Anon, they deliberately draw attention to how heavy it is a few moments later. They're establishing that Sunset would win in a physical confrontation immediately before she turns it into a physical confrontation. I mean, look at how big the thing she's threatening to destroy is as well.
You're supposed to understand that even though there are six of them against Sunset and two children, it's Sunset that's the intimidating force in this scenario. Same as how as soon as Sunset lays hands on Twilight it's a shot of her getting dragged away with a look of terror while Twilight clinging to her foot is just a mild impediment that she doesn't even look back to address. In the logic of a children's cartoon, you're meant to understand that Sunset is the monster and Twilight is the plucky child protagonist.

Anon, they directly contrast her with fucking Nightmare Moon later in the same scene. You're supposed to read this part as "Sunset Shimmer is threatening to destroy a cubic meter of marble".
Also I hate to break it to you but you're a skinnyfat gymlet, sledgehammers aren't actually that heavy. If you've ever done exercises with a steel mace you've probably held larger weights at more awkward angles. It's not the correct way to swing them, but it's far from anatomically impossible. Like yeah I know arguably she's a teenage girl but also see above, she's not, that's the point of the visual language choices they make in these shots.

Sunset is already outside, Snips & Snails kidnap Spike to lure the girls outside with the crown. Sunset wasn't planning on actually hitting the statue anyway, that was always a bluff, but you are supposed to understand and Twilight is supposed to understand that she could.

You know, it's really common to pair golly up with glims because, you know, in-show interaction and all but recently I've been thinking that ol' baconator would have been the ideal candidate for a rolemodel for the path to redemption for her. Sunset has most of the flaws of Cozy Glow while also never actually giving them up - she's sort of the anti-glimmer where her intentions never really become pure but her methods do - so she could pattern actually functional behavior that the little psycho could actually follow. And unlike e.g. glim/luna the two wouldn't instantly hate each other by projecting their self loathing onto others because Sunset and Golly fucking love themselves.

It just seems like you're reading more into the scene than is actually there. Granted, it does seem like you've seen the movie more than me. But I'm also kind of thinking you're trolling a little.

To me, the whole thing exists solely because, after Twilight won the formal, the writers wanted Sunset to get the crown back so they could have a proper climax, and having her threaten to destroy a statue with a sledgehammer was the best thing they could come up with in order to achieve that. To me, that's silly. There's no way she's going to be able to destroy the portal to Equestria like that. They can even wait for the cops to get there while she tries to. But the characters act like there's a gun to their heads at that moment for some reason. All the visual storytelling in the world isn't going to excuse the leaps of logic that the story has to make in order for things to work out like the script says it must.

Pretty much the only thing we know about Sunset is that she's implied to be more powerful than Twilight is and we don't yet know how powerful Twilight is since becoming an alicorn. The show uses everything it can in this scene to convey her menace.

I would like to write a Sunset / Principal Celestia episode.
The idea would be around a 'Parents Day' at CHS wherein most of the Mane 6 are attending but Sunset skips out due to not having any parents (at least, none in the human world). Celestia, not wanting Sunset to feel left out, opts to act as her 'parent' for the day as she doesn't have any kids so she feels they make a perfect match, leading to an awkward day where Sunset lets out some repressed hangups with the OTHER Celestia on her principal

Kek yeah this joke's been made a LOT since the first movie, hitting the portal would just have it go through the mirror and hit Celestia in the face or something
I think it's generally assumed Sunset would target the corners of the statue or something, a part she can hit that would damage the statue and thus compromise the portal, but in general Sunset in the first movie did not have a solid plan at all and she was bluffing about destroying it anyhow so it's possible Sunset would have had no idea whether that would work or not and was just acting in sheer desperation.

I don't see how you see this. Sunset is playing with her food and as the movie unfolds and her plan unwinds, just gets closer and closer to forcing the issue with brute force. But (rainbows notwithstanding) there was never any doubt that she would win. It was just about the terms of how she won, and as things went on she resorted to a more and more direct approach until eventually she just says fuck it and grabs the thing.

She doesn't know about friendship and assumes that there's no real chance she loses until she gets hit with the rainbow at the end. Compare the ending of EqG to the S4 finale.

Mainly because of how her plans get increasingly more blunt and less organized with each setback. Her attempts start out with attempts at manipulation, but the online smear campaign against Twilight failed. Her attempt to frame Twilight failed and jeopardized her own chance to win the crown in the process. Threatening the portal not only failed but was never an option for Sunset in the first place - bluffing I think is inherently a sign of desperation because you bluff when you're dealing with a bad hand. Even attacking Twilight outright to rip the crown off her head was only prompted when they started praising Twilight in front of her and her jealousy reached a boiling point wherein she said 'fuck it' and took the most direct approach left available to her.

I think you're reading desperation where it's just preferences in how she wins. Sunset wants to have a fair competition and win. She can't get that, so she tries to have a rigged competition and win. She can't have that and so etc. culminating in her directly threatening Twilight, and then just saying fuck it and going for the direct approach.

But that's not desperation. Desperation would be doing things that have increasingly low chances of success as you get more desperate. Sunset knows that she's going to win when she takes the direct approach, she's just trying to win under more dignified terms before resorting to brute force. She gets closer and closer to winning with each attempt as she allows for increasingly crude methods, all undergirded by the fact that she knows that if it fails she can just take the crown.
