I watched the late seasons for the first time in the anni and I liked her lots.
What I like best about Starlight is that she caused my wife to show up again.
>>43655889I love my wife!
She's kinda cute, I'd hang out with her.

>>43655889She didn't save the show but she made the sinking ship more manageable.
>>43655889Reddit loves her though
Literally the opposite, she's a Rick and Morty irony poisoned out of place false mare that doesn't even talk like a pony. /mlp/ is the only place that didn't slurp this garbage up. Kill all glimmerniggers
>>43656158But enough about Shimmer.

>8 post by the same anon in a rowwew>>43656146>She didn't save the show but she made the sinking ship more manageable.This.Glimmer was written inside of the limitations of the time (don't know how to write the M6, ponies act more like cartoon teens than horsies, gradual descent into beamclashes and quips) and navigates them better than most of the M6 because she is a creature of the age.
>>43656179I couldn't quite figure out why Sunset never appealed to me until now but that pretty much explains it. She's more woman than pony.

>>43655889She's literally just a strawman of an already shit ideology.>>43656136Anon, the CIA hates commies.
>>43655889People like Starlight are incapable of genuine empathy or love. Take her numerous examples of psycho behavior where she has no qualms about harming or manipulating others for her own ends and only stops when she faces consequences for it. The show never attempts to justify her inclusion before we repeatedly see her doing this shit, and it's a wonder how anyone finds her even remotely likeable. She didn't save the show or make it bearable. She was the shit icing on top of a pile of manure.
>>43656830Maybe in the 60s, they did
>>43656390>because she is a creatureFinally one of you glimmerfags admits it. She is the spiritual precursor to creaturequestria
>>43655889Who's that?
>>43656982>She is the spiritual precursor to creaturequestriaOnly in the sense that Starlight is emblematic of S6-7.S8-9 are different again in spirit. You can't even really say that Starlight is/represents the killing of the early show because it's more likeearly seasons (~S1-2) -> directionless stuff (~S3-4) -> twilicorn (S4-5) -> glimmer (~S6-7) -> creaturequestria (~S7-9)but even that doesn't have enough nuance because like, the castle and the cutie map unify S5 and S6 in character a lot even though the actual content is fairly different, and everything varies a lot episode to episode so broad groupings aren't that helpful.Rock Solid Friendship is a playing with OC's episode, A Royal Problem is a Glimmer episode to it's core (think about how many reaction images it spawned, too), but the finale is part and parcel of the last two seasons in pretty much every way (compare it to BotE in particular).Funnily enough talking about Glimmer being/not being a pony, S5E1-2 has a lot of cute pony moments and S5E25-26 is extremely representative of the S6-7 art direction.
>>43655889Glim Glam is one of my favorite ponies and made the late seasons more watchable. She's a cute early season mare trapped in the late seasons, she'd have fit right in the comfy low stakes type of episodes.
>>43655968If you think poochie was worse than twilicorn and that hotpink slut, your opinion about anything is worthless.
>>43657304The hot pink slut makes my dick hard, so she's forgiven.
>>43655889I find her a lot more endearing than Twilight. I love how friendship was always important to Starlight and that she had social anxieties that made it hard for her, so her learning friendship had much more meaning and made me root for her the whole way. It was really cool how she made her own circle of friends too, and it happened naturally instead of being fated by destiny which was nice.
Shimmy was better written but Glimmy was more entertaining
Starlight sucks almost entirely because of her redemption. Either you love her as a villain or you love her post redemption, either way the redemption itself ruins her.
never seen barbie so i dunno about the yellow thing but starlight is so cute
>>43657495I disagree, I love every part of her. Starlight's redemption is the best written in my opinion but I can understand why you'd prefer sunset's.
>>43657503it's kino and comfy, give it a fair shot Sunset's a great character and has one of the strongest arcs in G4 if not the strongest (she's pretty much the only "redeemed villain" that gets meaningful development and closure) not to mention she's sexy as fuck at the very least it's worth it for the songs, Ingram still cooks (John Boyd's songs are okay too, Mad Twience is the standout among his contributions)also Forgotten Friendship introduces a character who's very clearly inspired by Anon and considering we see a 4chan window on a character's laptop in one of the movies, that's fucking hilariousultimately i still don't really think EqG needed to be a thing in the first place, but i like what it ultimately became and enjoyed it way more once FiM started to go downhill and it started to gain an edge. they clearly had fun with it and got to do a little more with it than they could with FiM because Hasbro stopped giving a shit about EqG after a while
>>43657522>"redeemed villain" that gets meaningful development and closureStarlight has that too and more because she wasn't instantly fixed by a rainbow laser, I wasn't a fan of Sunset becoming a better friend than others so quickly. I love that Starlight had a full season of learning friendship to flesh out her redemption arc.
>>43657527I was a let down by Shimmer's redemption after giving it a chance since it was hyped up super hard. I prefer Glimmer's by a mile, being an entertaining friendship villain and having a natural reformation does a lot to make the redemption feel complete.
Shut up, faggot.
>>43657527>muh rainbow laseryou again. filtered.
