> Old fags, Did any act have a platinum or even gold album during MTV's videos hey day (1983-1995) that didn't make videos?
[And you can't cite acts that got famous pre-MTV or later quit making videos after initially getting famous via videos (i.e., Pearl Jam]

I honestly can't think of one. Zoomers don't realize how powerful MTV was in making music stars.

Metallica didn't have a music video until ...And Justice for All.

Kenny G. Started making vids because he was famous, not the other way round.
Bad Religion, same.
George Winston.
Enya did become famous with Clannad, and she did make music videos - but both are so insignificant I think she fits the bill.
There's Wynton Marsalis in Jazz. But he's son of -, that muddles it.
Most rap and hip hop artists did make vids. But they got broadcasted at 11 AM on Sundays when people went to church (here in Europe). The real breakthrough for hip hop/rap was Dre 2001/Eminem/Wu Tang Clan around 2000.
Metal was at 11 PM once a week. If you wanted to hear new songs you had to video tape that stuff. I'd say Iron Maiden got their fans fair and square. It was 100% a gated community until Nirvana/Use your Illusion/Black Album/Thunderstruck/RATM happened. Ozzy Osbourne was nowhere to be seen. Went to one of his concerts in the early 90s when I was 14-15. I was the only person in the venue under the age of 40.
I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of country artists, but it's a genre I know nothing about.

they only got big (beyond metal cult fan base) when they made a video for 'One" tho.

No they got big with the black album. They got bigger with One because that's what our older cousins and brothers were listening to.

Leonard Cohen became famous in the late 60s-early 70s. Then he pretty much disappeared. His mid to late 80s albums made him more famous than ever before. His audience were people who hated MTV/American "culture".

a great example of this is White Zombie. They were featured on Beavis and Butthead and took off internationally. Turns out they were just a local club band the whole time and not built for that.
