today at my lesson we learned about altered dominants. blue bossa for reference, its the G7+5#9
take the dominant chord, go a half-step up, and play the melodic minor of that (Ab in this case)
in relation to the 5 (G), the scale looks like this
>tonic - b9 - #9 - 3 - b5 - #5 - b7
this has twice as many color options as a normal dominant and is really useful for resolving to the 1 in different ways

the attack is actually the most important quality for differentiating one instrument from another. they did a study where they swapped the attack frequencies and the transient frequencies of a guitar, piano, and other instruments and the focus group consistently associated the attack with the instrument rather than the transients

>>130371069
since strats have a unique attack this is why you can easily tell when you hear a strat

Then that should be really easy to measure. Oh wait, tonewood advocates have never measured it before? Hmmm...
>>
>>130371081
it has nothing to do with the wood and everything to do with the scale length and the fact that the strings are attached to giant springs in the back of the gutiar

does that mean if i make my riff too long (4 bars) i should reduce the tempo by half to get it to the golden length?
>>
>>130371088
If "attack" is the time it takes to reach peak volume, that would be extremely easy to measure. Why are all the morons in /gg/ silent when asked to demonstrate that a bolt on neck has more snap than a thru neck? I went to a Yamaha piano dealer and they had no problem showing me the decay and sustain on a spectrogram.
>>
>>130371149
How is it possible to be playing as long as him and still fucking suck so hard?
>>
>>130371186
you are right i agree with you. i guess i am not one of those morons. but it's not as easy as you think. you can measure the envelope of the total sound, but even a single note has harmonic frequencies and shit. you need a spectrogram for that and not everyone has that. my teacher actually busted one out on his computer to explain harmonic frequencies and how they contribute to consonant and dissonant intervals

>>130371172
>>130371218
NVM I'm a retard reducing tempo wouldn't do anything to the amount of bars in a song
>>
>>130371208
Sure, but attack definitionally is just reaching peak volume. So it isn't as complicated as harmonics and all of that. Just peak decibal and the time it takes to reach that. A spectograph can easily demonstrate that.
>>
>>130371231
that's oversimplifying it. it's not the time to reach peak volume. it's which frequencies are included in the attack and how strong they are
>>
Anyone got any experience with these Framus wh1? Not the German fancy one but the Chinese made. They're the only Vs below 1k that come with og Floyd and they look nice as hell to boot. That and the Epi V 70s is what I'm considering at the moment and I'm leaning towards this one cause I already got a hardtail King V right now.
>>
>>130371231
No anon, you don't understand. It's not just envelope, it's the TONE. The maple produces more treble. None of us know how to use equalizers, so we can just use that as an excuse to buy a ton of different guitars.
>>
>>130371245
>frequencies
Hmmmm, it sounds like you need to learn how to use a 10 band EQ.
>>
>>130371270
EQ applies to your entire sound. you can't add frequencies specifically to the attack or the transients. an EQ can't make your guitar sound like a piano or a trumpet

A spectrogram can easily see the difference in frequencies between acoustic guitars. It's so obvious that you could look at two analysis and tell which guitar is which. This can't be done with electric. You could have different guitars made of the same material, one with a thru neck, one with a bolt on, and the spectrogram can't see the difference. If it can't see it, you can't see it. There's tons of empirical data on this, and PRS would be the first to show some if it proved him right. But it doesn't.

Okay then, WHICH frequencies are we talking about? And how strong are they? Which frequencies would need to be present as peak volume is reached? And if your claim is that it's the freqs present during attack, and that you can't EQ that, then you're claiming that the freq's audible during the attack are different than the ones during decay? You understand that the time it takes to reach peak decibals is the tiniest fucking fraction of a second, and that you can't measure that time without scientific equipment, right? And the claim is that in that 1/100th of a second, that you can hear the different harmonic frequencies in that short time period? Through a dual rec?

Definitely songsterr. And you can use guitarscale. org to see every scale known to man.
For progress, it sounds boring, but just put in the time. At least an hour a day.
Most importantly, stay far the fuck away from /gg/. This place is for shitflinging and posting Rick Beato, not for discussing music.