>>43657545>mind controlling her friends and selling Trixie's wagon without her permission = redemption feels more complete i didn't know going backwards was going forwards. Shimmy actually learned from her mistakes and didn't repeat them. Glimmy keeps thinking she can literally just do things, consequences be damned.
>>43657593honestly, the rainbow laser really is more of an issue with the movie and its writing than specifically with Sunset's character. that's a pretty standard trope for the series too, it's like complaining about a musical number or a friendship speech.
Reddit loves her though
>>43655889Explain.
>>43657655no i don't think i will
>>43657601Stuff like musical numbers and letters to celestia have depth that expands the world and its characters. The laser is unfortunately a shortcut that's virtually no different to brainwashing. Passable for kid's show standards, it's a very easy method to change a character from point A to point B for damn sure. My standards of quality for a series I love is just a bit higher I suppose.
>>43657527Sunset was always a better friend she just didn't act on it because she thought it was pointless.
brat pony
>>43657595ELTSD is a part of Glimmy's redemption arc learning to overcome her anxieties that sets up the finale where she redeems herself along with some friends. That's actually a problem with Shimmy, she's too perfect and thus wasn't very interesting to watch. Discord was honestly more fun. I like when the m6 and friends are able to make mistakes and grow from them, makes them feel more authentic. Even the elements of harmony can make mistakes, the most virtuous ponies in Equestria, so anyone else can too. It's silly to bring up season 8 though, the writers went overboard with some of the conflicts there, we can paint most of the m6 in much worse lights like Pinkie.
>>43657746You forgot the P at the end of the first word
>>43657697>a shortcut that's virtually no different to brainwashingit's quite differently actually, i really don't think this comparison holds up like you think it does>Passable for kid's show standardshe says on the board for a kids' show. >My standards of quality for a series I love is just a bit higher I supposemaybe you should spend more time watching other things, even reading other things
>>43657793>ELTSD is a part of Glimmy's redemption arc learning to overcome her anxietiesweird way to "learn" it. there's no real consequence either besides just having to apologize. >that sets up the finale where she redeems herself along with some friends.no it fucking doesn't, what a retarded stretch>That's actually a problem with Shimmy, she's too perfectno she isn't, that's literally the whole point of her character>thus wasn't very interesting to watchshe was very interesting to watch, and by far the most interesting EqG character (which is a given when you're the main character and most of the focus is on you)>Discord was honestly more fun.fuck you, no he wasn't, he was annoying and lame and dragged the show down whenever he appeared>I like when the m6 and friends are able to make mistakes and grow from them, makes them feel more authentic. Even the elements of harmony can make mistakes, the most virtuous ponies in Equestria, so anyone else can too.um, okay? what does that have to do with your argument?>It's silly to bring up season 8 thoughmoving the goalposts. any canon material is fair game.>the writers went overboard with some of the conflicts therepersonally i think everything after season 2 was going overboard, but we still got a lot of kino out of it
>>43657835>no real consequenceIt's more than what Twilight faced and Glimmy even made amends for it, and it was a direct setup to the finale where she opens with not being confident in having changed as part of her self-loathing and guilt.>that's literally the whole point of her characterSadly that made Shimmy boring. The point of Glimmy's redemption was never to turn her into a perfect mare but to learn friendship to heal her broken heart and make her altruism more effective. I enjoy watching the m6 and friends because they are endearing and flawed.I'm happy for you that you like Shimmy. Personally I liked Sci-Twi more. Jerk characters like Discord, Dash, and Trixie are fun to me.It's okay to like different characters, friend, you're free to your opinions as am I.
>>43657304Both can be shit decisions, but the only people who like Poochie are Glimmerfags.
>>43655889>hating character I like is a Reddit opinion. There goes another word that has lost all meaning because now retards use it to describe "Thing I don't like".
>>43657898I'm a twifag and I like Glimmer.
>>43657527>Starlight has that too because she wasn't instantly fixed by a rainbow laserKEK, they literally treat Starlight as a redeemed character by the end of season 5. Sunset's redemption arc actually works because nobody bought that she became better the second the movie ended, she had to suffer the consequences of her actions and learn not to be a complete jerk to everyone around her, while Poochie constantly messes things up due to the slightest inconvenience and Haber will force a way to justify her shitty behaviour. The worst thing is the fact he's aware of this and just treats as "a cute quirk" and not something that makes her insufferable to anyone who's not a massive retard like glimmerniggers.>Starlight had a full season of learning friendship Except that she didn't. They never show her actually learning said lessons, they only imply at the idea she supposedly learn that stuff using time-skips.
>>43657898You don't speak for me, bitch. Glimmy is awesome.
>>43657522Holy shit I never made that connection with Wallflower
I might delete her dedicated folder one day, it was fun when she first debuted and every modern episode featured her, hasbro would force the character real hard people would label her poochie and seeing her face posted here would cause them immense seeth. Now things are different though I'm never in the mood to post her. It was less because i liked the character and more because they didn't

