How much did it actually hurt the fandom?
>>
>>43634765
It didn't hurt the fandom. It hurt the larpers.
>>
I think realistically the episode itself wasn't too harmful, it was Equestria Girls and waiting 9 months for new episodes that started to really make a mess of things. The show didn't get to a 'six months on, six months off' schedule until after season five and by then the damage was done.
>>
>>43634765
I love those wings so fucking much bros it's unreal...

I think Twilight might be like, the perfect mare. Seriously, she's like pony Jesus.
>>
Well ask yourself how relevant MLP is now compared to back then and there's your answer
>>43634809
I didn't know Faust was a larper
>>
>>43635134
The fandom lost relevancy because it was a fad. It blew up in popularity so people joined in to see what it was all about. Then they were either bullied out of liking it by their peers or their heart just wasn't in it fully to begin with. It has nothing to do with Twilight becoming an alicorn.
>>
>>43635215
That would imply the show stayed consistent throughout its entire run, which it has not.
>>
>>43635243
The show consistently had good episodes and bad episodes through all 9 seasons. The animation quality consistently improved. Pinkie Pie was consistently an annoying twat that needs to shut up. There is nothing special about G4 that makes it immune to the nature of creativity. Same as every other IP that has ever existed. Which again, Twilight becoming an alicorn has nothing to do with.

Animation/character design got a lot worse in later seasons
Also I love how you preemptively admit that you're wrong lmao. Like even when ponies are posting bait they still get filtered by FPK
>Which again, Twilight becoming an alicorn has nothing to do with.
I actually agree with this for the most part but it was a HUGE fuckup in terms of merchandising and that directly contributed to killing the show and it's future. Not the worst thing that did but still quite bad.
>>
>>43635297
I don't see where I'm admitting being wrong? If anyone says any collection of media is perfect from start to finish they are just lying to themselves. Seasons have bad episodes. Albums have bad songs. Books have bad chapters. To say that everything after S3 is just downhill is just not understanding per capita.

>The show consistently had good episodes and bad episodes through all 9 seasons
Lmao. There were maybe a handful of bad episodes in the first two seasons at most. Season 3 onward had a noticeable shift in quality where the average episode was just meh and the lows got really bad. Stuff like Sleepless in Ponyville, Pinkie Apple Pie, or Rarity Investigates became standouts from the shit, but were not the norm at all. And it got even worse when the OG staff left at the end of season 5. You have to be delusional to think there was just as much good at the end as there was toward the beginning.
>>
>>43635274
>The show consistently had good episodes and bad episodes through all 9 seasons.
This feels like something vague that somebody would say on purpose in hopes of nobody correcting them.
>>
>>43634765
I genuinely cried in anguish and dropped the show after. I was 13 years old.
I'm still fucking livid all these years later. It also looked like Twilight had absolutely no choice in the matter and the massive responsibility of now being an immortal being who would eventually ascend the throne was put upon her without her consent.
This episode is horrendous and I fucking hate it for ruining my favourite character. I headcanoned that Twilight graduates Celestia's friendship crap and later ends up just simply becoming her top teacher at the School for Gifted Unicorns. Twilight becoming and Alicorn was the single worst thing to ever happen to this series. I will never forgive the writers for this.
>>
>>43634765
Yes
>>
>>43634765
Aside from a bunch of complaning and arguing, it didn't. What hurt the fandom was the passage of time with people growing older. Even as someone who generally agrees that S6+ onwards are not as good as what came before, I don't think the drop-off of interest in that time period is up to a specific quality drop. It's simply that MLP became a fad in late 2010 and stopped being a fad in late 2015 when the internet changed, more normies and children unfamiliar with prior internet culture (of which bronies were a huge part of) flooded in, and MLP largely lost its cultural relevance.
>>
>>43637701
If anything, this is a more nuanced and less vague take then
>THE SECOND TWILIGHT GOT HER WINGS EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE SHOW INSTANTLY BECAME SHIT. EVERY BACKGROUND, EVERY VECTOR, EVERY WALK CYCLE, EVERYTHING THAT WAS FINE BEFORE MAGICALLY BECAME SHITTY AND TERRIBLE IN A SINGLE INSTANT BECAUSE IT WAS A PART OF THE SHITTY TWILICORN ERA AND EVERY SINGLE EPISODE FROM THAT POINT ONWARDS WAS TERRIBLE TOO. GAMES PONIES PLAY? INSTANT CLASSIC. CASTLE-MANE-IA? FUCKING GARBAGE.

