positively! I'm sure someone will!I consider ponies to be an enjoyment multiplier.>Should we disclose coding assistance on jam entries and what we used?If you guys wanna you can mention it. I don't think it should be a rule as it's gonna lead to witch hunting
>>43618073The coding part of the few hackathons I've seen in the last year was almost entirely AI. Some brave teams still wrote all of their code by hand, but the focus of those events seemed to be more on showcasing your idea rather than what you can code in a 24h marathon. For me, it felt a little disheartening to watch, though I can see no way around it, so maybe that's how it has to be.
>>43619472>I can see no way around it, so maybe that's how it has to be.The way around it is to just continue writing code by hand like God intended. No one is forcing us to bring more sloppa into the world, at least when we're just making things for fun.
>>43618073People who use AI don't know how to program, that's why they use it.And like >>43618541 said I wouldn't even have an exception in the rule. A game jam is supposed to be about what people create and having just a bunch of AI generated stuff is not really in the spirit of it.It'd be like having a drawing event and just having half the submissions be generated ones when everyone else spent time drawing stuff themselves.
>>43612899I thought it was a turkey.
>>43613069Heh. I made this. I hope it didn't offend you.
>>43618073I don't even know how to use AI to code.
>>43618073I think it's fine as long as it's something you could already code yourself
>>43618073Just don't say anything desu
>>43612370>2. Give life to an old project you never finishedOne of the previous jams I had to stop after a couple days and pull out because of work.I guess this is a good enough reason to revisit the idea.
bumpa
>>43620336Not at all! I don't see how it would've. It's nice to see people like the character
>>43613678That's an interesting idea. Is it an uto battler or does the fighting happen off-screen? Are you only on the management screen?
>>43624042
>>43625329The fighting is turn-based, there are different tabs for different tasks.
>>43613678That sounds pretty cool. But I can tell from that screenshot alone that you're so far above my level that I have nothing to contribute. Good luck though.
Just gonna keep working on FNAP and hope I can maybe get it into a mostly playable state. :PAnd considering I've already worked on it outside of previous jam time, there's no real reason to wait until Friday to work on it more...
Anyone who's an NEET will smoke the competition out of the water cause he's got the actual 21-30 days to work on it instead of just 4-6 days during weekends.Fortunately/unfortunately there's no more NEETs on /mlp/.
>>43630729Don't worry, the neets have no motivation to work on it that hard so everything balances out.
I have game dev experience. But I am in way too many hobbies these days, and I've left programming behind to work on fanfictions instead. So I will not be joining
>>43631162It's okay.Hope you'll find time to look at the games though!
>>43627004
So are (you) gonna work on a old project or start a new one with the theme?