>>43655889Best redeemed villain from G4 in my opinion.
>>43657892Shimmy isn't boring, why do you keep saying this? It's like you expect her character to be something that it's not.
>>43658163Whether anything is boring or exciting is entirely subjective.
>>43658125If the writing weren't shit I would agree. As it stands that honor goes to Shimsham for me
>>43658166Okay, explain why you think she's boring. Share with me your subjective reasoning for that argument. Because I don't think if you watch EqG in good faith and actually properly understand what's going on that you can write Sunset off as "boring". Her position in the overall world is a unique one. Technically a pony but a full time inhabitant of the human world, she's always "in between worlds" and therefore has perspectives shaped by both worlds that other characters wouldn't have. That alone leaves so much up to the imagination, even if it isn't interrogated too deeply by what we see on screen.
>>43658175If you look at her as an isekai protagonist of sorts it really starts to make a lot of sense. She's a pony shaped by the human world, just as we are shaped by the pony world through our investment in the show and its universe. You could basically consider her an inverse audience analogue on that note. She's our anchor to Equestria and the straight man in this wacky Barbie world full of ridiculous characters. She doesn't lack personality so much as the personalities of everyone around her are so much more pronounced and cartoony that she bounces off of them like the adult in the room. It's a subtler kind of character in a world where everyone else has some kind of gimmick or some kind of hat, and hers is just being both the least ridiculous person in the room and the most ridiculously ambitious one at the same time.
>>43658168That's okay brother, Sunset's writing was shit so I like Glimglam's.
>>43658175>>43658186Hell. Just watch this. How the hell you can see this and think "this character is boring"? This is clearly not a boring person. https://youtu.be/LeLjsjmYjBA?is=_vuRYLMTGz0koi9K
>>43658188>says the guy whose favorite pony was written by Josh Haber
>>43658192To be fair, it may be a case where anons' brains turn off whenever they see nohooves.
>>43658196That and many didn't bother watching past the first two movies, Sunset's role in Rainbow Rocks is way more passive but she has plenty of great moments afterwards
>>43658195>Haber was a better writer than shimmer'sI'm fine with that.
>>43658199Then again that's the whole point of the movie. Sunset's deliberately avoiding the spotlight while trying to rehabilitate her image, and everything is only set right once all other avenues are exhausted and she's the one to take initiative. It's honestly a great story about the limits of deference, and not to be afraid to take initiative even if it "looks bad" - basically, Sunset learns there are more important things than optics. The average /mlp/ Anon just lacks emotional intelligence. Sunset and Twilight's heart to heart in the kitchen is one of the tightest character moments in G4 and it went over so many people's heads, myself included.
>>43658203I don't want to fight with a Glimmerfag, I love Shimmy and Glimmy both, can we just agree to disagree
>>43658211Sure, I don't want to fight with a shimmerfag either. Maybe next time keep the bashing to yourself instead of baiting, it's perfectly fine to prefer one character over another. Notice how in my first post I didn't mention my thoughts on Sunset's writing. I don't know why you felt the need to be so hostile, I'd like to be friends with shimmerfags but some of you make it hard.
>>43658175I already explained. She's too perfect and I liked Sci-Twi more. Apart from that her villainy left much to be desired and her personality isn't as fun as other characters. I've watched the movies, specials, and a few shorts. It's an okay show.I'm happy for you that you love her so much, but she's not going to appeal to everyone in the world.
>>43657301This
>>43658225I wasn't being hostile.
>>43658341>>43658225>Notice how in my first post I didn't mention my thoughts on Sunset's writingI never mentioned Glimmer's writing in particular either. I just said "the writing". I never singled her out. The writing didn't affect only her. It made it harder for me to appreciate several characters I loved.
>>43658305>She's too perfectThat's literally not the case. You claim to have watched it all yet you're totally misreading her character. She's supposed to be an everyman, why you're reading that as somebody meant to be "perfect" I have no idea, this archetype is all over media/stories and you wouldn't consider most other recognizable everyman characters "too perfect". Which just comes off as a kind of illiteracy to me on your part.>her personality isn't as fun as other charactersAnd why not? What's wrong with her personality? Explain what you mean by this.