MLP's peak popularity was Season 4 and the first half of Season 5. It started declining second half of Season 5 and took a huge nosedive after the season. What "objectively" killed the show according to popularity metrics was not Twilicorn, if it was then the Season 4/5 popularity would not have been so high after large hiatuses that were post-Twilicorn. And from memory those two seasons were the height of the fandom's reviews/analysis scene even if the creative scene was admittedly lower. You can make the argument that Twilicorn/EQG stopped the fandom growth (I am not personally convinced on this arguement due to how growth naturally levels off with the show being fully exposed in online culture at that point, but it is certainly possible), but it absolutely did not cause an outright decline.

Honestly, I found it really cool when I saw this google trends since it matches so well with my opinions of the show, since I thought the show was great for Seasons 1-4, declined a little in 5 but stayed good, then declined a lot afterwards. Apparently dropping the show after Season 5 was not uncommon. Anyways, here is why Season 4 was the best season:

Season 4:
>Featured by far the most amount of songs of any season of the show, and the songs are consistently great and varied.

>Took risks and was very creative with really fun and varied concepts for episodes.

>Very solid mix of episodes for each of the mane six, plus Spike & the CMC. Every character got great development in at least one episode. All of the characters got great episodes to shine in without exception. (especially impressive is that this season managed to have both two great Spike episodes (Inspiration Manifestation, Equestria Games), and two great CMC episodes (Flight to the Finish, Twilight Time), even though both of those episode types tended to be meh in seasons 1-3.

>Has a more action packed and mature tone, while at the same time not sacrificing any of the characterization and fun that makes the show great (unlike the later seasons).

>The episode quality and consistency is easily the best of any season. Outside of a couple bad episodes and like 3 meh ones, basically everything else was flat out great.

>Twilight was just as nerdy and likeable as before, and her treehouse was still there. She also got great development in the premiere and finale that undid the issues with the rushed Season 3 finale. (Both episodes clearly established how Twilight was not actually very happy with her role as princess, and it took the whole season for her to find her place.) None of the issues with Twilight's character were actually noticeable until Season 5.
(1/2)
>>
>>43638650
>It also fixed the rushed Discord reformation by making it clear in his appearances how he was not fully reformed, was really only even liked by Fluttershy, and still loved annoying others with chaos. These issues built up well to his relapse in the finale, with him realizing that the fun of being evil wasn't worth losing his friendship with Fluttershy. Such great development.

>That season premiere and finale were two of the most fun two-parters of the show. The arc with the keys was a great way to tie the season together in a non-intrusive way that even highlighted great character development.

>Animation quality is probably the best of the entire show, being higher quality compared to the previous seasons while also not trying too hard or seeming stilted like later seasons.

Basically, Season 4 took the great qualities of Seasons 1-3, and pumped up the music, animation, and action, took more risks in general, balanced the characters and developed them fantastically, fixed the issues caused by Season 3, while not sacrificing anything that made the show great previously. It is easily my favorite season for these reasons. Even Season 5 (which I still think was pretty good) began dropping the ball in comparison, and seasons 6-9 basically felt like a whole different (and worse) show.

>>
>>43638650
>chartfag still has this copypasta saved and ready to go
Again, one can see consistent healthy fandom growth up until hitting a ceiling and stagnating once season 4 hit. Only season 5 caused a very brief spike again before gradually falling into an unrecoverable decline. You can cope as much as you want, but if season 4 were as great as you want to gaslight everyone into believing, it would've continued going up.
>>
>>43638650
>>43638740
S4 has high highs and low lows. S5 is just even across the board with only a couple of episodes that are kinda bad but not even terrible.
>>

>growth naturally levels off with the show being fully exposed in online culture at that point
Newer fans joining around that time (and today really) have much less of a chronological foundation to go off of. They were coming in often already exposed to Twilicorn/EqG/fan content and expecting those things to happen. Meanwhile, older fans experiencing as it went were dropping the show en masse out of apathy or disgust, roughly causing the two groups to even out during seasons 4-5. You can find no shortage of testimony out there of people sharing why they lost interest and it's always the same things. Either the immediate changes post-Faust, or the gradual rot over time.