>>130371740
I got the Songsterr app so far.
>>130371755
I will try putting in more time in the future... I've been struggling to play with a metronome and it gives me weird headaches.
>>
>>130371781
every guitar should have slots that you put effects into like materia from final fantasy
>>
>>130371800
forget the metronome play with a drum track, its more about the feel than lining exactly up to the grid, take any popular rock song and snap it to the grid and you'll see what I mean
>>
>>130371800
I've only been playing for 8 months or so. I've played bass for 25 years but switched over to 6 string because of some hand injuries. I've been putting in about an hour on week days, 3 hours on sundays, and 5 hours on saturdays. The progress has been really encouraging. What genres do you play?
>>
>>130371819
I've only had a guitar back in my life for about 2 months now, so I haven't settled on any genre... I started 14 years ago but a hand injury made me give up. I missed it, and I have such a fondness for the electric guitar in general.

I just like playing jazzy strings of notes with the neck pickup, and the growl of the bridge. I guess I'm interested in learning some Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, and maybe even KISS tracks. That's what I was thinking about tonight, anyway.
>>130371806
The metronome made me drop out of playing so many times. I'll look something up that's a drum track on YouTube, methinks.

I'll head off to guitar practice land in another 10 minutes or 15.
>>
>>130371855
if you have a looper pedal i usually just do some percussive stuff hitting my muted strings for rhythm when i practice
>>
>>130371855
I agree with that anon, I have a metronome but don't really use it unless I'm practicing arpeggios. Just do a drum track or play over your favorite songs. Maiden is one of my favorite bands as well, and they're great for beginner guitarists. The rhythm parts are extremely easy and a lot of their solos are beginner friendly. I always find Dave Murray's solos to be a little easier and more fun, so give them a shot. The solos for 2 minutes, strange world, and flight of icarus are pretty good starting points. Good luck anon.
>>
>>130371879

Them: The Charlie Christian Stratelecaster can't hurt you, it's not real
The Charlie Christian Stratelecaster:
>>
>>130370758
>Get dominant
>Transpose half a step
>Inverse -that- for a usable altered dominant in a melodic minor mode
This seems extremely complicated, is this why people hate jazz-slop players?
>>
>>130372472
Both will be killer. Both are kind of the iconic year for either instrument. As much as I love early Teles and even being a little more of a Tele guy than a Strat guy it’d be hard to not pick the Strat, early-mid 60s Strats are some of my absolute favorite guitars.
What series are they? Older AVRI, AV I from a decade ago, current AV II? This would be a really big deciding factor for me. The original American Vintage line from like 2013 to like 2017 are some of the absolute best general production guitars Fender has ever made, and if any are from this AV I series that’d be the one I’d pick. Older AVRIs are also great and I’d be stoked with one of those too. Current AV IIs are great too but I wouldn’t place them in the same camp as their predecessor AV Is or AVRIs.
>>
>>130372441
My first instinct is to call this utter horseshit but the more I think about the energy waves disbursing through the instrument and the difference between the 4 bolts and an entire neck tenon, the more I realize I may not know...
>>
>>130372472
Ice blue strat
>>
>>130372501
I'm not going to buy it online. They're both from local sellers. Will play test first.
>>130372713
The Strat is from '07 and the tele is an '08, per their sellers. Any knowledge on these years?
>>
>>130372694
i mean yes it is complicated, but only when you're first learning it. that's why i love learning jazz, theres a tight feedback loop of
>what the fuck
>oh, this kinda makes sense
>holy shit i can do this now

Those would be American Vintage Reissue/AVRI series, late 90s to early 2010s. Serials should start with a V. That was a great series with some great guitars and either one will be killer assuming it hasn’t been fiddled with too badly. I’d get whatever one you like better, you can’t make a wrong decision with either of them

my understanding is hollowbodies are a pain in the ass due to the electronics in most venues a small jazz band would gig at and a semihollow avoids that problem