>>43658355You said it yourself Shimmy doesn't make mistakes, that's boring to me. >>43658417Sunset literally fails in every major appearance of her character.
>>43658505>>43658527Failing for plot reasons is not the same as having character flaws. My point stands either way, friend.>>43658512She's more fun, I didn't even mention her writing. Damn dude, you're so insecure and combative over what others think about Shimmy. This is why everyone finds you all insufferable, always touting her in our face like she's the second coming of Jesus that we must worship. You're not going to make me like her just because you do.
>>43658951>She's more funBecause...? You keep going to the same logical loops.>Sci-Twi is better than Unicorn Twi>Why?>Because she's nerdier>And why does that make her better?>Because... It just does, ok?
>>43658951>Failing for plot reasonsThis is insane cope and backpedaling all at once; the plot is what informs us of character you complete imbecile.Sunset is factually an overconfident hothead, her go-to plan for Gloriosa, Juniper, the Dazzlings, and Post Crush were all to immediately confront them which horribly backfired on her by accelerating their plans in 3/4 cases. This is why I cannot stand Glimmerniggers.

>>43659135That one is ambiguous because she was recording it and obviously she had to have set up the recording beforehand. I wouldn't put it past shimsham to merc a bitch on camera but the reason Trixie thought she was about to witness a murder is because she didn't know Shimmer was recording the interaction and could therefore be playing it up for the camera.Something I appreciate about shimmy is that she's the only major villain after Chrysalis who actually puts hooves on the protagonists when she's fighting them. Discord still does it when he's 'reformed' funnily enough but he exists in an ambiguous state of menace. Combined with her still being as angry when she's reformed as she was when she was before the first movie and she feels much more like the protagonist of a boys series a lot of the time.Contrasting Shimmer and Princess Twilight is interesting because most of them would solve most of the problems the other one faces in two seconds flat.
>>43655889Trve
>>43659050>only towards villains to advance the plotYou're missing the point. I'll say it once more: I enjoy watching the m6 and friends because they are endearing and flawed. Their flaws sometimes lead to interpersonal friendship problems with each other in a show about friendship, watching them make mistakes and coming out as better friends is fun and relatable in a slice of life.
>>43656859The CIA still hates the actual commies. Most western "communists" are either useless faggots or schizo retards. Communism is shit.
>>43659950>Their flaws sometimes lead to interpersonal friendship problems with each other in a show about friendshipAnd this doesn't happen with Sunset? The entire basis of Backstage Pass is her being selfish and blind to what Pinkie wants to do at the festival. It isn't some asspull that saves the day in that story, it's Sunset and Pinkie working together (plus the security chad or else Sunset would job to a locked door again like in Forgotten Friendship)

>>43660408Yea, SoS and frenemies are the only ones as good but they're about kirins and the legion of doom.
>>43660408A trivial pursuit is on par with road to friendship because they both suck.
starlight glimmer was Haber's OC and thats why she workedat that point in the show basically all the mane characters had nowhere else to develop. the show should've ended when twilight became a princess BE REAL. but hasbro wanted to keep exploiting FiM's good name for money so its corpse shambled on as they hired a bunch of new writers.one was haber, who clearly recognised there wasnt much new you could do with these characters without treading old ground. so, new character, one that spends her time around other less developed characters so they can all go somewhere new.haber, for all his faults as a writer, actually gave a shit about this (his) character and how they developed. that focus and that care meant they had actual well realised progression over their episodes exploring things that couldn't be explored with other characters. by far the only part of later season that made me feel anything was it perfect? on par with seasonwun? absolutely not. but compare this to the majority of episodes that came out later season, written by single episode contract writers who had no connection whatsoever to any of the characters. when thats the competition no wonder "consistently written character by a writer who cared" seems like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.if the writer felt something writing it, that shows. if the writer felt nothing, that shows too.
>>43660408>Haber doesn't bother putting effort into M6 episodes>He puts effort into the effort of his oc so you'll like her more>this makes her a good characterGlimmerniggers always fail to see that what makes Glimmer suck is the fact that she was favoured over the other characters because Haber was desperate to leave his mark on a good work of media that never needed him or his oc