Are we also missing the part where the hiatus between S4 and S5 was almost a whole year? Every "ex-brony" I know associates their departure with the fandom with a few key things. None of which have anything to do with turbo autism
1.) They simply "grew out of it". Some people just don't hold interest in things for almost 2 decades.
2.) Social pressure. Family members, friends, online trolls, etc. pushed them away from associating with the fandom.
3.) The almost year long hiatus between S4 and S5. In that time they just found other things that captured their interest.
4.) Bad experiences. Some people I've known have had such a horrible experience with other people in the fandom that they were pushed out of it.
Out of the several hundred people I've interacted with since 2011 I have never heard anyone say they stopped watching or left the fandom attribute that to S4+. The only people that complain about that are the newfags that "want to fit in" and turbo autists that (sometimes) laughably think they can do a better job.

>>43634765
A decent amount, but the people who really cared were already hardcore fans. It was one of the big reasons I fell off of the show, felt very alienated by it and then the changing quality and "atmosphere" of the show and Equestria in it made me kind of just slowly drift away. I was trying to relive the S1/S2 glory days with it but simply wasn't getting that.

A lot of people who were OG bronies back in 2012 that I ran into backed away from the show due to writing quality changes in S3 more than just Twilicorn. The general phrasing I see is "It stopped being amazing and just became another good cartoon" more or less, and that kind of made them feel like it wasn't really worth sticking around. Twilicorn still alienated a shitload of people though, especially when they started doing more and more of a focus on her in the coming seasons. I feel like it was less damaging than the people who claim it destroyed everything say, but also more damaging than the people who claim it didn't do that much say.

Twilight's wings were 100% a thing of speculation and for autists like me an issue with continuity in eegards to a princess sometimes getting shoved out of a cab while at other times getting regaled by every single pony in the area. That constant rubber-banding of continuity just got worse as seasons went on and they tried to 'explain' more things in the show. One of the greatest assets to the popularity with autists beyond the color and cartoon stuff was that the world had a bunch of small bits about how it worked without needing to overexplain like they did in that mane episode in s7 or 8. On the other side of the coin I could spend hours talking with multiple people and all of us come up with a different solution to how magic plays with the fabrics of realities with the mirror pool spell in Too Many Pinkie Pies. They laid the groundwork for fans to talk about the spell, left it open to interperation for people to get as autistic as they like, and that was the fun of it.
Past that, as a guy who joined up in early 2011 in my early college years because Suited for Success was just that good of an episode, the real death knell for me was Glimmer's redemption. The idea of a manipulative sociopath who's constantly showing she just doesn't give a damn about what sort of inflicted pain she brings on others as long as it futhers her goals reqlly rubbed me the wrong way. Her excuse was flimsy at best and she spent 80% of the time in S6 and S7 being a complete faggot to everyone who welcomed her. Sometimes there really are people you just can't be friends with because thier inner core is so hardcoded they won't ever change, and I think trying to teach the lesson of 'fixing a sociopath with friendship' is a fucking terrible idea for anyone outside of professional psychs.

Maybe this is a hot take, but for me it wasn't the wings themselves, I thought it was a bit sad to see happen, because even nimwits pretty quickly realized this now means twilight will outllive every friend she ever makes as the paradoxical princess of friendship, she was destined to always watch her friends grow old and leave.

No, what really actually got my hooves all bunched up was the GIANT LITERAL MIDDLE FINGER from Hasjew AFTER THEY BLEW UP TWILIGHTS HOME

I don't think any of the wings/castle stuff was bad in itself. I just wish the effects of it had been applied more consistently through the rest of the show. I rarely ever hear anyone bring up the season 4 premier. It's got some okay gags, but it's basically just McCarthy stealing Larson's original MMC ideas and coming up with meandering shit to stretch it out to two parts. Not to mention the plot device cum potion feels like a really lazy way to facilitate the flashbacks. Breezies is also a pretty bold choice, but the rest I can agree with.

