Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

I like old movies.
I like Rarity in large dresses and her in a romance or drama.
I want to draw more of her, but FIMfics are addicting.
>>
>>43643204
Small crit if you're open to it:
Something to keep in mind is that pony forelegs are positioned differently from arms. A horse's limbs sit directly underneath, so that they can better support the body, which means they're going to be more "forward" and not really to the sides.

I hate to tell you, bud, but each step of refining a drawing requires more skill and makes it look worse if you don't know what you're doing. Lineart drawn over a sketch will look worse than the sketch unless you know exactly how to translate the personality of the sketch into solid lines, colouring in the lineart will show you where you made mistakes in the lineart, and shading the colours is a whole new dimension of opportunities to fuck up. Each step is a new skill you have to learn.

Here's a drawing I did a billion zillion years ago, to demonstrate. Pay special attention to how bad the seapony's curls turned out compared, and how flat and awkward her shading looks. This is after an embarrassing number of hours trying to get it right.
>>
>>43639086
>>43639478
>>43643540
Forget about the shading for a while. Your drawings look bad because you're doing it all wrong. Grab your pen, decide where you line's gonna start and where it's gonna end, then draw it in one smooth, quick stroke. Singular, confident strokes is the key, yours are too slow, that's why your lineart's all wobbly.

Your proportions aren't wrong, so there's nothing wrong with your eyes or your sense of scale. Practise smooth strokes first, and if you're not satisfied with what you produce after that, copy someone you do like, and if you can't copy it exactly, think long and hard about why yours looks wrong. Figure it out with your brain, don't just draw aimlessly, or you'll only learn bad habits.
>>
>>43643241
It will kill me to do so, but I will try to practice-draw the pony shoulder-joints to be more accurate.
It's just *so* visually convenient to put the "shoulders" on the sides in certain poses. Maybe I just need to get more creative.
>>
>>43643528
>>43643582
Well, I think it’s still too early to be drawing any conclusions.
I haven’t even been drawing for half a year yet.
At the very least, it’s fun to draw, and I love it.
>>
>>43643646
I'm not saying you can't do it, just that it gets harder the more stuff you add. For half a year, your work is stellar, and it is of course always up to you to decide how much you want to challenge yourself and when. Congratulations on enjoying drawing, by the way, for me it's like pulling teeth.

Well, the principle is the same even if you're using a mouse, or a trackpad or whatever, but you'll be at a handicap without pressure sensitivity, and you may need to turn up your stabiliser.
>>
>>43643680

Finding

Considering drawing more frames of this since I'm easily amused.
>>
>>43641346
Another question I have is whether I need some kind of background or basic knowledge, or if just doing what you said would be enough
>>
>>43644791
As far as basic knowledge is concerned: for outlines you typically just want to use a slightly darker color than the base color for the pony you're drawing i like to make the face, duplicate it and make it white then erase oval holes in the face for eyes. That way i can make a different layer for each eye, move the eyes, change their size and create different eyebrows and cheek bulges for different facial expressions. It makes good practice drawing your pony going through each expression
>>
>>43644853
>for outlines you typically just want to use a slightly darker color than the base color for the pony you're drawing
The problem with this is that you've gotta deal with shadows and highlights. I typically make the outlines substantially darker than the midtone color, dark enough that it still serves as an outline for the shadowed parts. (I DON'T usually use a darkened version of the shadow color itself, because that will usually be a different color from the coat. But sometimes I can. It just depends on the picture.)
>>
>>43644949
I feel Shadows and highlights are a bit more advanced for someone who is getting started. Hell, I've done very little beyond linework and coloring to create show style work. It's kinda up to the artist to see how they progress with shading when they decide they're ready to tackle more complex work

You won't work it out instantly. All you can do is keep trying. And maybe look up instructions on how to draw with a mouse specifically, because I don't know anything about that.
>>
>>43644963
Sure, but the question of line colors is likewise not really something that a beginner has to worry about. It's an overly specific thing

I want to call bullshit on that. But I'm too desperate.
>>
>>43646336
NtA, but I think copying without tracing will probably get you there faster. At least it'll get you to actively think about what you're doing wrong, and why your drawings don't look like the ones you're copying.
>>
>>43645765
i'm a beginner and i made that shit trixie in the bottom right, and then a more skilled artist drew aj with a gun (in like 3 mins) because first some added AJ board as the first thing on the board (i added trixie as the second thing) so then I added some bullets being stopped by magic and imagined the board being like a battlefield of trixie vs aj with a wall/barbed wire diagonally and charging towards each other but was too lazy to draw it and also i suck

I did years ago and answer was always set a good value of smoothening or do vector stuff/line tool.
For a long time my only way to make something precise is to vector my sketchs, it works fine buuut I don't want it to be the "only" way to make decent stuff.

I assume you drew all of these using the quick, smooth line method, because they look less squiggly than your first drawing, but you need to either draw your lines even quicker, or turn up your stabilizer. After that, it's just a matter of practise.

In my opinion the main culprit is the short neck and human pose that the shouldered forelegs give.

I drew a redline where I moved the whole chest down and thus elongated the neck, and made the forelegs start more to the bottom of the chest. I also bent the forelegs and gave them a bunch of horse joints.
This solution does however lower her pose, and takes away both the "Forelegs straight out" and "showing the WHOLE chest" thing you had going. It might also mean a more frugal view of the teats, because of the angle.
Those are all still possible to do, but then I'd have retained the "chest legs" and the long neck, which would move the head way up. Alternatively you could make her neck and head craned down towards you, which you'd have to signal through a very big face form the perspective foreshortening, as well as maybe some shadows hinting that there is a lot of bent down neck behind that big face.
Remembering pony anatomy and maybe drawing a small version of this pose in full profile might help you visualize what's going on.
Or something like that, I'm not terribly good at this either.
>>
>>43653030
NTA, but I find this informative.
I was about to say this too:
>Remembering pony anatomy and maybe drawing a small version of this pose in full profile might help you visualize what's going on.

>>43652671
Think like you are a 3D renderer.
>picrel
Learning from a 100 failed sketches is easier than fixing 1 final piece. Aggressively pursue failure, and learn from that failure to fail at ever-smaller details.
(I should take my own advice!)
>>
Anypony has advice on drawing Rarity's mane in different styles? rn I am trying to draw her mane being absurdly long, but also trying to incorporate her signature coils kind of ruin the look. Do I just stick with drawing plain long wavy hair?
Would be nice to have a collage of all mane styles to ref and practice.
