Well, Crowbar is basically THE pinnacle of Sludge Metal, so it’s kinda hard to find anything better. The buck stops with Crowbar, basically. No other sludge band can really compete.

Black Flag - My War is Black Sabbath worship.Melvins is My War worship.Sludge Metal is Melvins worship.The best and truest kind of Sludge to me is the nastier more hardcore and even grind-adjacent type. Stuff like Eyehategod and Dystopia, already recommended in this thread. Unfortunately that kind of Sludge is in short supply compared to stuff like Atmosludge. Fistula, Toadliquor are good in that vein but a bit more on the Doom Metal side than the Hardcore Punk side of the spectrum.Chat Pile is a more modern band which you probably already know, bleak Godflesh-y industrial Sludge with a heavy Big Black influence. Meth and Portrayal of Guilt are good too if you want some Dissodeath and/or Black Metal influences with your Chat Pile brand of Sludge/Noise Rock.