I caught up on the rest of the season 4 since making the first post, so I can finally respond to your list. Overall, I agree on For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils and Inspiration Manifestation; those are actually stellar, A+, one of the best in the show and clearly the best episodes in the season (I'm not a Rarityfag, but her episodes happen to often be very good, Rarity Takes Manehattan not included).

I'd say that Pinkie Apple Pie is good, probably the best episode of the first half of the S4. On the other hand, Pinkie Pride left me entirely unimpressed. Weird Al is cool, but the goof-off sequence wasn't to my liking and I found the resolution too convenient for its own good.

The second part of the season is better, Inspiration Manifestation and For Whom Sweetie Belle Toils aside, Maud Pie is way above decent, Testing Testing 1, 2, 3 and Trade Ya! are pretty fun, and I even enjoyed Equestria Games and Somepony to Watch Over Me to some extent. I also don't get your dislike for Twilight's Kingdom. I thought it was much more engaging that Princess Twilight Sparkle. Honestly, the opening's only redeeming quality was the fact that it reined in the Discord reformation storyline a bit (conversely, pushing the reformation too far was Princess Twilight Sparkle's biggest issue; they really had no idea how to approach Discord's character after the Keep Calm and Flutter On's fiasco).

Besides For Whom The Sweetie Belle Toils, Inspiration Manifestation, Maud Pie, Pinkie Apple Pie, Testing Testing 1, 2, 3, Trade Ya! and Twilight Kingdom, the rest of the episodes in the season range from middling to just okay, as I said before. The "key" ones are especially disappointing. None of them feel as impactful as they should. Although not perfect, I'd say S4 is still way above S3 as a whole.

You're right in that the effects of Twilight becoming an alicorn are vastly overstated. That said, it was followed by a decline of her character into the neurotic mess she was by the end of the show. Twilight from season 1-2 is vastly different to Twilight from season 8-9 and not in a good way that implies character development.

Minecraft is still in active development, why would that be comparable to G4 which has been dead for 7 years?
>>
>>43656707
Yeah.
>>

>Minecraft was popular in 2010 and it's still popular in 2026, why couldn't MLP do the same given they share the same lifespan?
minecrap is still getting update and has brown bricks while g4 is dead

>Minecraft isn't an overly "girly" game and appeals to all demographics
modern Minecraft is effeminated to hell
I hate Agnes so much it's fucking unreal

I am glad I don't even know who Agnes is. I stopped playing sometime shortly after villagers were added.

That's Beta 1.9/Release 1.0, you've missed most of the Silver Age of the game (Beta 1.8~Release 1.5/6/7/8) yes, people do argue that the end point is somewhere in these four major updates
tl;dr is that M$ put a woman that PRETENDS to be an Minecraft oldfag in charge of the whole game

I only remember most of 1.7.2 minecraft and nothing else.
>>
>>43659337
Yeah I started with Alpha, played through the RCs before the late 2011 release, then faded out from there. I guess it had to be slightly later than when villagers were added. I can't remember which update. I think it was when they added the buildings to jungles, maybe that was the closest. I do remember playing with the desert structures. so probably later than I thought. I forgot villagers were added that early.

1.7 was pretty nice, even if I prefer 1.5/1.6. Fuck new biomes and fuck ruined cavegen
>>43660976
>I forgot villagers were added that early.
basically
>Beta 1.8
>added villages
>nothing related to them, just ghost towns
>Beta 1.9 pre-releases / "RC" / 1.0.0
>added villagers, literally have pig AI
>Release 1.2
>added actual AI to villagers + iron farming
>Release 1.3
>added Jungle temples
>added desert temples/pyramids
>added trading to villagers
>Release 1.14
>made trading so OP it broke the fucking game because fuck you balance is too notch for Microslop's Minecraft

It was mostly confusion at first. By season 4 it turned to hatred though. I think the wings could actually have worked if they just handled it better.
